Can't open FCP 4.0

I have had this program for about 5 years or so. In that time I have moved and gotten a new computer. I restored everything to the new computer via the back-up system and my external storage. When I tried to open FCP it is now asking for the serial number. Unfortunately I cannot find the booklet or the original disk. What can I do?

  • Can't open FCP 10.0.3 files on laptop with Mavericks 10.9.2

Hi, has anyone come across the following problem? I have been working on an event in a film class using 10.0.3. That computer runs on Lion Os I think. I have copied those files onto my Macbook Air, which I recently updated to Mavericks 10.9.2. I then tried to open copied files on that laptop using FCP 10.0.3 and I am told "file cannot be opened". Why? Is this because of my OS? If I were to upgrade to a more recent version of FCP will that solve the problem? Although I then can't continue to work on those files in class for obvious reasons.

You don't open projects in FCP X.
    Depending on your versions:
-for 10.0.x, the projects and events need to be in the appropriate folders, and FCP X will see them.
-for 10.1.x, things are very different; you use Libraries, which can be opened and closed, copied or moved as needed. Libraries contain events, and projects, as well as clips, always exist inside events.
There are very good reasons to update to 10.1.1, especially two: it is WAY better, and old versions do not work well in Mavericks.
BUT you need to understand the new library model - and, from your post, I gather, even the old model too.
Before you do anything, you may be well served to follow some online tutorials.
About upgrading, the free videos from Ripple Training are excellent: http://www.rippletraining.com/fcpx-features.html
About FCP X in general, a great tutorial (using 10.1) is from Izzy Video: http://www.izzyvideo.com/final-cut-pro-x-tutorial/

  • Can't open fcp project file - fcp not responding

starts to open project but gets to 23% and freezes fcp...project is being stored on a lacie 250gig protable hd with firewire. never had this issue after tons of work. tried going to a autosave version but tried several and they freeze up fcp
any ideas short of moving all the media to another drive and starting a new project (I was just about to start cutting this project today).

    Welcome to the forum!
Post the version of FCP you're running.
Try opening a new project file, then importing the captured clips into it... might fix this... If you trash your preferences for FCP found in the user/library/preferences/FCP User data folder, you can just click on the application and it won't try to open the last project file.
Can you open earlier project files OK?

  • Can't open FCP 10.1.2 bundle in FCP 10.0.9

Hi, I made a movie in FCP 10.1.2 Trial, and now I want to open it in FCP 10.0.9. When I try to import, It is greyed out and my version of fcp does not recognize it. I can't even open the bundle on a mac to look at the files. I can open them on a PC though and bring them over individually.
If I try  to open it by clicking on the icon on the desktop and selecting FCPx 10.0.9 it says it can't open files in the packaged format.
How can I get my project open? Thanks,
    Anna

Tom, any idea why the increase in posts from folks using older versions of the app who won't, or cannot, update? Seems, erm, suspicious.

  • Can't open FCP 6 project file on FCP 5

FCP says: "can't open a never version file",
so - *is there any possibility in FCP 6 make SAVE AS older version?*
in FCP 5 i can't see any possibility to do that.
maybe there is another way to solve my problem?
    thanks!

    Hi,
    welcome to the forum,
    FCP is not backwards compatible.
A solution is to export your project as XML in FCP6 and and import that in FCP5.
Check out the link below or read the clear instructions in the manual:

  • I can't open FCP

Its the same problem seen in this thread:  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3174921?start=0
I hadn't opened FCP in a while, it asked about resetting scratch discs, It gave me the page about verifying selection, I clicked on "Set" on the top line. That's when the whole programme stopped opening. Now it will start the loading process, ask about an external device that it can't find (but it always asks this and I always just click continue), then it will quit the programme. I don't have access to options like help or users etc.... so don't know what to do...
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Nat

  • Can FCE Open FCP files?

My friend and I will soon be collaborating on a project. I have Final Cut Express 3.0 and he will be getting Final Cut Studio. I know he'll be able to open my files, but will I be able to open his?

Not directly. FCE3 is based on a version of FCP that's earlier than the current version of FCP. Final Cut projects are not backwards compatible. You might be able to use XML to get around this. Exporting it from FCP, brining the XML file into FCE and then after you're done opening the FCE file in FCP. This does work in theory, but I don't think it's a good plan for a workflow. There is too much that can go wrong in the process of exporting and constantly upgrading projects, especially when you throw in the mix of things you can do in FCP that will be lost because they can't be translated into an FCE project.

  • Can't Open FCP after I Updated to 10.5.8 & downloaded AVID codecs

I recently updated my OS to 10.5.8. I also downloaded AVID codec for quicktime. Then, when I went to open FCP on my MacBook Pro (2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo), I was hit with the error message Final Cut Pro requires that your system have a CPU type G5; this system has a CPU type of G4. I've never had a problem running FCP on this laptop. Any suggestions? Help!

What version of FCP do you have?
Your MacBook Pro is an Intel processor Mac. FCP versions 5.1 through 7 should run on it. Older versions (5.0.4 and earlier) will not. They require a PPC processor Mac like the older G5s and G4s.

  • Can't open FCP file (version 5.1.1)

I have a FCP file file that will not open. The movie file included 1) imported pictures 2) movie footage, 3) several sound tracks (two from Cds and about 5 sound track files from SoundTrak Pro for effects); the movie file has a duration of about 5 minutes. I’ve tried the following (in this order):
    1. Checked the autosave vault. While I can recover the file, I’ve lost 14 hours of editing so I would like to find a better solution.
    2. Moved the Soundtrack files so they are no longer referenceable (moved these to another folder); that didn’t work.
    3. Repaired disk permission s (only had two differences) so I don’t think this was the problem; that didn’t work.
    4. Moved the render files so they are no longer referenceable; that didn’t work.
    5. Moved the media files offline; that didn’t work.
I am using FCP 5.1.1 on OS X Version 10.4.6, on a Dual 2 Ghz Power PC G5, 2 GB DDR SDRAM Memory. I started the project on FCP 5.1.1 I didn’t create the FCP file in an earlier version. I also haven’t moved the files from one disk to another (I created the movie file on my primary drive). I have checked the support postings but can’t find something with exactly the same situation (one of the above items seems to have worked for most people) but I’ve tried these and the FCP file will not open. I would really appreciate your help on this! Thanks.
    Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I got FCP Rescue and opened the application. There isn't much to this application except "Trash" as I understand it. So, I clicked on Trash. After the third try of reopening the FCP file, it OPENED! Yea, which is great! So, that is good. Thank you for the suggestion; that was helpful!
While I can see the file and can export it to Quicktime; for some reason the movie file will only play about 5 seconds and then stop/start/stop/start, etc. I am using "Safe RT", Playback Video Quality is set to "Low", and Frame rate is "low". I've tried various combinations of these including Dynamic; the movie won't play for more than two-five seconds which makes it very difficult to edit.
I have 40 gigabytes remaining on my hard drive; could this be causing a playback problem? The playback worked fine before I couldn't open the FCP file. For some reason after I opened the file it won't playback smoothly.

  • Can't open FCP 6 project file in FCP 7

Just upgraded to FCP 7 and have been working on a project for sometime in 6. Just tried to open the project file and i get the error "This project is unreadable or may be too new for this version of Final Cut." Is there an update or fix for this? Luckily I can open on a friend's computer that is still running 6, but I thought it would upgrade project files with no issue. Can anyone recommend something? Thanks!

try opening on your friends computer and exporting an xml file and importing that into fcp7.

  • Can't open FCP project

    Hi everyone
I encountered a problem with my FCP project and I'm not sure how to fix it.
The current workflow is like this - A project is started on FCP 4.5 and later on brought to FCP 5 for final master to BetaSP. (Reason for doing this is becoz we can only master straight to BetaSP on da FCP 5 suite)
This workflow worked for the previous 4 projects.. but it failed with the current one. The project will open till about 90% and then FCP5 will suddenly quit. The project opens fine on FCP 4.5.
Any ideas on what I can do to save this project?
    Thanks for the help!
    Zee~

one thing you can try is to open the main project in 4.5
duplicate the playout sequence you need to playout
then create a new project and move the duplicated sequence into it
    save and close
then try and open the new project in FCP5 and see if that works for you
if thats a no go, then unmount your media drive
then try again to open the the project in FCP5
if it opens then remount the media drive and reconnect the sequence to the media

  • Can't open FCP 7 project in FCP 6

    Hi all,
I am running FCP 6.0.6 and I just got a project file that I need to open but it's a FCP 7 project file (and won't open on my system). I am trying to get them to export me an XML but that might not be possible. Would anyone be able to help me out and take my FCP project and export a XML that I can read on my system (or have any tricks that I can use to get it to open)? Unfortunately upgrading to FCP 7 isn't an option for us at the moment.
    Thanks so much!

#45 - Opening projects with older versions of FCP
Shane's Stock Answer #45 - How to export your project to work with earlier versions of Final Cut Pro.
Versions of Final Cut Pro aren't backwards compatible. So a project created with FCP 6 cannot be opened with FCP 5...and this even goes into the dot-updates as well. A project created with FCP 5.1.4 cannot be opened by FCP 5.1.1.
Nope, for this you need to use XML. Export your sequence as an XML sequence and import that in the other version of FCP. XML v3 if for FCP 5.1 4 and FCP 6. XML v2 is for FCP 5.0, and XML v1 is for FCP 4.5. So if you need to go from FCP 6 to FCP 5.0.4, you'd use XML v2. For FCP 7 projects that you want to open in FCP 6, XML v4.
To export an entire project, select ALL the bins in the Browser and then choose FILE>EXPORT>XML.

#44:  FCP acting weird - Trash Prefs
Shane's Stock Answer #44:  FCP acting weird or unusual.  Just not like is normally should
If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
    1)  Trash your FCP preferences.  Download the Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion:  http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/trashing_fcp_prefs.html
    2)  Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
    3) Shut down for 10 min.  Go for a quick walk around the block and get SOME exercise today.  Come back, turn on the computer and see how things are.
    4) (optional) Do the Hokey Pokey and turn your self about.  Results may vary.

  • I/O error--can't open FCP file

I have a Final Cut Pro project with video spread onto a few external hard drives. One of those drives seems to have gotten corrupted. I do have most of the materials backed up on another external drive (the corruption became apparent during a backup). My problem is that when I now try to open my FCP project I get an “I/O error” and cannot open.
    I can open other projects.
Any suggestions on what I might try? Do I change the paths to my backup drive? If so, how do I do that?
    Thanks

There are a couple of possibilities:
    1. Your project file is corrupt.
    2. Media linked to that project file has become corrupt.
Have you attempted to open an autosave of this particular project?
