"Can't open file clip; skipping it and continuing" problem

Dear People,
Opening an approx. 30 min. project that I had worked with many times before over the past year, I am now confronted with this message "Cant open file clip; skipping it..." for each and every single file in the project.
I click "OK" because I can't even get out of the project until I reach the end of these prompts.
I backed up project -saving media- to a few DVDs but when I try to open the project from the re-imported project, the same thing happens.
I am ready to accept the lost project and can always start from scratch by reimporting clips but I'd like to avoid both and particularly the latter if possible.

Hi Alexander - I would have to say that it sounds a bit like the dreaded corrupt project syndrome. Have you by chance emptied your iMovie trash? That action does not always cause disaster, but it CAN do, so is strongly advised against.
The only other cause I can think of is that you saved the project to an external drive that was wrongly formatted - it should be Mac OS Extended.

Help! Whenever I try to open one important file on icloud pages it says 'can't open file' - on my computer and ipod, too! Can I retrieve it?

I have a very important document and it is saved only o the icloud (which I thought would be fine). Only now, whenever I try to open it it gives me the message 'can't open file'. I'm a PhD student, and that file represents a lot of work for me. I did it on the ipad because I had to travel, and now I'm kicking myself. I need that file! Is there any way to get it back?

Thanks for your suggestion - I have tried that like 50 times (I was feeling the desperation and thought if I reset enough times it would do it), and I have also tried turning off and on the cloud, adding .pages to the filenames, downloading (didn't work) emailing to myself (did work, wouldn't open). When I looked at the package contents of the file, it did not have a file for content in it - or not one I can find. I'm afraid that it's lost the content within the file (though I don't now how it could!).
I've not had any joy with anything else I have read online. I think it's a more knotty problem than a simple off/on again job!

Today this file not opening anymore. Number's says: "Can't open file ..." And just one button "OK".

What I done to try resolve this problem:
1. Checked permissions and repaired.
2. Tried to open file in iCloud web-editor - no result. iCloud says that it can't open this spreadsheet.
3. Tried to convert file via some online file type converters to xls document (i will not put link here). Converter says that I have wrong file format.
Also I tried to open file in some other programs. No luck.
That's all.
File Work.numbers has been closed correctly and was no errors. Unfortunately, we have no any backup copy of this file anywhere. I know, this is stupid, but question now: How can I repair this document? Is any repair tools for iWork files?
The file seems like has right structure.

Unzipping Index.zip is passing without errors. It has many "iwa" files with binnary content and I can't get data from it. But, data in that file is very important for one person.
Could anybody help me to resolve my problem to restore Numbers document?

I am using OS X 10.8 on a Mac. This may be different if you are using iOS.
Does Numbers'09 still exist in your Applications folder? Maybe inside a new folder? Perhaps you could use Numbers'09 to open your documents.

I am also having a problem with iMovie 3 not being able to import my dv clip. The clip in it's entirety is about 15 minutes long, way past the 9 minute minimum. When I open the move project containing that clip it only imports the first 1.5 minutes, when I import it I get and error of -40, and knowing that it plays the entire 15+ minutes as qt movie I try to drag the clip into the time frame and get "Can't open file; skipping it and continuing". The clip works fine in iMovie HD at my computer at work. Can I try to splice the clip into smaller clips and exporting to use it at home?

There are some keyboard commands (shortcuts) you can use instead of having to go to the Apple menu -
Control-Eject          This brings up the Restart-Sleep-Cancel-Shutdown window.
Command-Option-Eject          This puts the machine to sleep.
Command-Control-Eject          This closes all apps and restarts the machine.
Command-Option-Control-Eject          This closes all apps and shuts the machine down.

Delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder. Then launch iWeb and see if it opens.
What happened was trying to open the html file reset the file path that iWeb saves in its preference file to tell it where to go when you launch iWeb. Deleting the pref file and launching iWeb creates a new file and iWeb looks in your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder for the Domain.sites2 file it uses to create your site.

Can't open files off of server in Yosemite and CC.

We recently upgraded our team computers to Yosemite. They are all iMac 27". We also installed CC apps after the upgrade. Now anytime we try and open a file that is stored on our team server we get error messages regarding filetype being unopenable or "someone else may have this open" which is not the case. We can copy the files to our desktops and they open just fine but as long as they are on the server we can't edit them. (My preferred workflow but not everyone on my teams) Anyone else found this issue and a workaround?

Go into your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and see if there's a file titled Domain.sites. If there is double click on it and see if iWeb opens.
If there is no Domain file there do the following:
delete the iWeb preference files, com.apple.iWeb.plist and com.apple.iWeb.plist.lockfile, that resides in your Home() /Library/Preferences folder.
go to your Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete its contents.

Can't open file syntax.vim

I have vim installed from extra (x86_64). When I start vim I get the following error:
$ vim

There is not a "current" directory on my system...
# find / -name "syntax.vim" -print
/usr/share/vim/syntax/syntax.vim

I had this problem, but the culprit was mercurial for me.
If you're getting the vim72 error check what's in that directory.
The only file in there for me was..
# ls /usr/share/vim/vim72/syntax/
HGAnnotate.vim
# pacman -Qo /usr/share/vim/vim72/syntax/HGAnnotate.vim
/usr/share/vim/vim72/syntax/HGAnnotate.vim is owned by mercurial 1.3-1
I tested it first by moving vim72 to vim72.bak and the problem went away, after that I uninstalled mercurial (I never use it)
Here's the loading order according to the vim documentation:
You don't normally set $VIMRUNTIME yourself, but let Vim figure it out. This
is the order used to find the value of $VIMRUNTIME:
1. If the environment variable $VIMRUNTIME is set, it is used. You can use
this when the runtime files are in an unusual location.
2. If "$VIM/vim{version}" exists, it is used. {version} is the version
number of Vim, without any '-' or '.'. For example: "$VIM/vim54". This is
the normal value for $VIMRUNTIME.
3. If "$VIM/runtime" exists, it is used.
4. The value of $VIM is used. This is for backwards compatibility with older
versions.
5. When the 'helpfile' option is set and doesn't contain a '$', its value is
used, with "doc/help.txt" removed from the end.

It was loading #2 for me, removing vim72 directory means it loads #4. (skips #3 since I don't have a /usr/share/vim/runtime dir)
