Can't open file. too old

I know this was probably asked before but I can't find any way to download iWorks 08 or Keynote 09. I must open a Keynote presentation and get the following message:
How can I resolve this? I don't even have a DVD drive on my Retina machine to install my old iWorks CD.
Thanks

I think I got rid of all my CDs since Apple and the rest of the world decided to move to online downloading about a decade ago. Thanks I will simply use Google Docs from now on.
Cheers.

  • Help! Whenever I try to open one important file on icloud pages it says 'can't open file' - on my computer and ipod, too! Can I retrieve it?

I have a very important document and it is saved only o the icloud (which I thought would be fine). Only now, whenever I try to open it it gives me the message 'can't open file'. I'm a PhD student, and that file represents a lot of work for me. I did it on the ipad because I had to travel, and now I'm kicking myself. I need that file! Is there any way to get it back?

Thanks for your suggestion - I have tried that like 50 times (I was feeling the desperation and thought if I reset enough times it would do it), and I have also tried turning off and on the cloud, adding .pages to the filenames, downloading (didn't work) emailing to myself (did work, wouldn't open). When I looked at the package contents of the file, it did not have a file for content in it - or not one I can find. I'm afraid that it's lost the content within the file (though I don't now how it could!).
I've not had any joy with anything else I have read online. I think it's a more knotty problem than a simple off/on again job!

  • Keynote can't open file because it is damaged

I've created several presentations in Keynote 09 that worked fine initially but suddenly won't open anylonger. When I click on the file, I get the following error message:
"Keynote can't open file because [filename] is damaged"
I was able to open two of the 3 affected presentations by opening them through File =>Open recent, then resaving them as a Keynote 08 file.
This lead me to think that maybe double-clicking the file to open it doesn't work and opening it through File =>Open does. Indeed, one of my Keynote 09 files that didn't open on double-click and generated the error message opened just fine when opening it though the application file menu.
I tried this on the other 09 files but that trick doesn't work anylonger. It seems to be totally random. The same file will open at times (through File -> open), but not at others. I'm at a loss here.
I was able to resave all 3 files to Keynote 08 and am able to open all of them now, but the problem I'm sure will persist with new presentations I create in 09. Any suggestions?
Maybe a directory problem? Anybody run into the same problem yet?
I have a feeling I'll br throwing 09 out the window and going back to the old version of Keynote.

I have had similar issues with KY '09. After working on a file over a few days, a message pops up saying it can not be saved. It created a backup copy that was saved so no work was lost. However, the original file is gone and only the backup remains. I can save it as a different name and go back to work but get the same issue.
This is a 10 slide keynote with mostly text and a couple images. *** did they do in this version. I too will probably revert as I work at a school that just purchased a site license for iWork '09 and iLife '09.
I am still testing the export of a recorded keynote to QT as my first export did not include the audio which was a problem in KY'08 and QT version 7.6 I believe.

  • Iweb installed on a new computer but i have this error message: Can't open file "~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain.sites2."

I have just installed ilife on my  new computer from my disk. I have several backups of my webpage from my  old computer. Everything would be great if I could just run the program. When I click the icon for iWeb I get the following message:  Can’t open file “~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain.sites2.”
Somebody please help! I desperately need to update my website.

In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
To open your domain file in Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

  • Can't open files from iCloud Drive on Mac

    Hi,
Can't open file from iCloud Drive on my MacBook Air (OS X 10.10.1).
I created new file (in Numbers for example). Then Numbers->File->Open->iCloud Drive->my_file.numbers and it says "Can't open file my_file.numbers".
I can preview the file by pressing Space, but openning from application and double-click on it doesn't work.
Files that were created earlear also not opened.
Does anybody know how to solve this problem? thanks.

    Using smtp.mail.me.com - also tried smtp.me.com
    SSL yes
    port 587
    SMTP Authentification Yes
Security SLS/TLS - also tried STARTTLS
User full **@me.com email address - also tried user name without @me.com
I have spoken to apple support this afternoon and we tried the variations shown above.
Support told me to wait for a day and try again!
After the iCloud authentication problem last night I changed all my passwords I wonder if there is an SMTP problem at me.com perhaps not reading the updated passwords?
I'll try and use the old passwords later.

  • Can't open file after Keynote crashed

I was working on a large Keynote file (about 130 Mb), when Keynote (4.0.1) quite unexpectedly. It happened a few times before, and I thought it was because of the instability of the new Leopard system. This time, however, I could not open the file after the crash. An error message was displayed: "Can't open file" followed by the path and the file name.
Does this happen to anyone else? Can anyone help? I hate to lose the work and go back to an early version.

Keynote and Leopard, especially in their newest iterations, are remarkably stable. That said, no file, program, or OS is totally immune from corruption. Whenever a program, or worse, your Mac, even starts to behave strangely, your first step ought to be to attend to it with a good fixit utility. Repairing permissions is usually fruitless, since it's highly unlikely there's a permissions problem. You already own *Disk Utility*, so you should try to repair the disk with that. Unfortunately, DU's disk repair is pretty wimpy, often unable to repair a problem, or erroneously reporting no problem when one obviously exists.
So, if you own a Mac, you owe it to yourself to buy at least one (but better, two) industrial-strength utility. There are really only three to choose from:
    1. DiskWarrior is an absolute must. It's unbeatable in rebuilding the directory, and the directory is usually what's corrupted. It can now fix files, too, which is also helpful.
    2. *TechTool Pro* is an excellent suite of fixits - directory, files, defrag, and some hardware tests. It also has a wonder feature, the eDrive. This is a small (10GB) bootable partition on your boot drive which has, among other things, TTP on it. If your main boot partition has a problem, you can boot from here and usually fix things. AFAIC, it's an absolute must on a laptop which you take on trips, far from your collection of fixit disks. You can also put DW on this partition, so you have everything you need right at your fingertips.
    3. *Drive Genius* is a relative new-comer, also a good suite of fixits, and, I believe, does backups, too.
I have 1 and 2, and that has saved me from catastrophe more than once. 1 and 3 would probably be good, too. (You ought to have more than one of these serious apps because one can sometimes fix something another can't - different proprietary algorithms.)
One last thing: if you have anything on your computer it'd break your heart to lose (and who doesn't), remember +The First Rule of Computing+: There are two kinds of computer users: those who have already lost all their data at least once, and those who have not yet lost all their data at least once. So: *backup, backup, backup*. I vote for bootable clones, done often (at least daily if you work daily), TimeMachine is pretty good, and there are other options. Pick one, and do it religiously.

  • Garage band can not open files because sound can't be found

can not open file. it says sounds are not on computer. but they certenly are! it offers me to buy it.... of i dont do.
i meen i used that sound to create that file...
one day it just worked again for some times. but now same problem again...

Please repost in the InDesign forum. It sounds like a permissions issue. Please state your OS, your version of InDesign, and the location of the files that you cannot edit.
BTW, in Lion, Apple decided that older files cannot be opened for editing. You need to open the file and do a save as to create an editable file. This is supposed to protect you from accidentally overwriting old files. I think it is a little big brotherish. But some have said they are happy with the new way of handling old files.

  • After o download the browser ,i get message that says can not open file what do i need to do to download the browser i have tried 5 times get same message

its the same shit i asked before after i download the browser i get message can not open file what do i do to dwonload the browser

That message is usually a sign that you tried to roll back to an earlier build of iTunes, but occasionally I've seen it connected to a new upgrade. This technique should fix things.
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • Vi error on nfs mount; E212: Can't open file for writing

    Hi all,
I've setup a umask of 0 for testing on both NFS client (Centos 5.2) and NFS server (OSX 10.5.5 server).
I can create files as one user and edit/save out as another user w/o issue when directly logged into the server via ARD.
    However, when I attempt the same from an NFS mount on a client machine, even as root I get the following error using vi;
"file" E212: Can't open file for writing
    Looking at the system.log file on the server, I see;
    kernel[0]: add_fsevent: no name hard-link! dropping the event. (event 2 vp == 0xa5db510 (-UNKNOWN-FILE)).
This baffles me. My umask is 0 meaning files I create and attempt to edit as other users are 777, but I cannot save out edits unless I do a wq! in vi. At that point, the owner of the file changes to whomever did the vi.
This isn't just a vi issue as it happens using any editor, but I like to use vi.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Hey, beer is on me!

    Hi all,
    Thanks for the replies
I've narrowed it down to a Centos client issue.
Everything works fine using other Linux based OS's as clients.
Since we have such a huge investment in Centos, I must figure out a workaround. Apple support wasn't much help as usual however they were very nice.
There usual response is "its unsupported".
If Apple really wants to play in the enterprise of business space, they really need to change there philosophy. I mean telling me that I shouldn't mount home directories via NFS is completely rediculus.
What am I supposed to use then, Samba of AFP? No, I don't think so. No offense to Microsoft but why would I use a Windows based file sharing protocol to mount network shares in a Nix env???

  • Ical alarm keeps trying to open file from old location

I have an iCal alarm to open an accounts file each day.
I moved the file to another folder,
and selected the new location iniCal.
    It always gives me this:
Could not open file because 'Old/Path/to/File'  could not be found.
When I look at the alarm section in the iCal event, there is a list of files.
When I choose the file (with the same file name) in the NEW folder, this list of files doesnt seem to update.
Is there of forcing iCal to open my new file path?
or a way of taking the OLD file out of this list?
    Thank you for your help
    Frazer

I just found how to removed the old files from my list
    in the terminal I type:
    open library/preferences/com.apple.iCal.plist
and then delete the entries under PersistentMenu
Would still love to hear a more user friendly way to do this.
And a way to just get iCal to open the new file path, or how best to report this bug to apple

  • Error message: "Can't open file"

Using Keynote 3.0.x I try to open a keynote file created a year ago and when I try to open the "Opening" dialog comes up, you see the progress bar, and then, I get the error message, "Can’t open file" followed by the file name. Any recourse?
PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   FInal Cut Pro 5.1

I later discovered the file was damaged. Went back to a backup copy and things were fine. Good think we have backups.

  • Error message: "Can't open file "[File path, file name].key"

If I attempt to open any Keynote files, I now get this error message.
"Can't open file "[File path: file name].key"
To clarify, the text in the square brackets above would be the file path and then the file name.
The file then will appear on the screen, but is unresponsive to any clicks or menu commands.
The files will open successfully on other Macs, so they aren't corrupt.
Also - I've just checked, and opening Keynote and trying to create a new presentation leads to the same problem: All screen menus / buttons are dead - all I can do is drag the window around the screen.
I've tried to reinstall Keynote, but this hasn't resolved the problem.
Is there some corrupt preference file (or similar) that I need to get rid of? Is there an easy way to do a complete uninstall of Keynote so I can try another install? Or is this a symptom of something else?
    All ideas gratefully appreciated!

All the issues I describe in my questions around this time re: Keynote were actually symptoms of a soon-to-die laptop. The Hard Disc was corrupting, and Keynote was the first application to be affected.

  • Can't open files in iCloud

Just recently, I haven't been able to open files stored in iCloud using either Pages or Numbers. When I try with either application, I get an error message saying, e.g.,  "The file “Wines.pages” couldn’t be opened." What can I do to fix that?

Possibly you have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed over 110 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs.
