Can't open files created or pasted by network user in my shared folder, why?

When a user creates a file or drops one over network in my shared folder I can't open it without changing permissions first.
After installing 10.7.3 update Windows computer were not able to access my iMac anymore. After solving that issue this one was left for me to fight with.
I we googled hard and tried all permission repair methods listed, nothing helped.
Files created by Windows SMB users have RW permissions only for that user, an No access for Everyone. There are no permissions defined for me or staff group or anybody.
Thank you for your ideas.

I haven't found a solution to this problem yet. All Windows users now access my Mac with my username, changing permission all the time became annoying. This is not a solution, rather an easy way out.
I Would very much appreciate if someone has a proper solution.

  • How can I open files created in ClarisWorks 2 or 3?

    Hi
Although I can still run AppleWorks 6 (in Snow Leopard) I am trying to 'future proof' my AW documents (WP, SS, DR, PT) by opening them and then saving them either as RTF, PDF, Excel, Word, or JPEG files.
Unfortunately, I can only open pre-1996 WP documents in TextEdit (all formatting gone) and cannot open pre-1996 SS documents at all. Is there any application that will open documents created in ClarisWorks 2 or 3? I've tried AW itself, and LibreOffice, to no avail. (I do still have the CW2 app but as I have an Intel Mac and no way of running Classic, that's no good to me).

    Hello,
to convert ClarisWorks files with AppleWorks, it is better to use AppleWorks 6.2.4 (or maybe 6.2.7), see AppleWorks for the modern day, a migration tip ; i.e. unfortunately AppleWorks 6.2.9 fails to open/convert many ClarisWorks files :-~
Concerning LibreOffice, you must avoid LibreOffice 4.3.0 ( which has a problem with many filters on OSX ): as you have some spreadsheet files, the best is probably to try LibreOffice 4.3.1 RC1 which must be able to open most of these files. If this fails, you can try to download mwawOSX in http://sourceforge.net/projects/libmwaw/files ( also free), i.e. I have corrected a file detection's problem in the new version of libmwaw, so it may work better than LibreOffice ( which includes an older version of libmwaw )....
    Notes:
    - another solution may be to emulate a Mac Classic ( using for instance miniVMac http://minivmac.sourceforge.net : free if you still have some Mac Roms :-~ ) and then to run your version of ClarisWorks.
    - if you find some files that mwawOSX fails to convert and that are not confidential, I may be interested to see them...

  • Indesing updated to latest version (10.0) but can't open file created yesterday.

Created a file yesterday with Indesign. Wanted to continue work today but Indesign requests to update to 10.0. I updated allready I even created this file with this version with this edition of Indesign but can't open it anyway.
    - Alert shown is: Cannot open "[documentname]" because it was saved with a newer version of Adobe InDesign CC (10.0). You must use that version or later to open the file. To then enable it to be opened in this version, choose Save As InDesign CS4 or later, or export to IDML. -
So to be clear; I created this document in this version of Indesign and it just doesn't open anymore although all possible updates are performed.
Am really in need of some help since it is about two documents and I just lost work like this...
    Kind regards,
    Linda

Aaaaaaahhhhh....FOUND IT!! The trick is to NOT use the alias-thumb in the dock, but to actually start up in the apps-folder where the Adobe Indesign 2014 edition is installed next to the 'old' edition.
Wow. Not sure to feel stupid or to be angry... pffff...
Back to work I say! (The best remedy...)

  • Can't open files created in CS3 with CS4

When I try to open a file that was created in CS3 I get this message:
Cannot open the file "OpenEnrollSample.indd". Adobe InDesign may not suport the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be issing, or the file may be open in another application.
This goes for both the InDesign files and the PDF files created with them. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Thanks for any help.

My Acrobat that is part of CS4 won't open the PDFs created by the CS3 InDesign file.  However, I do have the plugin to open PDFs in InDesign and that doesn't work with these files either.
These are files I created so I know that they are InDesign files.
I am running OS 10.6.8 and using CS4.

  • Which version of CS6/8.x is required to open files created by CC users?

I purchased and installed a "standalone" license of InDesign CS6 8.0 (the version installed is 8.0.2) but I can't open files created by our CC users. (version 9.1).We get a popup that the file was created in a newer version... blah blah blah. Is there a newer version of "Adobe InDesign 8.x" that will open CC/9.x files?
    thanks
    tom p.

Well that's disappointing... Back in September, before moving a dozen of our power users to CC accounts - I was told by either reseller or Adobe that I could get individual licenses of InDesign (CS6 version) for those users that only needed that single app (InDesign) in order to collaborate with everyone else. (I don't consider saving as idml as collaborating.) I'm pretty sure I was told that CC files could be opened by CS6.

  • 10.5.5 Can't open previously created Illustrator files!!

I've recently updated to 10.5.5 and now I can't open previously created Illustrator files, prior to the update, I had no problems. I get the error message- can't open the illustration with an OK box which, when clicked, opens the document in preview mode, but I can't do anything with the document!
    Anyone else have this problem?

That implies that you didn't preserve a bootable backup/clone as strongly suggested in

  • Photoshop CS 5.1 - can't open or create files

    Hi,
I have Photoshop CS 5.1 32bit and 64bit (running on 64bit windows), and sometimes it happens so that I can't open files (jpg, psd, ...) in it. When I drag and drop a file to photoshop, or click on Open file dialog, or even try to make a new document, nothing happens.
I have tried tricks with deleting preferences, but it didn't help. The only thing that helps is restarting windows - but this is not a practical solution for me.
I would expect some help from Adobe on this, since we pay a lot for their products!
    Thanks,
    Marek

I'm not literally "looking into it" as I'm not with Adobe nor can I reproduce the problem (and I am running Windows 7 x64 on several machines).  I'm really trying to catalyze the conversation here to help lead to a discovery.
I think, since Adobe has said they've not been able to reproduce the problem, it falls on those seeing the problem to try to isolate it further.
If it were me, I'd download and run the freeware tool Autoruns, then disable the software that's starting that you don't know you need.  Perhaps you'll discover what it is that's getting in the way of normal Photoshop operation, and can share that information here for others to use.  I actually use this tool myself regularly to keep my system clean and lean.

  • Iweb installed on a new computer but i have this error message: Can't open file "~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain.sites2."

I have just installed ilife on my  new computer from my disk. I have several backups of my webpage from my  old computer. Everything would be great if I could just run the program. When I click the icon for iWeb I get the following message:  Can’t open file “~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain.sites2.”
Somebody please help! I desperately need to update my website.

In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
To open your domain file in Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.

  • My iWeb site is receiving an error - can't open file.

I've got quite a big iWeb website (5.51GB) and this is the first time I encountered this problem. Today, I tried starting my website and it would not open. The error was "can't open file '.../domain ed.sites2.' I can't seem to fix it with the things I'm finding on this community support centre.

  • Fatal error : can not open file 'msvcrt.lib'

    Hello dudes !
I am using windows and jdk1.6. I want to develop one application using JNI. As steps for JNI, i have created Helloworld java class and compiled it, then created header file using jnh. After that i have created HelloWorld.c file.
To build dll file, i am executing the below command
    "cl -Ic:\java\include -Ic:\java\include\win32 -MD -LD HelloWorld.c -FeHelloWorld.dll".
Command giving the output as follows:
    HelloWorld.c
Microsoft (R) Incremental Linker Version 8.00.50727.42
Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
    /dll
    /implib:HelloWorld.lib
    /out:HelloWorld.dll
    HelloWorld.obj
LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'MSVCRT.lib'
Can anybody say why it is giving this problem.
Also i tried giving the msvcrt.lib path as the value for -MD option,
    cl -Ic:\java\include -Ic:\java\include\win32 -MD"c:\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\VC\lib" -LD HelloWorld.c -FeHelloWorld.dll
Then it is giving "can not open file LIBCMT.lib" .
Note : ...\VC\lib and ....\VC\include are added in the path.
Can anybody tell the solution for this ?
    Thanks in advance!!

    Hi,
I was with the same problem. You have set the your VCC environment.
    Path, Include and Lib.
In your directory VCC (2003 toolkit), you have a .bat file (vcvars32.bat)
Run the bat, or copy and past this command in your command prompt.
In my compilation, I run the code, wihtout -MD and -LF. In your, just:
    cl -Ic:\java\include -Ic:\java\include\win32 HelloWorld.c -FeHelloWorld.dll

  • Vi error on nfs mount; E212: Can't open file for writing

    Hi all,
I've setup a umask of 0 for testing on both NFS client (Centos 5.2) and NFS server (OSX 10.5.5 server).
I can create files as one user and edit/save out as another user w/o issue when directly logged into the server via ARD.
    However, when I attempt the same from an NFS mount on a client machine, even as root I get the following error using vi;
"file" E212: Can't open file for writing
    Looking at the system.log file on the server, I see;
    kernel[0]: add_fsevent: no name hard-link! dropping the event. (event 2 vp == 0xa5db510 (-UNKNOWN-FILE)).
This baffles me. My umask is 0 meaning files I create and attempt to edit as other users are 777, but I cannot save out edits unless I do a wq! in vi. At that point, the owner of the file changes to whomever did the vi.
This isn't just a vi issue as it happens using any editor, but I like to use vi.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Hey, beer is on me!

    Hi all,
    Thanks for the replies
I've narrowed it down to a Centos client issue.
Everything works fine using other Linux based OS's as clients.
Since we have such a huge investment in Centos, I must figure out a workaround. Apple support wasn't much help as usual however they were very nice.
There usual response is "its unsupported".
If Apple really wants to play in the enterprise of business space, they really need to change there philosophy. I mean telling me that I shouldn't mount home directories via NFS is completely rediculus.
What am I supposed to use then, Samba of AFP? No, I don't think so. No offense to Microsoft but why would I use a Windows based file sharing protocol to mount network shares in a Nix env???

Using Keynote 3.0.x I try to open a keynote file created a year ago and when I try to open the "Opening" dialog comes up, you see the progress bar, and then, I get the error message, "Can’t open file" followed by the file name. Any recourse?

I later discovered the file was damaged. Went back to a backup copy and things were fine. Good think we have backups.
