Can't open firefox after setup and transfer

I transfered applications and files from my old imac to new macbook. Also copied my firefox and thunderbird profiles. Thunderbird email works fine. But, when I try to open firefox, I get this message: "A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time." No other copy of Firefox is open and I have uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox, but no luck. What in Leopard would cause this? No problem with Tiger...
Thanks, Rich

Hi,
Have you tried some of the suggestions here?

I'd recommend trying to launch it in safe-mode and see if you get any error messages.

  • Can't open firefox after upgrading to the latest version. All programmes affected, basically nothing works and it's driving me mad!

Having updated firefox, it does not work. After an hour or so to try and open firefox, it says firefox has crashed and gives option to restart or quit.
Same with internet explorer and chrome - no response. After about an hour, excel finally opened but so slow to be able to do anything.
Also noticed a message bottom right corner of screen saying this version of windows is not authentic. I have windows 7 and it is legitimate and have not seen this message before.
I have read lots on the internet but nothing seems to match my problem if nothing working. I am unable to change settings or look at set up of any programmes because I cannot get in to them.....
Any ideas would be so gratefully relieved please!!

  • I can't open firefox after ATTEMPTING to update

I was prompted to do an automatic update or uversion update, not sure which. I did, as usual, and when I came back to the computer, it stated, as usual, that Firefox needed to restart, so I closed it, and it attempted to reopen the browswer. I could see part of my toolbars adn the words on my desktop background, but no actual browser window, with the yahoo screen or toolbar tabs, etc. I could blindly click, and assume I hit a button that said "Close" or "OK". I think it was telling me the software update failed. It closes, tries to open up again, I see the "well, this is embarassing," but still no browser screen. It repeatedly does this close/open until I just close it, because the actual window never opens. I started using IE and attempted to update firefox version from the mozilla website, but it won't happen. I followed forum topics related to the above issues, but they require making changes through the Firefox window, which now (the next day) will not open at all. I want to uninstall and reinstall, but I don't want to lose my bookmark profile in Firefox. I also attempted two failed tries at connecting to a livechat, which got me down to #1 then informed me it was unable to connect. Lastly, even using my IE window, when viewing forum topics, lines overlap and make it hard to read the postings. This is somewhat similar to the words showng up on m background all jumbled, but not in an actual browser window.

Do a clean reinstall and download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
You can initially skip the step to create a new profile, that may not necessary for this issue.

  • Can't open firefox after download. What's up with that?

Two weeks ago Firefox quit downloading attachments. Tried every online fix I could find and nothing worked. I uninstalled and installed the latest version. Program seems to download and it installs an icon on the toolbar but when you click on the icon nothing happens. I don't have time at work to debug a defective product. What a colossal waste of time. Why must software companies continue to dick with something that works perfectly and make it more and more complicated and unusable. I hate Internet Explorer but at least it works.

  • I can not open Firefox due to a virus. Can I un-install and then re-install Firefox and save my original setup and favorites

I can not open Firefox due to a virus.
When trying to open Firefox, the program directed the computer to shut down, and prevented me from going into Safe mode.
The virus only affected Firefox and rebooting in Safe.
The virus has been scrubbed, but I get the crash report every time I try to open Firefox. Can I install a new version of Firefox and still keep my bookmarks/ How can I rescue my bookmarks.
I am posting this from another computer location.

I used to have a slightly similar problem. Not the Virus problem, but the re-install of Firefox. The solution for this in the future would be for you to install and use FEBE Firefox Environment Backup Extension so you can fully back-up your settings, and other Addons, and Themes etc. that were within your FEBE backed up profile, so you can do the re-install of Firefox and then restore your saved profile that encompasses all of or most of what you presently don't want to loose. You could still do a FULL PROFILE FEBE, and re-install Firefox, and do a FULL PROFILE RESTORE, and if you might no longer have a virus problem after the restore. If so, your in good shape. I would find and run a good quality Anti-Virus scan, and if you wish to try to catch what you might have missed with the new scan I also suggest from www.IOBit.com that you add 2 programs that look to be better at catching problems than most other scan and repair utilities. The programs I suggest you add are called Advanced System Care - presently is version 5, and IOBit Malware Fighter, and one other. Their super powerful Smart Defrag that is faster than most Defrag programs and their is only one other Defrag program that comes close to it's power, and that is Diskepper, and you get Smart Defrag for free, and it's better, and faster than the others in my opinion. ASC Advanced System Care will clean your system and make it run faster specially if you have noticed it is slowing down for one reason or another , and it will do this with less resources than the other programs that you may already be using. The only thing they lack at present is an Anti-Virus portion which would add much more value to the already super programs. Good Luck. Let me know what you think after trying the noted programs. You should be very satisfied of the results.

  • Operating System Window XP Professional. I can not open Firefox. I have reset it and it worked for a few days. Now I can not execute it. Appreciate help.

Can not execute Firefox. So I updated it and reinstalled it. Then I reset it. For a couple days it worked fine. Now I am back to square one. Can not open firefox again.

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox and any leftover program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps one by one:
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu) and confirm all upcoming messages.
#Now, uninstall Firefox by following the steps mentioned in the [[Uninstall Firefox from your computer#w_uninstall-firefox|Uninstall Firefox]] article.
'''IMPORTANT:''' On Windows, the uninstaller has the option to remove your personal data and settings. Make sure that you do '''not''' check this option; otherwise all of your bookmarks, passwords, extensions, user customizations and other Firefox [[Profiles|user profile data]] will be removed from your computer.
After uninstalling Firefox on Windows, delete the "Mozilla Firefox" program folder, located by default in one of these locations:
    * '''(On 32-bit Windows)''' ''C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox''
    * '''(On 64-bit Windows)''' ''C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox''
#Go to the Windows Start menu and click on "Computer".
#In the Explorer window that opens, double click Local Disk (C:) to open the C:\ drive.
#Find the "Program Files (x86)" folder or "Program Files" folder.
#* On 32-bit Windows, double-click the '''Program Files''' folder to open it.
#* On 64-bit Windows, you will see a "Program Files (x86)" folder AND a "Program Files" folder. Open the '''Program Files (x86)''' folder.
#Look for a '''Mozilla Firefox''' folder. If you find one, right-click it and select ''Delete'' and confirm that you want to move the folder to the Recycle Bin.
Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
#Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
#Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!

  • I am getting an error message that "A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time" and I don't have any copy open.

I am getting an error message that "A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time" and I don't have any copy open. How do I correct this problem? I really like firefox because it runs many technical programs on the web that do not work with safari. I have FireFox version 32.0.1 installed on my MacPro PowerBook OS X 10.7.5. My activity monitor does not show any FireFox activity, so do not know what it is seeing

This worked, I used the method described in this link http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=365156, and opened the Mozilla profile screen with the terminal on my mac, using the language given in the links. Then I duplicated my original profile to save the bookmarks, etc. Put them in a folder listed Duplicate profile with the date. With the open profile screen, I deleted my original profile, created new profile folder and then a new profile. Note that profile cannot be created in the system library, it must be created on the disc, because the library will not allow writing into it. After I created my new profile folder, I dragged all my old information into it, and it worked. Firefox closed and the error disappeared. You must be VERY careful to make sure Firefox is closed anytime you are doing anything with the profile folders. I think that is what caused my original problem.

  • Can only open firefox as admin, otherwise get error to say a security component could not be initilaised. Have tried deleted cert8 file but it is not recreated and still will not open

Had problems with os and now can not open firefox unless I run as admin. Error appears - Could not initialise the application's security component. The most probable cause is problems with files in your browser's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard drive is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the browser and fix the problem. If you continue to use this browser session, you might see incorrect browser behaviour when accessing security features.
I have tried deleting the cert8 db file but it is not recreated when I start firefox again. HD has lots of room. Can you suggest anything else to try please?
    thanks, mandi

If deleting or otherwise removing the cert8.db and secmod.db file doesn't help then try a new profile.
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
    See "Creating a profile":
