Can't open Firefox, computer thinks it is already open

just got a new iMac, and wanted to transfer all my old Firefox info from my old machine. I downloaded the newest version of Firefox, and it seemed to work fine. Then I tried to move my profiles to the new machine (both on same network). Then I don't know what happened. I had to close Firefox for some reason, and when I tried to reopen it was told by my Mac that "A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time". I checked in Finder to see if I could force-quit Firefox, but according to Finder firefox was NOT running.
I first did a restart of the computer, but when I tried to open Firefox got the same message. Then I threw my Firefox application away and downloaded a new one. No help, same error message.
So how do I convince my Mac that Firefox isn't already running? Help, please!!!

• Unable to open firefox, dialogue box says program already open but not as far as I can see.

Recently when I log on to my pc and try to open Firefox, a dialogue box appears and tells me something like - firefox is already open, close firefox and try again. As I haven't opened firefox, I don't know what the dialogue box means. I went into task manager and the firefox program was not shown as open. I clicked the processes tab and deleted firefox from the list. I use Firefox 4 b9, this also happened when I had 4 b7. I uninstalled the former but no change. I reset system to earlier date, ran a virus check but all ok. I downloaded Firefox 3.6, then followed the upgrade for 4 b9 and all was ok until I was using my media player 2 days ago and tried to watch BBCiPlayer at the same time which is when the problem arose again. Also Firefox extremely slow to open. I managed to get online this time by going into History and clicking a website I used some time ago before all the above happened.

I am using IE to post this message on Firefox.
It has happened again. At 23:05 (UK time) I openedFirefox on the firefox site not IE. I opened my btinternet.com email account but at 23:41 the tab had not opened fully and still trying to load. I closed firefox and tried to open it again and here are the correct details of the dialogue box which appeared.
' (?) Firefox is already running. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox proces, or restart your system'.
I cannon do a restart at present as the tv part of my pc is recording a movie so I will try again later.
Anyone out there that can help us please? Thank you.

• Firefox won't open because it says it is already open when it ain't

Firefox won't open because it says it is already open. It appears Firefox is operating in the background. Tried to remove it but we get the same message to log out of Firefox. For 10 years we have been using McAfee with all features but it does not detect any virus or malaware etc. It appears it might be a malaware problem but even using all the latest Microsoft fixes hasn't helped. We used Vista Business Professional with all the latest service packs updated. We use the latest version of Firefox as of up to around 3 weeks or so ago when this issue first appeared.

I suspect you need more expert help but here are a few things you can try.
If you can't open Firefox(double click on Firefox desktop icon) try Safe Mode - Hold down the Shift Key as you double click on the icon>don't check anything on the page that opens>continue. If Firefox opens and works in this safe mode go to Add-ons> Extensions and look for "Ask". Then look at Add-ons >Plug-ins and again look for "Ask" . Remove, delete, disable any Asks. If you do remove any, close Firefox. And try again in Normal Mode.
The Ask website has detailed instructions for removal but you need to find it on your computer and have your computer in working order.
If there is no sign of Ask and Firefox is working well in Safe Mode you should work your way through this -
https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting%20extensions%20and%20themes
Eventually you might need to grapple with About:Config and even your Windows Registry but I would recommend a complete uninstall and re-install before that. Unfortunately that often doesn't work.
That all sounds very daunting but taken step-by-step you might get lucky early.

• Everytime I open firefox I get a window that opens. Doesn't happen with IE or Chrome

Every time I open Firefox I get another window that opens over the homepage. It is almost blank with a few lines at the top of the page and the words user registration. It has been happening ever since Firefox updated on my computer yesterday, even after uninstalling and reinstalling.

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.
Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"
If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

• When i open firefox, a small "user toolbar" window opens on top right hand side, i dont want that.

When i open firefox, a small user toolbar window opens in top right corner, please help as i dont want it, i close it but it takes to much of time to close and it hings up a bit evrytime.

This could be a feature of an add-on. Could you check to see whether you have any unrecognized add-ons and disable (or remove) them. In particular:
orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Add-ons > Extensions category
Then restart Firefox and watch for the toolbar, which hopefully will not appear.
You also could paste a list of your extensions here for review. You can copy them from this page:
Help > Troubleshooting Information
It's the second table, which appears below the Extensions heading.

• Can't delete Firefox 4 Get message to close open Firefox. It's not open.

If I try to update Firefox 4 or try to Remove it from my computer, I get a message telling me to close Firefox and retry. How can I close a program that is not open.

Firefox sometimes does not shut down completely. In these cases, if you don't want to restart Windows, you can "kill" Firefox using the Windows Task Manager.
Press Ctrl+Alt+Esc to call up the Task Manager. Depending on your Windows 7 permissions, this might not work smoothly, but hopefully it will.
Check the Applications tab for any open Firefox windows. If there is one, switch to it and close Firefox normally.
Next check the Processes tab. Firefox.exe should close down within 15-30 seconds after you close the program and it completes its file maintenance. If it lingers, you can select it and End Process. You also could look for plugin-container.exe, which is a process used to run Flash, QuickTime, and various other plugin content.
After that, Firefox should start up without error, although it may apologize for crashing.
Any luck?

• Can only open firefox once, have to restart to open more than one browser. can't upload any pictures the box doesn't pop up, my browser settings are diff now

Firefox just changed out of nowhere. I can only open firefox once... I used to have atleast 2 browsers up using them both on different sites, but now I can't have but one firefox browser up (not tabs, but firefox pages) Also when I am trying to upload images on ebay or any other site nothing happens... nothing pops up. I click it over and over and nothing even pops up. This is exactly what happens with the firefox browser in my first question... I can click the firefox icon a million times and nothing comes up. My tabs are all gone and it doesn't show anything like I had before this all changed? Did I reset everything some how? I do not recall clicking anything to go back... I do remember clicking an update because it kept poping up so I did it and that is the last thing I remember before this happened! UGHHH!

As I asked previously are you able to have tabs open as a window by using the right clicking option ?
When you close Firefox you should use
*Firefox button -> File -> Exit
Are you doing that ?
I suspect what may be happening is Firefox is hanging as it closes down.

A related possible problem is that you may have built up many copies of the restore files. These are stored in the Firefox profile. The easiest method of finding the profile location istouse
*use Firefox button -> Help -> Troubleshooting Information <br /> -> [Show Folder]
*see Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data
You need to look for the files sessionstore.js and numbered duplicates of that. Delete them.
* see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_hangs#Multiple_sessionstore.js_files

• When openning firefox from the task bar it opens to the last page viewed how can I change that

Whenever I open Firefox from the taskbar or the desktop icon it opens to the last session pages. Is there a way to change that back to the homepage.

hello svicinanza, that is probably caused by the user.js file in your profile (it shouldn't be present anyway in case you haven't created it manually, since it can be used to overwrite your custom preferences).
in order to resolve that, go to the firefox menu ≡ > help ? > troubleshooting information, click on profile folder/show folder and close all firefox windows afterwards. a windows explorer window should open up - in there delete the file named user.js and restart the browser.

• When I try to open firefox a large number of pages open I think it might be a virus

Ok I hope you wont mind honesty. I was trying to open a porn video and a flash notice popped on the screen and simultainiously pages and pages started opening. So I did an emergency shut down of the computer. Today when I tried to open firefox it was still there.

It sounds like you have Firefox set to open your windows and tabs when you re-open Firefox.
Let's try to fix this thoroughly so you don't have future problems:

• When I open a new tab is doesn't open to my set homepage as it would if opening firefox from start. It instead opens to a "default" page with pogo powered by yahoo, I want to change to google. How do I do this?

Opening firefox from begining, I have been able to set it to always open to google as it was in my old firefox default settings. If I remember correctly when you opened a tab, it would automatically open to the homepage. I'm not expierencing this with the new version. It is automatically going to the default page rather than the set homepage. (I just have learned to prefer the google search over the yahoo search over the years and am resistant to changing over, sorry)

A new tab opens by default as a blank tab (about:blank).<br />
If that isn't the case then an extension has changed that behavior.

• Why do I have to open firefox multiple times before it will open

When I go to open Firefox initially it either takes a long time to open but most times it will not open and I have to click the icon again sometimes more than twice. Then it will open multiple times.
The second thing is that the back arrow will often send me back two pages or more?

You need to be patient when opening Firefox, once your click, wait and it will load.
As for the back button sending you back, it may be due to the website you are visiting. You can also try the following troubleshooting method:
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
*In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
*In previous Firefox versions, click on the Firefox button at the top left of the Firefox window and click on Help (or click on Help in the Menu bar, if you don't have a Firefox button) then click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".
:
If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. • Each time I open Firefox, a previously visted website is open at the left side behind the home page, so the my home page is only partly filling the screen.

The "Sam's Club" website with my user ID and "remember me" box checked is the one that opens behind my homepage. This happens every time I open Firefox, but did not happen before I set up the Sam's Club sign in page.

Could you check whether you have dual homepages?
orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Options > General
If you see more than one URL in the Home Page box, delete the extra one and the vertical bar that separates them.

Edit: if the page appears in the sidebar, which also can be used to display bookmarks (Ctrl+b) or history (Ctrl+h), then it probably is caused by something other than your home page setting.
