Can't open folder (no permission)
My mum recently sold her iMac, and I kept her USB 320GB drive that has her Time Machine backup on it. I can browse the drive in Finder on my MBP, but as soon as I get to her and my dad's user folders (which I want to do to get their photos out for them) I get a red stop sign on the folder and if I try to open them it says I don't have permission.
This also happens if I Cmd + Click Time Machine and choose "Browse Other Disk"
I also tried using cp in Terminal and sudo, but this simply copies the folder WITH the red stop sign.
Any ideas how I can recover my folks' photos and documents?
Thanks

FTP exception: Can't open passive connection: Permission Denied
I have a File sender adapter, with FTP as transport protocol.
The adapter polls a directory each 60 seconds.
All works perfectly but sometimes I get the following error :
Channel CC_GBL_FlatFileSender: Error connecting to ftp server ...: com.sap.aii.adapter.file.ftp.FTPEx: 425 Can't open passive connection: Permission denied.
And 60 seconds after, no more error.
Any idee of why I get this error occasionally ?
In the sender file adapte, data connection is set to Passive. Do I have to set it to Active ?
Thanks in advance,
LaurenceHi
Data Connection
- Active
In active mode, the server establishes a data connection from its data port, port 20, to an end point chosen by the client.
- Passive
In passive mode, the client establishes a data connection to the port required by the server.
The default setting is a passive data connection. Only change this setting if you have a specific reason. This is what is recommended by SAP.
It is possible that Passive FTP mode may terminate session.
In this mode the server "listen" on a data port (which is not its default data port) and to wait for a connection rather than initiate one upon receipt of a transfer command. The response to this command includes the host and port address this server is listening on.
In the FTP protocol two ports are normally used, 20 and 21.
Port 21 is the control channel in which requests such as PUT, GET, and PWD are sent to the server.
Port 20 is the data channel in which actual files, folders and directory
listings are sent.
Normally, when you connect to an FTP site, the site establishes the data
connection to your PC (the client) on Port 20. However, if the site allows
passive transfers, you can have your PC establish the data connection. It is
recommended that you use passive mode for most transfers.

Can't open an application, permission denied error!
I can't open a recently downloaded application. I am getting a permission denied error? I have a a mac book pro with retina running Mountain Lion 10.8.4
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
ls -@Oen /A*/BeerSmith*/*/M* | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Post the contents of that window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. -
Hello,
I can't open this folder. It says "The Folder could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access privileges"
What can I do to open it?
Many thanks
(Just FYI - I can trash it, and also empty trash easily, but that's not what I want)Wow, that worked Thanks so much
But there's another question now -
That folder was copied from my external drive to my MacBook's desktop.
When it was copying to my desktop the folder was transferring 3,4 GB. And now I am able to open that folder I found out it's empty.... ???
When I choose Get Info it says Zero KB.
Is the folder empty or not?
Again many thanks -

How to Adjust Mouse Settings in Mac OS X Lion
By Bob LeVitus
7 of 9 in Series: The Essentials of Adjusting Settings in Mac OS X Lion
Some Mac OS X Lion users like to customize the way their mouse works. The Mouse System Preferences pane in OS X Lion is where you set your mouse speed and double-click delays.
If you have a notebook Mac, you may see a Mouse icon in the System Preferences application, but unless you have a mouse connected via USB or Bluetooth, it will just sit there searching for a mouse that's not there.
The first item in this pane is a check box that’s new in Mac OS X Lion: Move Content in the Direction of Finger Movement When Scrolling or Navigating. If scrolling or navigating in windows feels backward to you, try un-checking this box.
Next are the features you’ll find in the Mouse System Preferences pane (if you have a mouse connected):
Move the Tracking Speed slider to change the relationship between hand movement of the mouse and cursor movement on-screen.
The Double-Click Speed setting determines how close together two clicks must be for the Mac to interpret them as a double click and not as two separate clicks.
If your mouse has a scroll ball or scroll wheel, you also see a Scrolling Speed slider, which lets you adjust how fast the contents of a window scroll when you use the scroll wheel or ball.
If your mouse has more than one button, you see a pair of Primary Mouse Button radio buttons. These let you choose which button you use to make your primary (regular) click. Conversely, the other mouse button (the one you didn’t choose) becomes your secondary (Control or right) click. This is a setting many lefties like to change. Set the primary button as the right button, and you can click with the index finger of your left hand.

Can't open folder after failed copy
Hello,
I have a WD MyBookLive NAS drive which, up until Mavericks, I had been succesfully using as a Time Machine backup over WiFi. However after Mavericks it became unusable (This is well documented throughout this site and in other places - however there is no fix in sight).
Having given up on Time Machine for backup (and deleting it's backup archives in a failed attempt at troubleshooting) I went about manually copying my files to a share I had created specifically for this purpose on the NAS drive.
I did a test of about 5 Gb worth of files and all went OK, copying in about 5 minutes.
I then started to copy the rest of my data - about 750 Gb in all, mostly raw video and iMovie files. The copy began and proceeded as expected so I left it alone, However when I looked at it a few hours later it said that a copy had failed because the file "clip-135-02-05 05;27;15.dv" couldn't be read or written, with no option to either try again or skip over the offending file - it simply stopped the copy dead... Grrrr
When I checked the destination folder (after having to re-log in to it) with a Get Info it was 134Gb - so a lot of progress had been made in the copy.
HOWEVER, although I could do a "Get Info" on the destination folder, its icon is greyed out and I cannot open it. Worse yet I cannot delete it. When I tried to do so it deleted about 2/3rds of the content but stopped saying "The operation can’t be completed because the item “clip-135-02-05 05;27;15.dv” is in use."
I tried using "GraveYard" to delete it but it couldn't do it.
I'm now left with a 45Gb greyed out folder that I cannot open or delete...
Any Ideas??
Also, when I searched for "clip-135-02-05 05;27;15.dv" in the source folder, it came back with about 12 files - all seemingly legit, but in different folders - so I've no easy way of knowing which one of these may be the problem file (maybe none of them are, maybe the WiFi failed at a critical point while copying that file and corrupted the destination).
Either way it seems odd that a failure of ONE file during a copy could cause so much trouble...
Help!Thanks Pierre-Yves
Update:
I was running 10.9.2 - in fact the reason I ended up with this manual copy problem was because I was hoping that 10.9.2 may have fixed the Time Machine problem I mentioned above, but it didn't!
Continuing from where I left off after the failure above...
I thought I'd skip WiFi and use a direct ethernet cable to my router for a more reliable connection. I hooked it up, disabled WiFi and began the copy again from the start. (Copy speed was pretty much the same as with WiFi - I guess this is as fast as my NAS can handle things). The time estimation got to 17 hrs so I left it overnight. The next day it was still going with no apparent problems.
It got to about 620Gb out of the roughly 750Gb BUT then stopped again. This time the error was different:
"The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items."
...and again, frustratingly, no other option but to click "OK". Further, it gave no indication of the problematic file.
However, at least this time I could open and examine the contents of the destination folder to see what was and wasn't copied. By doing a few "Get Info"s on the various folders and comparing sizes and file counts I was eventually able to identify which files and folders didn't make it. (Oddly it was a selection from roughly the middle of the original folder list - sorted alphabetically, I thought it would have been at the end).
I started to copy the missing items, fully expecting to come across a permissions error at some point. However I didn't and was able to complete my "backup". When I compared "Get Info"s on the source and destination folders they showed the same number of items and roughly the same no of bytes - Good enough for me.
So, for now, my immeadiate problem of not being able to make a backup has gone away.
Nonetheless, my experience with this (and the well documented Time Machine problems) leaves me doubting OSx reliability (how can there be problems with permissions during one copy attempt but not the next?) and user friendliness. I'm not a Windows fan by any stretch, but at least when Windows has a problem copying it tells you which file it had the problem with and offers you to skip over it and continue with the copy. With OSx, it's all or nothing with no remedies and often no meaningful fault indication... Very frustrating...
One last thing: I had mentioned in my first post that I had been left with a Greyed out image of a 45Gb folder that wouldn't delete. I tried again today and, although it was still grey, it did actually delete - so at least that somehow fixed itself...
Thanks for your input.
I await the next OS update to see if things improve... -
Can't open folder. It "blinks."
Whenever I click my "Pictures" folder, the folder just blinks open and closed. Here is a youtube video of the problem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtyeJrFblOE.
Now, I've actually had this problem for several months, but it hasn't been a huge hindrance because I can still access the contents of the folder from iPhoto and Safari (ie. to upload pictures to the web). But I'd like to be able to open my folder. So I want to fix it.
I just ran the disk utility via the install disk. I ran disk repair (said nothing needed repaired) and I ran the disk permissions repair (which did some stuff but didn't solve the problem).
Does anyone have any ideas? Help?another update:
I got desperate enough to try re-loading the 10.4.11 Intel update package - to no avail; the blinking window bug still occurs.
Events-bugs are specifically as follows:
The "My Computer" window is open, but it shows in ICON VIEW. If I attempt to change this view to LIST VIEW, all open windows AND my menu bar flash away, and reappear as they were BEFORE I tried to change that view. The constant, repeat blinking IS NOT happening at this time, but I'm sure if I try to access the folder that started all of this crazy behavior, it would begin the repeat flashing. Also, if I try to change the view of my root folder from ICON to LIST, the blinking will resume.
I've got four 500GB drives in this Pro Mac, no RAIDs at all. All of the permissions on these drives were somehow changed. When I tried to reset the permissions on the drive which contains the OS, I got the following error:
"The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "ZillaHAL" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)."
As it is, the windows are stable - as is my menu bar - but I cannot continue on not knowing which folders I can click on and which are corrupted. And these random permission errors...? What has caused them and what must I do to correct these bugs? I'm going to run Disk Utility again, although previous checks didn't reveal any problems.
Thank you. -
HELP Backup didn't work. Can't open folder in Time Machine
I backed up my macbook pro before I sent it in for repair. Less than a month later I had to do the same for my wife's macbook pro. I backed it up the exact same way that I did mine, using a usb connection to a 2 TB hard drive that was already set up as a Time Machine drive (half time machine/half file sharing). When I got my computer back, no problem. Numerous backups that I had done were all there, ready to be harvested. My wife's backup is a totally different story. Her computer was replaced for a new one. I got it home and tried to use the Time Machine backup when I first booted up the new Pro. But the folder labeled "Wife's Macbook Pro" is lokced and will not open. The error messege says something to the effect: "This folder is locked. Contact your network adiminstrator". I am completely lost now and really don't want to have to deal with the wrath of my wife if I don't have to. Any help is much appreciated!
I apologize for stressing the point, but, again, can I ask why you're trying to go through Time Machine to get to your Reunion files? From your first post, it sounded as though you recovered everything from your backup (presumably you used the "Recover from TM backup" option when you installed the new hard drive?)
Does Reunion run normally when you launch it from your Applications folder (forgetting about Time Machine for a minute)? If so, do you have your current Reunion data somewhere in your Documents folder (or wherever you stored it before?) If not, and you believe you still have Reunion files in your backups, you should quit Reunion itself, then go into the Finder, go to the Time Machine interface, and locate your data file. Not the Reunion application, the family data file. Then recover that from the backup.
Again, the reason you're seeing what you're seeing through Time Machine is that TM is not "aware" of most applications (ie, you can't just launch any app, go to TM and expect that app's data to appear in the interface). It works for Mail, Address Book, iPhoto and the Finder. It's the Finder you're experiencing when you're going back in Time Machine, not Reunion itself. You just happen to be looking at the Reunion icon when you do so.

Can't open Folder in Disco Plus
Hi all!
I have an existing workbook in which I want to add an item. I open the Edit Worksheet dialog, on the Select Items tab. On the left, the source folder seems to be available but when I click on the little + to expand the folder, nothing happens. Other folders's in the business area can expand succesfully.
I then tried to add the entire folder by right click, Add to to Worksheet. This results in an error stating:
"Model manupulation via stale object. Server writes and pass through read can only be made on objects attached to the model instance of oracle.disco.model.corbaserver.FolderImpl made stale: removed during merge in oracle.disco.model.corbaserver.EULImpl"
How do I fix this?Hey Juanita.
The BIS views that you're referring to are the 'before generation' (BV_) and the 'after gen but not fully generated' (FV_) views).
I'd talked about this very recently about which BIS views you want to be pointing to (thought it was you but 'scuse my bad memory if not).
The key is to base your Discoverer reports against the FG_ BIS views (ie: fully generated ones). They are the ones that have all the KFFs, DFFs, etc. fully in them (ie: dynamic columns that you've defined via setups / choices in Oracle Apps) and the only ones you want to use.
Therefore, when you regenerated the BIS views, I'm not sure if anything really happened in the sense of Discoverer in that the BIS view definitions in the EUL should be pointing to the _FG views.
However, if it's something you set up with the BIS view definitions in the EUL or had a contractor who didn't know fully what they were doing (hey there's a stretch ... even though I'm a contractor!), then the BIS views in the EUL maybe pointing - wrongly - to the non-FG_ view version.
Best answer - rewrite or point your BIS view definition in the EUL to the FG_ version. But may require a rewrite of your Disco reports.
What I would do to start would be to have a business area with the folder(s) in question set to be pointing to the accompany FG_ views (ie: HRFG_ANALYSIS_CRITERIA_V and HRFG_JOB_AND_POS_REQUIREMENTS) and then write the same kind of report against those folders and see what happens.

Can't open folder in dock?
I have a number of folders in a stack for easy access. However, when I click on the folder icon, it does not open, just brings Finder to the front. In that same stack I can open any individual file. I tried typing killall Dock in Terminal to no avail. Any ideas?
You mean that you click on a folder, it pop up the stack, then if you choose a file, it opens well, but choosing a folder does only bring Finder to front ?
Maybe this is a problem with Spaces. Did you look at every spaces to see if the folder is not opened on a Space dedicated to Finder ? Spaces can act strangely some times, like not changing current Space according to current front most application. -
Can not open folder: Lists "Kind" as "Unix Executable".
I am trying to dowload images from a Mercury VQ2220 camera. It connects via USB, and can be read as a drive. On PCs, the folder 100V2210 holds the images, but on my Mac, the folder won't open. If I click it, it tries to open in colorsync. When I check info on the folder, it lists it as a unix executable instead of as a folder.
Can anyone make any suggestions on how to get into this folder on a Mac?Have you by any chance, formatted the camera from the windoze computer? If you have, try formatting directly from the camera's menu. Also, this is a pretty old camera is it not? Internal memory and no Mac "drivers"? It may simply not "work" with your Mac. Since you have a windoze box, you might want to move the actual picture files out of the folder and then transfer them to your Mac via ethernet or CDRW...

While using terminal, any commands with sudo returns the statement seen in the heading... I have only a basic idea of whats happening, so please try and make the solutions simple.. much appreciated
Are you being prompted for a password? Are you using the same password you sign in with? Try just entering sudo with:
sudo su -
It will ask you for a password and then give you a stern warning about acting as root, where you can really mess up your computer for good if you are not careful. If it won't change to the root account you have a permission problem or a credentials problem. -
Can't open folder or add directory, window disappears
I am using mac mavericks running latest lightroom on creative cloud.
Whenever I try to add a folder, and navigate to a folder on my internal HD the window disappears. I've tried quitting/reopening and updating Lightroom and nothing changes. The last time I tried it I received the following error: https://www.dropbox.com/s/pucv89mw3uyoe17/Screenshot%202013-12-15%2014.03.09.pngHow to Adjust Mouse Settings in Mac OS X Lion

Can't Open Folder in XMLSPY after B1iSN PL11 Upgrade.
Hi,
I've recently upgraded to B1iSN PL 11.
I've followed all the steps in the guide .
and it seems that the login method has changed due to the upgrade.
when I try to edit/view my BIU with the previously setup configuration in XMLSPY I get the following error :
HTTP error : Internal error in server 'localhost'
I've made sure the xcellerator.cfg xcl.webdav is set to full.
and I've also tried to overwrite the new xcellerator.cfg with the previous one but that does no change.
I've also noticed that B1iSN webpage has a new login/password method rather than the usually explorer box that used to pop up.
any help is much appreciated.
NC.Hi Nadav,
