Can't open folders in Dock or Spotlight

Hi all,
This is a continuation of my previous post. I've been unable to open my Home or Applications folder from the Dock, now I see that I can't open any folder from Spotlight either.
I've done an Archive & Install, Repair Disk Permissions, reboot, etc.
Any ideas? This is getting creepy...
Thanks,
Andrew

Hi Andrew, iirc, another user didn't help either, so if that is correct, and an A&I didn't help, I suspect you should try to drag this whole folder to the Desktop & reboot...
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
can always move it back & reboot if need be.

  • Can't open folders or emails by double clicking mouse

I can't open folders or emails by double clicking my mouse. I was using a corded Apple mouse, so I switched to a Logitech cordless optical mouse, still can't open them. I can open my folder with command O, but not email. Any suggestions?

This worked for me: I trashed my mouse prefs, then restarted, then -- goto System Prefs --> Keyboard/Mouse --> Mouse --> Double-Click Speed: Now move the speed a minimum of one notch below FAST.
Yesterday I installed a Logitech MX Revolution, cordless mouse and lost the ability to double click with it and with my Mighty Mouse. Resetting the double click speed below FAST miraculously reset.
    All seems OK now.

  • Can't open folders to show pictures as large thumbnails permanently.

Can't open folders to show pictures as large thumbnails permanently.

    Thanks for your reply.
I'm running Windows 7 on a PC, using Photoshop Elements 7
It used to be I could open a picture folder from Elements (File>Open) and instruct the files to show themselves as large or extra large icons (View>Large icons), I would then open one or more and edit them, go back to the original folder to open another and still see the files as large icons or whatever I'd chosen before.
I can no longer do that - as soon as I come back to the folder, all the files have reverted to List view. I then have to go back to the View options. On the other hand, if I open the same folders from Windows Explorer they all show as large icons, as I've chosen to view them, and they remain so for as often as I open the folder.
I bought a brand new copy of Elements 11 and installed on the same computer (after uninstalling El 7), believing that maybe my copy of Elements 7 was corrupt. But the same conditions obtained with El 11. I un-installed El 11 (didn't like it, too cluttered for me) and have re-installed 7.
I've picked up a couple of viruses along the way which I get rid of mostly by restoring the system to a previous state. I installed a trial version of Norton while El 7 was working properly and later uninstalled it, believing maybe it had something to do with the subsequent misbehavior of El 7.
I've noticed a couple of other quirks; after I click File>Open the window with my picture folders opens maximized, it used to be I could re-size it but not any more, even though the mouse pointer turns into double arrows along the edges and corners. Also, when I clicked on Save the pointer immediately defaulted to the Save box, but not so any more.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Also, can you right click it and then click Open? what happens then?
if you do not have right click enabled, hold control, and click the folder. then let go of control and click Open.

  • Can't Open Folders

    Using Leopard 10.5.2
When I try to open a folder, any folder, including the hard drive, the ipod, folders on the desktop, etc. this happens:
1st -- a window opens. In some cases I see the contents of the folder in it, but usually it looks completely empty.
2nd -- after about 1 second the window disappears and everything on the desktop including the hard drive image also disappears.
3rd -- after about 1 second everything on the desktop reappears, complete with the hard drive and other folders. They are all closed.
Spotlight can find folders within folders, and files within folders. Applications can be opened from spotlight or the dock, but not from any folder, such as the applications folder. Some folders can be opened from Recent on the apple menu, but others can't.
I spent a couple hours on the phone to Apple yesterday and they first had me create an account for a phantom user. Logged off as myself, and logged on as the phantom user, and did not have this problem with that account. New problem being: can't access any of my files, because they're all associated with the original user account.
Next we did some complicated stuff to get access to my desktop folder from a new super-administrator account and moved my desktop into the "shared" folder. Went back to my account, and now everything that was on my desktop has disappeared and I still can't open any folders, so I can't get anything that was on the desktop for that account back.
Next we reinstalled the system software using the install and archive option.
This was also a giant step backwards, because it installed 10.5.1 and reset preferences etc back to the defaults but it did not affect the folder bug. So then I ran software update and installed 10.5.2 and now I'm up to about 10 hours of trying to make things work and have only succeeded in making things worse.

Hi I exactly have the same problem . I remarked it noon on my G5, Leopard 10.5.2.
I have 2 Internal Hard Drive.
On the primary one, i have the same symptoms : i could not open folders. Everything stops and restarts. Sometimes it even happens after several clicks in teh lateral bar of the Finder
On the Second internal Hard Drive everything is OK
I thought about rights.. i launched some maintenance & cleanup scripts using ONYX, then reboot... it 's the same.
It's so strange : i reinstalled Leopard from scratch two weeks ago >
I launched backups with Time Machine + Capsule
    Recently i installed iLife.
It seems, that after install of Leopard everything was ok.
Recently, one of my update (iDVD) failed. And Safari.
This problems come from my RAM i think :
When i reinstalled Leopard, i should unplug all my upgraded non-Apple RAM.

  • Can't open folders/explorer after sleep or hibernation

I recently started to have this problem where when the laptop is woken up after either a sleep/hibernation, I can't open any folders.  I can't open the computer icon, any folders on my desktop and the Windows File Explorer.  I can, however,  open the files (Excel, IE, Firefox) on the desktop even when this problem comes up.
It doesn't happen every time the laptop is woken up from either state but happens at least every other day.
In order resolve the issue, I have to restart the computer or log out and re-login.
I thought I had some corrupt files so I re-imaged the HD to its original state, but the problem came back.
    Any thoughts or suggestions???
    I have X230 with Windows 7 64bit
    Thanks.

  • Can't open folders with double click...

i've since imposed parental control on the mac for my 2 kids and since then have not been able to open folders with a double click any suggestions.

No, I was trying to be humorous, but obviously failing there.
I don't know anything about parental controls whatsoever.  Seriously, I have no idea.

  • Unable to open folders in dock

In an attempt to clean up my desktop, I dragged some personal folders down to the dock next to the applications folder. When I double-click on them, they won't open and a question mark appears over them. I can't use any of the menu options like "show in finder" or "open". Nothing happens!
I also can't find them using spotlight (folders or files). I don't have copies of what is in the folders.
What did I do wrong (besides not copying the folders!)????
And more importantly, how can I access these folders????

Hi whiteninja, and a warm welcome to the forums!
When I double-click on them, they won't open and a question mark appears over them.
Oh oh, that means they've been moved or removed/trashed since moving there.
Spotlight won't be reliable, I'd get EasyFind...

Use it to search your whole drive for case insensitive & show invisibles...
for Folders Only with part of the name at least.

  • Can't open folder in dock?

I have a number of folders in a stack for easy access. However, when I click on the folder icon, it does not open, just brings Finder to the front. In that same stack I can open any individual file. I tried typing killall Dock in Terminal to no avail. Any ideas?

You mean that you click on a folder, it pop up the stack, then if you choose a file, it opens well, but choosing a folder does only bring Finder to front ?
Maybe this is a problem with Spaces. Did you look at every spaces to see if the folder is not opened on a Space dedicated to Finder ? Spaces can act strangely some times, like not changing current Space according to current front most application.

  • Can't open folders in Favorites Panel-Bridge CS3

I just added a couple of folders to my "favorites" panel, so I can find them more easily.  I have only two folders in the favorites panel.  But when I click on them, nothing happens.  They don't open.  At the bottom of the screen, the loading icon rotates (next to number of items, and number hidden) but then goes away and nothing happens.
I can open these folders from the Content Panel.
    Thanks in advance ...

Not sure if I understand you correctly but pointing to a folder in the
favorites should show the content of that folder in the content panel, is
that what you can see or do you expect something different to happen?
If you point to a folder in the favorites panel and use right mouse click
you have two options, remove from favorites and reveal in Finder.
Try reveal in Finder and see to what folder you end up and check if it has
    content.
And when you say 'can open in the content panel' from what point did you
start, the folder panel or the favorites panel?
I can open these folders from the Content Panel.

  • Can't open folders on a network

This seems to be a new problem, only appearing since I have moved from my G5 (10.4.11) to a new iMac (10.6.8).
When I access another Mac via Airport (using Safari and typing in an address such as afp://192.168.1.3), I can access the other Mac by typing in the password, its disk will appear on my Desktop, but a small red dash appears in User folders such as Desktop, and if I try to open the folder it says I don't have permission.
How do I get around this? I should ahve permission for everything because all the Macs involved are mine.
Another thing: I know Macs are smart, but how on earth did it know to put a red dash in this post, when all I did was type in a dash surrounded by brackets?

    Guy Burns wrote:

You can only access the folders which the user account you used to log in to the remote Mac is allowed to access. The icon says this account does not have the permission to read the folder you're trying to read. If this worked with the previous OS version, it means you had custom permissions, which were re-set when you upgraded the OS.
how on earth did it know
It's a new function introduced in Snow Leopard. It's called ESP (extra sensorial perception, or mind-reading).

  • Can't open folders, please help :(

Well it appeared couple of weeks ago, I thought it's my USB problem, but after I tried to open folder on Mac I had the same problem.
So basically this is what happens:
When I open any folder, lets say "folder one" and it contains some files and folders, lets say "folder two" I can open any files or folders inside of the "folder one". "folder two" sometimes is invisible and becomes visible only when I starting to move everything in folder (everything what I can't actually see), after they appears, but the names of folders and files sometimes just in black square, sometimes in black lines, sometimes has very very black shadow(not like the usual one). After I wait for an hour and open and close "folder one" eventually I can open and see files, but it feels like it gets worse and worse... Is there any chance to do something without reinstalling?
    Thank you!!

Incidentally, another thing I did was expand one of the offending folders in List view in my Documents folder, so I actually can't even open my Documents folder in Finder. In other words, say I had a folder in my Documents folder called "Pix". In the List view of the Documents folder, I clicked the arrow next to "Pix" and since that expanded "Pix," which I can't seem to open, it shut down the Finder window. So now whenever I try to open my Documents folder, it shuts down the window, since it's also trying to open the (expanded) "Pix" folder. A stopgap measure for un-expanding that folder would also be appreciated, if anybody has any smart ideas.
    Thanks.
