Can't open H264 MOV file in 8.0

I took some video this weekend at an auto racing event using a ReplayXD camera.  According to their website they use H264 codec.  I can play the files just fine using Windows Media Player.  However when I try to drag and drop them into Premier Elements 8.0 it says it doesn't recoginize the file type or the correct codec is not installed.  This is where I am confused.  Since the file plays correctly in WMP, doesn't that mean the codec is already installed on my computer?  Any ideas on what to do next?
FYI I'm using Win 7 x64

Playing and editing are not the same thing... and what PreElements will or will NOT edit has changed over time
First thing to do is determine the exact codec inside that MOV file

  • How can I open a .mov file with iMovie?

    Hi,
I keep trying to open a .mov file in iMovie and it isn't doing it. Is that not a recognized file extension? Should I convert the video file somehow?
    Thanks!

.mov is just a container for a variety of video codecs, some of which are not recognized by iMovie.  You will need to convert it first with a third party app such as Media Converter (which is free, see:   http://media-converter.sourceforge.net).
Another free app  VideoSpec (see:  http://videospec.free.fr) is useful for identifying all the details of a video clip

  • Can't open or move file - In use by Mac OS X

I have a file (movie) I am trying to move to a new external hard drive. I can't move it cause it says it is used by Mac OS X and cannot be moved or if I try to open it says it can't be opened.
The permissions are set correctly on this file and it plays just fine in iTunes but I can't open it in quicktime or I get that message. Anyone have any ideas to try? The Locked check box is not checked in the info window and my user has read and write access to the file.

Well I will never know what happened with that file. I tried moving it again and got the error message again. Got another message after that saying do you want to continue to move items you can move (though this was the only file I was trying) I said continue and then the file disappeared off my system.
No idea what happened with it.....

  • Can't open some .mov files

When I try to open some of my older (2007) .mov files with either QuickTime Player or QuickTime Player 7, I get two error messages in series from QuickTime. First: "Searching for movie data in file "NC051large.mov". After a minute or two, Quicktime says the file can’t be found. If I cancel the search before it completes on its own, another message appears: "The movie could not be opened. The operation couldn't be completed. (OSStatus error -128)”. I did Spotlight searches, but the NC file apparently does not exist on my iBook. Many related .mov files of the same vintage open fine in both versions of QuickTime, but many others have the problem I am describing.
When I double click the icon for any of the problem .mov files in the Finder, Snow Leopard tries to open them with QuickTime Player 7, which is the program the movies originally were saved in. In desperation, I’ve tried unsuccessfully to open and/or convert three of the problem files with a variety of video editing applications, including: File Juicer, iSkysoft Video Converter, iSquint, Prism, and MacTheRipper. Nothing can either open or convert them. Attempts at conversion hang the application(s).
The Get Info window identifies all three files as QuickTime movies with the following Codecs: Sorenson Video 3, ACC, and Sprite. Curiously, the Preview section of the Get Info window is able to play one of these movies just fine, but the other two play in this window only as black boxes.
While my searches on the web, Apple’s support site, and this forum have found many problems where QuickTime is unable to open .mov files, none of these problems appear to be like the one I’m having. I’m at a loss at this point and would appreciate any suggestions that might be implemented by a mid-level user like myself.

"Searching for movie data in file "NC051large.mov"...
How large are these files according to the finder? Sounds as if this file is a QT "reference" file which merely "points" to the second file which actually contains the data. If you deleted the file (or did not copy it along with the reference file), then you cannot open/play the reference file. The second message error, -128 (userCanceledErr) is a Menu Manager Error telling you it could not complete the current operation because you cancelled what it was doing.

  • Can't open Quicktime .mov file (Error -2048)

I can't open and run an 11mb QuickTime .mov file that was created, I'm pretty sure, on a Mac. I'm using a PC running QuickTime 7.2. Colleagues using PCs with QuickTime 7.0 and 7.1 can't run it either. The guy who created the file apparently has no problem running it on a Mac. My full error measage is "Error -2048: Coundn't open the file because it is not a file that QuickTime understands". Any ideas anyone?

Ask the guy that made the file what codecs are used in it. Mac users can open, save and edit .wmv files and he may have put one inside a .mov container. It will never play on a PC unless saved as .wmv extension.

    Help!
    Thanks, Mark

Unfortunately, the error message gives no details about what codec might be missing or what it needs.
If the file can't be opened in QT, it only means you cannot use the QT "Inspector" window to check what compression formats were used to create the file. It does not mean you can't use the Finder "Information" window to check on the compression formats or use a third party media information window (e.g., like VLC which will open many compression formats not supported natively by QT) to determine what kind of data is included in the MOV wrapper. If the file cannot be opened in any app, it is usually a good sign that the file itself is corrupted.
It's a stupid error message. Apple should do better than that.
Error trapping is quite extensive but there are still many areas which require human oversight. The message is telling you that either the container has a problem (e.g., not properly terminated, non-standard, or corrupted) or that one or more of the compression formats used is not supported by your current codec component configuration or that the data was encoded using non-standard settings or preferences not supported by QT or that the fourCC code does not match the data contained in the file or that there are timecode inconsistencies, etc., etc., etc. In short there are a near infinite number of possible problems for which it would be very difficult/nearly impossible to program error trapping depending on your sourcing of content and how you process it before it reaches the player app. Think of it like trying to play a BD disc in an DVD player.
I'll call Apple support when I get a chance.
Chances are good that they will end up sending you back here. In any case, it is often a good idea to post a sample file for examination by other QT users. At the very least, they should be able to tell you if the sample file will play on other systems which would indicate whether or not the file itself is bad and under the best of circumstances whould allow them to examing the file in detail for various common problems.

  • Recently updated Mac OS 10.5.8 to 10.6.8 and and can not open exisiting Illustrator5 files or save new files.

I recently updated my MacBook Pro OS from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8 and can not open existing Illustrator5 files or save new files can someone help?

I think you have a corrupted upgrade. Do you have a backup of your old system?
Here's what you should do for now:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

Can't open quicktime movie that I exported from FCP 5. Help!

    What arrow?
Have you tried opening the file in FCP?
If there is no error message and it will not play in QT7, it is quite possible the file is corrupted. You will need to go back to the original project and re-export the file.

  • How can I sync a .mov file of a home-made video?

How can I sync a .mov file of a home-made video?

Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • Error opening .avi movie file

When I try to open an .avi movie in quicktime I get a message that says:
"Error opening movie. The movie could not be opened." How can I open the movie? Or can I? Thanks...
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    turtle007 & Mew Gull,
    To Apple Discussions!
Open the file with QuickTime Player.
Open the Movie Info window (Command-i).
Note the name of the video codec used in the file.
Do a Google.com search for codec name +Mac and download one appropriate for your OS and computer.
Quit and relaunch QuickTime after installing the new codec.
    Try the file again.
Thanks to QuickTimeKirk for the above info.
If the above does not work, then use VLC Media Player or Perian (AVI and FLV support)

  • I cannot open my .mov file in Quicktime ... It says error mid "conversion"

I have a 1.34 GB .MOV File and when I try to open it in Quicktime is says "converting" than an error message pops up and says :

To see if additional software is available that will enable QuickTime Player to open the movie, click Tell Me More.
I have tried on both my imacs and neither of them will open. It is really frusturating. Is there another program I should download?

  • Opening a .mov file on a Mac across a Windows network causes hang

QuickTime player hangs when I try to open a .mov file on a networked Mac OSX machine from my Windows XP machine. This happens 80-90% of the time; that is, not every time, but most of the time.
I've tried this from 2-3 different machines, and get the same result.
Interesting thing is that, if I'm viewing the directory that the .mov file comes from in Windows Explorer, Windows Explorer also hangs - so it looks like something bad in going on in the Windows networking layer.
File opens fine when I open it locally or on another Windows machine on the network.
We're actually accessing the QT SDK from an app we're developing. We first noticed this behavior in our app, and decided to see if we could repro the problem in QT player. Sure enough, we could.
Is there somewhere else I can log this message so that it will come to the attention of the SDK group? This a major problem for our app that I need to resolve one way or another.

A MOV. file can be anything.
I would suggest you download and install Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.

  • Using Aperture 3 and Lion I can no longer view .mov file

Using Aperture 3 and Lion I can no longer view .mov files from a Canon G11. I get a thumbnil which is a triangle with !. If I right click I can open it with Quick time. I cannot import any of the files into iMovie as it does not recognize them in Aperture or iPhoto.  From other dicussions I tried removing 3ivvxVideoCodec.componenet from Quiktime Library and retarted with no success, so iI restored the file.

    You are welcome;
there is another problem with videos, that might apply in your your case, when you reimport the videos, after you deinstalled the codec - the location you are importing from, and the permission settings, see this post:
