Viewing the version of the X11.app in /Applications/Utilities says I have X11 2.3.4 (which is required for the newest version of Inkscape). What's wrong?

You can buy the components of the iWork suite of software individually (Pages / Keynote / Numbers) from the App Store for Snow Leopard v10.6.8
Minimum requirements:  Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later

  • Can iCloud be used with snow leopard on a Mac if you have an ipad2?

Can iCloud be used with a Mac that has been upgraded to it's full capacity with snow leopard if you are using it with an ipad2 and iPhone 4 ( with upgraded system)?

If you have joined iCloud on your iPad, this will be the situation on your Snow Leopard Mac:
You will be able to access email, calendar and contacts on the iCloud website at http://icloud.com provided your browser is reasonably up-to-date.
You will not be able to sync contacts or bookmarks from a pre-Lion Mac.
You will be able to enter the server settings for email manually in the Mail application and access your email. A pictorial instruction page on doing this is here.
You will not be able to sync your calendars directly.
Some people have been able to set up calendar syncing by using the method detailed here - this is an unsupported hack and may not be reliable, and may stop working at some future point. BusyCal is an iCal-like calendar application with extra facilities: it can sync with the iCloud Calendar while running on Leopard, Snow Leopard or Lion.
There appears to be no method of syncing contacts (though Address Book on a Mac can be synced with Google or Yahoo address books - I don't know how reliable this is)

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
The Personal Hotspot feature using USB  should be as simple as connecting the device to your Mac via the USB cable when Hotspot is enabled.  Here is some more information regarding this feature and an article that will provide some troubleshooting steps if you are experiencing an issue.

  • Can't open Aperture after Snow Leopard to Mavericks upgrade.

Upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard. Now, the Aperture icon in the dock is greyed out. When I try to open it I get the message that I have Aperture 3.2.4 and it can't be opened with Mavericks. I purchased Aperture from the App Store when I had Snow Leopard and it shows in my purchases list, but when I check for available updates nothing shows. I have US English in my preferences, and Aperture is in my Applications file. I tried to update Aperture with 3.4.4 as an interim step from the Apple website, but got the message that I had to update from the App Store.
    Any help appreciated.
    Russ

Could there be anything interfering with the App Store connecting to Apple's servers? Firewall, antivirus filters? Any problems with your AppleID? Credit card expired, the answers to your security questions too short, an too simple password?
In some cases it will help, to boot into Safe Mode before connecting to the AppStore. Try to load the updates page while booted into Safe mode, see:  Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode

Clean and polish the bottom of the 10.6 disk with a clean cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol.
Stick it in and reboot the machine holding the c (or option) key down and boot from the disk.
Second screen in under the Utilites menu is Reset Password.
If you did this and it doesn't work, you can try this method from Single User mode.
At the chime (or grey screen if your chime is turned off), hold down ⌘ and S on your keyboard to enter single-user mode.
The next step is optional, but it’s a good idea because it checks the consistency of the hard disk before moving on. At the localhost:/ root# prompt, type
    fsck -fy
and press Return. Wait for the checks to complete before going to the next step. This is a simple check for file system integrity and is optional. It may take a few minutes to complete. Be patient. If you get concerned that it has stalled press the Return key. When the integrity check completes pressing the Return key will result in the localhost prompt again.
    Type
    mount -uw /
and press Return. There is a single space before and after -uw
All on the same line, type
    launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist
and press Return. There is a single space before and after the word load.
    Type
    ls /Users
and press Return. There is a single space following ls.
This lists all of the usernames on the computer, which is helpful if you don’t know or remember what the user names are.
All on the same line, type
    dscl . -passwd /Users/username password
but replace “username” with one of the users displayed in the previous step. Replace "password" with a new password of your choice. There is a single space before and after the . (dot) character that follows dscl and a single space following -passwd. Press Return.
    Type reboot and press Return.
If your not able to c boot, but can option key boot, the you likely have a Firmware Password enabled, not knowing this your basically screwed.

  • Cannot open OnLocation with Snow Leopard

hi, i have the cs4 master collection and i tried to use onlocation. I am on a late 2008 15 inch macbook pro. The program starts bouncing on the dock but then it doesnt load or anything. Then it stops and closes itself. No error messages, no loading windows, no nothing. What can i do?

I'm having the same problem. MacBookPro, OS X 10.6.2.
I am able to launch if I go to Terminal, and open the executable file inside the .app package directly, e.g. type:
    /Applications/Adobe\ OnLocation\ CS4/Adobe\ OnLocation\ CS4.app/Contents/MacOS/Adobe\ OnLocation
A bunch of what look to be debugging messages print out in the Terminal window as you operate the app. But it seems to work.
I guess this will be my workaround for the time being.
    Update: 01/04/10
There has been an OL update or two but these don't seem to address this issue, whatever it is. I've created an alias to the executable in the MacOS subfolder, and just use that to launch.

  • Can icloud be used with snow leopard

I didn't see this referenced here on the community board, so I'm assuming I have to upgrade to OSX Lion before icloud will work. Is this true?

    I'm afraid it is.

  • Can I work with .docx files with snow leopard?

I'm told if I use windows, I can fill out .docx files after I down-load them, rather than printing them out, filling them out by hand, then scanning/attach to an e-mail or 'fax' them. Can I do this with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 ?

Yes.  http://www.openoffice.org/ will open and edit DOCX files.  Use Windows Attachments when clicking on the paperclip attachment in composing messages to attach the DOCX file.    The paperclip icon will appear if you use View menu -> Customize toolbar to add it there, if it was not there already.

  • How can I get rid of Snow Leopard?

When Lion was released I installed it in it's own partition on the HD of my Macbook Pro. I can change between starting with Snow Leopard or Lion by choosing either " start up with Mac OS X 10.6.8 on Mackintosh HD" or Mac OS 10.7.1 on Lion.
I am now happy enough to use Lion full time but I cannot seem to manipulate the partitions in any way.  Do I need to re-install Lion on the HD over Snow Leopard? Will that get rid of the existing Lion partition?
    Many thanks

    Ok, this is what happened
1: You had Snow Leopard already installed which takes the first (and fastest) part of the hard drive
2: You added another partition, formatted it HFS and installed Lion into it, likely there was no Recovery Partition installed when this occurred, Lion takes the second half of the hard drive which is slower.
Now you want to get rid of the Snow Leopard partition and merge the two partitions together, unfortunately this is not going to occur with Disk Utility or even renaming Snow Leopard "BOOTCAMP" changing it's format to MSDOS and using Bootcamp to merge the two partitions.
Also you need to address having the Lion Recovery Partition installed and moving Lion to the front part of the drive and utilizing all the space on the drive again.
What your going to have to do is Carbon Copy Cloner both Lion and Snow each to their own blank HFS formatted external drives and disconnect.
Hold c and reboot off the Snow Leopard install disks, erase the entire boot drive (select the makers name) and format HFS, install Snow, go through the setup (don't transfer files or install programs yet) Software update to 10.6.8, use the AppStore to option click on Purchases and redownload the Lion installer and install. This will restore your Lion Recovery Partition. (if you use the Lion boot DVDs on a blank drive, it will install the Lion Recovery Partition too, just not when you install into a partition like you did before)
Once your fine on that, hold option and boot from the Lion Clone and clone that to your Lion partition and you'll be set.
Carbon Copy Cloning defragments and optimizes on the fly by writing the files and folders according to their alphabetical order in the root directory, thus Applications is first and Users is last (Users being the most subject to change). As drives are fastest at the very front and slower as you work inwards, Applications and System will be faster (as they are smaller than Users) and Users files loading and write speeds will depend upon how much there is, which a person can easily control. As a result the boot drive stays optimized longer.
For more performance tips read my guide

The Snow Clone is a extra bootable backup and in case you decide to clone that to a second partition later.

Microsoft Office 2004 (Word) unable to save files
I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2004-macword/word-2004-wil l-not-open-or-save-documents/b04eb870-9b0d-4f3b-bb47-b122301e36f6
So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
How can I get rid of this error message?

Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
    Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
    #2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk  of your internal drive  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
    #3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

    That's it really.

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.2 CS4 InDesign can't open files with a "#" in file path

Snow Leopard 10.6.2 CS4 InDesign can't open files with a "#" in file path using any of these perfectly normal methods:
    1. double-click file in the Finder (e.g in a Folder on your Mac or on your Mac desktop etc.)
    2. select file and choose "File... Open" command-o in the Finder
    3. drag file to the application icon in the Finder.
    4. Select file in Bridge and double-click, choose File.. Open.. or Drag icon to InDesign icon in dock.
If you try to open an ID file named with a "#", you will get an error message "Missing required parameter 'from' for event 'open.'"
This happens to any InDesign file that has a "#" (pound sign, number sign, or hash) in the filename or in the file path (any parent folder).
    To reproduce
Name an InDesign file Test#.idd Try to open it in the Finder or Bridge (as opposed to the "Open" dilaog of InDeisng itself).
    "Solution"
The file WILL open using File... Open... command-o while in InDesign application.
Rename the file or folders that have a "#" (shift-3) in the filename.
Report to Adobe if it bugs you.
This does not occur in "plain" Leopard 10.5 nor Tiger 10.4
Untested in Panther or before and
Untested with CS3 and earlier in Snow Leaopard.
Anyone have those and want to try this... ?

In case this really bothers you: we've added a workaround for this into Soxy. If you enable the option, these documents will open fine on double-click.
    You need Soxy 1.0.7 from:
    http://www.rorohiko.com/soxy
Go to the 'Soxy' - 'Preferences' - 'Other' dialog window, and enable 'Open InDesign via Script'
(Irrelevant background info (it's all invisible to the user): the workaround works by special-casing how Soxy opens documents in InDesign: instead of using AppleScript, Soxy will use ExtendScript to instruct InDesign to open the document - which works fine).

Try repairing permissions. My favorite way is with a utility called AppleJack. Info and download here. It's free. It only works when you boot in Single User Mode. When restarting or booting, hold down the Command key and S keys.
You will get a very different startup screen that looks like the Terminal app has hijacked the screen. Just let the lines of text scroll by. When that happens you will get a text entry prompt. Type in "AppleJack" without the quotation marks.
A DOS looking menu will appear. Choose 1 or d to run Disk Repair. If you get a message that Disk Repair found and corrected errors, run it again. Repeat until you get the "your disk appears to be ok" message. This rarely happens with my experience, though. This does the same thing as as booting from an external drive and running Disk Utility's repair. Only, no external drive is required!
Next, choose 2 or p to repair disk permissions. This will take a little while. AppleJack warns that it will take up to an half hour to run repair permissions. It'n never taken more than about ten minutes for my MacBook Pro.
As permissions are repaired, you will see each repair scroll on the screen. When done, the menu returns, choose q to quit. Then at the prompt, enter "exit" without the quotes. Your MacBook Pro should restart into Mac OS normally after this.
    Hope this helps.

Mac OS X Lion has dropped support for Rosetta, the feature that allowed you to run PowerPC apps on previous OS X systems. Check if you can find a newer version of the app you are trying to run that supports Intel processors.
What application are you trying to run? Maybe I can help you find a version that runs on Lion.
