Can't Open iPhoto Library in CS3 Ext or through Bridge

Does anyone know who to open photos stored in the iPhoto Library without having to first save them to the desktop or some other folder?

Thanks -macman & Nani, I was hoping for a better solution. Yes I can export all my photos, but that defeats the purpose of using iPhoto to organize them. And yes I can find the originals with show in finder, but it's a bit tedious. I think

Can't open iPhoto library after upgrade

I upgraded iphoto after install OSX Mavericks recently but I can't open iphoto library with the newer version.
(It says "Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete.") So I want to know if I select to upgrade, my photos will be lost or not. Do I need to back up before?

Of course you need to back up first. You should always have a back up before you upgrade or update anything.
Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store
Then click upgrade.

Downgraded OS from Mavericks and now can't open iPhoto library.

Updated to Mavericks which made my machine unusable. Consequently reinstalled 10.8.5, and now I can't open iPhoto Library without updating to Mavericks again and installing latest version of iPhoto. Any ideas how to make my iPhoto library compatible with iPhoto 7.1.5?

If it were me, I would be addressing why Mavericks did not seem to work.
Your machine easliy meets the minimum system requirements to run Mavericks and simply buying more RAM is not a valid fix for your reported issue.
If you are really determined to stay on Mountain Lion but now have an incompatible iPhoto library you could try a workaround -
- Right click on the iPhoto Library, choose Show package contents, look for a "Masters" folder. All your original pics are located within this folder.
- Hold down the alt key, whilst doing this, click the iPhoto icon on your dock and choose to create new to create a new "empty" iPhoto library
- Go back to your Masters Folder and Drag individual folders accross into the already open iPhoto to import them. Each folder you drag in will be treated as an "event"
Having said all this, I would really be trying to upgrade to Mavericks again first before trying a "messy" workaround.
Why not let us know what happened after you upgraded before trying this?

Can't open iphoto library from external hard drive

I'm backing up my enormous iPhoto library to two external hard drives in order to free up space on my computer. Before deleting the photos permanently from the laptop, I wanted to double-check that the copies of the library I made on the two externals would actually work on another computer, should something happen to my laptop. When I plug my external hard drive into my laptop and use option+click on iPhoto to choose which library I want to use, it opens up the library from the external just fine, no problems. However, when I plug the same external into a different Mac computer and do the same process, I get the immensely frustrating message of "You can't open photo library blah blah blah changes have been made using newer version of iPhoto". However, both my laptop and the second computer are running the exact same version of iPhoto (the most recent), so that can't (or at least shouldn't) be the problem. I found suggestions to rebuild the library, which I did, but the same result occurs. I double-checked to be sure that neither computer needed updates (they didn't).
When I plug one of the externals into the second computer, though, I can open up the package contents of iPhoto library and all the photos are visible, so I know the information is all there. But I don't want to lose my albums, etc.
So do I just delete the copies of my library from the externals and try it all over again? I'd prefer not to, since I have 40,000+ photos, and that takes a while.

To reinforce what Larry pointed out both Macs must be running the same version of iPhoto. And the external HD must be formatted as shown in this screenshot:

Can't Open iPhoto Library

My iPhoto library is on a FW drive (too big for laptop drive). I've been able to open it before and have used it many times, but now I can't access it. Sometimes I've opened iPhoto without the FW drive attached, so created a library on my local drive, but when I opened iPhoto holding down the Option key, I was able to choose my normal library.
Not any more.
I can open the "iPhoto Library" package in Finder and see all of the photos, but when I try to point iPhoto to it, it won't open. It won't accept it as input in the dialogue box. I hit the "Open" button, but it doesn't do anything.
How can I get iPhoto to open this library? I'm using iPhoto 7.1.1 on Leopard 10.5.1.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
I'm afraid it sounds like the library file has been damaged.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums back.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
- What version of iPhoto. (You'd be surprised what some folks call the "latest version")
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
- History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
- Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

How can i open iPhoto Library on Time Machine after full Backup?

After i had a full backup to iomega external hard drive i wonted to see photos in iPhoto library by using Time Machine. I can see the iPhoto Library icon on
Time Machine, but when i click on an icon it does not open the folder and i can't see the pictures stored on iomega external hard drive. All other backed up

Can't Open iPhoto Library on External Hard Drive

Hi, please help!
I currently have 2 iPhoto libraries. 1 is on my external hard drive- and isn't recognized by iPhoto anymore. And the other is a newer one, on my internal hard drive.
Here's what I did:
I copied my entire iPhoto library to my external hard drive (it is a Seagate, Mac OS extended drive) a few months ago, and I went ahead and deleted my iPhoto library on my internal hard drive. Then I started importing new photos from my camera, and a new iphoto library was created automatically on my internal hard drive.
I tried to access photos from my old library yesterday by plugging my external hard drive in, and by hitting the "option" key when opening iphoto. Unfortunately, when I search for the library on my external HD, the only items that appear are music. None of my loose photos or my iphoto library are recognized by iPhoto.
Anyone have a fix for this? iPhoto doesn't recognize that any jpgs/photos are on my hard drive, but when I go through finder- I can see my library, as well as many other jpgs stored on my hard drive.

Sounds like iPhoto is not seeing a valid database there.
Try these in order - from best option on down...

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.

Can't open iPhoto library after hard drive crash

My daughter's MacBook hard drive crashed rather catastrophically. I managed to clone the damaged drive to an external drive before it died completely. On the clone, her iPhoto library appears intact, but when I double click on it, and click the options to update the photos and thumbnails for the current version of iPhoto (I think she was using '08, and I'm on '09) I'm left with an empty iPhoto. When I open the package contents of the iPhoto Library, I can see the original files, but can't get them to open, even in Photoshop.
Any ideas out there? I have an older version of her Library on backup, but it's the more recent photos she's desperate to get back.

The 'Originals' are all around 3 - 3.6 megs each.
Well that sounds like at least there is data there. Try download a trial of Graphic Coverter . I've seen that open some hopeless cases.

Can't open iPhoto Library / Reorganize WITHOUT iPhoto

I have about 6000 photos, (now backed up onto my 160Gb HD)--about 3500 in iPhoto (which makes it run so slow I cannot use it) and the balance in labelled folders in my Pictures folder.
I am finding it increasingly difficult to keep track of my pics using iPhoto, I recently tried to start a new iPhoto library to break it into two smaller libraries and now I cannot access the original photos except manually on the desktop even after reading Help. So now I do not trust iPhoto and do not want to buy the new version.
I want to move all of the iPhoto images to new “holding tank” folders so I can then manually review and move them to appropriately labelled folders.
Can I use Automator to find all the image files in the iPhoto library folder and move them to one or more new folders? (I need the exact workflow. I have tried using Automator to resize images, with limited success. The items never seem to end up in the place I want them to be). Any other ideas would be welcome.

Shoot! I found part of the answer in the Automator forum (sorry) where they said NOT to use Automator with iPhoto. But I still want to know if anyone else has had this problem.
I did already move and delete some iPhoto library files (today) in my iPhoto Library in an attempt to combine the two libraries. When I realized the length of time it was going to take, I stopped. But the library not opening problem occurred over a month ago when I originally tried to start a new iPhoto Library and BEFORE I moved any files.
Any other ideas?

Can't open iPhoto Library after 7.1.5 update

Hello.
I accidently updated my system while my iPhoto library was in a different folder. Now iphoto doesnt recognize it as my library, even though it still has the standard iPhoto library icon. I have iPhoto choose my library file, which is 900 mb, but it says it has zero photos!
I tried d/l'ing 7.1.4, but when I run the .pkg, it says a newer version of the software is installed, then quits. No duh!

First, to make sure you're opening the correct library launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when asked, select Choose Library, navigate to your library, select and open it and then close.
Make a temporary backup copy of the library and run the three fixes below in order as needed:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all options.
2 - rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos.
3 - start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

Can't open iPhoto library on External HD

Saved photo library on iMac (iPhoto '08 version 7.1.5) to external HD (Mac OS Extended - journaled), it shows 50GB of photos saved, which is the correct size.
connected ext HD to MacBook Pro (Mavericks) running iPhoto 9.5.1.
Opened iPhoto while holding option key and switched from default library (on MBP) to library on external HD.
iPhoto opens new library but there are no photos only a yellow sticky note that asks to either connect a camera, drag files or import photos.
Used iPhoto Library Upgrader to update iPhoto '08 library but note said the library (on the external HD) did not need updating.
Any suggestions?

I dragged the iPhoto library from the Pictures folder to a WD EHD.
The iPhoto library from the iMac is backed up with Time Michine on a Lacie EHD. How do I rebuild the database on the WD EHD? When I open iPhoto while holding the option and commansd keys it opens the library on the iMac. It took 18 hours to move the library to the EHD and I would rather not have to do that again. I would rather rebuild the library on the EHD.

Can't open iPhoto library in mountain lion

Hi all,
I just did a clean install of Mountain Lion on my iMac.
I used migration assistant to restore my account from a Time Machine - I restored my photos, but not the Applications folder (had a lot of old apps I wanted to purge) and not the computer settings.
I re-intsalled iLife 11 from the DVD. I ran software update.
Now when I start iPhoto I get a message saying 'You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto - you have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto'
How annoying - has anyone seen this before?

Problem solved - iPhoto wasn't updated when I ran Software Update...a bunch of other iLife stuff was, but not iPhoto. I read about issues with App Store under ML, so I changed to an Admin account and looked for updates again...this time there was a combined update including iPhoto of about 1GB...ran this, iPhoto was revved to 9.3.2, and all worked fine.

New internal hard drive (URGH!) and can't open iPhoto library on my ex HD

I just had to replace my first HD since buying my first Mac in 1989 so I'm starting fresh again. I have about 12 GB of photos on my backup external hard drive. I want to view them and see that they work and try to figure out if I lost any photos in my crash. My ex HD photos were stored in iPhoto 5 and I now have iPhoto 6 on my computer. I had MAJOR troubles with version 5 and I do not want to import the photos back into my computer, I want to be able to view them and work on them from my ex HD.
I have no photos on my computer's HD at this time. I cannot get my photos on my ex HD to open. When I hold down the option key while opening iPhoto, I get no prompter to allow me to select my storage photos. What am I doing wrong?
PS - I've gone into Preferences>Advanced and unselected the import photos function. Is there a way to override that for portions of my huge library on my ex HD?

Since I last posted I downloaded about 900 new photos into my computer's iPhoto program. I've been busy organizing them and didn't try opening my photos on my external HD again until tonight.
The first thing I did was transfer my new photos to the HD. I renamed the folder for the original 12 GB library on the ex HD and I gave the new photo folder another name. After that I held down the option key while opening iPhoto and I got the prompter to pick a library! Yippee! I opened my huge old library. I had to upgrade them to work on iPhoto 6, so it took some time for it to get processed. I can now see all those old photos again.
I was stuck not being able to get the prompter back again to let me see my new photos, but I just figured it out! I was holding down on the icon in my dock to open the program, which brought up the menu to Open, Show in Finder, etc. Holding down the option key did nothing. I tried holding it before I selected the iPhoto icon or after and nothing changed. What I just discovered is that I have to hold down option and then DOUBLE CLICK on the iPhoto icon and it works. Then it asks me what library I want to open.
Jeez, I think that's all I've been doing wrong all along. If not, I'll be back. Otherwise, thanks for your help.
