Can't open iPhoto on Time Machine from within iPhoto

I have all my iPhoto (iLife 11) libraries backed up to Time Capsule. When I enter Time Machine to restore any other item (for example a Word document) it works fine. But when I try to restore an iPhoto library I get the message that I don't have permission to restore an iPhoto file. I've repaired all permissions through Disk Utility and checked all the file permissions through 'Get Info'.
I saw others were experiencing difficultions and they suggested opening Time Machine through iPhoto. This works well for Address Book. But when I open iPhoto and then open Time Machine the desktop is selected instead and I have to go through the Desk top on the Time Capsule to find the User-Pictures- correct Library. I then can't restore either a library or a single picture because of the permissions issue. I notice that when I select the iPhoto library in Time Machine and then select 'Open with iPhoto' it doesn't.
I've tried using a second external hard drive as the Time Capsule but the same thing happens.
I'm running a PowerMac 2x2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with Lion.
Any ideas?

That's curious.  Shouldn't matter, though.
but I got there) but every time I got as far as 'restore to folder' - and selected the disk image in the Finder sidebar I got a message that the disk was too small. I increased the size of the disk from 100 MB to 500 MB to 639 (CD size) (following your instructions each time) and still got the message even though the selected library was only 805.8 MB. And that's my smallest library!!!
You need to select something larger than 806 MB.
I also tried the suggestion to 'reset the password and/or user permission' but neither 'CMD and R' keys nor the Alt/Option key brought up the Recovery HD.
That option won't help with existing backups -- only the current contents of your user home folder, and subsequent backups.
Are you using a wired keyboard?  If not, that might be the problem -- sometimes a wireless keyboard isn't recongnized quickly enough during the startup sequence.
A Recovery HD is fairly important to have.  Do you recall when you installed Lion if you got a message about it not being created?
You can verify whether you have one, via Disk Utility.  First, enable Debug Mode:
Open the Terminal app (in your Applications/Utilities folder). Be very careful with this app.  It's a direct link into UNIX, the underpinnings of OSX, but without the protections of OSX.
In Terminal, the prompt looks like this:  <Computer Name>:~ <your name>$
(where <your name> is your short user name).  It's followed by a non-blinking block cursor.
Copy the following after the prompt: defaults write com.apple.diskutility DUDebugMenuEnabled 1
Then press Return.  (You can disable it later by running it again, with a zero instead of the 1.)
Then start Disk Utility and select Debug > Show Every Partition.
That should show a Recovery HD, grayed-out, under your internal HD:

Your help is appreciated gang.: )

Please describe exactly what you did. In moving to a new machine no importing is involved. The best way is to simply connect the two computers together and drag the iPhoto library from the old one to the pictures folder go the new one and launch iPhoto

Time machine is not working under "Applications". I get this message: You can’t open the application “Time Machine” because it may be damaged or incomplete. What do I do?
Time machine under system preferences lets me setup time capsule. But backup fails because "Volume is in use" Help please!

It does sound like you have a corrupted install.
The volume in use error is something we see all the time.

I would run a disk verify on your local OS disk. A5 in the above reference has some info.

  • Can't open apps in Time Machine

In June we had a great electrical storm, and my i.Mac fried. Lucky for me the Maxtor external drive was OK, so I was able to get a total backup on to my replacement iMac and I lost not one thing.(three cheers for "Time Machine").
So I then reformatted the Maxtor and hooked it up to the new iMac and turned on "Time Machine." Everything seemed to be working just fine until just recently I tried to open my Reunion genealogy program and all Time Machine would bring up was my desktop. Even when I tried to open it through Time Machine, applications, Reunion..still cant open it.
On investigation I have the same block on iTunes and iCal.(all I get is the desktop) while apps like address book and iphoto are in Time Machine just fine.......what is going on ?
Should I reformat the external drive and start again ?

I apologize for stressing the point, but, again, can I ask why you're trying to go through Time Machine to get to your Reunion files? From your first post, it sounded as though you recovered everything from your backup (presumably you used the "Recover from TM backup" option when you installed the new hard drive?)
Does Reunion run normally when you launch it from your Applications folder (forgetting about Time Machine for a minute)? If so, do you have your current Reunion data somewhere in your Documents folder (or wherever you stored it before?) If not, and you believe you still have Reunion files in your backups, you should quit Reunion itself, then go into the Finder, go to the Time Machine interface, and locate your data file. Not the Reunion application, the family data file. Then recover that from the backup.
Again, the reason you're seeing what you're seeing through Time Machine is that TM is not "aware" of most applications (ie, you can't just launch any app, go to TM and expect that app's data to appear in the interface). It works for Mail, Address Book, iPhoto and the Finder. It's the Finder you're experiencing when you're going back in Time Machine, not Reunion itself. You just happen to be looking at the Reunion icon when you do so.

  • Can I back up to Time Machine from hard drive of failed Macbook?

My Macbook has just completely failed (I think an issue with power supply).
I had a bulging battery and have a new Macbook Pro on the way, but as I live in a very remote area this is taking a while. So, one day, my Macbook just wouldn't start again.
I hadn't backed up to Time Machine for about a week and would really like to get all the missing data. When the new computer arrives I'm planning to use Migration Assistant to migrate all my data from Time Machine.
So, my question is, is it possible to back up to Time Machine from the hard drive of my dead Macbook? I was thinking either cloning it somehow, or making a disk image and booting it from another Macbook, but this is stretching the limits of my limited IT skills. I don't want to interfere with the other Macbook I'm using or inadvertently wipe the data on the hard drive or Time Machine disk.
    Any advice much appreciated!
My Macbook ran Snow Leopard and was up to date with software updates as of two days ago. It was purchased about two years ago, but I think it's manufacture date was about March 2008.

    Thanks Noondaywitch and Pondini!
The HD of the failed Macbook turned out to be fine. Just to be safe I did a full functional back-up of my Time Machine disk to another external disk as well as cloning my Macbook hard drive using Carbon Cloner to another partition of the external disk.
I then booted from a friend's Macbook and did an incremental Time Machine backup from the original Macbook HD to the original TM backup (making sure I excluded the host computer's hard drive from the backup!); when I did the backup it asked whether I wanted to "Reuse backup" I clicked yes.
As said, the hard drive was fine, but at setup I needed an ethernet or firewire connection, which I didn't have on the enclosure, so I migrated my data to the new Macbook Pro using the original TM backup. Strangely, the backup said it was transferring only 120GB, whereas the HD had 150GB of used space. Redundant files, etc. perhaps? Anyway, it's just transferring now, so will sit back and read the paper and see what it looks like in an hour and a half!
    Thanks very much again!
Now, if anyone's got any suggestions to fix my old Macbook, which I was going to give away to impecunious friends if they bought a new battery……
HD is fine, power seems buggered, the rest, I don't know. Suggestions welcomed (I live 300+kms from the nearest service centre, so it's strictly DIY or go to local computer shop who know nothing about Macs).

  • Why can I no longer play movie files from within iPhoto '08

After uploading all my stills and movie files from by digital camera to iphoto '08, I used to be able to click and play a movie file from within iphoto. The frame and duration still appear but no response. Have I inadvertantly switched something off or has the funtionality changed as a result of my upgrading the OS.

Make sure you have the Quicktime Player 7 installed.  It was an option when installing Lion.  Or you can get it here: QuickTime Player 7 for Mac OS X v10.6.3 or later.  Install it, reboot and try again.

  • HELP Backup didn't work. Can't open folder in Time Machine

I backed up my macbook pro before I sent it in for repair. Less than a month later I had to do the same for my wife's macbook pro. I backed it up the exact same way that I did mine, using a usb connection to a 2 TB hard drive that was already set up as a Time Machine drive (half time machine/half file sharing). When I got my computer back, no problem. Numerous backups that I had done were all there, ready to be harvested. My wife's backup is a totally different story. Her computer was replaced for a new one. I got it home and tried to use the Time Machine backup when I first booted up the new Pro. But the folder labeled "Wife's Macbook Pro" is lokced and will not open. The error messege says something to the effect: "This folder is locked. Contact your network adiminstrator". I am completely lost now and really don't want to have to deal with the wrath of my wife if I don't have to. Any help is much appreciated!

When I'm viewing a document in Time Machine and I'd like to open it, I can't do so. I can use Quicklook on a .txt file, for instance, and in the top-right corner it says "Open with Textmate" (because I'm using Textmate to read .txt files), but clicking it does nothing. How can I fix this?

  • HT201250 How do I view individual photos in iPhoto on Time Machine?

I go in to Time Machine, then Pictures and iPhoto Library but cannot open any further - is this where they should be for me to open the whole library as I can't open it?

Time Machine can't restore individual pictures on iPhoto. If you want to restore a photo from the Time Machine backup, you have to restore the whole library and you will lose recent changes.
A workaround would be to access to your Time Machine drive manually and restore the iPhoto library from the backup you want to a folder. Open a Finder window, choose your Time Machine drive in the sidebar and go to Backups.backupdb > yourcomputername > backupdate (being the date when the backup was created) > Macintosh HD (or the disk name you selected) > Users > youruserfolder > Pictures, and copy the iPhoto library to another folder. Open the old library, extract the photos and copy them to your current iPhoto library.
If you just wanted to view individual photos from an iPhoto backup you have in Time Machine, you just have to restore the iPhoto library to another folder (in case you don't want to lose your current iPhoto library)

  • Just migrated using time machine from MacBook Pro to older Macbook. iPhoto 9.4.3 won't open. Tried reinstall - no change.

Just migrated using time machine from MacBook Pro to older Macbook. iPhoto 9.4.3 won't open. Tried reinstall - no change. (Mac OS X 10.7.5)

Did you migrate the app from Time Machine? Reinstall it.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
The reference to NovaMedia is that there is the remanant of an older app in there somewhere that won't run on 10.7

File sharing can be accomplished many ways,.

It is as simple as copying/saving from one computer/drive to another computer/drive.

You might post this query on the iPhoto forum and perhaps someone there can provide an answer.
I tried this on my MBP and it seems that you have to restore the entire iPhoto Library.  What I did was put the current library in a separate folder on the desktop and then I restored the library from a prior date.  If you were to do that, you then could extract the desired photos and then delete the restored library.  Then place the current library back to the original location and import the desired photos.
Not tidy but it seems it will work.
    Ciao.

  • IMac 20-inch on OSX 10.7.4 running iphoto 11, my photos from my iphoto library have been deleted. I have time machine but the iphoto library file is missing when I access time machine, help please.

I have an imac 20-inch Late 2006 model on OSX 10.7.4 running iphoto 11, somehow the application ccleaner has deleted my photos from my iphoto library. I have time machine but the iphoto library file is missing when I access time machine.
To restore photos I have followed the steps below
    Quit iPhoto.
    Connect your Time Machine drive.
In the Finder, open the folder containing your iPhoto Library. Unless you've moved your iPhoto Library, it can be found in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library.
Enter Time Machine.  (Time Machine can be found in the Dock or in the /Applications folder.)
Choose your desired backup. The timeline on the right side of the screen displays a purple tick mark for each of the backups stored on your Time Machine drive.
Select the iPhoto library you would like to restore, and click the Restore button.
I dont get the option in step 6 as I dont have an iphoto library file to choose? Does anyone know why?

    Hi Barry
Thanks but as mentioned all is intact, even at step 3 I can see the current library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library which has no photos, but when I access time machine any point before the NOW option the iphoto library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library is missing from the finder window.
As you can see here it is
and now its gone. I have no explanantion.
How do I go about moving this question as you suggested.

  • Retrieving pictures off of my hard drive (Time machine) from Iphoto

I apologize if this issue has ben addressed, but I searched and havent seen this same question. Now, I have been using time machine with my LaCie to back up my Macbook. One of my main reasons is to back up 9,000+ pictures that I have on here. Now, i want to make sure they are on my hard drive before I start to delete them for more room, but I cant seem to access them on my hard drive through time machine or any other way. When I click on Iphoto just the application icon enlarges, and thats about it. I tried to go through pictures, and nothing!
Id greatly appreciate any help anyone can give me!
Happy 4t of July by the way!! :o)

Several questions there and here are some answers:
I figured out by searching for a specific pic I found it in the Data file under iphoto library.
Then my guess is right. That's the thumbnail. The full sized pic is kept in the /Originals folder.
Maybe my real question is how do I access the files once its on my External hard drive?!
Doesn't make a difference which drive the files are on. Here are some of the ways you can access your files with iPhoto
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto. With 10.5 you can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
