Can't open library on external HD

I was trying to import from a card reader and was getting the message that a location for import files was not specified, or something to that effect.  I restarted the computer( MBP 2010) .  When everything was up and running, same results.  I then tried to deleting  preferences.  When the MBP restarted, the libraries were not open.  When I tried to open the libraries which are on an external HD, I get the message that is pasted below.  I can open libraries on the second HD inside my MBP though.  Any idea what has happened.

Some more info about my problem.
This morning mounted the external HD with 2 libraries on it.  By double clicking on one it opened FVPX and I was able to download clips form the are reader.
I then tried to open the second library from File>open library>choose.  That worked.
I then ejected the card reader and put a card in form a different camera and when I said to import selected I got the message below.
Also last night after I posted my question I tried to open the libraries form my back up drive and that worked as I expected it to, no problem.

Thanks again. The option thing got me further than I've gotten thus far but when I went to choose a library I got that same message.
I do have options. I have 2 iMacs. I can still access my music through 'sharing' and download it onto my newer iMac. Trouble is it doesn't have a CD port and I like to burn. From what I've read about their new Mac portable CD/DVD drive, it's shaky at best. Incidentally, do you know of any drives that work well with Macs and cost less than $89.00?
I've figured out I can download a previous library from my old Mac then upload it from the new one which should put me back in business, but what do I do with the corrupt one that's there now, just trash it? Also, when I do the option key my other choice is Create A New Library. Should I do that and put the good previous library into it?
Thanks a million, I really appreciate your time. I'm an old fogey and computers often mystify me, especially when they lock me out of things for no apparent reason.

  • Can't import library from External drive to new compueter.

I guess this could be more of a Windows 8 issue but maybe someone knows what I can do.  My old 2006 Macbook died and I just got a new Windows 8 laptop.  I had my iTunes library on an external drive (formatted in NTFS) because the Macbook had a tiny hard drive.  Anyway, this new laptop has big enough HD that I can copy my library directly to it.  The problem is, I can't...  I opened up two Windows Explorers, one with my old library, and another with the location of the new library.  It should let me just copy the contents from one folder to the other but for some reason it just won't.  I select all the files/folders, drag them over to the new location, and nothing happens.  I tried to copy/paste, both with the right-click menu, as well as keyboard shortcuts, and again nothing.  Not even an error message.  Why won't Windows let me copy the files?  Should I just open up iTunes and drag the files over that way or will that screw things up?  Please help!
    PS.  I'm using Windows 8 64-bit and iTunes 11.1.1.11

If this was used with your MacBook, Macs cannot write to NTFS drives.
So what was on the external drive? WHat do you mean by "library"? Which folders?
    Copy the entire /iTunes/ folder.
Why won't Windows let me copy the files?
    Dunno.
    It's not an iTunes issue.

  • Can't open file on external hard drive?

    Hi,
I'm using an external hard drive for mac backup and also to store photo files.  I copied some photo files to the drive about two weeks ago and their icon appears, but when I want to open them, I get an error message: "The alias “...” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found."  There is also a small arrow on the icon.  My other files can be opened okay.
What's also strange is that I found the icon of the external drive in the folder with the picture files, even though I did not drag it there (the main icon is till on my computer's desktop, where it should be.)  That icon also has a small arrow on it.  When I click on it, it opens and I can see my folders, but the photo folders with the arrow on it will still not open.
I tried ejecting the drive and reconnecting it, but it didn't help.  Is there anything I can do to recover the missing photo files, or are they most likely gone?  I have deleted these pictures from my computer hard drive.  What should I do about the mysterious second external drive icon?  Delete it or keep it?  Can I somehow use it to restore the photo files?
    Any help appreciated!  Thanks!

The Hard Drive is a :
Toshiba Canvio® Connect 1TB Portable Hard Drive (Silver)
    Model: HDTC710XS3A1
    This one: http://www.staples.com/office/supplies/StaplesProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=1 0001&krypto=3zEkJ%2BPHCwJUtrlzjGByIaVT405Hn%2BOkggwamseD1O2Y0FHbJ9AUp%2FvPow7k22 XRWnJ6JpaVN8kRgl1%2FsFLgpeXF3MELtwm2GBihw8f7efXGqDPuH1gOcMRylnlmBw9gsk%2BTp1l7y9 CIe9KKQs5NR6dOV3HVJyJoGFWpJuhiI4ebeznLAndHONOpAQH7BG04MKAdFPnSHdRzYEBcRoM%2FVHQM k2PSq4vj%2F684ZdSvLVCllSq4ffM7sqpFRf0VO825mlCiumRBMCpX4RLzBCDAjoVpsvSrfRAuJkk4ZW NwBP3Qfzok8RiYCyj3rmcmGc1iFsFS6dhKjH9xnnhEkb5%2Bag%3D%3D
I copied the photos by dragging and dropping them into the folder on the external drive.  I highlighted them all and dragged them together, then clicked "Arrange by Name", so I would find them.  As the folders were visible, I assumed they were copied correctly, however I'm not sure I actually opened one to make sure.
Other than the photo folder I have the hard drive connected to Time Machine and it automatically backs up files.  I still have about 700MB of space left on the drive.
I used my Mac (disk utility) to format the drive, not the software that came with it, as someone on this forum recommended. Format is: Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  So far, it had been working great.
Just looked at Disk Utility and it's strange, it's as if the Toshiba drive appears twice, with its original name and then the way I renamed it "Mac Backup".  Not sure if that's normal?  When I click on Mac Backup it correctly states how much storage I have left, but it lists over 230,000 folders and over 1.3 million files, which seems way too much, even considering the regular backups.

  • Can't open project on External Harddrive

I'm using iMovie 5.0.2 and working on a project that is saved on an external hard drive.
After 6 hours of editing, the power cord came out of the hard drive. I connected everything and tried to save the project. I then got scared and stopped the saving. Now I can't open the project. I can't save it to another part of the hard drive and open it. Every time I try to open the movie it says :
    A project file is missing.
The file "_" couldn't be opened
and is being skipped. Click Ignore All
to skip any remaining missing file messages.
The iMovie quits. If I can find the files- all won't be lost. Plus, I have a high res quicktime file saved of the raw footage. But, I would like NOT to lose that 6 hours of work.
Can I open this file? Did I mess it up? Where are the video clips saved? I can't find them. I have iMovie on my laptop and the project saved on the hard drive.
Thanks for any help. This is why I'm so done with video Just a few more projects to do. After 15 years this type of crap drives me crazy.
    Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't do anything more with your iMovie. Don't try another save, as that can write over your last good saves. You MAY be able to retrieve the prior save. Hopefully, you saved as you went along during these 6 hours so you can retrieve a very recent saved version.
(These types of accidents have made me realize the importance of backing up my movies-in-progress as I am editing them. I did not do this in the past, and now I try to do it at least at the end of each editing session so that not all would be lost. I had an external drive fail suddenly and all of my movies were gone. Fortunately, I was able to reimport the original footage, but frequent saves would have been best).
In iM6, you can access the project files by control or right-clicking on the star icon and selecting 'show package contents' to let you see the movie files. One or more of the icons will have a tilde ~ or several of them. Those are prior versions of the iMovie, and can be used to get back to a prior save.
In iM5, I think you can just directly open the project files and see the movie files as ~ files with the name as "yourmovie.mov" It might be in a Cache folder and might be called "Timeline Movie.mov." If you don't see anything like a Cache folder, try doing the process for iM6 above. If you see multiple .mov files with ~ and then more ~~ or even ~~~ those are more versions. You may have to try one or more of these to find the latest one possible.
Once you locate the .mov version of your movie, open a new iMovie project and drop in one of the .mov~ movies into it and see if it works. If so, continue editing with this one. This version will be all in one clip, so more editing is a bit more difficult, but not impossible and at least you will have some of your work back.
It's crucial you NOT save the messed-up project right now, for that will destroy the good QuickTime movie, replacing it with a bad "empty" movie.
(Thanks to Karl Peterson for the info re: retrieving prior saved movies).
    Good luck!

  • Can't open image in external editor, can't export images

    Greetings helpful Aperture experts,
I've just finished transferring aperture from one computer to a replacement unit. Except for being slow on my previous g5, it worked flawlessly at every level. However, now that I've xferred, I can't open Aperture images with an external editor, nor can I export the images to my desktop. Any help along these lines will be gigantically appreciated.
    gaylon

Thanks, ok, here is the info step by step:
When I try to pick any raw image, I am not able to export from Aperture. When I go into the finder and select "show master" then I am able to export from aperture. However, it seems that I am not able to export an image full size. I selected export image to full size jpg to my desktop. Nothing happens except that the window that indicates the image is exporting is open and it says estimated time less than a minute. Yet, there is nothing happening. Additionally, before I transferred Aperture over to my new g5, I could right click an image and had the option to open an image with external editor. Now, no such menu item is apparent. An update, the menu box that lets me know that my image is exporting is still open but there has been no progress. It will just sit there forever, or until I force Aperture to quit. Here's another strange goings on: One of my folders of raw images appear to be pixelated and of very poor quality, even when viewing the masters. The images have already been published by the client in their annual report, so I know that what I am seeing on the screen is not reality. Should I just uninstall Aperture and reinstall? Also, what will this do to the thousands of images in my libraries? Thanks so much for your input and help. In no way am I an expert, but I've been successfully using Aperture since it came out. That was on my G5 dual processor mac with pre intel configuration. Now, these strange things are happening with my new replacement G5 with the Intel processors. Thanks again.

  • IPhoto suddenly crashing; reinstalled; now can't open library . 8.1.2

My iPhoto suddenly started to crash upon startup (missing a FaceRecognition library component?) It's been working fine for a couple of years - not sure what changed (a bad update??)
I reinstalled from the original disk that came with my Mac (had to reinstall all the apps - for some reason it wouldn't let me just reinstall iPhoto.)
But now it will start to run, but stops, saying it can't open the photo library (as it was modified by a newer version?) I ran System Update a couple of times, but there are no updates available.
    I'm running iPhoto 8.1.2 on OS 10.6.7.
    What can I do?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • LR2.7 second (new) laptop can't open catalog on external drive

I've installed and updated the same version of LR on a new laptop which I'm still setting up (Windows 7 Pro 64-bit). It sounds like it's ok to have two installs for one user at home, but the second one is still in trial mode so far. I wanted to see how much faster/better the new laptop handles the catalog which is on an external drive. The old laptop is Windows XP SP3 32-bit.
If I connect the external drive to the new laptop and try to open the catalog, it says it can't use the catalog "because it is not writable and cannot be opened.
This could be caused by incorrect permissions or because another Lightroom application is using the catalog...".
I am an Administrator on both machines. I don't see a lock file, and the Windows permissions for System and Administrators allow all (but Special Permissions is unchecked).
There are some photos on the old c: drive that I haven't copied over yet, but that shouldn't make a difference.
And I can still open the catalog on the old laptop.
    What should I do?
    Thanks in advance.

I hear that on Win 7, running as Administrator is not sufficient--you need to make sure that your account "owns" the files or directories that it's trying to access.
Also, with LR not running, check in the directory that the catalogue is in and if there's a file with a ".lock" extension, delete it.

  • Error mssg: can't open library with this version of iphoto

Help please... I have iphoto 09 but I can't open anything. For some reason, I have multiple copies of the library on my desktop. The message says I made changes and can't open with this version. One of the library folders says Library6.iphoto, which makes no sense.
Here is what I have done recently to maybe cause this?
    - I did drag one library out of the trash yesterday (due to paranoia from a previous case of deleting ALL my photos).
-I also deleted photos from my photobooth from within Finder in the "today" section.
I hope this make sense, I am pretty much a newbie still.
Anyway, I can't open any photos. I don't know why, or what's with all the multiples.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

    painterchic
I still have an icon on my desktop that says Library6.itphoto and when I click on it, it opens my iphoto proogram,
This is an element that should be inside an iPhoto Library. I wonder if it belongs inside this one:
When I use the alt/option key and choose library, there is a third library that will not open, with the message saying "cannot open, changes have been made, and to use a newer version".
If not, you can find the location of this Library easily: When you use the alt key to choose Libraries the location of the Library is given to you:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You could try rebuild that Library by downloading iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function.

  • IMovie can't open library

Yet another problem with Yosemite 10.10.1.
A few days ago I created a brand new movie using the brand new iMovie. Today I went to open it and iMovie gives me an "Open Library" dialogue box that asks "Which library would you like to open?" I lists the library that was modified on the day I was making the movie, but when I try to choose the library, it gives me this message:
“__Sync__” couldn’t be removed because you don’t have permission to access it.
To view or change permissions, select the item in the Finder and choose File > Get Info.
I have tried looking for that file all over the place and can't find it. Anybody have any idea what to do with this?

I don't know if you still need an answer, but what helped me (I had the issue with FCPX though) is simply right-clicking the library, "show package contents" and then manually delete the file infamously known as __Sync__.

  • Can't open library

We have multiple libraries for our family all residing on an external HD under each member's folder.   This morning we tried to open one of them and have found that when navigating many of the libraries are grayed out.  We can only access the hard drive on my laptop and one other library on the external.
Why would a library be grayed out?  How can I remedy this situation?
We're using iPhoto 6.0.6 by the way with OS 10.5.8 for what it's worth.
    Thanks in advance.

Here are a couple of fixes that worked for others:
    A:
    Quit iPhoto.
From the Finder menu bar, choose Go > Utilities to access your Utilities folder (or press Shift-Command-U).
In your Utilities folder, open Keychain Access.
Find the "NetServices" entry in your Keychain Access window.
Select the "NetServices" entry and press the delete key.
Reopen iPhoto and attempt to place your order again.
You should be prompted to enter your account information if you deleted the Keychain entry successfully.
After entering your account information, you should be able to complete your order.

This solved my questionRe: Upgrading iPhoto 9.4.3 CD Version to 9.5

Change the language of OS in preferences for any other, reboot your mac, open mac app store and updates would show up. Somehow worked for me and my friends Then you can go back to your orginal language.
