Can´t open links from other applications, "Firefox no responde..."

When I try to do so, I get a pop-up saying firefox doesn´t respond ( In Spanish: "Firefox se está ejecutando, pero no responde. Para abrir una nueva ventana, primero debe cerrar el proceso Firefox existente, o reiniciar su sistema.")
I´ve already reset my profile , but the problem persists.
This is not the only problem I have with Firefox, also it frequently stalls for several seconds and Windows prints "(no responde)" in the window label.
Of course, if I set as default browser IE or Chrome, I don´t have any of this problems (just they aren´t as cool, but at least work :) ).

Hello <!-- XXX you may wish to edit this greeting, and other parts of the response so that it is personalised to the question asked.--> ,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
#*Windows:
#**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
#**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Installing Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.
<b>WARNING:</b>Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your Firefox profile data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u> See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles. <!-- Starting in Firefox 31, the Firefox uninstaller no longer lets you remove user profile data.Ref: Bug 432017 and https://support.mozilla.org/kb/uninstall-firefox-from-your-computer/discuss/5279 [Fx31] Windows uninstaller will no longer offer the option to remove personal data -->
Please report back to say if this helped you!
Thank you.

• Firefox and Thunderbird do not communicate anymore : I can't open links from TB emails ( a href... ) and can't send mail from FF pages (mailto)

Hi there,
Please excuse me if a make a few mistakes, I am French ;)
I come here because firefox and thunderbird are not working together anymore. This is what happens :
- Firefox and Thunderbird are opened
- I click on a link in an email
- A few seconds after that a Firefox windows pops up. The title is : "Close Firefox", the content is : "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system."
Second case :
- Firefox is closed and Thunderbird is open
- I click on a link in an email
- A few seconds after that a Firefox windows pops up as expected. Firefox opens the link as expected but doesn't opens the other tabs as usual (when i start FF it re-opens previous tabs)
Third case :
- Firefox and Thunderbird are opened
- I click on a link to send an email (<a href="mailto:......@.....">)
- A few seconds after that a Thunderbird windows pops up. The title is : "Close Thunderbird", the content is : "Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system."
As in the second case, if TB is closed when i click on the mailto, TB opens properly and send the email.
If Internet Explorer is set as my default browser, it works fine for "Thunderbird -> link -> IE" but the "IE-> mailto -> TB" still doesn't work.
I already looked up for some answers on google but can't find something which works.
Thank you in advance for your answers.
Vincent

Check the target field in the Firefox desktop shortcut and make sure that you do not start Firefox with the -no-remote switch or have set the environment variable MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1 (Control Panel > System > Advanced > Environment variables).
Always make sure to start at least the default profile without the -no-remote command line switch.
If you need to have more than one profile open at the same time then start subsequent instances with the -no-remote command line switch.
You can not send links from other programs to a Firefox instance that is started with the -no-remote switch.
In such a case you need to drag links in a Firefox window or paste the link in the location bar.

• How to get links from other applications to open a new Firefox window

I have non-Web browser applications that want to open browser windows. I have Firefox as my default Web browser. When these other applications pass a URL to Windows, Windows passes the URL to Firefox. Unless there are no Firefox windows running, Firefox then opens the URL in a new tab of the most recently used Firefox window. I would prefer that Firefox open a completely new window. Where can I find the setting for this behavior?
Thank you,
Dan

Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

• Firefox 6.0.2 is no longer opening links from other programs even with all extensions disabled

Firefox updated to 6.0.2 last night and now it will not open any links from outside programs. When you click the hyperlink, the window flashes but Firefox does not respond. I have disabled all extensions, it did not affect the issues.
Also with this update, I am unable to use Synergy, Firefox locks the cursor to one computer and will not let it move to another.

I am having the same problem with Firefox version 8.0.1. I checked addons and they are up to date. When I make Chrome my default browser hyperlinks work fine to Chrome.

• Open links from other apps in Private Browsing

When other Android apps open links in the default web browser, Firefox Mobile launches them in a normal new tab. How can I force these links to open in Private Browsing?

I'm not aware of a built-in way to do this: as far as I can see, Firefox for Android cannot be set to create new tabs automatically in private browsing mode. I took a quick look at the Add-ons site and didn't see a solution there, either. Hopefully you will get some more promising responses.

• I have 37.0.2 verssion and still can't open links from my gmail. Please help.

After upgrading Firefox to the latest version 37.0.2 I can't open any hyperlinks neither from my gmail or other websites. Could you help me please?

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
* Click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".
;
If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.
To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

• Can't open links from email

I'm using Firefox 29 on Win7x64. It's my default browser. Sometimes, when I try to open a web link from Outlook email or Yahoo email, the link does not open. Instead, Firefox opens a process every time that I click, but does not open the link or even a page. If I try to open another Firefox instance by clicking the shortcut, yet another process starts, but a page does not open. Safe mode does not help. The only resolution thus far is to close every process or reboot, and then re-install Firefox. This issue began in v29 or the one just before. I also have tried suggestions posted to the forum. Thanks!

I've tried this several times. It works for a while, but the issue recurs. Resting Firefox never is a good solution for any Firefox issue.

• Firefox won't open links from other programs if already running

I've seen this reported many other places, but none of the solutions have worked. I am running Firefox v33.0.2 (current as of this message) on Windows 7 64-bit (fully updated). I did the following:
1. Completely deleted my profile;
2. Uninstalled Firefox, then manually deleted all remaining files on the system pertaining to Firefox and rebooted;
3. Gone into the Windows "Default Programs" control panel (DPCP) and told it to make Internet Explorer the default (giving it all of its defaults);
4. Downloaded a fresh copy of the installer and installed Firefox 33.0.2;
5. Let the installer set my default browser to Firefox;
6. Tested link opening behaviour (see below);
7. Let Firefox set itself as the default browser when it asked me;
8. Tested link opening behaviour again (see below);
9. With Firefox not running, gone back into the DPCP, and had it set all of Firefox's defaults;
10. Tested link opening behaviour again (see below);
11. With Firefox not running, set Internet Explorer to the default via the DPCP, then back to Firefox;
12. Tested link opening behaviour again (see below);
13. Repeated steps 11 and 12 with Firefox in safe-mode;
14. Repeated steps 11 and 12 with Firefox in normal-mode with a new profile;
The observed link-opening behaviour:
- Internet shortcuts (i.e., actual shortcut files on, say, the Desktop) open in Firefox without issue whether or not Firefox is already running. When this approach is taken, no additional firefox.exe processes are created. The process does not have any command-line parameters per Task Manager;
- Links clicked in Thunderbird open correctly if Firefox is not running: one new firefox.exe process is created, I get a new Firefox window and the link loads correctly. The firefox.exe process does not have any command-line parameters per Task Manager;
- Links clicked in Thunderbird yield the "Firefox is already running, but is not responding" message if Firefox is already running. In this case, I see a second firefox.exe process created. Per Task Manager, the new process has the command-line arguments '-osint -url "FOO"' where FOO is the URL I clicked.
From these observations I believe that the link hand-off behaviour is broken. I use a single profile using the as-installed shortcuts.
Intitial version: 33.0.2
Update: Updated to 33.1, still broken.

Under Tools > Options > Advanced look to see if the "check if Firefox is default browser on startup" Check this and then restart FF. If it isn't the default it should ask if you want to make it the default. Choose yes and it should open when clicking links again.

• How can I open links from mail in the background?

I receive a lot of digest emails with lots of links. I would like to be able to click all of the links in a given email, have Safari open those pages in the background, and then when I'm done selecting the links I can switch to Safari and read them all. It's a logical workflow for me: click all the links you want to read, THEN go read them.
But instead, every single time I click on a link it jumps to Safari, so I have to switch back to Mail, click on the next link (which again jumps to Safari), etc. NetNewsWire allows me to open all my links in the background so I can avoid all this switching back and forth--can Mail do the same thing?
Thanks in advance for any help ...
--Bill

You should be able to Command-click on the link in Mail and have it open in the background.

• Can't open files from an application by dragging the file from another window

In Mac os x 10.6, i was able to to open a file by simply dragging it and placing it on the 'open' Window which automatically changes the location to where the dragged file is. Ever since updating to Lion, i'd have to go folder by folder from the 'Open' window until i get to where the file is and selecting it.
i

I tried it with so many applications Like When i'm sending a file via bluetooth, i tried opening a file with iTunes too by dragging to see if it'll work, it didn't. I tried uploading a Photo to facebook too by dragging it to the select photo window, it didn't work.

• Can't open links from Messages anymore

I have just noticed that when I go to email messages in Messages that have a link in the message, it is no longer an active link that I can select on and go to it in my browser.  I was able to do this before with, for example, responses from message boards.  Not sure what changed?

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness creeps in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
