Can't open Mac iTunes library on Windows

I'm wondering how I can make my iTunes library database file work with both Mac and Windows off of an external hard drive. On my Mac the drive gets a firewire connection, and on the PC it gets USB connection. Either way, when I hold shift on Windows and option on Mac to choose a library it won't load the ITL file. It is a valid file because I have used it with iTunes before (only on the Mac) What do I do?

I'mma bump this. Still no solution.

  • Can I open an iTunes library running on a mac from a PC over the network?

I've got an iMac running iTunes with my main library on it and a Vista laptop on the same network, running the latest version of iTunes, with a blank library. Can I open the library on the iMac and use it on the Vista laptop without screwing it up on the iMac?
I don't want to change, remove, or add anything from the Vista laptop, just use the library. I know I can share the library out from the iMac and that works fine, but I'm running Vista Media Center and want to access my iTunes library from Windows Media Center. There are plug-ins for Windows Media Center that make this happen but they have to be running on a PC with iTunes running.
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks

Assuming you have AVG then yes, a second patch has apparently been released to day which may resolve the issue. See this post for general advice.
If you don't see the .itl file extension then don't add it to the filename of the renamed file.
    iTunes Library 2012-09-22.itl > iTunes Library.itl
iTunes Library 2012-09-22 > iTunes Library
My advice has generally been aimed at Windows users, but if you have AVG on a Mac and that too suffers from this issue then it is worth nothing that at one point the iTunes Library on a Mac was stored without any extension. If you match the name of the empty library file you are replacing it should work.

  • ITunes 7.6 can't open the iTunes library under other accounts

I created a new account in Windows Vista and wanted to just open my iTunes library that's on an external HD.
I hold down left shift, and open an existing library, but I keep getting an error that the iTunes database is locked.
I've checked the permissions on the file and folders, and I have the rights to the folders/files, as well, nothing is set for read only on the file level.
If I log out and login with the old user name, I can access the library just fine, so it's not corrupt.
    Any ideas?

It's difficult to explain, but in a nutshell, iTunes doesn't do well with windows folder paths.

  • Sharing Mac iTunes library with Windows PC (I want to be able to read/write)

Greetings from a new Mac user. I recently purchased a 27" iMAC running OS X 10.7.3. This iMac is now connected to my home network/workgroup.
    - I want to build a new iTunes Library on my 1TB internal Mac HD.
    - I want my 3 non Mac Machines (1 XP Prof and 2 Windows 7 Home) to be able to view the contents of my new (not yet built) iTunes Library resident on my iMac and of course be able to
    - play that content.
    - have play counts from my Windows-based be saved back to my iTunes Library.
    - be able to rate a song from any computer (Mac or Windows) within this iTunes Library and have that rating saved back to this iTunes Library.
I don't want to have to rely on iTunes "Shared Library" function. In other words I want all PCs to be able to read/write to the same iTunes Library file.
Before I purchased my iMac, my iTunes Library existed on one of my Windows-file system external drives. The pre-requisites for allowing multiple Windows PCs to access/share/write to the same iTunes Library was to:
    - share the Windows folder on the external drive in which the iTunes Library file was stored (allowing network users to be able to change the files), and
    - make sure all Windows-based PCs ran the same iTunes software version.
Assume: I don't want to change the version of Windows iTunes software from the currently installed 10.5.0 version.
Question 1: Can my Windows PCs access and utilize the same iTunes library file that I plan to build on my iMac hard drive?
Question 2: What older version of Mac iTunes software should I install on my iMac in order to allow the Windows PCs to access and use the iMacs iTunes library file?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hmmm...  thanks for the reply.  This of course, yields another question.  When you say 'you could format to FAT32 which both can use'; do you mean format the iTunes Hard drive on which my iTunes music now resides?  If so, this would mean I would need to copy the music off the internal iMac hard drive, then format the drive to FAT32, then copy the music back.
    Is this what you meant?

  • How can I copy my iTunes library to windows media player?

Hi, I've spent all morning trying to consolidate all my music into Windows Media Player...so I can make playlists, etc. iTunes seems to be pretty tough....I've moved the library file around....copied, etc. and I can't seen to paste it into Windows Media Player. My itunes library has about 50 purchased songs, and another 100 from my own CDs.
Does anyone know how to do this? I'm getting really irritable over this!!!
    Thanks in advance!

The iTunes purchased songs will not transfer to Windows Media Player. Unless you have the iTunes Plus versions, iTunes purchased files are copy protected.
There is nothing preventing you from adding the other files to Windows Media Player except for maybe file format. Did you rip the CDs to AAC or MP3 format. Don't know if WMP can play AAC. WMP has no problems with MP3.
To add MP3 files to WMP just add them using WMP functions.

  • How can I upload my Itunes library to Windows Media Player?

    Hello,
    Please can someone help me.
I want to keep my Windows Media Player library in sync with my Itunes library.
Does anyone know how to do this?

In WMP, go to Library > Add to Library, and make sure it is watching any folder where you have music, such as My Music. Then, as you add songs to your iTunes library manually, WMP will add them automatically to its library. (The opposite will not work, since iTunes does not have the ability to automatically watch folders.)
Since you will be using both players, I strongly suggest you use music only in MP3 format. Also, you must absolutely avoid purchasing any tracks with DRM, since there is no DRM scheme that both players can handle.

  • Can't open my iTunes library file.

I recently downloaded the latest version of iTunes. When I try to open my "iTuneslibrary.itl" file I get a message "this file cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes". It was created 2 years ago!! How can it be newer than today's version?

    Hi there Br0x,
You may want to try rebuilding the iTunes library as an initial troubleshooting step. Take a look at the article below for more information.

  • How can i transfer my itunes library from windows pc to imac

Can somebody help me?  Im trying to shift my itunes library from my windows pc to my imac.  Is this posible?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
It's possible and easy. The best way to transfer the iTunes library is to use an external drive. Follow these steps > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
You have to do the "Restoring your iTunes Library backup" on the iMac, so you will get the iTunes library you had on the PC onto the iMac

  • Help ... Can't open my ITunes at My Windows XP

Help .. I really need all of your help. I have ITunes previously at my XP and never fails to open it. Suddenly for almost a week I can't open it. Have follow the FAQ listed at Support section, un-install, re-install, still it didn't work. It's been two days now and I can't do anything. The error message only stated that Itunes encountered some problem and have to closed and reported this error to Microsoft. But what kind of error, no information at all.
I've posted my question to Apple Support and Microsoft but haven't received any answer.
Is there somebody out there know how to fix this problem ?

  • How can I transfer my iTunes library from Windows to my new Macbook and retain my iPhone contacts?

    Hello,
I am running iTunes on Windows Vista with music, videos. This is paired to a 3GS which has many contacts on it. The iPhone is regularly synced and backed up.
I have just bought a new MacBook Pro and want to transfer my entire iTunes system over. I see that I can transfer the music library over with Home Sharing. I want to ensure, however, that when I sync my iPhone with my NEW MacBook Pro, that all the data is retained. I am most concerned with losing the contacts on the phone.
Does anybody know how I can do this? I just want to wholesale copy the iTunes environment onto my new machine, I guess.
    Thanks,

Contacts (and Calendars) are not part of iTunes. iTunes is simply used to sync them from whatever apps you are using.
This is for Mac OS 10.4 but it will work for whatever you are now running.

  • Convert a Mac iTunes library to a Windows iTunes library?

This sounds like heresy, but I've switched my home system from a ten year old Mac Powerbook, to a screamingly fast, new Dell laptop. I have a large iTunes library on the old Mac; s there a way I can convert my Mac iTunes Library into a Windows iTunes Library, or do I have to (gasp) rebuild the whole thing in Windows?

    Hello autochthon,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • I can't open my iTunes "Error: New iTunes Library" help =(

Starting today, I can not open my iTunes library. Every time I try to open it, a error message shows up saying "Error: New iTunes Library". I don't know how to fix it. I've tried restarting my computer, taking the battery out, uninstalling iTunes (I couldn't uninstall it either! It wouldn't let me), and deleting the recent library change. Nothing has worked. I need help on how to fix it and what the error means please!

Try removing the Genius database.  In the "Finder" go to the /username/Music/iTunes/ folder and delete the "iTunes Library Genius.itdb" file. This may allow the program to launch again. This file will be recreated upon first use of the "Genius" feature.

  • How can I move my PC (Windows 7) iTunes library (with my cps ripped) to my Mac iTunes library?

Just for my curiosity and knowledge,
    I have a PC (Windows 7) and a Mac (OS X 10.10).
Both of them with the latest version of iTunes.
Both of them with the exact music library (genre, artist, album, etc).
All my music is coming from iTunes Store, so very easy to re download at any time I want with my Apple ID
My PC (Windows 7) computer has a CD/DVD drive. I would like to RIP some music from my CDs and add them to my PC (Windows 7) iTunes library.
Once I finished, how can I move my PC (Windows 7) iTunes library (with my cps ripped) to my Mac iTunes library?
    Thank you so much

If you've downloaded the media idependently to each library so far then thet won't be exactly the same as there are different naming rules for the files and folders in OS X and Windows. See Make a split library portable for some general advice. You can move a portable library between Mac and Windows, but there is a delay opening the library after each change of OS.
