Can't Open Macintosh HD Icon

I've had an intermittent problem with opening my hard drive from it's icon on the desk top. Or indeed any folder on the desktop. I've tried deleting the desktop pref file which cured it for a while, but it keeps happening. Another wierd cure was dragging any file from the desktop on to the hard drive icon, but basically the error is - I double click on my HD icon to open it - the screen flashes - goes completely blank for a few seconds and then then returns to it's original state without opening anything. Not exactly the dream upgrade I'd been reading about!
I wished I'd waited a few months before installing SN as it's caused all kinds of grief - this being the most annoying. The other bug is saving all attachments in mail... which crashes it.

HI Jon,
Hopefully this is the upgrade causing this and not the hard drive itself.
Boot from your SL disk and check the startup disk for errors.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
Check available disk space.
Control or right click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop. Click "Get Info". Under the General tab you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is at least 10% available disk space, 15% is better.
If the hard disk appears to be ok and there's plenty of disk space, then boot from your original install disk and run the Apple Hardware Test.

Can't open my mail icon, as soon it launches it shuts down immediately

Have you tried closing the Mail app completely and then re-opening it ? From the home screen double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

I can't open the Bookmarks icon in the toolbar.

    Hi there,
Could you clarify what you mean with the Bookmark icon? Either with a screenshot or by describing how it looks like.
Here is a general Bookmarks tutorial that shows how to use bookmarks in Firefox. Maybe it can be of help: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/use-bookmarks-to-save-and-organize-websites

  • I can not open the mail icon

All of a sudden I can not open my mail icon, zilch nothing HELP! please

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try to launch Mail. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

I can't open the "phone" icon on my 3GS. I starts to open when I press it but then i goes back to the home screen. I can receive calls but now as a result I can't make calls. I've done a restore on the phone and still no luck. Help!

    The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
Restart... Reset... Restore from Backup...  Restore as New...
    Restart / Reset

Try this First... You will Not Lose Any Data...
Turn the Phone Off... ( if it isn’t already )
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear and then Disappear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
    Release the Buttons...
    Turn the Phone On...

  • HT2500 Hello I can't open my mail icon

I can not open the mail application on my MacBook.

From the Icon in the dock? Have you tried going to your Applications folder and opening it from there?
If it opens from the Applications folder, try dragging the icon off the dock and droppong it on the desktop, it vanish, then drag the mail application to the dock to create a new alias.
Also have you run this update:

  • OS X 10.5.6 Time machine can't open "Macintosh HD"

I recently set up Time machine to backup to an external Firewire drive. According to the status in the menu bar it has been backing up fine. When I enter Time machine and try to browse to my internal hard drive which is labeled "Macintosh HD"
    I get the following error:
There is no default application specified to open the document Macintosh HD.
Although I do not seem to be able to take a screenshot within Time Machine, the same error occurs if I try and browse the backup directly in the Finder window. See here: http://www2.itec.suny.edu/~lofftjm/timemachineerror.png

Okay, the only thing I can think of is this.
    1. Turn TM off (in >System Preferences...>Time Machine. You may have to unlock the lock to disable it.)
    2. Go to >System Preferences...>Sharing, and unlock the lock if necessary.
    3. Under "Computer Name", click "Edit", and change your computer's name to something WITHOUT an apostrophe, and using ONLY characters A-Z, a-z, and 1-9. I think spaces may be OK, too, but it would probably be better to avoid them, just in case.
    4. Follow these steps to erase the TM drive and start over.
NOTE: THIS WILL ERASE EVERYTHING ON EVERY PARTITION OF THE EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE.
    1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
    2. Click the drive just above your external drive-it will have a weird name, which mentions the drive manufacturer and the capacity of the drive.
    3. Click the "Partition" tab.
    4. Under "Volume Scheme", select "1 Partition". Click "Options", then click "GUID Partition Table" if you are on an Intel-based mac, or "Apple Partition Map", if you are on a Power PC-based mac. (check by clicking >About This Mac. Under "Processor", you will see either Intel or Power PC mentioned).
    5. Click "Apply"
    6. Click the (indented) drive you want to back up to, and select the "Erase" tab. Under "Name", type the name you want, and for format, select "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
    7. Click "Erase".
    8. Enable TM (by sliding the switch in step 1 to "On"), and select the external drive to back up to.
    Good luck!

I can not open up any icons on the dock, I just upgraded to Leopard. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

On you iPad, force close all the Apps in the multitask window.
Follow these steps to force an app to close:
From the Home screen, click the Home button twice.
Tap and hold on the app.
When it starts to jiggle, tap the to close it on by one until all cleared
Now do a Soft reset of your iPad:
Hold both Home and Sleep button for around 10secs until you see the Apple logo then release. After it returns to Home screen, try your Apps again and see if this resolves the issue.

  • Can't open folders/explorer after sleep or hibernation

I recently started to have this problem where when the laptop is woken up after either a sleep/hibernation, I can't open any folders.  I can't open the computer icon, any folders on my desktop and the Windows File Explorer.  I can, however,  open the files (Excel, IE, Firefox) on the desktop even when this problem comes up.
It doesn't happen every time the laptop is woken up from either state but happens at least every other day.
In order resolve the issue, I have to restart the computer or log out and re-login.
I thought I had some corrupt files so I re-imaged the HD to its original state, but the problem came back.
    Any thoughts or suggestions???
    I have X230 with Windows 7 64bit
    Thanks.

This worked for me: I trashed my mouse prefs, then restarted, then -- goto System Prefs --> Keyboard/Mouse --> Mouse --> Double-Click Speed: Now move the speed a minimum of one notch below FAST.
Yesterday I installed a Logitech MX Revolution, cordless mouse and lost the ability to double click with it and with my Mighty Mouse. Resetting the double click speed below FAST miraculously reset.
    All seems OK now.
