Can't Open Mail after security update 10.6.8

I can not get the mail app to run. This is the error message I keep getting.
Did the SecUpd2012-004 update.
After the update, I had (and still have) 2 copies of mail in my application folder.
I've repaired my permissions.
Tried to got back using the time machine (that was a waste of hours).
Also, deleted the mail app (8.1) and then reinstalled the SecUpd2012-004.
Only thing I haven't done is to do the Combo 10.6.8 update.
I've noticed that other people are starting similar threads. Anybody have a solution? I've been working on it all day and no joy.

Well, I thought that we might have had a solution, but no such luck.
I did the combined update - and after that I had only one Mail app in the applications folder (encouraging) - and it appeared to be the correct one by it's icon.
Thought about doing a repair permissions but didn't do it after the combined update.
After the combined update, I did the secUpd, the second mail app was there with it's generic icon again and
Needless to say, I'm back to square 1.
So, I'm thinking I've got some options here. One of my options would be to get another HD, slug it into one of the open HD slots, take out my 10.6 CD format it and then if possible use time machine to put that drive in the state where everything worked right before the update. This would seem to be the fastest, time wise way of making the issue go away.
You guys think I could / should delete the 4.6 mail app and start over with the combined update and then do a permissions repair after the update?

Most likely because you have Finder's preferences->Advanced->Show all filename extensions unchecked. Check it, log out, and back in and all the apps should display the .app extension.
Now, back to your problem. If you installed the Security Update 2012-004, it failed to update Mail to 4.6; thus, your problem. Manually DL it from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1586 and reinstall it.

Can't send mail after security update

Hello, I installed a security update friday night, and can no longer send email using either Mail 2.1 or Thunderbird. Both were working prior to the security update.
I am not getting any error messages except for the ones over the phone that go..."did you get my email? What email?" In fact, both Mail and Thunderbird give every indication that the email was sent.
I can mail myself a test from a web program, so my smtp server is working.
I can receive mail fine.
I am blaming the security update for this, but I have no idea where to look or what to do. Can I uninstall the update?

The thing is, AFAIK Mail wouldn't put the message in the Sent mailbox unless it has received confirmation from the outgoing server that the message has indeed been sent, so it seems to me that the problem is not that messages are not being sent, but rather that they don't arrive at the destination for some reason.
I bcc myself on every email for filing reasons and have
not recieved one of my own emails since Friday night.
Do you receive other mail normally? Have you checked for those messages on the web?
I can log into my employers web tool and send email that way,
so something is going on with my machine, whatever it is.
Well, not necessarily. Maybe there is something wrong with the outgoing server you're using in Mail. Is this your only mail account? Do you have access to any other outgoing server that you could try?

iMac runiing 10.6.8 and Mail version 4.6 has not received any emails since I did software update on 9/19/12. I can receive mail in my accounts on my iPhone.

Can't open mail after Mavericks upgrade on macbook air

I cannot open mail after upgrading to mavericks.
The mail icon appears to recognise it is open as it has the mark under it while in the taskbar alone the bottom. But that is as far as it goes, the mail window does not open to view emails. The email icon in the task bar on the bottom looks like it does when you have an application open and have minimised it. I have tried running repair disk utlity which did nothing.
Is there any easy fix for someone who is only moderately confident with the back end of a computer.

I can't open my Mail after updating to Safari 7.0.6.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Can't open mail after update

I am getting an error message saying that mail can't open because the newer version may be located elsewhere than in applications. I have checked and I have versions 4.5 and 4.6 in applications. I have followed instructions in help to reinstall Mac OS and security update then try mail again, but it still doesn't work. Do I need to delete 4.5? Sounds daft to you experts I'm sure, but am worried I will lose all my emails if I do so. Also, seems that Adobe wants to open all files as default, but I can't figure out how to change that (in case that's the problem). Would love some help, please.

Delete 4.5. I would then go through the steps again (see here). It won't lose your setting or messages.
Select a file that Adobe is opening, Command-I to bring up the Info window, choose what it should be opened with, then click Change All.

STILL can't open Mail after 10.6.8 update

I have tried everything suggested on previous posts. I went into CrashPlan, fetched my backup mail, dropped it in Applications. Tried opening it, to no avail, Then re-installed the update. Still nothing. Tried this several times. Further, I've just received my regular notice the CrashPlan backed up today, which I think means they have now backed up the messed up mail and I can no longer access my original mail application?? HELP.

Make an appointment with the Genius' at an Apple Store. This is a new problem with the "automatic update". My mail was working great until I did the normal automatic updates. After the update my mail icon would just bounce once and the message about my version not working. I also did the dropping in my ap folder, didn't work.
Prior to my Genius appt. I had re-installed mail from the "applications" from original "Install OS X" dvd. Not the "application install dvd". It gave me the original version. I then tried to do an update but it said it was updated. Which was impossible because the computer is 1 1/2 yrs old and there were many updates from then til now. Maybe my 2012-004 worked because i had re-installed mail from my original dvd that came with my computer.
Going to the Genius is free, (but an appt. is necessary) and they ask each other if they do not know right off the bat, it worked great for me. Best of luck...

Can't open Mail after 10.10.3 update

Just updated from 10.10.2 to 10.10.3 on iMac Retina 5K. All seems fine except mail quits immediately upon opening. Applied combo update, no difference. Worked fine before update. Able to access mail accounts via iOS devices without incident. Any help or ideas are appreciated. Crash report reads as follows:

I managed to solve this by removing all the "Envelope Index" and "External Updates" files from the ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData folder. There are several files each beginning with "Envelope Index" and several with "External Updates". Dumping them all allowed Mail to start up again. Hope this is of some use.

Am having problem opening Mail after downloading updates yesterday

After allowing updates to be download on my computer yesterday I can not use/open my mail file. The following message appears when I try:

If you have security software (antivirus, firewall etc.) installed, you can try deleting all existing instances of Firefox and related files in all the different configuration areas/modules of the security software. Instead create new allow/trusted rules for Firefox and its related processes. Cannot attach items in Mail after security update

This may be a bit of post hoc ergo propter hoc, but since applying the security update yesterday, I am unable to attach files (.jpg .pdf .xls .doc .gif have all been attempted) in Mail (Version 2.1.3 (753.1)).
I have tried by dragging files into the message both before and after the signature and using the attachment button on the message. I have put text in the subject line and body in case the signature were not enough to allow the attachment, this did not work.
I have verified and repaired the disc permissions just in case and have run the unix cleanup routines, these did not fix the issue.
I have tried this on two separate accounts (one IMAP the other POP) with the same result. I have not experienced this issue in the past.

How can I open iTunes after recent update 01/25/2014

After installing the recent update for iTunes, I can't open iTunes. Tried to uninstall/reinstais missing, with same results. I have received several error messages: MSVCR80.dill is missing. Please re-install, error 7 Windows error (126).
When will this corrupted download be fixed? I can't access iTunes at all.

Do the following:
Uninstall from Windows the following four programs: iTunes, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour and Apple Application Support. You do this from an applet in Control Panel called Programs & Features (in Windows 8, 7, or Vista) or Add or Remove Programs (in Windows XP).
Download the latest version of iTunes from Apple and note the location you're saving it to so you can find it once it's done.
Run the iTunes installation as an administrator, just Right click iTunes installer and Run as Administrator.

HELP!!!!!!!Can't open mail after install. new keybrd & mouse

After much use, my Apple keyboard & mouse have reached retirement. I ordered a Logitech S530 Laser keyboard and mouse. After installing, I was impressed with the product, though a bit too large for my small hands...if that were the biggest problem, I might be ok. Here's the trouble, while I can launch my Mac Mail and see any new items, I can't open anything that is new or previously viewed. I can open the compose portion and send new mail. I uninstalled the software and hardware, reconnected my old keyboard and mouse and Yes, I did restart...after installation and "uninstallation" and "reinstallation" and now my old stuff won't work either. I've checked and rechecked all Logitech's info, I have the latest software and short of reinstalling Mail, I'm wondering if there is any other solution. I want a wirelesskeyboard/mouse, will opt for Bluetooth if available and want something that is as visually pleasing as my Mac monitor. I thought the Logitech was as close as I could get, is it just not compatible with OS 10.4.8? Help please!!!!!

After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, proceed as follows:
1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console.
2. From the File menu, choose either Open Console Log, or Open System Log, or both, so that Console displays the contents of both system.log and console.log.
3. Try to open a message by double-clicking on it and look at the bottom of the Console windows for messages that might be written there as a result. They may provide some clues.
Do you have any Mail plug-ins or system utilities that could interfere with Mail? In the Finder, go to each of the following folders (if they exist). What do you see there?

~/Library/Mail/Bundles/
