Can't open MAIL, iCal or Preview
Please excuse me... I'm in a learning mode in using this Apple Support Communities medium.
I clicked that my reply answered my problem as my issue suddenly resolved itself when in fact I still have the same problem and more.
On 12-Jul-2012 10:09 AM
I sent this...
I had quit Mail.
I attempt to reopen Mail by clicking its Mail icon on the Dock.
The Mail icon on the Dock bounces 2 times then stops.
The Mail application does not open.
I tried opening Mail in the Application Folder. It doesn't open there either.
Any ideas?
Now Mail, iCal and Preview aren't opening.
Linc Davis provided 2 steps to do and I have recopied my reply from my previous post to this one...
Step 1
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Post the messagesfrom the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

~ GraceWhen Apple programs fail to launch but third-party programs work fine, there is a strong chance that you have inadvertently disabled some needed system font with FontBook or other font manager program. I suffered this after trying to shut off fonts I thought were surplus.
If you have been playing with FontBook, return to it and make sure ALL font are active. Although you'll have to deal with some oddball fonts in your font menus, that should get thing going.
If FontBook shows no disabled fonts, you may have a corrupted font involved.
One of the top users in these forums, Kurt Lang, authored an excellent overview of font management that you can read here:

-The application Mail quit unexpectedly. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected. Click Relaunch to launch the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple.
The above error message appears after I attempt to open the Mail application. Recently the Mail icon was a question mark, however it was found but still clicking on it I can not open Mail. After attempting to click Relaunch twice in a row, during a third time the follow error message appears:
-Do you want to resent application settings for Mail? The application quit unexpectedly after itwas relaunched. Resetting the application settings may fix the problem. You will be givethe opportunity to restore your original settings when you quit the applications.
When I click Reset and Relaunch I am brought back the error mentioned I previously encountered first, ergo the whole problem beings again, and the same thing happens again when I click Relaunch.
When I click Ignore or Do Not Relaunch the application quits, of course. When I click Report the application sends a 'report' page.
Somebody please help me get my mail working again. Thank you.Really? Nobody has any idea?

On 10.4.11 iMac Mac Mail I get this message: "Mail cannot update your mailboxes because your home directory is full. You must free up space in your home folder before using Mail. Delete unneeded documents or move documents to another volume." I can't open mail to do this. I have reinstalled software but no effect. How do I get into Mail to delete?
Found this on the "more like this" Worked like a charm!
With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Go to Home > Library > Mail > Envelope Index. Move the Envelope Index file to the Desktop.
Launch Mail and you will be prompted to import mailboxes. Select OK and allow the import process to complete.
After confirming all mailboxes were successfully imported and available, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and old Envelope Index file from the Desktop and this should resolve the problem. -

Can't open mail after installing update with 10.6.8 says my mail is out of date
Please help - new to Macs and I installed automatic update of 10.6.8 - 4 days ago and now I can't open up mail - it says "You can't use this version of Mail with this version of Mac OS X. You tried to open Mail version 4.5 (1084/1085) in Applications/ Mail.
So I went to Applications, says this message again. So I used my discs that came with the computer adn installed again Applications - no luck.
I had luckily backed up 2 days before this update - so went to Time Machine - did restore - now good still - can't open mail. CLick on Iconand get same messgae .
Please help. Thank yourainbowmum wrote:
Thank you for the very clear basic instructions—helpful for a newbie.…Also my first screen shot !! I see that it does not have .App next to it
Most likely because you have Finder's preferences->Advanced->Show all filename extensions unchecked. Check it, log out, and back in and all the apps should display the .app extension.
Now, back to your problem. If you installed the Security Update 2012-004, it failed to update Mail to 4.6; thus, your problem. Manually DL it from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1586 and reinstall it. -
I updated my Mac to Mavericks and after that, I can't open the Mail, Contacts and Calendar preferences.
Every time I try, I get the following message:
"You can’t open Mail, Contacts & Calendars preferences because it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac."
I tried this workaround from the Mountain Lion thread (https://discussions.apple.com/message/21303574#21303574) but it didn't worked.
Further I deleted all files in the Library Preferences folder, but it didn't helped also.
Can anyone help me please?Hi Michael,
I had the same problem. And I found a fix.
I noticed that on a different system running Mavericks without any problems, the preference pane isn't called 'Mail, Contacts & Calendars' anymore, it's now called 'Internet accounts'. The fact that it's still called by the old name on your system, means it somehow wasn't replaced while updating to Mavericks.
So the cure is pretty easy:
On a different Mavericks system, go to /System/Library/PreferencePanes/ and copy the file InternetAccounts.prefPane. Take it to the system you're trying to fix, and paste the prefPane file in the same directory. Reboot, and it should all work fine. At least it did in my case.
Cheers

Office 2004 Applications Won't Work in Lion
You must have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite and will not work in Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
NeoOffice
Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
Keynote - presentation
Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.) -

Hello tomzmem,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
This situation does sound very frustrating. I know that you have tried some great troubleshooting steps already and the issue remains unresolved. Have you forced the Mail application to close and then opened it back fresh? If not, this is the next troubleshooting step I would suggest. Please let me know if the issue remains unresolved.
