Can't open Mail, Index is broken!

Hi, I need some help.
I don't use Mail on my iMac or Macbook Pro Retina but need it to run some AppleScripts, so I tried to open it on my Macbook Pro Retina and iMac but can't open it on either, it just comes up with the below:
First:
To use the new features in Mail, your existing Mail messages need to be imported into the new version the first time you use Mail. this might take a few minutes. You won't be able to use Mail until the import is finished.
Click Continue to import your messages now, or click Cancel to import later.
If you click cancel, it just closes and if you click continue it does the below:
The Upgrade Failed
An error occurred during the upgrade. Click continue to launch the Mail Import Assistant, which will help you create a new library and import your existing messages.
So I then click continue and this is what appears:
You Mail Index has been damaged. To repair it, quit Mail.
Mail will repair the index the next time you open Mail. Your mailboxes and messages will be preserved.
So I then click Quit. It shuts down and then if you try to open it again, it just does the same thing again and again.
I have managed to fix the one on my Macbook Pro Retina by following what some people suggested on other posts, what worked was deleting the com.apple.mail folder inside Library/Containers. And I haven't had a problem since but with the iMac once this file is deleted, it allows you to go through the whole set up for a new account and then goes into the same error pattern as mentioned above. I have also tried deleting the Envelope Index inside Library/Mail/V2/Mail Data and in the Mail folder too, but nothing seems to work.
Can someone please adivse as to how I can re set my Mail, there is nothing in there so it can be rebooted or something like that. I just don't understand why I have managed to fix in one computer and not in the other one !!
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Sally

Quit Mail. Then select
 ▹ Force Quit...
from the menu bar. A small window will open with a list of running applications. Mail may appear in that list, even though you quit it. If so, select it and press return. Close the window.
In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. Move the following items from the folder that opens to the Trash (some may not exist):
Caches/com.apple.mail
Saved Application State/com.apple.mail.savedState
Application Support/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4.abcdmr
Containers/com.apple.mail
Mail
Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (OS X 10.7 only)
Preferences/com.apple.mail.searchhistory.plist (OS X 10.7 only)
Note: you are not moving the Mail application. You’re moving a folder named “Mail.”
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail. It will behave as if you were running it for the first time. Go through the setup process with one of your accounts.

On 10.4.11 iMac Mac Mail I get this message: "Mail cannot update your mailboxes because your home directory is full. You must free up space in your home folder before using Mail. Delete unneeded documents or move documents to another volume." I can't open mail to do this. I have reinstalled software but no effect. How do I get into Mail to delete?

Found this on the "more like this" Worked like a charm!
With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Go to Home > Library > Mail > Envelope Index. Move the Envelope Index file to the Desktop.
Launch Mail and you will be prompted to import mailboxes. Select OK and allow the import process to complete.
After confirming all mailboxes were successfully imported and available, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and old Envelope Index file from the Desktop and this should resolve the problem.

  • Can Not Open Mail CNOM

-The application Mail quit unexpectedly. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected. Click Relaunch to launch the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple.
The above error message appears after I attempt to open the Mail application. Recently the Mail icon was a question mark, however it was found but still clicking on it I can not open Mail. After attempting to click Relaunch twice in a row, during a third time the follow error message appears:
-Do you want to resent application settings for Mail? The application quit unexpectedly after itwas relaunched. Resetting the application settings may fix the problem. You will be givethe opportunity to restore your original settings when you quit the applications.
When I click Reset and Relaunch I am brought back the error mentioned I previously encountered first, ergo the whole problem beings again, and the same thing happens again when I click Relaunch.
When I click Ignore or Do Not Relaunch the application quits, of course. When I click Report the application sends a 'report' page.
Somebody please help me get my mail working again. Thank you.

    Really? Nobody has any idea?

    Hi,
I check this issue in my environment, but cannot repro this issue.
Please check the following path to click the right cpl file:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\MLCFG32.CPL
If that works, you need check this registry path to see if it points a right path to the .cpl file:

  • Can't open mail after installing update with 10.6.8 says my mail is out of date

Please help - new to Macs and I installed automatic update of 10.6.8 - 4 days ago and now I can't open up mail  - it says "You can't use this version of Mail with this version of Mac OS X. You tried to open Mail version 4.5 (1084/1085) in Applications/ Mail.
So I went to  Applications, says this message again. So I   used my discs that  came with the computer adn installed again  Applications - no luck.
I had luckily  backed up 2 days before this update - so went to Time Machine - did restore - now good still - can't  open mail. CLick on Iconand get same messgae .
    Please help. Thank you

Thank you for the very clear basic instructions—helpful for a newbie.…Also my first screen shot !! I see that it does not have .App next to it
Most likely because you have Finder's preferences->Advanced->Show all filename extensions unchecked. Check it, log out, and back in and all the apps should display the .app extension.
Now, back to your problem. If you installed the Security Update 2012-004, it failed to update Mail to 4.6; thus, your problem. Manually DL it from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1586 and reinstall it.

  • You can't open Mail, Contacts & Calendars preferences because it doesn't work on an Intel-based Mac.

I updated my Mac to Mavericks and after that, I can't open the Mail, Contacts and Calendar preferences.
Every time I try, I get the following message:
"You can’t open Mail, Contacts & Calendars preferences because it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac."
I tried this workaround from the Mountain Lion thread (https://discussions.apple.com/message/21303574#21303574) but it didn't worked.
Further I deleted all files in the Library Preferences folder, but it didn't helped also.
    Can anyone help me please?

    Hi Michael,
I had the same problem. And I found a fix.
I noticed that on a different system running Mavericks without any problems, the preference pane isn't called 'Mail, Contacts & Calendars' anymore, it's now called 'Internet accounts'. The fact that it's still called by the old name on your system, means it somehow wasn't replaced while updating to Mavericks.
So the cure is pretty easy:
On a different Mavericks system, go to /System/Library/PreferencePanes/ and copy the file InternetAccounts.prefPane. Take it to the system you're trying to fix, and paste the prefPane file in the same directory. Reboot, and it should all work fine. At least it did in my case.
    Cheers
    Niels

    can;t open mail in safari

    Hello,
Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache.
Note: ''This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to.''
To clear cache and cookies do the following:
#Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.
#Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
#Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
#From the details list, check ''Cache'' and ''Cookies'' and uncheck everything else.
#Now click the ''Clear now'' button.
Further information can be found in the [[Clear your cache, history and other personal information in Firefox]] article.
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.

Hi Iv'e downloaded mountain lion but now can't open mail?

Office 2004 Applications Won't Work in Lion
You must have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite and will not work in Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
    NeoOffice
    Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
    Keynote - presentation
    Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)

    Hello tomzmem,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
This situation does sound very frustrating. I know that you have tried some great troubleshooting steps already and the issue remains unresolved. Have you forced the Mail application to close and then opened it back fresh? If not, this is the next troubleshooting step I would suggest. Please let me know if the issue remains unresolved.

  • Can't open mail or safari after update

I updated my software when the notice came up and after shutting down and restarting, I can't open mail or safari or itunes. The icons bounce as if starting and then nothing. Can anyone help me with this? I know very little about computers. I am writing this on a PC. (Yikes)

Hi cantfindwan, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
