Can't open Mail preferences 10.6.8

Never used the mail software and wanted to try it. I can open it but i can't open Preferences. It doesn't do anything if i click the menu or if i use the sortcut... I also have to force it quit everytime i close it.

Press "Shift+Command+U" from the Finder, then double-click the "Disk Utility" icon when the "Utilities" window opens.
Select the Mac hard drive icon in the left pane of the "Disk Utilities" window. Click the "First Aid" tab at the top of the right pane. Click the "Repair Disk Permissions" button at the bottom of the right pane. Mac OSX will read the permissions database, then begin repairing permissions. This could take several minutes.
Restart your system. If it doesn't solve your problem, you need to re-install your Mac OSX . Try to get a backup to be on the safe side.
Good luck

  • Can't open Mail preferences

Just noticed this yesterday. Wasn't happening last time I checked, has never happened before, and I've been running OSX since 10.2.
Mail's preferences simply won't open!! Tried cmd-, shortcut and Mail menu command. Either way I get the normal blue flash over "Mail" in the menubar .. and then nothing. I've tried relaunching the app several times, repaired permissions, returned to the computer after an overnight shutdown, tried replacing the prefs file (com.apple.mail.plist) with several backup copies spread over the past 6 weeks ... No go.
From scouring the forum there seem to have been instances of this behaviour bugging quite a few people several years ago under Tiger. Never happened to me then, but happening now under SL.
Anyone else seen this and/or have any suggestions? Thanks.
P.S. been a while since I ran DiskWarrior, so might just try that .. but not hopeful it will fix this.

    Now it gets more complicated.
First, restore your old preference file after quitting Mail.
If you have another user account set up, switch to it and see whether the problem exists in that account. If not, open System Preferences > Accounts and select the Guest account from the list. Select the checkbox to enable the account (you need to be an administrator to do this.) Close the preference pane. You should now be able to log into the Guest account by selecting it from the user-switching menu at the right end of the menu bar. There is no password. Launch Mail, go through the setup process with any data, and try to open the preferences. Regardless of whether it works or not, log out of the Guest account and go back to your own.
If you were able to reproduce the problem as a different user, then it lies in a faulty OS installation. Run the 10.6.6 combo installer and try again. Failing that, you'll have to do a clean install.
If you weren't able to reproduce the problem in the other account, then it lies in your home folder, and more investigation is needed.

  • Unable to open Mail Preferences, can't remove/add accounts.

Sorry I posted this under Tiger discussions as well, but it wasn't my intention. I am running Leopard now:
    - I upgraded to Leopard today. My mail application that I have been using all along has been Entourage, but decided to switch to Mail.
    - Setup walked me through and I configured another account (besides the .mac account created automatically).
    - I wanted to change settings of the newly configured account, but when I go to Mail->Preferences... NOTHING HAPPENS!
    - Tried reinstalling Mail from CD. Tried rebooting MAC. Tried removing and reinstalling again... nothing!
So I can't open Mail Preferences to modify existing accounts. What can I do?

    Ernie,
    Thanks again.
This is strange indeed! I can not do what you suggested. We must not be on the same page.
When I select the Mail pull down menu right under "About Mail" is the "Preferences" item. There are a series of periods behind it which usually indicates more options when the item is selected or highlighted. In this case nothing happens until it is selected at which you are taken to a "general" screen full of items with scroll through lists to select from. Accounts is not an item. Holding down the option key doesn't change the results at any point I tried.
My Mail version is 3.0 (912.1/912).
I may have to give up on Mail and go back to Entourage or thunderbird.

  • You can't open Mail, Contacts & Calendars preferences because it doesn't work on an Intel-based Mac.

I updated my Mac to Mavericks and after that, I can't open the Mail, Contacts and Calendar preferences.
Every time I try, I get the following message:
"You can’t open Mail, Contacts & Calendars preferences because it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac."
I tried this workaround from the Mountain Lion thread (https://discussions.apple.com/message/21303574#21303574) but it didn't worked.
Further I deleted all files in the Library Preferences folder, but it didn't helped also.
    Can anyone help me please?

    Hi Michael,
I had the same problem. And I found a fix.
I noticed that on a different system running Mavericks without any problems, the preference pane isn't called 'Mail, Contacts & Calendars' anymore, it's now called 'Internet accounts'. The fact that it's still called by the old name on your system, means it somehow wasn't replaced while updating to Mavericks.
So the cure is pretty easy:
On a different Mavericks system, go to /System/Library/PreferencePanes/ and copy the file InternetAccounts.prefPane. Take it to the system you're trying to fix, and paste the prefPane file in the same directory. Reboot, and it should all work fine. At least it did in my case.
    Cheers
    Niels

I had luckily  backed up 2 days before this update - so went to Time Machine - did restore - now good still - can't  open mail. CLick on Iconand get same messgae .
    Please help. Thank you

Thank you for the very clear basic instructions—helpful for a newbie.…Also my first screen shot !! I see that it does not have .App next to it
Most likely because you have Finder's preferences->Advanced->Show all filename extensions unchecked. Check it, log out, and back in and all the apps should display the .app extension.
Now, back to your problem. If you installed the Security Update 2012-004, it failed to update Mail to 4.6; thus, your problem. Manually DL it from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1586 and reinstall it.

  • Trying to open mail preferences in OS X 10.8.2 blocks mail application.

I'm currently working with OS X 10.8.2. Mail seems to work properly, but when I try to open mail preferences but nothing happens. I can only see the "rainbow wheel" and mail is blocked. I can only force mail's shutdown. Other applications wprks properly.
Could anybody help me? Tx a lot. Riccardo.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Can Not Open Mail CNOM

-The application Mail quit unexpectedly. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected. Click Relaunch to launch the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple.
The above error message appears after I attempt to open the Mail application. Recently the Mail icon was a question mark, however it was found but still clicking on it I can not open Mail. After attempting to click Relaunch twice in a row, during a third time the follow error message appears:
-Do you want to resent application settings for Mail? The application quit unexpectedly after itwas relaunched. Resetting the application settings may fix the problem. You will be givethe opportunity to restore your original settings when you quit the applications.
When I click Reset and Relaunch I am brought back the error mentioned I previously encountered first, ergo the whole problem beings again, and the same thing happens again when I click Relaunch.
When I click Ignore or Do Not Relaunch the application quits, of course. When I click Report the application sends a 'report' page.
Somebody please help me get my mail working again. Thank you.

    Really? Nobody has any idea?

  • Can't open keyboard/preferences in lion

    HI,
I've downloaded lion over the week-end.
Installation went ok but I am getting a few strange behaviors:
1- When selecting "shut down" from my account nothing happens. I have to first log out and then log out!!
2- When trying to access system preferences + keyboard I first get a message saying it has to restart the "system preference" to access the option. The system preference is then restarted (I note that at the top it now indicates "system preferences 32-bit") and then a pop up window says "you can't open Keyboard preferences because it doesn't work on an Intel-based MAC".
    I actually doubt that!!!
3- Last thing is that when installing xcode 4.1 the tool indicated at some point I had to close safari to continue installation. I did so but the installation did not continue. I had to restart the computer and reintall xcode (without safari opened) to get a successful installation.
I can survive with (1) & (3) but question (2) is really annoying as I can't customize my mac.
By the way I am using a macbook pro (2.53 GHz intel core 2 duo with lion (11A511).
    Any help would be welcome.
    Thx.

TextEdit found in your Applications folder will open Word documents. I have the same problem. come on Apple try sort it out

  • On 10.4.11 Mac Mail I get this: Mail cannot update your mailboxes because your home directory is full. You must free up space in your home folder before using Mail. Delete unnedded documents or move documents to another volume. I can't open mail.

On 10.4.11 iMac Mac Mail I get this message: "Mail cannot update your mailboxes because your home directory is full. You must free up space in your home folder before using Mail. Delete unneeded documents or move documents to another volume." I can't open mail to do this. I have reinstalled software but no effect. How do I get into Mail to delete?

Found this on the "more like this" Worked like a charm!
With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Go to Home > Library > Mail > Envelope Index. Move the Envelope Index file to the Desktop.
Launch Mail and you will be prompted to import mailboxes. Select OK and allow the import process to complete.
After confirming all mailboxes were successfully imported and available, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and old Envelope Index file from the Desktop and this should resolve the problem.

    Hi,
I check this issue in my environment, but cannot repro this issue.
Please check the following path to click the right cpl file:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\MLCFG32.CPL
If that works, you need check this registry path to see if it points a right path to the .cpl file:

I've been getting the error message "The disk you inserted was not readable by the computer". I can't open system preferences, disk utility, or Time Machine. I'm guessing it has something to do with my external hard drive, although it hasn't been touched lately, but I can't figure out how to solve the problem. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Thanks for your quick response. I had a look at your discussion... I tried it on a Windows machine and I thought that was compatible with ExFAT?
Therefore I need to attempt to use my external hard drive with a machine that boasts OS X 10.6.5 or above and then it should work?
    Thanks
