Can't open my pictures, but can see thumbnail

I have all of my pictures in iphoto and I can see the thumbnails. When I double click on the picture, it opens up in a big black and white exclamation point instead of showing me the picture. It also will not allow me to export the pictures. Any help out there?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto opens older pictures but not newer ones?

Can someone possibly help me with my problem. Somehow I've ended up with two iphoto applications. I don't know how this happened b/c I always thought I just had one iphoto application. In any event, out of the blue on Sunday when I clicked my iphoto icon the window opened up but the wheel with the white spokes just kept spinning around without showing my photos. I went online and it said to go into package contents and move the iphoto.lock or something like that to the desktop and then all of a sudden I found an application called iphoto (original) and that opened photos from 2008 to 2011. I then noticed there were two iphoto libraries listed under documents. One was called iPhoto Library (Original) and the other was called iPhoto Library. Even though I am unable to get iPhoto Library to open, when I look into it I can see thumbnails of my photographs downloaded from 2011 to present. Can someone help me open my iPhoto Library?

I have to leave for a cancer conference today and won't return until Sunday.
Then we'll miss each other. On Sunday I'll be away for a conference. But I'm sure, somebody else will be able to tell you, how to upgrade the library, once we know the versions.
To find the version number of the iPhoto versions,
    open the "Applications" folder.
Click the column view icon in the toolbar.
Scroll down to iPhoto. The version number is brow the iPhoto icon.
To find the version number of your MacOS X, click the Apple  in the upper left corner of the main menu bar.  Select "About this Mac" from the drop down menu. It will show you the version number in the "About" panel.

    Please help me

    Hi mariad91843143,
To enable the non-destructive workflow and the powerful features of Photoshop CC, the RAW image will need to be opened into Photoshop whilst, in the meantime, keeping our Lightroom changes so that we can work on them later. Instead of using the ‘Edit in Adobe Photoshop’ option in Lightroom – CMD +E (Mac) or CTRL +E (PC) – the option ‘Open as Smart Object in Photoshop’ will be used.

  • Can see thumbnails in Album but blank photo on opening single picture

I have just downloaded my latest photos from my memory card off my camera to the iPhoto suite. I have managed to get them all into an album and can see them all as thumbnails, however, with a random 25 % of photos when you open them the screen is blank and shows a black screen. This also happens if they are opened in a slideshow. In addition, the error means that I can't export the files and they are listed on the finder as 0MB file size. Is there anything that can be done to make them show up?
    Thanks

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. *Permissions in the Library* : Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. *Minor Database corruption*: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. *A Damaged Photo*: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. *A corrupted iPhoto Cache*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
    5. *A corrupted preference file*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    *If none of these help*:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Can see thumbnails but photos won't open

We have our iphoto library loaded on the shared directory, so that all 4 users can see it (me, my wife, my 2 sons).  We each have our own login profile, and all had sharing permissions turned on for iphoto.   For whatever reason, Iphoto cannot seem to handle this setup - it seems Iphoto isn't really set up for families / multi - users.  Odd, since iTunes does this fine.
For the past 10 months or so, since we got the mac, typically I download jpegs of cameras to the library, and everyone can see, open , use the photos.
Recently my son downloaded his camera while on his login, and although it seemed to download fine and the thumbnails are visible, the images will not open.  The images were deleted from the camera, and now seem lost.  I am looking for suggestions on any way those images might be recovered ?
I spent three hours at an Apple store today with the 'genius' guys and they couldn't figure it out either.  They recommended I move the library to an external drive which does not have permission requirements.  So I bought one and moved it with their help, and same result - those pictures downloaded by my son will not open for any user including his login even though they show up as albums and thumbnails, appear to be there.  He has lost 6 months of photos, is in tears about it, and I am unbelieveably frustrated.
It is astounding to me that Iphoto allows a download to appear to have worked but the images are not there.  It is also confounding how a new $1300 computer is not capable of handling a simple setup where one image database can be accessed and utilized by 4 users withut adding an additional hardware component.
Does anyone have any suggestions on saving those images ?

Terence - Thanks.  You are right and I was ranting - apologies.  It is indeed a software shortcoming, and my frustration stems from the fact that it was the 'Genius Bar' guys at Apple who recommended this approach and assisted me in setting it up, (the shared iphoto library) as I was totally new to the apple platform.  And honestly it worked fine for viewing, copying, and dragging images into other applications - like if one my kids want to drop a photo into a report for school or something.  The only problem seems to be downloading permissions.  You can apparently only download from one user profile.
But even more frustrating - when my son executed the download, the thumbnails showed up, no error message, but images aren't there.
The images that seem to be lost show up as thumbnails in the library, but when you try to open them you get the black screen with an exclaimation point.  Highlighting and trying a 'reveal in finder' only winds up showing the library.

  • HT201401 can see thumbnails, but can't see pictures when I tap the thumbnail

On the iphone 4 I can see the thumbnail in the camera roll, but I can't see the picture when I tap on the thumbnail.

    Hey there Delmi,
    Thank you for the question!
It sounds like you open the Camera Roll and see the image thumbnails, but when you tap them to view them larger, the image does not show at all. I have a few recommendations for this. First start by closing the open apps on the phone.
iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that restart the phone and re test the issue.
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If the issue persists, then I would backup your device to iTunes and then restore it:

  • Can see thumbnails of open tabs but cannot open them at all

Firefox upgraded itself on the weekend.
I have been visiting blogs through the Bloggers' Quilt Festival, which I'm participating in. I tried to leave comments but on the blogspot and blogger blogs was not able to. This morning I saw a bunch of extra thumbnail windows open in Firefox so I closed them, but now the whole of Firefox has shut on me. I can see two or three thumbnails and have a screenshot but I can't actually get them to open.
I saw the advice about starting Firefox in safe mode but that doesn't work from the thumbnails.
Really need help asap because I work from home and work depends on easy fast access that I depend on Firefox for

an alternative way to get into safemode (all other firefox windows have to be closed first): press windows-key + R and open:
    firefox.exe -safe-mode

  • I can see thumbnail but can't open psd file,photoshop 7

I have no idea to what is going on, but I did all this work and now that I try to reopen the psd file, I can't.
I don't see anything, no layer, no photo nothing.
I am using window xp. got the scratch setup on an external drive with plenty of space. got 4gof memory and plenty of processing power.
once again I can see the thumbnail but can't open the psd file.
    Thank you for your help.

I got it to work. I think my main problem was since my psd file crashed I was using existing pdf to save as psd. well that didn't go well with photoshop. Plus the fact my scratch was in an external location. Once I recreated the drawing and installed an additional hard-drive where I relocated the scratch file I was set to go. I now can save and reopen the file with no issues.
I would like to thank everyone who helped me with this issue.

  • IPhoto can see thumbnails but cannot get full pictures

My iPhoto library seems to be corrupted.
I can see all the thumbnails but when I click on some I get a triangular sign with an exclamation point.
    Others work.
Thinking that perhaps the iPhoto database was corrupted, I attempted to load an older time machine backup (mid July 2014), but Time Machine would not let me select the iPhoto directory. I can select my desktop ( as a test) but not my documents (very upsetting).
I did successfully restore the iPhoto App.
I have successfully restored my complete system twice with only minor problems. One was a permissions issue when I restored to a new MBP.
Anyway in both cases the iPhoto library stayed intact.
I would deal love to hear any suggestions that anyone might have to offer.
    Thanks
    Barry

    Hey bholtzkener,
It seems like you may need to rebuild your iPhoto database. This article has some helpful information for you regarding this procedure:

  • Can see thumbnails but can't see actually pics

Ok I have a really serious problem with iphoto. Every once in a while I will try to double click on a photo to view it but I will just get a white screen with the spinning thing like on startup. Usually I just delete the photo because it hasn’t happened to any important photo’s till now. All of the pics I took of my dog as a puppy are screwed up (as well as many others) The same thing happens to them. You can see the thumbnails but nothing more. I tried holding down apple, option control shift or whatever the combo is on iphoto startup and rebuilt the iphoto library but the same thingkeeps on happening. I tried dragging the thumbnails to the desktop and opening them in preview and I got this message “couldn’t open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format tht preview doesn’t recognize” I don’t know what to do. I really need these photo’s. oh an i have already done fsck, reset pram, repair permissions and all that jazz nuthin works. i'd like to know how to prevent this from happening and more importantly fix/repair the 'corrupt' photos because they are the only coppy of them that i have
all of the photo's were taken with a sony cybershot 3.2 megapixel camera and uploaded straight into iphoto

    BH:
Did you change the name of the files inside the iPhoto Library folder or the titles in the iPhoto window? If it's the former and you've done nothing else to the library here's a method you can use to get those files back and the library up and running normally. The "white" photos will be be back in their original roll but they should be back in the library.
How to recover those photos lost due to renaming in the Finder
1 - make a backup copy of your iPhoto Library folder
2 - do a search of just the iPhoto library folder with the following criteria:
File name contains ".jpg" and File size is less than 1 KB.
That will find all of those zero sized files that were created when iPhoto couldn't fine the originals.
3 - move those zero sized image files to the trash.
4 - now delete those "bad" photos from the iPhoto library using the normal method. (you don't have to but if you don't they will be recovered every time you do a library rebuild with the "recover orphaned photos" option selected).
5 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and when the rebuild menu comes up select the last option, "Recover orphaned photos in the iPhoto Library folder"
This will recover those renamed files and put then in a new roll. The only downside is that their titles in iPhoto will be "Roll xx-1, etc. You can do a Get Info on them, find the actual file name and change the title so they are the same.
So it can be done with a little work.

  • Downloaded 143 files, can't see photo's unless I click on edit.  Then I can see thumbnails on top, but can't view larger.  How do I recover them?  What did I do?  Never Happened before.

I downloaded 143 photo's.  The photo's were visible.  Tried to burn to CD.  When CD finished.  The photo's were blank in iphoto and I have deleted the originals from my camera.
If I click on one of the blank files in iPhoto and hit edit, I can see all of the photo's at the top of the screen in thumbnail size, but nothing appears in the large editing area.
Are my photo's lost?  How can I get them back?
    Thanks,
    Anthony

  • PSE Organizer - can see thumbnails but cant find originals

haveing issue - can see photos in the PSE Organizer thumbnails but cant find the originals on my pc - any help appreciated.

    Kihaku
Have you moved the photos recently, perhaps through Explorer?
If you do not know where the pictures are, you could find a filename and do a Search on your hard drive. Once you know where the pictures are, you could do a File>Reconnet Missing and link the thumbnail back to the picture.
The other question would be is there a CD icon in the thumbnails? This would indicate the original photo is stored off-line on a CD or DVD.

  • Can see thumbnails, but can't enlarge a photo

    Hi all,
Installed iPhoto11 yesterday. So far, I'm having a few issues that I can't seem to be able to fix. One of them is when enlarging a photo. I can see the thumbnail, but can't enlarge it. This is not happening to all photos. All photos that were taken "portrait" and were modified in iLife09 are working. All originals, in landscape mode, are not. I get the Grey Library Icon when trying to enlarge.
I've tried to delete my projects, albums, etc. but it didn't change the behaviours.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
