Can't open Numbers file on iPad

On my iPad 2, I duplicated a Numbers file and made edits. I then closed it and tried to open it minutes later. I saw the spinning "loading" icon for a split second and then nothing happens. I just remain on the list of files screen. Has anyone else come across this? It's very annoying.

I really warn to use "documents in the cloud" at all. If you like contact/mail/bookmark sync - this all works as advertised, but the iwork storage in cloud is a desaster that has deleted 100s of users work files.
Try to make backup copies locally, i.e. share with itunes to Mac/PC, and then turn icloud off for all iwork apps. It really is not worth the risk at all if our files vanish in the dust. Also Apple seems to be completely silent on this issue as well not providing help into recovering these lost files.

  • Can't open Numbers file after moving it back to Mac from Dropbox

Please help!  Can't open Numbers file after moving it back to iMac from Dropbox.   Says I need the newer version of Numbers each time I tried to open the file.  I am 100% sure that I had the newest version.   Spoke to the AppleCare guy and after doing the checks he is also sure that I had the latest version of Numbers and AppleCare can't help.  He suggested that maybe i should run it on a file repair program...any suggestion?... please help...

I've read reports of people having trouble when storing Numbers 3 documents on Dropbox.  I think it's related to the fact that they're not really "files."  They're "packages" that look like files. I had thought that Dropbox had cleared this up with their latest update. You should be on Dropbox version 2.4 or later.
If you have Time Machine you may have some luck going back in time and restoring the document from a previous version.
Storing Numbers documents on iCloud works much better, at least for me, and (unlike Dropbox) iCloud facilitates automatic syncing to other Macs and iOS devices signed into the same Apple ID.
Perhaps you could consider keeping Numbers documents in iCloud instead. iCloud is deeply integrated into the app, and now works well.

  • Can't open Numbers on my iPad

I have a file, created in excel and saved as a Numbers file on my MacBook Air.  I emailed that file to myself and tried to open it in Numbers on my iPad and I get an error, "File can't be imported, invalid file format".  Does anyone know what is causing this?

Go to the App Store, click on updates.
Also make sure the file you emailed is a Numbers file.

  • Can't open pages files on ipad in icloud.

I always synchronize my Pages files between my Mac Mini, Mac Book Pro and Ipad(1st generation) in icloud. Since last week it is not possible to open some files on my ipad in icloud. All files that have been opened on my Mac Mini can not be opened on the ipad. What can I do?

So...I have played with it more.  Simple documents work most of the time.  But if I take a more complex doc to Pages, edit it and save it as a Word doc then trasnfer it back to  PC or Mac it will fail to open.
Would be nice if I could trust the App.  WIll mess more with it but it is very frustrating.

  • Can't open Pages files from iPad in Word 2010 on PC

I have not been able to open any files created on my iPad (iOS 6.0.1) with Apple Pages in Microsoft Word 2010 on Windows XP Pro and hope someone can suggest a solution.
I am emailing the files as attachments (.docx files)  When I try to open the file on my PC, I get an error message when I open them in Word that says:
Word was unable to read this docuemnt.
Try one or more of the following:
    * Open and repair the file.
    * Open the file with the Text Recovery converter. (C:\Users\...\name of file.doc)
In addition, I tried to open the .docx file in Openoffice.org 3.4.1 and it got a read error.
Any suggestions? Is there any kind of plug-in/add-in for MS Word 2010 that would correct the problem?
    Thanks,
    Rich
Additional: Pages was purchased today from the App store; iPad is Gen4 a couple days old

  • Can't Open Numbers file, wrong format

Hello I have Numbers version 3.2
I have a friend who has created 3 numbers spreadsheets.  I can not open them on my mac.
On my Mac with mavericks , I get error can't open file. I checked console and got detailed message "8/13/14 8:04:54.759 PM Numbers[284]: *** Assertion failure #2: -[TSAImportController prepareForImportDisplayingProgress:] TSAImportController.m:292 Could not create importer for document at /Users/bill/Desktop/2014 Conference Spreadsheet.numbers."
    8/13/14 8:57:17.690 PM Numbers[284]: *** Assertion failure #3: -[TSAImportController prepareForImportDisplayingProgress:] TSAImportController.m:292 Could not create importer for document at /Users/bill/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Mail Downloads/A527BF91-859C-4348-881E-9F90D8F5EFBC/2013 990.numbers.
What does this indicate, they can take the same file and make it an Xcel and I can open.
I tried to move the file over to the cloud and open , and I get error 'invalid file format"  what is going on here ?

Update #3 .. I tried to install an old version of numbers.  Interesting enough files still error, but they error with the error reported on iCloud.  "could not open file, wrong format" console : 8/14/14 8:23:49.220 PM Numbers[425]: Error opening document in -[SFAppApplicationDelegate(Private) doCoordinatedReadWorkForURL:]. • Can't open numbers files in latest version

I'm running the latest version of numbers in Mavericks and iOs7. I was able to open a file yesterday, but now get this message "You need a newer version of Numbers to open this spreadsheet." I've double checked and all the versions are the latest. - it's a numbers file now, so I can't open it in excel either.

    Hi marion0,
A lot of people don't realize that after they download Numbers 3.0 the old Numbers 2.3 is still on their machine. Numbers 3.0 is in the Applications folder and Numbers 2.3 is in a subfolder within Applications called iWork '09 or similar. The icons are similar and it is very easy to get confused.  Here the old version is on top, the new version on the bottom. (They can run at the same time.)
If you had an icon on your dock before downloading Numbers 3.0 then it's probably still pointing to the old version. So if you like clicking on the dock to open an application and then open documents from within the application you need to drag the icon for the new Numbers 3.0 to the dock.  Otherwise, you can always right-click on a document in Finder as Badunit suggests and choose which Numbers version you want via Open With.

  • Can't open numbers files

    Hello,
I've been using numbers for a week or so, and have made lots of numbers files, but today, none of them will open. I have had some problems with my Imac and have had to reload lots of stuff, and restore from back up etc, could this have cause the problem?
The numbers icon is in my dock, when I try to open the file from finder, it flashes but doesn't open. Sometimes the inspector opens, but not the document. I've also tried open recent from file within numbers and get the same problem.
    Any ideas? Thanks Sally

Try to open them from an other user account.
If it behaves well we will know that the oddity is linked to your main user account.
If it's that, try to trash the preferences file :
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Numbers. plist

    Thoughts?
It's time to understand that a computer is not a perfect tool.
Saving a file is not sufficient if we wish to play safety.
Good practice is to save frequently (every ten minutes) under different names.
Given that, if the save made at time x proves to be corrupted, we may grab the copy made at x-10 minutes.
I'm surprised by the message described.
Isn't it saying that something is missing ?
As you are in a forum dedicated to Numbers '08, it's normal that you are using Numbers '08.
Have you tried Numbers '09 with this file ?

  • Can't open pages files on iPad

Right, I have my shiny new ipad but have a problem. I can open word documents fine, but when I try and open a .pages file it just comes up with the error "Error load document". This happens if I access a file over email or MobileMe. Why is this, as the MS Office docs open up fine in pages?

  • Can't open Ideas file on iPad

I use Ideas on my iPad and have been working on a large file. I closed the file to the "organize ideas" page but now I can't reopen it. (When I click on the file, it looks like it is trying to open, but goes to a blank screen and closes the application.) Are there size limitations on Ideas files? How do you adjust settings for the ideas app on the iPad?

Please try rebooting your iPad to see if freeing up memory resolves this.

  • Can't open numbers on my iPhone 5S and iPad mini (1st Gen.) after updating to the new version 2.0.1. Please help!

Okay , you should only delete EMPTY DUPLICATED folders, not preview folders or any others. I would put them all back. Then just delete any DUPLICATED EMPTY folders, do not disturb any other folders. On iOS switch off DOCUMENTS AND DATA under ICLOUD in SETTINGS. Do this on all iOS devices not just the one. Once deleted DUPLICATE FOLDERS on the mac in MOBILE FOLDERS then exit the LIBRARY. Open PAGES on your MAC and view folders on icloud. Check everything is all there as expected. If okay then DELETE and re-install PAGES app on iOS - THEN switch on DATA and DOCUMENTS in ICLOUD. Now open PAGES. If you have Time Machine on you can recover any 'lost' doc files and restore them from your mac from pages application. Try the process again and do not disturb any folders other than ones I mentioned as this is the system files LIBRARY. It is not a place to be over zealous in moving, altering and deleting folders and files. Take care please.

  • I can't open attachments on my iPad 2.  I have downloaded the 8.0.2 software update.  I can't open jpgs, PDFs, docs. or movie files now.

I can't open attachments on my iPad 2t and I can't open jpgs, PDFs, docs. or movie files now.

Obviously, you are talking about the mail app, so force close the mail app and reset your iPad. If that fails, reset all settings.
In order to close apps, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
When you reset all settings, you will not lose any data, but most of the device settings will have to be entered in the settings app again. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all Settings.

  • Can't open mov files on my ipad

Since one of the last IOS updates, I can't open Mov files sent from my own IPhone  via email.
I have had a new ipad swapped under warranty, and have reloaded all software from scratch.
When I get the email with the video file. The file is an attachment, I click the file, it downloads, then when I click it to view the video I get a white screen with the file name in the middle and the words quick time movie. And nothing happens

You should download VLC and try viewing the .mov file with it - for troubleshooting.
