Can't open Pagemaker 7 in InDesign 2

Hi,
When I try to open a Pagemaker 7 file in Adobe InDesign 2, I keep getting a message that says "Cannot open Adobe inDesign may not support the file format or a plug-in may be missing.
The reason I am trying to convert the file to InDesign is because my Pagemaker won't make a pdf. It keeps telling me it can't connect to the distiller.
Thank you for any help!
J

You're probably better off fixing your Pagemaker / Acrobat installation unless you're planning to move to Indesign permanently. Even if you could do this, you'd probably have to fix the translated file. I assume you were able to create PDFs from Pagemaker before?

  • Can't open Pagemaker files in InDesign Cs2

In the past i could usually open any Pagemaker 6 or 6.5 file in InDesign CS2. However this doesn't work anymore. I get a message o the screen telling me the file is corrupt and can't be opened. ( i can't really post the original message i get as it is in german).
This happens for any Pagemaker 6 or 6.5 file i have in my repository (and there are still many left so i had tried several ones from different dates and PM Versions)
As a first aid I tried to reinstall InDesign CS2 from the original discs. I uninstalledit before and did a restart of the Machine before i reinstalled it.
I use a Windows XP baesed system.
Does anyone have any idea on what i could try to get that back to work?

  • Can I open .pmd files in indesign? And how? Since indesign is a "substitute" for PageMaker it should/must be possible, but I don't know how to do it

Can I open .pmd files in indesign? And how? Since indesign is a "substitute" for PageMaker it should/must be possible, but I don't know how to do it

CS6 was the last version capable of opening Pagemaker files. It's included with Cloud subscriptions, so if you don't have it installed (or an earlier version) you can download it from your cloud subscription.
To open them you use File > Open..., but the quality of conversion can range between nearly perfect and total garbage, depending on the PM file and the status of links (unembed images before trying to convert).

  • New problem opening Pagemaker files with InDesign

I have quite a lot of archive files made in Pagemaker 6 and 7 and now use InDesign CS2. Until recently I could open pagemaker files from InDesign then save them as InDesign files and away I went.
But now I am just getting an error message saying the document is damaged and cannot be recovered. First off I thought it really was a damaged document but then realised all my old .pmds were saying the same.
Is there a known issue maybe with a recent upgrade of InDesign or something?
I would really love to be able to access my old pmds!!
    Thanks in anticipation.

Yes Joel you're right - XP and recently installed SP3.
Just pondering the best way forward.
I'm responsible for the IT for a small charity with 8 staff members.
I have Master Suite CS3 and use a variety of the programmes but the other staff members are only using InDesign and MS Office.
We're not a high end design set up but producing all the sort of leaflets, posters bits and pieces that we need day to day.
Decided to upgrade to Office 2010 and to do that I had to install SP3.
Stuck with ID2 for everyone else (and went to great lengths to buy some extra licenses to do so) because opening an ID2 file with ID3 creates a new file which is a big nuisance and it's expensive to upgrade across the board (even with charities having access to educational licensing concessions).
Fact of life is we do tend to have quite long-lived files and I will go on wanting to open pagemaker ones for some time to come.
I probably only want to convert a pmd once a month I guess - it's just suddenly a huge nuisance not to be able to do those few ...
I can't roll back to SP2 because of Office 2010.
I could re-set one workstation wtih XP2, Office XP and InDesign CS2 purely to be able to convert pmds. Again, nuisance and ties up a licence on a little-used machine.
I could bite the bullet and move everyone over to InDesign CS3 - will I definitely be able to open pmds from there?
Ah, just thought - I have an ID3 licence but not loaded on my computer. If I load that and use it just for opening pmds then export them for backwards compatibility with ID2 like this http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/InDesign/5.0/help.html?content=WSa285fff53dea4f86173837510 01ea8cb3f-6d4d.html will I then be a happy bunny?
Would be glad of expert comment before I start faffing about!
    Thanks

  • You can't open the application "Adobe InDesign CS4" because it is not supported on this architecture"

A day or two ago I went through installing Adobe InDesign CS4 on Leopard OS X.5.8.  After what appears to be a successful installati
on, in launching InDesign CS4 the message " You can't open the application "Adobe InDesign CS4" because it is not supported on this
architecture" comes up".  Calling in to support and speaking with the agent who read through previous posts, suggested to me that I
should try the same fix that has been suggested when I ran across an error when installing Adobe InDesign CS4 on another separate ha
rd drive externally connected to this computer running Snow Leopard OS X.6.1 for the error reading: "Damaged &/or incomplete install
ation" when launching afterwards.  The support technician told me to first delete with the uninstall Adobe InDesign CS4, InDesign.
Following this I am told to run the CS4 Cleanup Utility.  I restart the computer each and every time after running each of the utili
ties.  Now I am told to install InDesign as a trial version from the DVD and after installation to go ahead & enter the serial numbe
    r.  When launching InDesign CS4 after installation got back the same error as before: "You can't open the application "Adobe InDesig
n CS4" because it is not supported on this architecture" comes up".  Followed KB404711 article and no success.  What else can be don
    e to fix this issue?
This morning contacted Adobe Support regarding this response:
After having a detailed reserach on your issue i acme to the conclusion
that the problem you are having is not related to Adobe software but its
in fact related to your MAC version ( OSX-5.8). While reseraching your
    issue i came across
to many forums where a lot of postings were about the similar error but
with different products the only comon thing was all the Errors were
with Mac machine , also when you check the system requirements  for
    Adobe Indesign Cs4
by going to the following link
    http://www.adobe.com/products/indesign/systemreqs/?promoid=DRHXE  you
will find the Mac OS version supported are from Mac OS X
v10.4.11–10.5.4. but we do support Snow Leoprad , so i would like
to advise to you to either contact your system manufacturer or upgrade
to Snow Leopard ( mac os x 10.6)
I have been told that my case is being sent to Level 2 agents and that it can take 24-48 hours for a response.  In the meantime I decided to see what the Support Forums can do for me.  Until then I am down.  Thanks for the help.

In the application folder there is a folder 'Adobe InDesign CS4' within which there is just the application file. I would expect there should be more file there??
I've un-installed and installed again - still the same.
Even downloaded the dmg again and done thwe whole thing over again.

  • ID Install -  Can't open the application Adobe InDesign CS6 because it may be damaged or incomplete.

Trying to install inDesign CS6 on my imac. But everytime I try at end of install I either get a problem with install error, or if it does show up in my applications folder, it has a "no" sign and when clicked I get:
"You can't open the application Adobe InDesign CS6 because it may be damaged or incomplete."
Need help, Im a freelance desktop publisher and need this to work!

After I deleted Adobe File Manager because it was always popping up annoyingly, I got a similar "damaged application - reinstall" message. However, InDesign didn't seem to be affected. Nevertheless, I reinstalled AFM, and fixed the problem, except for the annoying appearances of AFM.
If it's not present on your system, you can search Google for "download adobe application manager mac" without quotes, to download and install it.

  • You can't open the application "Adobe InDesign CC 2014" because it is not responding.

For some reason InDesign has decided to stop responding. Acts like it wants to launch but then does nothing. When I try to launch it from the Finder rather than the Dock, I receive this message:
You can’t open the application “Adobe InDesign CC 2014” because it is not responding.
    Please advise.

Wild guess here, but the installers are known to fail to set the correct permissions on the preference folders. See Cant launch new inDesign CC | Adobe Community  and substitute Version 10 where you see Version 9.

I second LibreOffice as it's the most recent fork, however NeoOffice and OpenOffice will also work.
Just say No money to Redmond!
Also the old Ready Set Go! will be having a Lion version out soon.
It's a low cost page layout program (like Indesign but without the high price) and can make booklets etc better, import the excel grpahics from LibreOffice.

  • How can I open P65 files in InDesign CC 2014?

I have a folder of P65 files I need to open, but InDesign CC 2014 can't open them.  Is there still a PageMaker plug-in like there used to be in previous versions to do this?

  • Can't open Pagemaker 6.5 files in ID CS2 - Vista

I was running ID CS2 on a Windows XP Pro system and had no problems opening Pagemaker 6.5 files. That system recently suffered a processor demise that affected the motherboard and forced me to start over with a new system that's now running Vista Home Premium. All of the programs I use loaded fine on Vista except Pagemaker 6.5. When I try to load it, I get a message saying it's not compatible. So I thought, OK, I'll simply open the Pagemaker files in In Design as I've done in the past and resave them. However, every file I've attempted to open gives me an error message saying the files are damaged and can't be opened. I know none of the files are damaged because I'd recently opened many of the same files in Pagemaker before the other system crashed. BTW, all of the Pagemaker files are on external drives so couldn't have been affected by the crash.
Any ideas how I can get around this?

Thanks, Bob. I have another issue that I can't find any specifics on in the forum.
Do you know why Arial Narrow fonts aren't available in the InDesign or Photoshop font list? I've always used these fonts with no problems in XP Pro, but since going to Vista, they don't show up. They're listed in the Windows font folder. The only one that shows up in InDesign and Photoshop is Arial regular. Arial Narrow shows up and is available in Word and other programs but not Adobe.

  • Can't Open PMD Files in InDesign CS5

Prior to purchasing CS5 with InDesign, I understood from the Adobe website that PMD (Pagemaker 7.0) files could be opened or imported with InDesign. Now that I have it installed, the PMD files are grayed-out when I try to open a file. Is there a different process to import a PMD file?
Here is one of the references:

I've never created anything in InDesign, because I just installed it this morning.
You might want to check out one of the most recommended InDesign starters' guides: Sandee Cohen's Visual QuickStart Guide.

To open these documents you MUST upgrade to a later version.
I don't know from which version your file comes, at least CS6, but could also be CC or CC 2014.
Or ask to get an IDML, but an IDML workflow might change the document.

  • Error Message Opening PageMaker file in InDesign CS2

I'm using Windows Vista with Adobe CS2, the educational version.
When I try to open any previous Pagemaker files 6.5 and earlier, I get an error message that says the Pagemaker file is seriously damaged and cannot be opened. It happens with all PageMaker files I try to open.
This is a new HP computer and I used to have PageMaker 6.5 and InDesign CS 1.5 working fine on the old computer. Do I have to have PageMaker installed on this computer? I've tried clicking on the file to open it and from Indesign with file open. Any ideas?!

Since installing XP SP3 in addition to being unable to open Pagemaker 7 files in Indesign CS I now find I cannot open Indesign again if I close it. I have to reboot XP for a fresh start.
Also Illustrator CS opens only to present a box "Could not complete operation" and then closes. There are no problems then in opening it a second time, except it takes the usual significant time to start.
Are these symptoms of the same problem with SP3 and the Adobe software. It is disappointing to see people say neither Adobe or Redmond are at all interested.
