Can't open photos in iPhoto after upgrade to 9.5

After upgrading to iphoto 9.5 I can no longer open albums, events or photos.  The photos appear in thumbnail version only.  Doesn't help to reboot iphoto or the whole Mavericks.
Is there a fix, or is this a bug?

Back up.
Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7 or later: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

Can't open old Numbers spreadsheet after upgrading Mac to Yosemite. Error message says it should first be upgraded to Numbers 09 but doesn't provide method to do so?  Help?

There is a chance the spreadsheets were made with a Numbers or AppleWorks version so old that it's not compatible anymore with the latest Numbers version (yes this can happen)

  • Cannot email photos from iPhoto after upgrade to 10.8

After upgrading to 10.8, I have not been able to successfully eamil photos from iPhoto. I can select the photos, click the email icon, and have Mail open with the photos attached (as expected). But the send button is grayed out, and the newly created message window cannot be closed. To get rid of the unsendable email, I have to quit or force shut down Mail, then reopen Mail and manually delete the email from Drafts.
Has anyone else run into this issue?

As Larry suggested go into iPhoto's Accounts preference pane and make sure your email account information is correct. If you joined iCloud that is a must.

  • Can't open external Firewire disk after upgrade to Leopard

I recently upgraded a PowerBook G4 from 10.4.11(?) to 10.5.5. Now I cannot open its external disk, a LaCie 400 GB Firewire disk, model number 300925, like this: http://www.amazon.com/Lacie-400GB-7200Rpm-Firewire-300925/dp/B00066989Mreport
The disk's icon appears on the desktop after it is plugged in. After double clicking to open it, the pinwheel cursor spins for a while, then Finder appears to restart, redrawing the desktop. When I have the Activity Monitor open during this, I see a process called ReportCrash run for a while before the Finder reset.
Does anyone recognize this symptom? Is there a way to see what is being reported by ReportCrash?

The Genius was skeptical that this was a problem between Leopard and a given disk. Indeed his first test was to boot my laptop from a clean install of Leopard on his own external FireWire drive. Running this way I had no problem opening my external disk from my laptop, running his fresh copy of OSX 10.5.something.
His theory was that something leftover in my configuration files (in /Library/Preferences) from a previous OS was causing the Finder crash while opening a FireWire disk under Leopard. (Since this machine is four years old, there has been a lot of opportunities for kruft to collect.) His suggestion was do a backup (complicated by the fact that I can't open my backup disk, d'oh!) then to do a clean install of Leopard, and then copy back my user folder.
I wish there was a smaller hammer I could use, like setting aside some magic .plist file... Any hints?

  • Can't open external hard drive after upgrading to photos 9.6

I know there have been other variations to this question but mine's a bit different and I didn't find a conversation about this yet:
I've always backed up all my pictures on an external hard drive (Seagate, standard, works with all computers). After I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1 and therefore iPhotos 9.6, I haven't been able to access them at all. I'm trying not to panic and am wondering what I can do. There's no way that the upgrade DELETED everything on my hard drive, right?!? Checking the back-up (i.e., Time Machine) on my laptop doesn't help in this case because none of the photos were there in the first place. Please help!
    MacBook (13-inch, Late 2009)
Processor 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

It is powered (the light is on).  I was uploading photos from the drive yesterday, so it worked perfectly fine before the upgrade to 10.6.8 (which I did during the night).  Is there anything else to try before I move it to another computer to see if it works?  Again, thanks.

  • Lost my photos from iPhoto after upgrading 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard and then to Yosemite.

I just bought Snow Leopard to upgrade my iMac from 2009. It was running OS 10.5.8. I ran all the updates for 10.6.8 before I went ahead and download Yosemite. My iPhotos won't open, I downloaded the "iPhoto upgrader" from the apple website and it did nothing to remedy the problem. I cannot retrieve my photos and I'm panicking. I've read other posts of people "deleting" the iPhotos app and re-installing it, but the Mac App Store doesn't seem to have iPhoto as a downloadable app anymore. Can anyone please help me retrieve my photos? This is the only place I have the photos and I'm afraid I won't see them again. I also just used the iPhotos app that my iMac and came with because I didn't buy it separately, so there is no installation disk either.

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928
One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • Can't open photos on iPhoto

Events, and thumbnails for each picture can be seen on iPhoto, but the files can't be opened..."the volume cannot be found". It's only happening to the two or three most recent events, older pictures are still available.

When you open an older iLibrary you get a warning that it must be upgraded and that once it is upgraded previous versions of iPhoto can not access it - if you did this and accepted the upgrade then your options are to restore that library from your backup, upgrade the Mac mini to that same version as your MBA or to start over and create a new library from your original photos
You can not use the laptop software to update other systems (you did not purchase it - it was included with the hardware) - if you purchase software from the App store you can use it on multiple systems that use the same Apple ID
And of course we are speaking of a $15.00 purchase here

  • Help! Tampered with files-can't open photos in iPhoto any longer

I was doing some stuff with my Photo folders in the Finder, accidentaly deleted some and even after dragging them out of the trash I can't view my photos in the iPhoto anymore. What do I do? All the pictures are still in the Finder folders but iPhoto says its library is empty and it won't import any pictures from Finder. How do I restore them? Please Help!!

    Hi grimus,
See if creating a new library will help get your photos back into iPhoto.
    Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
    Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and highlight it in the window, then click the "open" button.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
    This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
    Good luck!

  • Can´t open photos in iphoto

I see all of my pictures, but when I try to open a picture in iphoto I only get a exclamation up!!....     what can I do and fix it?

That exclamation mark is an indication that the file path/link between the thumbnail and the original file has been broken. Try the following
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
iPhoto 8 (09) and earlier- run the options indicated
iPhoto 9 (11) and later- run  Option #4 to Rebuild Database.  If necessary repeat with Option #1, Repair Permissions.

  • HT5251 Can't import AVCHD into iPhoto after upgrade

I created a new iPhoto library after doing the upgrade and tried all the suggested methods for importing my avchd folders and it didn't work! Am I missing something? The quicker they dump avchd the better!

I have the same problem with iPhoto 9.3's advertised ability to import AVCHD videos, and I also carefully followed Apple's instructions. (I am using the latest version of Mac OS X too; 10.7.4.) I get lots of "unreadable files" due to "unrecognized format", even with MTS files.
In addition, Apple's instructions imply that the camera should either mount and allow AVCHD movies to be imported in the usual way, or not mount at all, in which case Apple's instructions for copying appropriate folders should be followed. However, my Panasonic FZ150 mounted normally, but no AVCHD movies showed in the list to be imported.
I reported this to Apple via "Provide iPhoto Feedback" in the iPhoto menu.
Has anyone got this to work with the publicly-released version of iPhoto 9.3?

  • Cannot open and update IPhoto after upgrading to OXYosemite

From the App store, I downloaded and installed OXYosemite. There are 2 more updates available: iPhoto and iMovie. When I try to upload them, the notice I get is "Update Unavailable with This Apple ID  This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled."
I have 2 apple IDs when I inquire about my ids. Signing in App Store with either of them, doesn't resolve the problem. I get the same notice. iTunes, Mac, mobile downloads, all use the same apple IP, only for the computer downloads from App Store isn't working.
    What should I do?
    Thanks, Sev

I have the same problem and can't find out how to correct it.  Unable to update iPhoto or iMovie .. I get the same message as above user.  Help!

  • Can I delete photos from iPhoto after importing them to an external hard drive?

For a while my family has been experiencing extreme slowness on our early 2008 iMac running OS X Lion.  We tried many different ways to speed it up.  I recently bought a new external hard-drive and was going to put some of our media on the hard-drive.  Is it possible that I would be able to put my photos, videos, and music onto the hard-drive and delete them from my Mac to possibly speed it up.  Also is there is any other possible way to speed it up?

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Can't open my recent library after upgrading to iTunes 10.4

I did a bunch of requested software updates and apparently the new version of iTunes won't recognize my library on an external drive. It upgrade the one on my hard drive but wont let me access the one on the external drive where my monster library exists. How can I get this to be recogonized?

the library file may be corrupted.
    you could try this:
How to re-create your iTunes library and playlists
    edit:
before you do that, try just selecting the iTunes folder (not the library file inside it).
