Can't open .ppt files in MS Powerpoint for Mac

I recently upgarded to OSX Maveriks 10.9.1 and now have Mail 7.1.
I am receiving .ppt files as email attachments and I want them to open in Micorsoft Powerpoint by default (I have Office for Mac installed). Currently it opens in Keynote and I don't want that to happen. Before I installed Mavericks i was able to do this and opened .ppt files in Keynote only if I wanted to.
Hope I have articulated the problem well and loo fwd to solutions.
Thanks
Rach

Hey Rach0k,
Thanks for the question. You can configure which application will open .ppt documents by following these steps:
OS X Mavericks: Choose an app to open a document
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14279
Permanently change the document’s app
1. Select the document, then choose File > Get Info.
2. In the Info window, click the triangle next to “Open with” to expand the section.
3. Choose an app from the pop-up menu, or choose Other to locate a different app on your Mac. To download and install a new app, choose App Store.
4. If you want to use that app to open all documents of the same type as the current document and created by the same app, click Change All.
Thanks,
Matt M.

  • Hi, I cannot open nef files in elements 4 for mac

    Hi,
I cannot open nef files in elements 4 for mac.

For the D3000 you need version 7 or higher. PSE4 is too old.
You would need to download the converter to change NEF to DNG to open them in PSE4

  • How can I open PPT files on my mac?

I have a MacBook Pro and I was sent some PPT files and want to access them. What do I need to use/download to open them. Thanks in advance. Tom

A 'PPT' file is a Microsoft Powerpoint document. You can open them with PowerPoint for Mac, OpenOffice (and derivatives NeoOffice, LibreOffice, and Oracle Office), Apple Keynote, and Google Docs.
Open Office can be downloaded from OpenOffice.org and it is free.
Google Docs is web-based office suite. While it's a little awkward, it will permit you to import PPT presentations.
Most of them do a good job, but each will fall down with certain types of content. If the presentation contains ActiveX controls, they won't work on the Mac. Macros won't tend to work in anything but PowerPoint itself. Your mileage will vary on audio/video and embedded web content. There are also differences in transitions and animation between products that give peculiar results when going from one to the other.
If the presentation is a fairly typical one, however, all of the above will do a fair job of displaying it.

  • Movie files embedded in Powerpoint for Mac 2011 play audio, but only show black (no video).

I'm trying to embed a video in a presentation using Powerpoint for Mac 2011.  It successfully imports the video, but when I try to play the video in the slide it only plays the audio and black (no video).  I have tried .mov and .wmv files and neither works.  I have Flip4Mac on the machine which is a MacBook Pro 15", if that makes any difference.  The video in either format plays outside of the Powerpoint presentation and if I send the presentation to another MacBook Pro the video in the slide plays no problem.  Anyone have any ideas other than not using a Microsoft product on a Mac?

I suggest you post your question on Microsoft's own forums for their Mac products, as it's their software you're having issues with:

  • Can't open .ppt file: "out of memory" error on Mavericks

    Hello,
I have a couple of .ppt files that can't open/import in keynote v5.3. It says "import error: out of memory". The files are pretty small, 500kb to 8mb, no videos or music, only images and plain text. I have dozens of free gb.
This error started popping out after I updated to Mavericks a few days ago.
Keynote works fine with other .ppt.
The .ppt can be opened in Power Point (in a Windows PC, I don't have it installed) and with Previews.
I read that if I update to the new iWork the old version is kept in a separate folder. Do you confirm that I can still use both the old and the new version?
What can I do about that?
    Thanks for your help.

This error is usually caused by a corrupt ppt file or an incompatible font.
A quick work around is to recreate the presentation in Keynote from scratch using the images copied from the original.

  • Can't open MOV files in FCP: "Searching for movie data in file..."

I know this has been posted before, but none of them seem to match up to what I'm all of a sudden dealing with. I have 4 MOV files that I'm converting to WMV. Movie 1 & 2 exported fine. Now, however, any time I try to open another MOV file, I get an error that it's "Searching for movie data in file..." and the file name is ALWAYS the same. The weird thing is, the file it's looking for is none of the 4 movies I'm working with. So how did the first two work and this pop out of nowhere??
I have cleared out the render cache. Dumped all the cache and prefs files I can find, etc. Restarted the machine. Started FCP with the Option key held down.
I've searched everywhere, but people usually seem to come across this error while opening FCP (I'm running 6.0.6). This only happens when I open a MOV file (oddly, I can open WMV files in FCP without issue).
    HELP!

So, I open the movies in QT and the EXACT same thing is happening. So it appears the guy who created the videos did something when he was making them (probably made a reference files along the way). I'm having him re-export the MOV files.
So, it's not a FCP issue.....

  • Can't open Word file with password on my Mac

I have a Microsoft Office Word 2007 file with a password from my old computer, and when I try to put it on my new Mac all I get is a bunch of "EncryptedPackage" and random symbols through the pages. I do not have my old computer anymore, neither do I have access to any PC, so how could I decode this message so I can see the content?

by the way i do not have Office on my Mac
If the document was locked and password-protected in Word on the Windows system, I don't know of any way to unlock it without having a copy of Word on the Mac unless perhaps OpenOffice.org will open it. TextEdit and Pages will not (unless I've missed something).

  • How to open .ppt file from email?

Can i open .ppt file on my iphone? I've got that file on email.

    Ansuz82,
Correct, the User's Guide lists the supported formats on Page 117:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/iPhoneUserGuide.pdf
A quote of the appropriate section (as appears on Feb 9, 2008) is:
*If you can’t open an attachment in an email*
The file type may not be supported. iPhone supports the following email attachment
    file formats:
    • .c, .cpp, .diff, .doc, .docx, .h, .hpp, .htm, .html, .m, .mm, .patch, .pdf, .txt, .xls, .xlsx

  • Office for Mac 2011 - can't open old files

I am currently on Mac OS X v10.6.8.  I recently installed Office for Mac 2011.  I cannot open some of my old files.  I think the ones that use the old file names, e.g. .doc and .xls, rather than .docx and .xlsx.
Can anyone explain how I can open these files in my Office for Mac 2011?
    Many thanks!

The free LibreOffice will open them, and it's the most cross platform office program (Linux, OS X and Windows versions)

  • Embedding YouTube video into PowerPoint for Mac

How can one embed a YouTube video into PowerPoint for Mac 2010?  The video tutorials do not show the same Power Point (for Mac) that I'm using.  Even if I can just save (and retrieve) the file I just might be able to convert it to an MP4 for YouTube.  I've tried keepvid and it wants a valid file format.  The default is a text which doesn't work.  I've spent about 8 hours over the past 2 days trying to figure it out.  HELP!!!!!!

For the D600 NEF's you have two alternatives: (1) Upgrade to PSE 11. (2) Download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)  Windows download click here DNG Converter 7.3  Mac download click here DNG Converter 7.3  You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial: You Tube click here for DNG Converter tutorial

  • StarOffice Impress open .PPT files in IE

Is there a way to get IE to open .PPT files in Impress by default? I know that on a computer with PowerPoint installed, when you click on a .PPT file on the Internet, it will give you the choice to open the file in PowerPoint. This also works with Word and .DOC files. However, even though I have my computer configured to have Impress open .PPT files by default, it does not do so in Internet Explorer. In fact, "Open" isn't even a choice. How can I enable this setting? All the normal methods don't seem to work.
    Thanks,
    Kim

    Hi,
Explorer is used by default for displaying. If you want to edit it, for the purpose of security, KM doesn't allow opening with powerpoint. If you want to do editing, check this out.

Or you can check with portal drive. That would show up with windows explorer. That may serve your purpose.
I would also like to hear more from KM experts. Please wait and check for more replies.

  • Opening PPT files

Is there a way to open PPT. files with out iWork or Powerpoint?

    HI Craig,
    AppleWorks won't open them.
MS does offer a free Power Point viewer for Macintosh, which you can download from the Microsoft site.
A better choice might be the open source NeoOffice suite, available for free download. It will open and save .pps documents as well as documents from the other MS Office components, Word and Excel.

  • "Could not open ppt file"

    Hello all,
I need a little help with an importing problem. I've used
Captivate for about 1 year and a half and gotten to be pretty
strong in my knowledge but this one i just can't seem to figure
out. I created several captivate projects with no problem using my
laptop and Vista as my OS, I am also running Office 2007.
Well, I want to edit these Captivate projects now but I
everytime I go to import a modified powerpoint is get this message
"Could not open ppt file" Has anyone else seen this message and do
    you have a solution?
    lee

    Welcome to our community, Dan
    You asked:
Stupid bug on Adobe's part but didn't they buy this app from
    someone?
And the answer is that you are correct. Adobe did acquire
several products (Captivate included) when they bought Macromedia.
But then, Macromedia bought eHelp (at that time Captivate was known
as RoboDemo - the name eHelp gave it). And even eHelp bought the
product from the parent company of Nexus Concepts. Nexus Concepts
    originally named the product FlashCam.
As we can see, it's had a long and colorful history.
    Cheers... Rick
