Please any advice will be really really reaallllllllllly helpful. The one thing i would hear is that i will have to reinstall the operating system , cause i loose the DVD install of Tiger.

As this sounds more like an OS10.5 software issue than a hardware problem at this point, you might want to post in the forum dedicated to that system software here:

Safari will no longer open. It just goes back to my desktop.  When I right click on the safari icon in my dashboard it says it is open.  I was using firefox until I could find a fix for safari.  I made the mistake of changing my default search to firebox later for convenience and now I can't open my system preference or many safari or apple linked files. Some of my emails from trusted sites won't open and does the same thing.
I upgraded my original system from 10.4.11 to I believe 10.6. something about a year or so ago.  I thought about re installing my safari app but when I go to open anything connected to safari my screen goes back to the desktop.  I cant open any files that I have on my desktop that I set up through safari, like my banking program. Prior to changing system preference to safari default I was able to open those files and now I can't get into change it back.  Can you guide me through this?
    Thanks,
    Betty

Try running the 10.6.8 combo update.
    10.6.8 Combo Updater
    System Preferences or Safari Preferences?
    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart the computer, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

  • Can´t open Preference (??)

Can´t open Preference in iphoto anymore.
Also have some problem with black pictures - but when I click them they show up - but corrupt (several pictures merged into one).
I think the black pics is cause I used the Adobe RAW converter and made them b&w with it. But not sure.
But - Big problem - Can´t open Preference.
    Troubleshooting anyone?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Are you running the latest version of iPhoto, 7.1.4? If not update to it. Also do Smtr's suggestion of deleting the pref file.
As for the black and white files, if you have a lot of them and they are all in one Event, export them to a folder on the Desktop. Then download the Automator workflow application, "Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB profile" from Toad's Cellar and run it on that folder of files. Import that folder into iPhoto. When you confirm that they are displayed correctly you can delete the bad versions from iPhoto.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • How can I open a System 7 CD on my Mac 10.6.8?

How can I open a system 7 CD on my Mac 10.6.8?

System 7 never came on a CD.  It might have come on a floppy.   Do you mean System 7.6 or 7.5 CD?   There is no way legally to do so on a 10.6 running computer. You need a Mac from 1995 or 1996 or 1997 that supported that disc.    System 7 history is here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_7
Note, if no Mac model is stated on the CD, it will run on the older Macs assuming the right amount of RAM is installed, and the CPU supported by that system.   A Mac normally will not run an older Mac OS than it shipped with.  And Mac model specific CDs will only run on that age of that model that CD shipped with.

  • Can't open up "system preferences"

OK, so about a week ago I was just going through cleaning up my computer and I thought (like an idiot) that I had double copies of my "applications" folder and so I deleted one, and then emptied my trash. BIG MISTAKE! Now, my Safari is gone, which ***** (I'm using FireFox though, so it's not a huge deal) and I think I've lost a lot of other things as well. I just went to change my desktop picture and for whatever reason, I can't open up my "system preferences." I have NO clue what to do. Should I backup my remaining files and then reload everything? If so, how do I do that? (I'm clueless about most things computer-related).
PLEASE HELP! and I apologize if this is in the wrong forum. If someone can help me, please do! If you could respond here, or possibly EMail me at "[email protected]" I would be greatly appreciative.

You have to install Pacifist. Read the instructions to use pacifist... hmm you have no applications folder to install it to? You should be able to anyway. But let's change the strategy.
Assuming you have not deleted anything from /library/receipts
You may be able to repair this with the 10.4.5 Stand Alone Combo Update. Or the 10.4.6 Stand Alone Combo Updater depending on which version you are running now.
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions before and after update from /applications/utilities/disk utility.
If this does not work then we'll do pacifist.

  • Problem with Aperture 3.6 Can't open Preferences

I had a problem with Aperture 3.6; opened a new Library from the Vault, now cannot open Aperture Preferences. When I attempt to open preferences I get a very thin vertical line about 1 ½ inches long?? Any fixes for this/  Thanks, Vic

Try to delete the Aperture preferences as described here at this link:
Get help with Aperture 3 - Apple Support
    Steps to reset preference settings
To reset your Aperture user preference settings to their original state, do the following:
    Quit Aperture.
In the Finder choose "Go to folder" from the Go menu.
Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field. Press the Go button.
Remove the "com.apple.Aperture.plist" file from the Preferences folder.
Restart your computer if you're using OS X Mavericks.
The locations of your Aperture libraries are stored in the preference file listed above. If you have stored your library outside the default location of  ~/Pictures/Aperture Library, make a note of where the library is before deleting the Aperture preferences file. If you have more than one library, you can bring up a dialog to choose which one to load by pressing Option immediately after you open Aperture.

    Rick,
The documents aren't replacing each other - what you're experiencing is the new "tabbed windows" feature in CS4. Next time you try to open 2 documents, look at the bottom of the "Window" menu and you'll see that both documents are actually open. Then look at the window's title bar and you'll see two "tabs", similar to what some web browsers do with multiple open windows. Just click on the tab of the window you want in the foreground.
If you'd prefer to go back to the CS3 method, go to "Preferences>Interface" and un-check the "open documents as tabs" checkbox.

  • How can I open Appleworks files in Leopard?

I installed Leopard as an upgrade on my MacBook without problems. Everything seemed to open and print on my Epson Stylus CX7800 without problems; I was able to scan and print from a scanned file without difficulty; there was even an enhanced print dialog which was great. HOWEVER, when I opened files created with Appleworks 6.2.9, or created and successfully saved a new document and I attempted to print it AppleWorks and the print dialogue either locked up or crashed. I tried massaging everything I knew of but still was unable to print any AppleWorks document. I get the print screen and click print but nothing, nada happens. I cannot print to PDF on the left hand dropdown either.
I repaired permissions (both before and after installing Leopard) and have also dumped AppleWorks preference file, then restarting all to no avail. I cannot open the Appleworks files with either Pages or Keynote (did not even recognize the word processing files). When I attempt to, they crash after appearing to open a word processing file but all I got was gibberish! I attempted to open the files with Adobe 8 but it would recognize them and seemed to open them but then I got a "cannot open" message.
I have heard that trying to use Leopard with AppleWorks can cause a corruption of the hard drive. Is this true? I did find a way to solve my immediate problem but it is not one I like at all. I finally wiped one segment of my external 250GB drive and installed Tiger on it, then copied all my files to that segment. I can load and print Appleworks normally as before. I guess that is one kind of "fix" if a bit unwieldy since I prefer to use my MacBook from my reclining chair because of severe arthritis. ( I will again be out of the loop for awhile as my right knee is being replaced tomorrow.)
I am so curious as to why some seem to be able to use their AppleWorks. I did install Leopard as an update rather than wiping my HD and doing a new install. Should I delete AppleWorks and all associated files and reinstall AppleWorks and reinstall Leopard from scratch? Do you think that would help? I would appreciate any help anyone can give me as there are other problems with Leopard but less onerous than this one. Anyone out there to help the thousands of us who have used AppleWorks extensively as educators?
MacBook 2GHz Intel Core Duo with 2 GB 67 MHz DDR2 SDRAM and Leopard 10.5.1

I have heard that trying to use Leopard with AppleWorks can cause a corruption of the hard drive. Is this true?
No, not at all. AppleWorks actually runs better in Leopard on both my PPC & Intel Macs than it did in Tiger. I have found AppleWorks to be faster & more stable in Leopard on an Intel than any other system I've used.
I repaired permissions (both before and after installing Leopard) and have also dumped AppleWorks preference file, then restarting all to no avail.
There are more than one AppleWorks preferences to delete. Only deleting the .plist or just the files in the AppleWorks folder in Preferences will not work. They must all be deleted at the same time. Take a look at this user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly.
Deleting the preferences often fixes printing problems. Also, make sure you have the newest driver for your printer from the manufacturer's web site.
I did install Leopard as an update rather than wiping my HD and doing a new install. Should I delete AppleWorks and all associated files and reinstall AppleWorks and reinstall Leopard from scratch?
Possibly. I chose to do erase & install with migrating users & data for all of my Macs. I did try the upgrade with the MacBook Pro & it was a disaster with failure to start up after installing Leopard. I was willing to take the chance because everything on my MacBook Pro is on my desktop Mac.

  • Can't open Aperture after Snow Leopard to Mavericks upgrade.

Upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard. Now, the Aperture icon in the dock is greyed out. When I try to open it I get the message that I have Aperture 3.2.4 and it can't be opened with Mavericks. I purchased Aperture from the App Store when I had Snow Leopard and it shows in my purchases list, but when I check for available updates nothing shows. I have US English in my preferences, and Aperture is in my Applications file. I tried to update Aperture with 3.4.4 as an interim step from the Apple website, but got the message that I had to update from the App Store.
    Any help appreciated.
    Russ

Could there be anything interfering with the App Store connecting to Apple's servers? Firewall, antivirus filters? Any problems with your AppleID? Credit card expired, the answers to your security questions too short, an too simple password?
In some cases it will help, to boot into Safe Mode before connecting to the AppStore. Try to load the updates page while booted into Safe mode, see:  Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode

  • Can't open Freehand Mx in Leopard 10.5.8

I've been using Freehand Mx for years and have lots of recent files. Around 6 months ago updated my system (Intel iMac) to Leopard 10.5.8. Freehand was working fine until yesterday!
Now when I try to open it the application seems to open but there is no start image on screen. I can see it in the dock but the only way I can get out of it is to force quit as nothing appears on screen when it is supposedly loaded!
I've tried all the hotfix ideas and relaoded the system and the application, still nothing!
I recently installed Mackeeper and am beginning to wonder if that's the problem.
    Anyone got any ideas?

Do you think buying  an upgrade to Snow Leopard and installing that

    Andy
A Snow Leopard upgrade might work if it replaces those files that MacKeeper erased but my concern is if those files were related to FreeHand's installation. But even if you reinstalled the old Leopard, you will be going through the same process and if I understand what you did orignally, that didn't work. Best bet would be to back up your drive, erase, and reinstall your preferred flavor of OS X. Then install FreeHand and register it fresh. Remember to use the hotfix if you decided on Snow Leopard. Sorry I can't help much more than that, Andy.  — Mark
