Can't open programs on MacBook

AAA!
I'm a recent convert to Mac from PC. I know my way around a PC pretty well and it's very frustrating because I feel like a little kindegartner trying to use my new MacBook! I'm not even sure what OS I have, or even how to figure that out! I think I've got the Leopard or something, but i'm not sure what the corresponding numbers are.
My main problem is that I cannot open any programs that did not come pre-installed on my MacBook. That means that I cannot open any of the Microsoft Office programs I installed. I have tried double clicking, right clicking and hitting Open, etc. Anything I could think of, I have tried! All I get is the icon doing the little bouncy thing and then NOTHING! What is going on here? How do I fix it?
Also, I have a Maxtor OneTouch USB external drive that I want to use to back up my MacBook. I have some files on there that I saved from my PC that I need to delete to make room for the clone of my hard drive. However, when I open the Maxtor hard drive in the finder, I don't get the option to move anything to trash. Is it because I saved the files there from my PC??? I don't understand why the Maxtor is like that because I also have a WD Passport and I can do anything I want with the files on that one, even though all that stuff was saved from my PC. I wish I could just use the WD Passport for the backup, but it's not big enough to handle it.
Can anyone help the poor Mac newbie? Thanks!

Click blue apple on your top left corner of screen > about this mac > if it said MAc OS X version 10.4.x, then you are using Tiger (since Leopard is not in the market yet, unless you got second hand macbook that installed 10.5.x from beta version or developer conference event.

Did you installed it properly using correct CD (and usually it should be in application folder if you installed it correctly). Which office you tried to install there, for PC version office cannot be installed on macbook (unless you using XP on parallel or bootcamp).

Could be your external was formatted using NTFS format which become read only on macbook / OS X. You should re-format that as FAT32 using your PC or ms-dos system (same FAT32) using OS X disk utility: application/utilities/disk utility/click your external/erase/ file system: ms-dos system.
Good Luck

  • Can't open programs on laptop

I boot my laptop and it starts up fine, but for some reason I can't open any of my programs. Not sure if somehow a virus got on because nothing works.

Did you just purchase the laptop?  If so, I would take it back in, and have Best Buy look at it, and fix it, or get you a different computer.
My opinions are mine, and mine alone.

  • Why my LV 8.6 (Englsih version in WIN 7 English OS) can not open programs I developed under LV (Chinese version)

    Hi,
I just installed  LV 8.6 (English version) in my new laptop (WIN 7 English OS). I found under LV 8.6 environment I can not open some programs I developed using LV 8.5 (Chinese version). These programs are saved in folders with Chinese names (subvis for some programs have Chinese names). If I take these programs on the desktop and chang the Chinese name into number or English name I can open them usingL LV 8.6. However, all Chinese words in opened programs can not be identified.
     What should I do?
    Thanks.

I was replying into a recent message thread where the user posted a VI that had some oriental characters in the VI name and I was not able to open it as a result until I saved the file and renamed it using normal alphabetical characters.  It is not a problem with LabVIEW but with windows not knowing what to do with a strange character set.
The only solution I know is to go change your file and folder names so they don't use chinese characters.  You could also try opening them on a chinese version of Windows.  Maybe Microsoft has some download you can install that will allow english Windows to work in a chinese environment.

  • TightVNC - Can't open programs on remote session

    Hi All,
I'm a Linux newbie and have a problem I can't seem to solve. The other day I installed tightvnc and have a server which runs on startup. I have added the following line to /etc/inittab:
    vn:35:once:sudo su - brian -c "vncserver :1 -name Brian -depth 24 -geometry 1280x600"
I also have the following in my xstartup file
    #!/bin/sh
    #xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
    #xsetroot -solid grey
    #xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
    #twm &
    xhost +localhost &
    exec startxfce4 &
I am using UltraVNC on Windows 7 to remote into my arch box and I manage to get the XFCE4 desktop. The problem lies in trying to open programs on my remote session. If I click on the terminal shortcut, nothing happens. Same with Firefox etc.. I attempted to right click then execute and still no go.
However, I am able to click the filesystem icon and it will open. Also, I can click on logoff and shutdown no problems.
    Any ideas?

I use tightvnc as well, but I start it a bit differently (I don't think this is your problem).  Have you seen the tightvnc wiki article?  I updated it a while ago with the method that I use.
Anyway, I don't think the & mark is needed in your ~/.vnc/xstartup
    $ cat ~/.vnc/xstartup
    #!/bin/sh
    xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
    export XKL_XMODMAP_DISABLE=1
    #exec ck-launch-session startxfce4
    exec ck-launch-session startlxde
I dunno why your mouse isn't working properly if it's not something in that file.

  • Started a Pages project on my MacBook Pro, edited it on my iPad Air, went back to MacBook and now can't open it on MacBook. What can I try?

When I try to open it on MacBook it says this:

    Found the answer.
I had not closed/saved what I was working on, on the iPad before the battery died.
I plugged in the iPad, saved/closed the article I was working on and that solved the entire problem.
    It's now working well.

  • Can't open mail on MacBook

I was updating OS X Update 10.9.2 and it told me to restart.  I closed all applications including Mail.  When I try to restart now, it says to quit Mail.  But, now I can't open Mail, much less quit it.
    What should do?

Try the Force Quit function from the Apple menu to quit Mail.

  • PE 11 new install on WinXP system - Debug event error, can't open program

    Hi everyone,
I searched the community for similar errors and followed a couple of troubleshooting steps suggested for older versions of PE, but they didn't work. I just installed Premiere Element 11 on my Windows XP office desktop (also installed PS Elements 11, which works without a problem.) Install went well and I rebooted the system as prompted. Every time I attempt to open Premiere however (I am not attempting to load any video files, I just want to open the program to start a new project), I get the splash screen at first, but after a few seconds of "Loading" and/or "Initializing" a bunch of parameters, the program hangs and following screen pops up:
    "Premiere Element Debug Event"
Premiere Element has encountered an error.
    [..\..\Src\Core\Preferences.ccp-338]
    Continue
When I click on "Continue" the following window pops up:
    "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library"
    Runtime Error!
    Program: ..e\Adobe Premiere Elements 11\Adobe Premiere Elements.exe
The application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.
    OK
So, here I am support team... Need more information, lol. I will also add that clicking the OK after the second window pops up often doesn't close the Premiere splash window still visible in the background, I have to CTRL-ALT-DEL and kill it manually by ending the process in Task Manager.
I installed the same program - same s/n - on my home computer as well, with no issues (that's a much newer, and much faster, Windows 8.1 system however.) I think you are entitled to install 2 copies though, right? So this wouldn't be related to too many attempts to register the same software?
    Thanks for any help.

Wea re not Adobe. We are Premiere Elements users who visit here under our own free will (unscheduled) to help other Premiere Elements users with their Premiere Elements workflows.
Please detail the resources of your Windows XP computer. What edition is it...professional, home premium, or other? You realize come April 2014 Microsoft will discontinue support for Windows XP. Apparently you can continue to use it, but Microsoft points to security risks in that state.
    a. how much installed RAM, how much available
    b. how much free hard drive space
    c. is the video card/graphics card used by the computer up to date according to the web site of the manufacturer of the video card/graphics card.
Did you install the program to the computer default location according to the installation process?
Please review and then we can discuss the details.
    Thank you.

  • Can't open programs .... HELP!!!

I was in the middle of a system update when my battery died (I know I should've had it plugged in) and now when I wake my computer the programs that are pre-installed with the OS (ie ... Safari, iTunes, GarageBand, etc) won't open. What should I do now?? I can't email or Skype or anything .. HELP!!!

I suggest that you startup from the original dvd that came with your computer & do a custom install of all the Apple programs. This should overwrite any incomplete programs. If it works so that you can access the internet download the latest combo update & run this which will update all, hopefully.
If Software Update will run at any time try this instead of what I've just written. It might solve all.
You can also run Disk Utility from the install disk and do a repair disk & a repair permissions. Both of these might help sort things out.
I keep a bootable external backup which I would use in such a situation so that I can then reinstall any applications which don't open.
Let's know if any of these work for you.

    Hi,
Thanks for your reply.  I followed the other link and it didn't help my current situation.
Is there a link for paid support .. all I need to do is the following for a client:
    1) Install Crystal report 2011 on a Microsoft 2008 Server R2.. my error message is above.
Resolve the error on start up of Crystal reports..
It's already been over 1 week .. and I can't seem to get a live person on SAP that can help me... once this is resolved I think I will be ok.
I have CR XI on running on another server with no issues.. I don't know if the above is due to a service pack issue, security issue on installation, ...  its a production server so I just want to resolve this quick.
Any help you can give me on getting alive person that I can talk to will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.
