Can't open saved iDVD project

I've been working on my first iDVD project for some time now using iMovie/iDVD08. The first version (movie and slideshow) works fine and I can open the associated .dvdproj file and make amendments if and as required. The DVD which was produced looks good.
However, as it's a 57-minute long movie, I was keen to introduce chapters. I used GarageBand for this purpose, sent the movie with chapters back to iDVD and added appropriate Scene menus. All worked fine on my computer. I saved the new project and retrieved it (just to be sure to be sure). All OK so far. I burned a new DVD which looks good and scene selection works great, however ....
can't now retrieve the .dvdproj. Any attempt to do so causes iDvd to hang. Activity monitor shows "Encoder server not responding." I need to force quit this process and also iDvd itself to get out of this bind. Very frustrating. I've been through this entire process now twice (recreating from first chapter-free version) and the problem recurs.
Can anybody assist?

Hello, Conor,
Welcome to the discussions.
First, you should delete iDVD's preference file. With iDVD closed, go to your home folder(YourUserName)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.idvd.plist.
Drag this plist file to the trash. Don't worry; iDVD will create a new fresh one when you relaunch it.
See if you can open your project now.
Post back if this did not work.
Now, if you had an iDVD project that burned successfully, and you still have that iDVD project saved, you should be able to open it just as you did when you were working on it. Getting that message about the encoder server not responding is strange. Your project should already have encoded since you were able to burn a DVD. That problem may be resolved by deleting the plist file. You might also try just shutting down the computer and restarting it.
However, remember that iDVD is not like iMovie where the project's contents are actually saved within the project. An iDVD project should be thought of as a virtual or alias project. Its files point to their location on your computer. So, your iMovie is not physically within iDVD's files. If you move or delete any files that your iDVD project needs, iDVD will not be able to locate them.
It is highly recommended that you do a 'save as disc image' for each of your iDVD projects. This process looks just as if iDVD is burning a disk, but it is creating a disk image that can be used to do the actual burn, using Disk Utility.
It is useful to keep your projects as their disk images to do further disk-burning of that project in the future. The disk images cannot be edited, so be sure you are completely finished editing your project before creating a disk image. A disk image is a self-contained file, so you no longer need to keep your original iMovie or iDVD projects. Keeping only the disk images will also save drive space.

Why do you still need the iDVD project if you have already burned your DVD? If you want to make further edits to your iMovie and burn a new DVD, you can always recreate your iDVD project.....not the simplest solution, nut once you have created an iDVD project, it is usually fairly quick to recreate it .
If you just want to burn more disks from that project, you can always use the first DVD to make a disk image of your project, and use that disk image for further burning.

  • Can't open saved project

    Hi,
I'm having problems trying to open saved encore projects. I get an error message saying "The player used to create the project could not be found. Defaulting to the Adobe player". When I click OK the program then either freezes or crashes.
I'm using Windows 7 64 bit and have all the latest downloads installed for both Encore and the computer itself, including display drivers.
Can anybody suggest what I might be doing wrong?
    Many thanks,

  • What's actually IN a saved iDVD project?

After upgrading to iLife '06, I wanted to burn a new copy of an iMovie project I first put on iDVD a few weeks ago. I've never done this before; always burned all copies at once.
When I open the named/saved iDVD project (both from within Documents and via Open Recent), it shows me empty Drop Zones and a blank menu. Where's the theme/audio etc. I put together when I first created the project?
    Thanks.

It is easiest to duplicate a video-DVD with Toast (i.e. a 3rd party app).
With the Disk Utility it is very easy to accidentally burn a data-DVD (instead of a video-DVD), so follow these instructions strictly:
    - Using Disk Utility (Mac OS X 10.3 and higher):
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42724
    1. Insert the DVD-R video disc that you created with iDVD into the SuperDrive.
    2. Open the Disk Utility application (/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility).
    3. Select the disc (not just the disc session) you want to copy from the listing.
    4. From the Images menu, choose New and the choose Image from "your disk name".
    5. Type a file name and choose "DVD/CD Master" from the Image Format pop-up menu.
    6. Click the Create button. After the image has been created you should see it in the disk listing in the Disk Utility window.
    7. Eject the DVD-R video disc.
    8. Select the disk image you created from the listing (that *.img is also mounted on the Desktop).
    9. Click the Burn icon in the toolbar.
    10. When prompted, insert a blank DVD-R disc.
    11. Click the Burn button.

  • IMovie-- Share to iDVD--- Opens previous iDVD project...why?

    Hello all,
I hope this is as simple as setting a preference somewhere. I have created an iMovie project and I am sending to iDVD via the "Share" menu. When I do this, iDVD automatically opens the PREVIOUS iDVD project I was working on. I would assume that it would let me choose to "Create New" from the iDVD "Share" menu....am I mistaken? Is there a simple preference change that I am missing?
Just for the record, I usually export from iMovie to iDVD to "Full Quality" then import that into iDVD. However, this project has many chapter markers that I need to include in the DVD. From everything I've been reading, I HAVE to use the "Share" to iDVD option in order to preserve the chapter markers.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated:)

    Klaus1...
Thanks for the advice. If I understand what you're saying, I can just close the iDVD project and then open a new one and import the iMovie project file I'm working with?
    Karl,
I have done this several times and each time iDVD was not running when I "Shared" to iDVD from iMovie. Although, if I open a new iDVD project, save it, then close it...then "Share" to iDVD from iMovie, the correct iDVD project will open. (the last iDVD project open).
Anyway, it seems that there is a way to accomplish what I need, so I'll go with the former method. I will mess with it further after I get done burning the several copies of this project that I need. (wedding video as a surprise for family members;)
    Thanks for your advice!

  • I can not open my iMovie project

I can not open my iMovie project. Everytime I click on it, the spinning wheel keeps spinning and spinning until I force quite the iMovie. Please help?

OK Let's take a step back.
If you imported video clips from a camcorder there would be an Events folder in the Movies/iMovie Events/ folder.
You have the option as you import from a camcorder to send your Event to an external drive instead. In this case, it would be in the iMovie Events folder at the top level of the external drive.
If your project has no video clips, but only photos, there may be no events folder, only links to iPhoto.
Similarly, if your camera imported your video clips to iPhoto, and you used the iPhoto event in iMovie, then your clips are in iPhoto, and there is no separate iMovie event.

  • Can I open an imovie project from an external hard drive on a different computer than my own? If so how?

Can I open an imovie project from an external hard drive on a different computer other than my own? If so how?

If you used the Finder to move the files, iMovie will have lost track of them. iMovie holds the locations of the Event files, and Project files contain references to those locations. If you move the files, iMovie has no way of knowing where they are.
If you can, first move all the files back to their original locations. Plug in the external drive. Open iMovie and move the files in iMovie's interface (help explains how, but basically, just drag and drop in the event pane).
Then you can connect the drive to the new computer, and iMovie will see them.

Go to MacHD > Users > your home folder > Library > Preferences > com.apple.iMovieApp.plist (drag that to the trash)
This method didn't work for me, I've created an alternate thread for mi case. I'd appreciate any other alternative.

  • I can't open old IMovie project done with ILife09

I can't open old IMovie project done with ILife09 on my new MacBook Pro Retina with Lion Mountain system.

you can't just move a project that way. It all needs to be contained properly. If you can find the original imovieHD project folder, you can start again.

  • Can't Open An Existing Project in iDVD

I've prepared an iDvd project saved it and when ever I run iDvd and select "open an existing project" it just freezes and only gives me the option to "Force Quit". It allows me to create a new project but I can't open my existing one. Can anyone help. I hope I don't have to start it all over again.

Have you tried deleting iDVD's preference file?
Close iDVD. Go to your Home folder(YourUserName)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.idvd.plist
Drag this plist file to the trash. iDVD will create a new fresh one when you reopen it.
Open iDVD, and see if this problem is resolved.
If not, try signing on as a new account. Go to system preferences, account.
If that resolves the problem, then it is not the software. Post back for more assistance with this.
If neither of these helps, you may have to reinstall iDVD. Again, post back if you get to this point and want assistance with reinstalling. You will need to find your original iLife installation disks, or the Mac installation disks if iLife was preinstalled on your computer when you purchased it.

  • Unable to burn saved iDVD project

I have exported a slideshow from iPhoto to iDVD and saved it in the Documents folder. Now when I go into iDVD to open an existing project, I can find the saved project in Documents but I am unable to get the project to open in iDVD so I can work on the slideshow and ultimately burn it to a DVD. How do you open a slideshow exported to iDVD after it has been saved to the Document folder??? Once an slideshow has been exported from iPhoto to iDVD can it be worked on (organized, music applied etc.) prior to being burned to a DVD? Please help, we're going crazy here!!!
    Paul from Wisconsin

    Hey Paul,
When you go to your documents folder what is the suffix (ending) of the file you exported? Is it .dvdproj or is it something else. I suspect you exported your slideshow out as a movie file (aka a Quicktime file). You need to open iDVD and then drag that movie file into the open iDVD window.
Once an slideshow has been exported from iPhoto to iDVD can it be worked on (organized, music applied etc.) prior to being burned to a DVD?
    No.
iDVD is the last step in the creation process. You should not be adding your slideshow to iDVD from iPhoto until the slideshow is exactly the way you want it. If you want to make changes to that slideshow, those changes are made in iPhoto and then you re-send your slideshow to iDVD.
Go to iPhoto, make your slideshow the way you want it, then go to Share > iDVD. This will take the slideshow and put it in iDVD where it needs to be. No extra steps.
    Hope that helps.

  • How can I get my iDVD project from my iMac to my MBPro?

I created a slideshow on my iMac in iPhoto, sent it to iDVD, and then burned the slideshow to a disc from iDVD. I'd like to have the iDVD project on my MBPro, too, but everything I've tried doesn't work!
I've read the posts saying that archiving the iDVD project would work...I did that on my iMac and burned it to a disc to transfer it. Well, the archiving made an "Alias" of the iDVD file, and when I tried to open it on my MBPro I got an error message that it "couldn't be opened because the original file can not be found". Of course not! The "original" file is on my iMac!)
Any help would really be appreciated...I'm not real familiar with the whole iDisk thing, but I was wondering if that might work??

I actually did do File/Archive when I archived it; still not sure why it created an alias that I can't work with...I'm pretty sure though that the project is an ok size for a DVD; it's about 25 minutes total, WAY less than 4.7GB that the disk holds. And, I had burned a copy of the final iDvd file to a DVD-R before I decided I wanted to have the file on my MBPro.
Still hoping to find out how I can transfer this file from Mac to Mac...but, thanks for your input!

  • Can't open my IBA project: error parasing document index: invalid character in attribute value

    Hi guys,
I am new of iBooks Author and I am not HTML code savvy (expect the very basics). I have to send an iBooks for an University exam and I can't open my file anymore.
I was working on it since Saturday, I saved many times and I have quit the iBooks Author and rebooted my iMac few moments ago. There were no crashes.
The project is a iBook with pictures, videos and some Tumult Hype animations. It is 248Mb.
Now I can't open the file (but I can see it in quick view). The error message is in the subject, but here it is again:
"Progetto iBooks" couldn't be opened. Error parsing document index: invalid character in attribute value.
Now, I have to send the project today (here in Italy it is now 7:10 am) and so I am kind of desperate.
    Any suggestion?
I am already working on making a new ibook, but if someone could give me a workaround to fix it and open it on iBooks I would be extremely grateful.
    Best regards,
    Sebastiano

    Hi Sebastiano,
Did you ever get any answer? I have the same problem and now have to work from an old version again (good thing I had backup one manually!)
    Thx
    JP.
