Can't Open Songs

So I reinstalled my OS the other day and now I cannot open about half of my GB songs. I had saved them from the other OS install. I have GB2 with Jampack four, I am fully updated and all the software I have is installed.
I just get an error message that states:
"Can't open Song"
This song requires a newer version of Garageband
I never had a newer version when I wrote those songs.

Hi Schneb,
My songs were composed entirely of loops and hand -programmed sequences using factory voices. No MIDI.
OK, requesting "Show Package Content" (that's sly - didn't know you could do that!) reveals three elements:
Freeze Files (folder)
Media (folder)
projectData (file)
'Freeze Files' contains 12 elements:
- classes.nib
- info.nib
- keyedObjects.nib
plus nine .aif files with names like
- "Dev02Inst...075510.aif"
- "Dev02Trac...1584937.aif"
etc.
'Media' is empty
Can you tell anything from that? Never having opened one of these before, I don't know what's meant to be in there!
Incidentally, when I try to open one of these, GB produces a blank 'processing' window (with the horizontal barber's pole), which never goes away, but curiously, GBs menus remain active. I can open another song while GB appears to be processing my first 'open' command, and if I do that (with a new song, not one of the recovered ones), the hanging window simply disappears, and the new song is launched correctly... Weird.
Trying to open one of the recovered songs from within GB makes no difference: same hanging behaviour.
Cheers,
Colin

  • Help!!!!! can't open songs!!!!

...theres several songs on in my i-tunes library with an exclamation next to it and when i click on it a message pops up saying "The song could not be used because the original file could not be found. This has happened to me before.. This error occurs because you have probably moved the actual song file.
All you need to do is double click the song that has the exclamation point next to it, click yes when the box comes up and then go through your files and locate the song file.
Hopefully once you do this it won't ask you to locate it again unless you more the file.
To avoid this, you can set your options so that you can dubplicate the songs you have in your library, but that can take up a lot of space.
    Hope this answers your question!!

  • Can't open songs once transferred to new computer. Please help!

    Hello
I followed the helpful advice on these boards and used an external hard drive to transfer my iTunes library from an old PC to an new one. My problem now is I see the songs the songs in my music folder but it seems that I would have to import them one at a time to get them into my new library. There has got to be an easier way that I am missing. Thanks in advance for your help.

    I have a similar problem.
I removed and re-installed Itunes and Ipod software as per the Apple site recommendations because my ipod would not connect to itunes. I re-installed both software, opened itunes and had no library at all showing and my view config was all defaults. I copied and renamed the "itunes library xxx-xx-xx.itl" file from the previous library folder in my music back and it restored my library and playlists (yeah!).
My problem is that many (25 to 30%) of my 10,000+ songs have an exclamation point next to them and the library can't find them. It can find the rest of the songs (including some but not all songs in the same CD's). All of the songs are in the same folder tree on an external usb hard drive. I can manually locate and connect the songs but this would take 100 years to do. I tried to consolodate the library but this did not help. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,

  • Can't open songs on new computer

I'm sure this is a topic that is asked all the time so please bear with me. My old computer bit the dust and I was forced to purchase a new one running windows 7. I was able to salvage the old hard drive by purchasing a hard drive enclosure and installed my documents to the new computer. I downloaded itunes to the new computer and it seemed like everything turned up in itunes including playlist and artwork. I thought everything was fine until I tried to select a song to play...nothing. All I got was the message; "The song "..." could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it" Of coarse, I would like to locate it but I haven't a clue where to begin or look. I would certainly appreciate anyones help. By the way, my ipod is an older one about 5 years old, 20gb and I think it was called a third generation, but I don't know for sure. Thanks in advance for your help

Have you tried dragging it onto your Pages icon?
Is it by any chance passworded?
It helps if you give some details:
eg What version of Pages you are using?
Can you just open Pages on its own?
The file extension and origin of the word doc
What message does the computer pop up when it fails to open?
Otherwise it is all just guesswork.

  • Can't open songs because it can't find files that are where they should be

For about 90% of my Itunes library, when I try to play a song it says it can't be opened because the file can't be found. I can find the file and it's exactly where it should be and once I find it, it plays fine. These are not new songs, but one's I've had in the library a long time. It's pointing correctly to the Itunes music folder, but only seems to be able to find stuff that I fairly recently added. Can anyone help?

It is likely that something has been moved. iTunes does not do folder watching so if anything moves or is renamed iTunes will not find it.
If you open iTunes Music Library.xml with WordPad, you can see where iTunes thinks your music files are located.
Look for Lines starting <Location>, note the the space character is represented by %20 in the path.
You can look for specific files with Find.
This may help you to workout what has gone wrong. Whether or not this leads to an easy solution is less certain. If the files are not where iTunes thinks they should be, and moving them so that the path is correct is one possibility if it can easily be done. The other is to use Find and replace to correct the paths if there is an easy edit that can be done. Then recreate the library from the xml file as in this article.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451
The third possibility that is easy and certain to work is to start with a new library. But this loses all counts ratings and playlists.
Close iTunes, drag iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music library.xml out of the iTunes folder to the desktop.
Open iTunes and an empty library is created. Use File>>Add folder to library... to add you iTunes Music folder.

  • Can't open songs into iTunes

Just got a new Dell 13" laptop, transferred all my iTunes songs to HD but iTunes doesn't recognize any of them. I can click on the file and then it plays in iTunes but I have 900 songs which would take me awhile. Is there any simple solution?

Are these iTunes music store purchased songs or tracks you imported from CDs? If the first one, iTMS songs, perhaps your computer lost authorization and you need to reauthorize it? Do they play ok in iTunes still?

  • Can't open song.  Error says song is "damaged".

    Help!
Last night, I created a song, locked all tracks and exported it to iTunes. When I went to Garageband today, I was unable to open my new song. When the error popped up, it stated that the song was unable to be open because "it is damaged."
Is there any way to recover this? The song itself isn't even in the same folder as all of the rest of my Garageband songs (I never moved it). I could only find it somewhere on my hard drive using Finder.
Would locking the tracks changed things? I've never locked tracks on a song before. I'm pretty new to Garageband, but I have a handful of songs created. This is the 1st time this sort of error has popped up.) The song is still in iTunes in .aif .
    Thanks for your help!

Well, I tried that, but there is no "show contents" spot to click on. The kicker in all of this is that the only file I have is no longer where the rest of my garageband songs usually reside. Once I found this problem song in Finder, I tried to click on it to open it, but the error popped up. I then moved it to my desktop for future attempts. Just to be sure I understood your advice, I went into the regular garageband folder and I saw where "show contents" should be and found other media files.
I have no idea why this song disappeared. It's not even available under the regular spot when I try to "open existing project" on GB. It's gone.
Does this mean I'm out of luck?

  • Can't open song file!

I have a song that i've been working on, but it will not open up anymore. I get the message: "The application GarageBand quit unexpectedly..." and the option to close, report, and reopen. When I hit reopen, garageband opens up and all the tracks are visible, but i am unable to do anything within garageband as it basically behaves like it is frozen. The other projects I have open up without a problem. Any guesses as to what's going on? Thanks

Yes, I tried both the repair utility and deleting the preferences, but still no luck. Is there any way to extract the midi info from the file and open it in a different program, such as Cubase?

  • ITunes tells me "Could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"  I can locate it and all my other music, but can only open one song at a time.  How do I set it to open all my music whenever I want it?

I just spent several hours dealing with this when switching to a new PC. It was extremely frustrating as I knew my files were on my external HD but no matter how many times I copied my old iTunes folder over the files were still missing...because dummy me had forgotten to "unhide folders" on my new PC and my old files were actually stored in a hidden folder created long long ago.
This is how I did it on Windows 7 with iTunes 10
    1. Look in iTunes Advanced Preferences to see where iTunes is saving files. (Edit, Preferences, Advanced)
         Example: C:/Users/Woildbill/My Music/iTunes/Music
    2. Ensure you are able to see hidden files - Control Panel, Folder Option, View, Show Hidden Files
    3. Use Your Computer's Search Function to Locate the Missing File (Start, Search, type name of song - I started my search in "My Music" folder but be sure to expand to entire Computer if not found right away)
    4. In Search Results, right-click found folder and select properties. This will tell you where the file is actually stored.
    5. Use Windows Explorer (right-click start) to navigate to the location of the file. It is likley your other missing files are in the same location.
    6. In Windows Explorer, copy the newly located files to the iTumes location from Step 1 and everything should work again.
    Hope this helps!

  • I recently upgraded to a G5 and Logic Pro 8. My previous system was a Power Mac 7200 with Logic Platinum 3.5.3. I can not open the old song files unless they are first saved in Logic 6 or 7. Where do I get a dongle for Logic 7?

eBay or Craigslist would be the only choice.

  • Can't open my songs in iTunes

    Hi
I installed iTunes match and have uploaded my songs. Now a lot of songs appear more brightly grey (not black) with a cloud, so i can't open, steam, listen, them.
    Can someone help me?
    Thank you!
Greetings from switzerland and sorry for my bad english :-)
    Claudia

    Hello Claudia,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with iTunes Match.  I found an article with some steps you can take when you're not able to play or download songs using iTunes Match.
I recommend reviewing the section titled "If you are unable to download a song, play a song, or access songs from iTunes Match" in the following article:

  • Can't access songs/open GarageBand

For some reason the files for each track I had recorded (known as No Effects then some #) were in my trash. I emptied the trash not knowing what they were since they did not open with any other applications (they came up as iTunes files and did not play). I still have the songs and I can find them with spotlight, but I can't open any of them and whenever I try to start GB it tries to load one of my songs and then says "No Effects #) is not found!". The worst part is that I can't even make a new song, so I pretty much have a useless application right now. What can I do about this?

    The only option is continue.
that's weird, there should also be a "Cancel" option
most of {the other songs} opened.
at least all are not lost, that's good.
how do I delete the fields
    by "field" you mean "track"?
command-delete deletes tracks, and there's also the "Delete Track" menuItem
