Can't open spreadsheet

An old Numbers-spreadsheet has been converted into a folder, and Numbers says that it can´t open folders. If I open the floder from finder, it contains some strange files, among others a zip-file. But I can't find the spreadsheet.  Any suggestions?

Birgitte,
Do you recall installing some kind of compressed file manager? If so, that's the problem. These programs usually have preferences you can use to tell them to leave certain file types alone.

  • Can't open Spreadsheet on iPad

    Hello,
I have numbers on all three devices (iPad, iPhone and iMac)
    Versions:
    iPad - 2.2.2 (1279)
    iPhone - 2.2.1 (1236)
    iMac - 3.2.2 (1878)
For some reason I can't open a spreadsheet on my iPad, I work with iCloud
every day and on the other two devices the spreadsheet is fine but not on the iPad.
    What should I do?
    Thanks.

On your iPad have you changed your settings to On in TWO places?

  • I have an iMac using the app numbers.  Can't open spreadsheets because program is telling me I need to upgrade my numbers application but app updates is telling me it is already updated and there is nothing I need to do.  What can I do?

Cant open Iworks-Numbers application.  Computer is telling me I need to update numbers application in order open spreadsheet.  Progran is already updated.  This problem started yesterday.  Any suggestions?  Sounds like many other users are having the same problem.

Are you launching Numbers from an icon in your Dock? Installing the update does not change the Dock icons & it does not remove the older versions. Go to your Applications folder & launch the new Numbers from there then right-click on the Dock icon & select Options > Keep in Dock.
Installing new versions of iWork has never replaced existing versions. This is nothing new. The only thing new is that the '09 apps are moved to an iWork '09 folder if they were purchased from the Mac App Store. If they were installed from disk they should already be in a separate folder in Applications.

  • Can't open spreadsheet 3.2 in numbers '09

Made spreadsheets on my Macbook Pro with Numbers 3.2 (Mavericks) which is in reparation at the moment. Trying to open these spreadsheets at our IMac with Numbers '09 but:
you need a newer version of Numbers to open this spreadsheet etc...
Don't want Mavericks on our Imac cause I had lots of troubles after downloading it at my Macbook. Mail crashes, Iphoto troubles, etc. etc. and everything so slow... Our administration is at the Imac and I can't risk losing any of those files! Upgrade is € 17,99 and I've files from Pages and Keynote also! Is there an other solution?

    Hi Crescentia,
Before you delete any update, take a look here:
Wayne Contello has written a User Tip for working with the old and new versions of iWork.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6991
The trick is to drag icons for both versions to your Dock. Right click or control click on each and Options > Keep in Dock. That puts you in charge of which version you launch.
Here is a screen shot of both Numbers icons on my Dock.
Numbers 2.3 (Numbers '09) on the left with a three column graph.
Numbers 3.2 on the right with a four column graph.
Both versions will run happily together. Just be sure which version is opening your document.
Instead of double clicking the document, run whichever version of Numbers/Pages/Keynote suits and use File > Open.
    Regards,
    Ian.
P.S. you may want to update your profile iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5) to OS X Mavericks? . Ian.

  • "Can't Open Spreadsheet" error on Numbers on iCloud?

I got this error on one of my spreadsheets... I don't know why.  It happened after I was prompted with a conflict resolution, I picked one and then couldn't open it.  I copied it to my iMAC and still nada.  Any idea how to fix this or I need to remake it from scratch?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Can't open Apple Works docs in Pages

Strange, but: The 1st day I used Pages I could open Apple Works and Word docs
just fine. The 2nd day trying to open Apple Works docs resulted in
the message: "Import Error- the Apple Works document has an unsupported file type"
Word docs still open OK. Anyone?

To save as a "newer" AppleWorks file (i.e. AppleWorks 6 file format), you'll need to have AppleWorks 6, which will open older file formats from version 5 and then give you the option to save the as version 6 files.
However, your friend will not be able to open these AppleWorks files with Pages: as Peggy and others have pointed out on numerous occasions, Pages can only open AppleWorks word processing files (and even in this case, there are restrictions; as far as I can remember, it will only open documents with floating graphics. Or was it the other way round, and it cannot open files with floating graphics? If I'm wrong, please feel free to correct me, Peggy); it can't open spreadsheet files as iWork '05 doesn't have a spreadsheet program which could handle the data. I'd suggest finding someone who has AppleWorks 6 (anyone with a Mac mini, iMac or eMac), opening the files and saving them in a format which Excel can read.

  • I can't open my numbers spreadsheet on my Mac, from iCloud

I save my numbers spreadsheets to icloud as I need to access them on the go.
Now that I have turned my Mac off and back on, I can't access any of my numbers spreadsheets from icloud.
When I try to open one I get an error message that says "You need a newer version of Numbers to open this spreadsheet."
    I have the latest version.
This happened a few weeks ago, and was eventually sorted when another update came through for numbers for my Mac.
But this time I waited for the updated to catch up with Australia, but I still can't open them.
I can however access then by sharing the document via icloud, but I can't use it in numbers on my Mac, and I cant save it to my Mac.
    Does anyone have any tips?

It sounds like you may have mre than one version of Numbers installed on your Mac. and that the older one is attempting to open these files.
If you were previously using Numbers '09, and upgraded to Numbers 3, the older version will still be on the Mac, enclosed in a folder named iWork '09, found in your Applications folder.
Numbers 3 will also be in the Applications folder, but not enclosed in another folder.
The two versions have different feature sets, and I would caution against removing the earlier version before ensuring that any features you have been using and that you need are supported in Numbers 3. Both versions can coexist on the same machine (and according to reports, can both be running at the same time).
To ensure that you are launching the newer version, make sure you have it's icon on the Dock, and that you use that icon to start the launch. The icons for the two versions are similar—both are vertical bar graphs in 3D format. The difference is in the number of bars—three for Numbers '09 and four for Numbers 3. Once you ahve launched the needed version, use File > Open (or File > Recent items) to locte and open the file.

  • Can't open a file exported from Quicken, in Appleworks 6.2.9 Spreadsheet:

    n Quicken,
File Export gives 2 format choices - Plain Text; MS Excel.
choosing MS Excel results in file with .slk extension.
To open from desktop, Finder has no recommended applications.
from Choose Application, Appleworks 6 is not allowed.
TextEdit is allowed; produces a text file.
    In Appleworks,
File Open, for SS type and All Available file formats, produces a listing
(like text file, not a SS); uses Textedit for some reason.
Open, for SS type and Excel Win 5 format, shows the .slk file available,
choosing Open causes Appleworks to quit; Try Again doesn't help.
    Somehow, changed extension to .xls Appleworks still quits;
now what?? I could do this with an old version of Quicken and Clarisworks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions jimeast
I don't have the option of exporting as other than a Quicken file type in Quicken 2005 that I can see. I'd suggest exporting as a plain text file. That should maintain the tabs between fields. You can then open it as a spreadsheet through the AppleWorks Open dialog or drag & drop the text file icon on a new, blank spreadsheet.

    HS,
If you recently purchased a new computer, call AppleCare and describe your problem. Others who have done this have received an iWork '09 disk in the mail with which to do the conversion.

  • Can't Open Old Spreadsheets

I have new version of Numbers (3.01) and can't open my old spreadsheets. Says I need to save them in Numbers '09 format. How do I accomplish this?

It sounds like your spreadsheets are Numbers v1 from iWork '08. Unfortunately, the new versions of the iWork apps cannot open any iWork '08 or earlier files. I suggest that you buy a retail copy of iWork '09 from a third party such as Amazon or eBay & then update to the new iWork apps in the Mac App Store. You might check this link for the iWork '09 trial. I have no idea if it is still available.
If you’ve already purchased the new iWork apps in Mavericks, you can use this trick to get Numbers 2.3. If you still have access to a Mac running Mountain Lion. It must be Mountain Lion or Lion. Snow Leopard won't work. If the iWork '09 apps are installed, compress them & delete the originals. Launch the Mac App Store & click on the 'install' buttons under the iWork apps. You will get a message that you can't install the new version on this Mac but it will offer to download the previous version for you. Voilá, you have the self-contained apps that you can copy to another Mac.

I've a very important document which I can't open anymore: You need a newer version of Numbers to open this spreadsheet.

I figured out that it doesn't matter, actually it is Qsync, but other prgrams such Sugar Sync  create teh same problem
The sync program adds a suffix to the files insite the numbers container
When looking at the files inside the Numbers file/folder, I saw this (note: Alphonse is the name of my computer):
    drwxr-xr-x@ 9 thibaut  staff   306B Mar 14 09:21 .
    drwxr-xr-x  8 thibaut  staff   272B Mar 14 09:30 ..

    drwxr-xr-x  2 thibaut  staff    68B Mar 14 09:21 Data
    -rw-r--r--@ 1 thibaut  staff   262K Jan  3 13:21 Index (from Alphonse).zip
    drwxr-xr-x  5 thibaut  staff   170B Mar 14 09:21 Metadata
    -rw-r--r--@ 1 thibaut  staff   101K Jan  3 13:21 preview (from Alphonse).jpg
    -rw-r--r--@ 1 thibaut  staff   1.4K Jan  3 13:21 preview-micro (from Alphonse).jpg
    -rw-r--r--@ 1 thibaut  staff    11K Jan  3 13:21 preview-web (from Alphonse).jpg
I renamed the files to remove the suffix, like this:
    -rw-r--r--@ 1 thibaut  staff    11K Jan  3 13:21  preview-web.jpg
    drwxr-xr-x@ 9 thibaut  staff   306B Mar 14 09:32 .
    drwxr-xr-x  8 thibaut  staff   272B Mar 14 09:30 ..
    -rw-r--r--  1 thibaut  staff    26B Mar  4 14:31 .LSOverride
    drwxr-xr-x  2 thibaut  staff    68B Mar 14 09:21 Data
    -rw-r--r--@ 1 thibaut  staff   262K Jan  3 13:21 Index.zip
    drwxr-xr-x  5 thibaut  staff   170B Mar 14 09:21 Metadata
    -rw-r--r--@ 1 thibaut  staff   1.4K Jan  3 13:21 preview-micro.jpg
    -rw-r--r--@ 1 thibaut  staff   101K Jan  3 13:21 preview.jpg
That fixed the problem and the file now opens correctly in Numbers 3.
You can take the numbers file into a windows machin, the file is shown as a folder and then remive teh suffix.
and like magic the file can then be opend  in Numbers V3.1

  • Can I open and use a downloaded Excel Spreadsheet?

Can I open and use a downloaded Excel Spreadsheet?
    <Re-Titled By Host>

LibreOffice will not run Excel macros (read below) without some work, it's not a good solution, I also do not think that the free online version of MS Office (comes with OneDrive) has VBA, so no macros there either.
Bottom line is if you want to run macros from Excel, you'll need Excel. Preferably the Windows version (the Mac version may be better than Pages, but it's a toy in comparison to the real Excel)
Macros in Microsoft Office and LibreOffice
With a few exceptions, Microsoft Office and LibreOffice cannot run the same macro code. Microsoft Office uses VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) code, and LibreOffice uses Basic code based on the LibreOffice API (Application Program Interface) environment. Although the programming language is the same, the objects and methods are different.
The most recent versions of LibreOffice can run some Excel Visual Basic scripts if you enable this feature at LibreOffice - PreferencesTools - Options - Load/Save - VBA Properties.
If you use macros in one of the applications and want to use the same functionality in the other application, you must edit the macros. LibreOffice can load the macros that are contained within Microsoft Office files and you can then view and edit the macro code in the LibreOffice Basic IDE editor.
You can choose to preserve or delete VBA macros
Open a Microsoft Office document that contains VBA macro code. Change only the normal contents (text, cells, graphics), and do not edit the macros. Save the document as a Microsoft Office file type. Open the file in Microsoft Office, and the VBA macros will run as before.
You may delete the VBA macros from the Microsoft Office file on loading or on saving.
Choose Tools - Options - Load/Save - VBA Properties to set the VBA macro handling of LibreOffice.

  • When I export my number file in Excel, I can not open the spreadsheet : Invalid Reference, what's wrong ?

When I export my number file in Excel, I can not open the spreadsheet : Invalid Reference, what's wrong ?

"Invalid reference" usually means there is a cell reference in a formula to a cell that does not exist in the document.
In this case, it could mean that your Numbers document uses a feature that is not supported by MS Excel, and because of that, the document cannot be translated into an Excel file.
A more specific answer would require a more detailed description of your Numbers document.

  • Can't open older Numbers spreadsheet

Bought a new Macbook Pro.  Now trying to open an old numbers spreadsheet and it's telling me "This spreadsheet can’t be opened because it’s too old. To open it save it in Numbers '09 first'  The new Macbook Pro is showing version '08.  How do I open this older version?

    Hi warmbeaches,
What version of OS X are you running? Apple menu > About This Mac
**Do not delete Numbers '08, Numbers '09 or Numbers 3 if they are on your machine! **
    You might need them!
All versions will run happily together.
Try App Store to update all versions of Numbers (Numbers '08, Numbers '09 or Numbers 3) to the versions that will work on your current OS X. Previous releases will not be replaced. They will be moved to a sub-folder within your Applications folder. They won't disappear.
Have a look here at this User Tip by Wayne:
Need newer version of Numbers to open file
Numbers 3 (if you have that on your new machine) will not (and can not) open a Numbers '08 document.
Be sure which version of Numbers is trying to open a document.
