CAN'T OPEN SYSTEM PREFS, AGAIN!!!!

THIS IS TOO MUCH!
Yesterday, I could not open my system prefs. I did every thing possible within my actual system, trashed all that could be the problem, did a archived reinstalled, ran Tech Tool, Disk Warrior. Eventually had to do a clean install.
The new prefs opened once for me to change international prefs and then IT'S GONE AGAIN!!!
CAN'T OPEN SYSTEM PREFS AGAIN!!!!
THIS IS KILLING ME ! DOCK BOUNCES BUT NOTHING HAPPENS
HELP!

Laurent/Klaus,
Sys prefs is an app and it's icon can be dragged into the dock. Laurent will have done that. I would suggest to him he, 1) dump the dock icon, drag it from dock and have it go 'poof', 2) Try to launch it and use it from the Apple menu, 3) Try to launch it and use it from the icon in 'Applications', 4) Knowing then you can get it to run drag the 'Applications' icon afresh into the dock.
Could try repairing permissions for the Sys Pref app.

I've repaired my permissions for this volume

    what gives ??

In your Applications folder, select System Preferences, and see what version you have. I have version 7. If you really do have version 2.3, do a backup, boot from the Snow Leopard DVD, and reinstall the system.

  • Can't open system prefs- general

This is ever since the update to 10.7.
When I try to open "General" in the System Preferences
(which looks the old "Appearance" and is still named that way),
    I get an error message...
    error in system preferences
    cant open General prefs.
I tried to delete some plist-files, but did not find the one, that might contain the named error.
Anyone has an idea on the subject ?

    Hi markkanselaar,
Did you have files uploaded to Acrobat.com that are no longer there? If so, please log out and clear the browser cache, and then log back in to https://cloud.acrobat.com/files. If the files still aren't there (and you didn't delete them), then try logging in using another supported browser (System requirements | Acrobat.com).

Thanks for your quick response. I had a look at your discussion... I tried it on a Windows machine and I thought that was compatible with ExFAT?
Therefore I need to attempt to use my external hard drive with a machine that boasts OS X 10.6.5 or above and then it should work?

  • ADMIN CAN'T UNLOCK SYSTEM PREFS!!! THIS IS A BUG, PEOPLE!

Ever since I upgraded to Maverick, I haven't been able to change my locked system preferences. They just won't unlock, no matter what I do. Everywhere I've gone to get some clarity on this problem, all anybody asks is if I'm the Admin, like I'm some kind of moron who doesn't know that if you click the lock and enter your password, the lock will unlock. Yes, I'm the Admin, mine is the only account on my MacBook Pro, everything worked fine before I upgraded, and now what I get is this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubGAD-v_ODs
For those of you who require a visual of the problem to see that it's NOT happening because users just don't know how to work the lock, I beg you…please look at this 7 second YouTube video. Every lock in system preferences behaves just like this. That's the only consistency I've found. I've been researching this for days now and while it seems that tons of people are having the same problem, completely unable to either lock or unlock their preference settings, nobody anywhere seems to have a clue as to how to definitively fix this problem. It's not Maverick because I've read posts from other users who are complaining about the same behavior from Lion and Mountain Lion. I've exhausted what little Unix I know with killall commands and I'm tired of shooting in the dark, trying solutions that work for some people but haven't worked at all for me.
I'm not a new user. I've been using Macs since the first Macs came out, so I know how to click the lock to change my preferences. It's not my keychain as I've already done repairs on that. I've restarted every time I tried something new, but that didn't help. The fixes that I've read people have tried and found success with are not consistent and none of them have worked for me.
I'm just guessing but in my opinion, the most likely reason for this is that something has gone horribly wrong with my permissions. I'm just not sure how to fix that, assuming my permissions are even the problem. And since everything was fine until I upgraded to Maverick, my best guess is that it happened during my last system update. It would explain why sometimes the fixes people are trying work and sometimes they don't. Maybe the update changed different settings for my Mac than the people who've fixed their issue had. I'd love to know if anyone else noticed that the problem started right after a system update, particularly since it's also happening to people who are using older OS versions before Maverick.
But more than that, what I REALLY want to know is how to fix this. I don't want to keep randomly trying stuff. I need a good, clean fix. Since none of the Apple experts here seem to have any idea as to even why this is happening, much less how to solve the problem, I can only conclude that THIS HAS TO BE A BUG and the only fix is yet another system update that patches whatever is making this lock thing happen. Could it be an installer issue that's fouling things up? Could it be a problem with the App Store's delivery of the updates? I sure hope somebody finds a solution real soon, because while I can't unlock my prefs, at least they're locked. I really feel bad for the people who can't lock theirs. I really believe that the two problems are related.
CAN ANYBODY TELL ME WITH ANY CERTAINTY HOW TO FIX THIS AND WHAT TO DO TO KEEP IT FROM HAPPENING AGAIN?!!!
(sorry for all the caps )

    Hi Mac Warrior,
I have the same issue. Just after a restart, everything works but after few minutes, the issue comes back.
Moreover, when I try to switch to another user account, a white screen appears without the possibility to do anything else than using the power button to shut it off.
I hope a fix will come faster.
Not sure that will help but I have error logs when I open User preferences :

  • Can't Open System Preferences...

    Hello,
I have had my Macbook since early Sept. and so far I'm a big supporter! Everything runs great and I haven't had any trouble until now. Recently though, I noticed that I can't open the 'System Preferences' on this machine. When I click on it under the blue apple icon in the upper left corner, nothing happens...
Also, if I go to the Energy Drop-down menu, I can select the preset energy modes without trouble, but when I click on 'Open Energy Saver...', it doesn't open it, but instead opens a finder window that takes me to the /hard_disk/Library/Preferences/ folder, with 'EnergySaver.prefPane' highlighted. (The same thing happens when I click on the Display Preferences in the Displays dropdown menu- it takes me to the same location with 'Displays.prefPane' highlighted).
The system otherwise behaves normally- nothing else seems to be affected- I just can't change any of the settings that I set up some months ago.
I have tried 'Repairing Permissions' (as outlined in other forum articles) multiple times, and have verified the disk using the same utility- everything checks out fine.
Does any one have any suggestions?
    Thanks,

Have you installed any software that adds a Preference pane (Flip4Mac and DivX add new ones, for example)? If so, try uninstalling that software a it may be causing the issue.
Barring that, without being able to create a new account we can try troubleshooting the whole Preferences folder for your user account.
Open ~/Library and drag the Preferences folder to the desktop. Log out and back in and a new one will be created with default settings. If you can open System Preferences now then we know it's definitely one (or more) of the files in the Preferences folder.
This is where it gets fun... and by "fun" I mean "monotonous".
Open a Finder window showing ~/Library/Preferences and another one showing ~/Desktop/Preferences. Move them where you can see them both.
Now drag small groups of 4 or 5 files from ~/Desktop/Preferences to ~/Library/Preferences. After you drag each group of 4 or 5 files, log out and back in and see if you can open System Preferences. If you still can then carry on to the next group of files.
Eventually you'll find that when you put a group of files in, System Preferences won't open again. Remove that group of files and add them back in 1 at a time, logging out and in after each individual file. Eventually you'll isolate it to a single file. Toss that file into the trash.
If I had my Mac I'd see if I could figure out which specific files affect System Preferences and have you pull just those ones. Unfortunately I won't have it for a couple of days.
Remember, if an answer helped you, post back and let us know.

  • Can't open Sharing pref pane. Gives weird error.

Suddenly I can't open my Sharing preference pane. It gives the following error:
"You cannot open Sharing preferences because it doesn't work on an Intel-based Mac."
I haven't run any utilities that remove language packs or architectures. I tried to re-install the 10.5.6 combo update but it says that the updater can't be applied.
Anyone know how to fix this?

Okay, I managed to get the combo updater to install. Don't know why it didn't work before. Then I repaired my permissions.
The Sharing pref pane now opens but it's non-functional (buttons don't respond to mouse clicks) and there are display errors like incorrect or missing text.
I also tried restoring the Sharing pref pane from my Time Machine backup but that didn't make a difference.
So, I think you're right. I need to do a archive and install. What a pain in the *ss that is going to be.

  • Can't open the project again

    Hi there,
unfortunately I have to come back again to solve the same problem as one week ago, but this time with a new project. Here it's the problem of the last weekend:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22096295#22096295
The process described there is not working this time.
I can't open it because FCX keeps quitting unexpectedly after a few seconds opened.
Macbook Pro 2.2 ghz i7, 4gb of ram ddr3, HD is only half full.
    FC 10.0.8 OSX 10.8.3
    Please help!

Btw, I've noticed that throwing the current event to the trash makes FCX work fine. When I put it back the problem comes back. Ok, the problems is there in the event. Now what should i do?

  • Can't open System Preferences after 10.8.4 update

After using the App Store to update from 10.8.3 to the current 10.8.4, I can no longer open System Preference or some of my other vital apps. I repaired permissions after disovering this issue as well as rebooting several times. Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

OS X 10.8.4 has damaged some applications. Reinstall 10.8.4 with the Combo installer > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1659
The Combo installer reduces the risk of damage Mac OS X and it allows you to install this update in a lot of Macs with a single download. If the Combo installer doesn't work, hold Command and R keys while your Mac is starting and reinstall OS X

  • Can't open the file,AGAIN!CRAZY!!

Days before,i can't open a file.Later, with the help from KOENIG,i got the quicklook of it.So i typed the file again,BUT,to the place as before, again,i can't open it !!!! What's wrong ?? Is it a bug of my Pages or something else?

    lastbeethoven wrote:

A bug is a bug! reinstalling will not kill it
and ,give me your "autosave",please, show me the interlink.
    Go to my iDisk:
    <http://idisk.me.com/koenigyvan-Public?view=web>
    Download:
    For_iWork:iWork '09:autoSave_iWork.zip
    Install the script entitled:
    for iWork09 > with zip > autosave&zip4iWork.app
    Tired to press cmd + S ?
    to autosave iWork's documents
paste this script in the Script Editor
    menu > File > Save As…
    uncheck screen at startup
check "Stay Open" (* "Rester en arrière-plan" in French *)
save this script as an Application Bundle
Install it as one of the applications launched at boot_time
from the Accounts PreferencePane (tab Login Items)
Every ten minutes, if Pages, Keynote or Numbers is in use,
the open documents would be saved.
If a document was never saved before,
the "Save" dialog will ask a name to save it.
For enhanced safe, a zipped copy of each document is also created
In fact, the file entitled: autosave&zip4iWork.app
    is ready to install.
I made a bit of surgery so that you will not get its icon in the Dock.
If you want to look at what it does, look in autosave&zip4iWork.applescript.
At this time, I'm busy on a script extracting the text from an Index.file when Pages is unable to decipher it and the pdf is not embedded.

  • Can't open User prefs after SL- ML upgrade

I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion today -- after downloading Mountain Lion, the installer rebooted my computer and thought for a couple minutes before telling me that my disk was damaged, and that I had to repair it.  I used the Snow Leopard install disk to repair it, and then the install went cleanly.  However, now I can't open my Users & Groups preferences pane, getting a Preferences Error: Could not load Users & Groups preference pane.
I then tried to repair permissions, some of which were not correct.  Then I rebooted.  Still no dice.
I notice at the login screen that I no longer have a user icon, too.
I did back up with Time Machine right before I did the install, so I can always restore and then re-upgrade, but I'd rather not if I don't have to.  Everything else is working fine.  Any help is much appreciated!  Thanks!

Aha!  I figured it out!  Command line to the rescue.
The problem was indeed the null user icon.  I found a super old thread referencing dscl, typed "man dscl" in terminal, and then used the following command:
    sudo dscl . -create /Users/username picture /path/to/icon
Voila!  Users & Groups opens now.
Interestingly, if I use dscl to delete the picture, the pane still opens, and just shows a "blank" picture.  Phew!  That was many hours of troubleshooting!  Hope this helps someone in the future.
