Can't open the application (...) because it is no supported by this type of Mac

Hi, I am not sure if I sending this to the right forum. I am becoming increasingly frustrated as recently I am getting more of these messages (as in heading of this question) and I am not sure what to do. The apps I am trying to install meet all the requirements but I cannot open them.
Using:
Model Name:          iMac
  Model Identifier:          iMac4,1
  Processor Name:          Intel Core Duo
  Processor Speed:          2 GHz
  Number Of Processors:          1
  Total Number Of Cores:          2
  L2 Cache:          2 MB
  Memory:          1.5 GB
  Bus Speed:          667 MHz
  Boot ROM Version:          IM41.0055.B08
  SMC Version (system):          1.1f5

  Hardware UUID:          00000000-0000-1000-8000-0016CB860350
Any comment or suggestion would be hugely appreciated. I hope I won't have to use Terminal to sort this problem.
Many thanks in advance.

No Mac with an Intel CPU has ever supported Classic.
I take that back. We have an iMac Core 2 Duo, basically the same as yours. One of the few Mac models with an Intel CPU that shipped with its own Intel version of Tiger, which does indeed support Classic. Tiger was never available in the retail version for Intel Macs; PowerPC only.
So I'm guessing that yes, you are referring to old Motorola 680x0 Classic apps. There is no way to run them in Leopard or later, other than than a third party emulator like Sheepshaver. However, that is only the emulator. To get that to work, you need an Apple ROM, which is illegal for you to own unless you also own the exact same Mac the ROM is from. Beyond that, I've read many reports that it doesn't work all that well.
Kurt: This is the first I have EVER heard of an Intel Mac running Classic natively, without emulation (and I have done quite a bit of research)!  Please reconfirm that this is correct, and if you can reconfirm it correctness, you might want to let the researchers noted in the two links below know about these abilities.
Also, your statement regarding Mac ROMs is too broad and overly restrictive.  The emaculation link below indicates a method for extraction of Classic Mac ROMs from an active Apple download link for a ROMs update.  I just tried the link last night and it is still active.
I always caution those who make such legal pronouncements to exercise caution; as they tend to keep users from solutions that are otherwise legally available.  And I am sure that is not your intention:

and here is some additional information on SheepShaver:
http://www.everymac.com/mac-answers/...ntel-macs.html
I have had considerable success with SheepShaver, running this version of Risk II for the OP of a post on another forum as well as being able to access legacy MORE and WordPerfect files in my archives:

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

I vaguely remember some capability to rollback any updates. Is this true?
Where should I go from here?

First you need to clear out some space on the startup volume. You should have at least 9 GB available. Then do as follows.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it.

  • Firefox can't open the application "because it is not supported on this architecture

"You cannot open the application "Firefox" because it is not supported on this architecture."

Thanks for the link to the system requirements, edmeister. However, my system appears to fit every requirements listed, but still gives the same error message.
Here is what my system profiler tells me about my Imac:
    Mac OS X v. 10.5.8
Processor: 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, which Wikipedia tells me is "x86" processor
    3 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    My Activity Monitor says:
1.87 GB of my system memory free
303 GB of hard disk space free
Is there some explanation why I am being told Firefox 4 is not being supported on this architecture?

  • Director PowerPC processors (PPC ) can't open the application because it is "not supported on this a

I created a projector in Adobe Director 11.5 for the Mac.
For some reason PowerPC processors (PPC ) can't open it because they received a message saying the application is "not supported on this architecture."
And idea if there is a way to make projectors compatible for the Mac PPC processors?
    Thanks,

Check your product version by typing "put the productVersion" into the message panel - if you don't get the response "11.5.9" then update the to latest patch by selecting the Update option from Director's Help menu. (I suspect you already are on 11.5.9, though, otherwise you wouldn't get this problem).
Next, go to the Publish Settings page, and under the projector tab you will notice an option to create the Mac projector as either a "Universal Binary" or an "Intel Binary"
Universal Binary will run natively on PPC Macs, and will run under Rosetta on Intel Macs running up-to-and-including OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard).
Intel Binary will run on all Intel Macs running OSX 10.5 and upwards.
Rosetta is a virtualisation layer built into OSX versions up to 10.6; It allows programs written for PPC to run on Intel Macs. Rosetta was dropped from OSX 10.7 (Lion), so a UB projector won't work on Lion.
    Hope that helps

I've read your recommended work around, that said to trash all previous versions of Firefox, I've done so and now have no browser other than Safari.

Beginning with Firefox 4, Macs must have an Intel x86 processor (which you do NOT have; '''''yours is a PPC Mac''''') '''''<u>and</u>''''' OSX 10.5 or higher.

    Hi steverl1,
This error message means that Photoshop CC you have is not compatible with your Mac.
You can check the system requirements from this link

If your mac has a core duo processor then it will not support 64-bit apps the processor for your Mac should be core 2 duo.

  • Just downloaded mavericks, now iPhoto won't load because of an error message that says "You can't open the application "IPhoto" because it is not supported on this type of Mac" . I have a 17" MacBook Pro, mid 2010 model running 2.53 GHz and Intel Core I5,

My IPhoto is no longer working at all, I'm getting an error message that says - "You Can't open the application "IPhoto" because it is not supported on this type of Mac". I also loaded Mavericks onto my other MacBook Pro 17", mid 2009 model and everything works fine. I would think that the newer Mac would easily work with IPhoto. Also, when I try to download from the App Store, it asks for my Apple ID and Password, I enter it, and then the little spinning color wheel just spins forever, with nothing ever happening. I tried downloading the IPhoto Upgrade but it never actually downloads, HELP!!!

What version of iPhoto do you have installed?  Is if one of the versions shown as not compatible in this screenshot?
If it is then go to the App Store and download iPhoto 9.5.  It will be free if you have an iPhoto 9 or later verson currently.

I copy pasted this from the developers website for the minimum requirements of your device: Macintosh® OS X 10.4 – 10.5, PowerPC G4, G5 or Intel Core Duo processor, 800 MHz processor or higher, 256 MB RAM, CD/DVD-ROM drive, 300 MB free hard disk space, Video card with 32 MB of video RAM, 1024 x 768 24-bit color display, Speakers, keyboard & mouse.
Does a macbook pro meet these requirements?

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know some details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is you library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?
