Can't open timeline or canvas in FCE HD

I was halfway through my video, which is made up of 2 projects, but then I switched between them, and the timeline and canvas had disappeared and it wont let me open either of them for that project, any help?

Usually this is because you've got graphics that are cmyk or grayscale not RGB, or that are larger than 4000 by 4000 pixels. Move them on your hard disk so fcp can't find them and make them rgb and resize to an acceptable pixel dimension.

Suddenly find I can't open timeline window in FCP 7 project

Does anyone know why i don`t se the timeline or canvas in FCE 4 when i open old projects? I just bought the new Macbook Pro (model 8,2) and got this problem. The projects i try to open was made on a old macbook. is there a setting or something on the new Macbook Pro? I only see the viewer and brownser.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
You don't have a Sequence open, so there's nothing for a Canvas or Timeline to display. Doubleclick on a Sequence in your Browser and those windows should reappear.

Can you open a Final Cut Pro project file (6.0.6) in Final Cut Express (v4)

I am working on a project in Final Cut Pro (v 6.0.6) and I need to pass it off to a colleague who only has Final Cut Express (v 4). The media in the project is DVNTSC.
I went to the Apple store at the Stonestown Mall in San Francisco today and they assured me that my colleague would be able to open my FCP project file in his FCE program... but I'm skeptical.
Can you really open a FCP project file in FCE?
Could somebody who has both confirm this for me?

Under very rare circumstances can you open an FCP project in FCE. It almost never works and is not supported by Apple.

FCE project won't open timeline, browser, etc

Hi guys,
Suddenly when I try to open a FCE project, it only plays the finished project. The browser, timeline, canvass, etc are blank like a new project. Theres no way I can do additional editing.
The only project that opens normally is one which was never completed, never exported as a Quicktime movie. Help!

Probably, by mistake, you are opening the exported .mov (even if the extension is not visible) in place of the FCE project. When you double click a .mov created by exporting a sequence from FCE, the .mov opens in FCE by default, but it does not have any timeline nor canvas.
If you want to continue editing you must retrieve the FCE Project file (.fcp extension if FCE 3.5) ed open that one.

Final cut pro x is open, but cannot see browser, timeline or canvas?

Basically, when I open final cut it acts as if it is opening and then nothing happens. However it is definately open as I can click on the toolbar to do stuff like 'new project' under file etc but when I do, nothing happens again. It's almost like it's working, but everything is invisible. I've seen stuff that only talk about the timeline or canvas being closed, however the solution to these is fixed through going to the browser, which in my case is also missing. I do not have it under another desktop and I've tried deleteing the system preferences etc. I feel like it's something really stupid that I'm not picking up on. Can someone please help?

Im having the same problem and this is what it looks like. I can see the tool bar at top but thats about it.

Opens with no timeline or canvas

Half the time my program opens with no canvas or timeline window. If i go to the 'window' and set to standard it still fails to come up. Also in "window menu" the canvas and timeline quick keys are not 'bold' so i cannot click on them individually to open. HELP ITS FRUSTRATING THE HECK OUTTA ME !!!

I have been using Final Cut pro v6 without any problems but recently had to reinstall. Since then I can't open and view all my Quicktime clips. They appear white in timeline which means you can hear audio but not view picture. Any tips?

I have been using Final Cut Pro without any problems - v6 - for ages. I recently had a hardware issue and had to reinstall the software. Since then I can't open most of my QT clips in my fcp project. They appear as white clips - audio only no pictures. There are a few QT clips you can view as regular thumbnail images and they play ok. What's the issue? I have fcp v6.0.6 and QT v7. Any thoughts on what to do next?

Yes I did software updates which updated fcp to 6.0.6 and QT to version 7.7. That's as far as updates have taken me although i have requested daily updates. I forgot to say the clips don't play in QT view either. Again sound but no pictures when they are played.

Can't open a project begun by another user account

I began a project and imported an XML file from iMovie08 -- not a bad way to go thru an initial pick-and-sort. I trimmed a bunch of clips and saved the project -- I have a second account on the computer that has an iPhoto library that I want to incorporate now. I want to switch users on the same computer and continue with the project.
So I saved the project, switched users, and copied the .fcp file, to get the ownership/permissions right.
Now user #2 'owns' the .fcp file but I can't 'open' it in FCE4. I get, "This project is unreadable or may be too new for this version of Final Cut." Any hints how to move between users? The video source files are on an external disk and it seems willing to share them among users.
(Has anyone else noticed that the forum 'search' function seems to have vanished?)

clips: Yes, only the sequence appears in FCE. Once open in the timeline you can drag a clip into the browser if you want to save it or use it more than once.
warnings: I followed your advice and then struggled further. Deleting the prefs and unmounting the external drive still returned the "project is unreadable..." message. If/when the files are online then the second message appears, too.
sequences: FCE will produce a 960x540 AIC 29.97 sequence if that's what you drop into a new/empty sequence. I've made a couple of other short clips with iMovie08 XML and there was no complaint. Capturing the 960x540 format saves a ton of space and the result is better than DV conversions. iDVD, Front Row, and QT playback seem okay with the format, too.
Primary account is still okay with this project/sequence. And the secondary account can open the original XML file from iMovie, so it's something about sharing .fcp files among users.
Maybe I'll try to drag all of my 960x540 clips into a DV sequence and see what happens.

Where'd my timeline and canvas go?

I just tried to open up a project in progress by going to File-->Open recent. When the project opens up there is no timeline or canvas. I tried going to window-->arrange-->standard, but they still don't appear. If I just look in window, timeline and canvas are grey, not black.
I'm sure (I hope) the solution is quite simple, but at the moment I'm stuck and can't work on the (nearly completed) project.

Working on my first project with FCE, I had a file in the Bin called "Sequence 1" that showed a duration of 00 and zeros across the board, so I figured that I had hit a wrong key combination and created a spurious file. I cleared it
Immediately, my Canvas and Timeline disappeared, and they are greyed out in the Windows menu.
How do I get them back? Restore to before the last 4 hours of capture? <sigh>

The basic principle is you have to have at least one sequence open for the timeline and canvas to display - otherwise, there is no reason for them to hang around and they wander off for a well deserved break.
If you close a project's only open sequence, the icon for it will still be in the Browser. Double clic on it and all should return. the only time you loose edits is when you close FCP and do not save changes. As long as FCP remains open, you should be good to go.
Also, this is a good opportunity to check your AUTO SAVE settings. Set them to what you are willing to lose should the system crash. 15 min works for me.

Just started using FCE4. My timeline and canvas windows disappeared and are grayed out in the Windows>arrange section. How do I get them back?

Had same problem a month ago. Fixed by this instruction
"Close FCE and go to Home > Library > Preferences. Trash any file (not folder) that has a name including FinalCutExpress or FinalCutPro. Now find the folder Final Cut Express/Pro User Data in the Prefs folder and open it. Trash Prefs, Prof Cache, Obj Cache (sometimes called MOA and POA Cache). Then, of course, repair permissions".

Do you still have legacy FCP? If you not you need to find someone who will open the project in FCP6.0.6 or later. Export an XML file of the project. Use 7toX to convert it to an XML format that works with FCPX. Import the converted XML file to FCP.

Can't open project on External Harddrive

I'm using iMovie 5.0.2 and working on a project that is saved on an external hard drive.
After 6 hours of editing, the power cord came out of the hard drive. I connected everything and tried to save the project. I then got scared and stopped the saving. Now I can't open the project. I can't save it to another part of the hard drive and open it. Every time I try to open the movie it says :
A project file is missing.
The file "_" couldn't be opened
and is being skipped. Click Ignore All
to skip any remaining missing file messages.
The iMovie quits. If I can find the files- all won't be lost. Plus, I have a high res quicktime file saved of the raw footage. But, I would like NOT to lose that 6 hours of work.
Can I open this file? Did I mess it up? Where are the video clips saved? I can't find them. I have iMovie on my laptop and the project saved on the hard drive.
Thanks for any help. This is why I'm so done with video Just a few more projects to do. After 15 years this type of crap drives me crazy.

Don't do anything more with your iMovie. Don't try another save, as that can write over your last good saves. You MAY be able to retrieve the prior save. Hopefully, you saved as you went along during these 6 hours so you can retrieve a very recent saved version.
(These types of accidents have made me realize the importance of backing up my movies-in-progress as I am editing them. I did not do this in the past, and now I try to do it at least at the end of each editing session so that not all would be lost. I had an external drive fail suddenly and all of my movies were gone. Fortunately, I was able to reimport the original footage, but frequent saves would have been best).
In iM6, you can access the project files by control or right-clicking on the star icon and selecting 'show package contents' to let you see the movie files. One or more of the icons will have a tilde ~ or several of them. Those are prior versions of the iMovie, and can be used to get back to a prior save.
In iM5, I think you can just directly open the project files and see the movie files as ~ files with the name as "yourmovie.mov" It might be in a Cache folder and might be called "Timeline Movie.mov." If you don't see anything like a Cache folder, try doing the process for iM6 above. If you see multiple .mov files with ~ and then more ~~ or even ~~~ those are more versions. You may have to try one or more of these to find the latest one possible.
Once you locate the .mov version of your movie, open a new iMovie project and drop in one of the .mov~ movies into it and see if it works. If so, continue editing with this one. This version will be all in one clip, so more editing is a bit more difficult, but not impossible and at least you will have some of your work back.
It's crucial you NOT save the messed-up project right now, for that will destroy the good QuickTime movie, replacing it with a bad "empty" movie.
