Can't open .WMV files

After years of using QuickTime with Flip4Mac to open .WMV files, suddenly it won't work. Not sure if this is a QuickTime or Flip4Mac issue, but thought I'd post here first. I have the most current version of both apps. FWIW, the only thing I've done recently (since last successfully viewing a .WMV file) is install 10.6.2, which shouldn't be the culprit or it would be headlined all over the internet. Here's what I get when trying to open a .WMV file:
"The document “xxxxxx.wmv” could not be opened"
Thanks for any suggestions.

Unfortunately, the latest version of QuickTime does not have the ability to export using third-party plug-ins, however Apple has made QuickTime 7 available to install alongside QuickTime X. You can install it from the Snow Leopard install disk or by running a Quartz (*.qtz) file.
QuickTime 7 will install to your Applications/Utilities folder.

I get an error message saying 'Quicktime player must be installed to run this application'

    Any help appreciated

I had this problem. Double clicking the WMV file produced the message you had. However, if I open by dragging the WMV file onto the QuickTime X icon in the dock it did indeed open.
I then looked at the WMV's Get Info window and found that it was set to open in WMV Player by default. Obviously I do not have WMV Player installed. The drop down menu on this setting did have QT Player as the other option. When I changed the option to QT Player as default the "Change All" button became active. Previously it had been greyed out. Things have been OK since, but I have not tried it on any new WMV files.

This applies to newly downloaded as well as previously downloaded and played files. Qtime version is 7.6.4. Changing extension to .mov doesn't work. Any assistance appreciated.

macfriedchikkin's reply would make sense to you if you were trying to open a camera, but if you are trying to view streming media from a web site that is a different story. It helps to be very specific about what you are tyring to do on these forums.
I belive you would go into Firefox Preferences menu and tell it  to use VLC as the application to play WMV files. I'm still running Tiger,  however, so I can't tell you if it the latest version works wel that way. The Tiger version doesn't seem to, but a lot may have changed since then. (I'm only just getting around to installing Leopard next week now that there are too may apps I can't run on Tiger. ) Perhaps someone else on this forum can better help you set  up the player in your browser.
Or you can cut out the middleman and give VLC the direct video URL:
Choose Open File from the File menu and paste in the URL of the video, say,
    http://azul.streamguys.com/auduboncal-1
    or http://azul.streamguys.com/auduboncal-2
Your media should play this way. Dont forget to save the playlist for later.
I'l keep investigating on my end, and yes, I'm also  encouraging certain people who are streaming windows media in to switching to a different format

  • Can't open WMV files in Quicktime. How can I reinstall Quicktime?

For some reason I am unable to open WMV files in Quicktime even though I have Flip4Mac Player Pro (WMV files played fine in Quicktime until recently).
ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Quicktime X is a great little piece of software. However, Quicktime X is very finicky on which codec/file format it can decode/play.
Luckily, there are DOZENS of alternative video/media players and extensions available for the Mac. Some of them are even FREE. Some of the better FREE ones include...
    PERIAN (quicktime extension)
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/22923/perian
    QUICKTIME 7.6.6
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923
    VLC Media Player
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/5758/vlc-media-player
    NICEPLAYER
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15136/niceplayer
... And if none of those work, there is a possibility that, that video file may be corrupted.

  • How can I open .wmv files in a browser on my MacBook Pro?

I know that a person that owns a Mac can open .wmv files in third-party programs such as Flip 4 Mac (Flip Player), but is it possible to open .wmv files in a browser?
    Thanks,
    Karen

You may open word processing documents using Apple's Pages. Numbers may open spreadsheets. Nothing appears to open databases, however.
If you have access to an older system that runs AW6, then you can export your documents to a compatible format for newer applications.

  • Can't open wmv files on my mac leopard

I have Mac OSX Leopard. I tried to download wmv file to my mac and they did not open.
Then I downloaded flip4mac in order to watch windows media files.
After I downloaded flip4mac the movie goes to my downloads but they wont open or play. When i click on it (downloaded icon, it just kind of grow a bit biger, comes back and that's it.
Could someone try to simplify this for me since I am new in Mac Technology.
    Thanks.

You'll normally get the fastest and most accurate responses if you ask in the QuickTime for Mac forum.
Answering quickly, there are codecs in Windows Media that have never been ported to Mac OS X. This particularly applies to any copy-protected content; there is no way to play any WMV that's copy-protected in Mac OS X.
Beyond that, there's not much we can say without knowing more about these videos. If you can tell us where you got these videos, we may be able to offer additional suggestions.
    Regards.

  • Can't open .wmv file

Trying to open/play .wmv files; I have the latest version of flip4mac installed and appears to otherwise be working fine. These files do have the .wmv extension, however when I click on them to play/open I get the following message "the movie/file could not be opened. The movie/file is not in a format that QuickTime Play understands".
    thx
    Mike

I'm able to open on PC at work, so I don't think that would happen if files were corrupt. How can you tell what codec version they were encrypted with? I checked in "get info" to verify file ext type and they are .wmv.

  • Can not open .wmv file attachment.

I am using an iPad 2 with OS6. I have an email message with an attached .wmv file.  When double taping the file a window opens with a list of 6 different apps to be selected to open the file. Dropbox, Box, Evernote, Printer Pro, Mail, and Good Reader.  EverNote downloaded the file but the file did not open.  Since this is a movie, it should be opened in QuickTime.  Strange.

Install free OPlayer and try again.

From what I have read that Life Frame offers .avi, .asf, and .wmv files. Those are just file extensions. The video compression and audio compression of the file are the first things to define.
If you cannot find that information in your User Guide, then please put the problem video file through the gpsot utility to find out
    Video (Name, Codec, and Status)
    and
    Audio (Name, Codec, and Status).
    http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
and whatever other information you can find there, example, frame size, frame rate, etc.
You could also try recording to .avi instead of .wmv, but there again we would be up against the video and audio compression used.
Let us see what file information you can put together so that you can try to resolve the issue.
We will be watching for your results.
    Thank you.

  • Can't open .wmv file type

HELP! I can't seem to open email attachments from friends when they're a .wmv.
I've tried the drag into an open Safari window - no worky.
I've downloaded the free version of FLIP4MAC - no worky.
Have not downloaded Windows Media Player 9 for Mac yet (and really don't want to).
Any ideas?????? Thanks in advance for any help!

I'd suggest you use VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html). It plays close to all file formats without problems and it's free. So except for the above mentioned case it will solve your problem.

  • Can't open MOV files in FCP: "Searching for movie data in file..."

I know this has been posted before, but none of them seem to match up to what I'm all of a sudden dealing with. I have 4 MOV files that I'm converting to WMV. Movie 1 & 2 exported fine. Now, however, any time I try to open another MOV file, I get an error that it's "Searching for movie data in file..." and the file name is ALWAYS the same. The weird thing is, the file it's looking for is none of the 4 movies I'm working with. So how did the first two work and this pop out of nowhere??
I have cleared out the render cache. Dumped all the cache and prefs files I can find, etc. Restarted the machine. Started FCP with the Option key held down.
I've searched everywhere, but people usually seem to come across this error while opening FCP (I'm running 6.0.6). This only happens when I open a MOV file (oddly, I can open WMV files in FCP without issue).
    HELP!

So, I open the movies in QT and the EXACT same thing is happening. So it appears the guy who created the videos did something when he was making them (probably made a reference files along the way). I'm having him re-export the MOV files.
So, it's not a FCP issue.....

  • HT3775 can't play wmv file on quicktime?

I can't play .wmv files on quicktime.  I installed both QuickTime MPEG2 and Flip4Mac WMV hoping that this would solve the problem but it did not.  When trying to play any audio .wmv file I get an error box stating "the document (filename).wmv could not be opened.  The movie is not in a format the QuickTime Player understands.  You may need to install additional software to open this type of file".  Anyone know what I might need here?

Hmm, Perian should provide flv playback in Quicktime. Maybe you need to update Perian? I used to always use Perian but since upgrading to Lion I have not installed it and now rely on VLC for non-apple standard media playback. Deluxe can handle the flv-format.It will convert flv to mov. Hope it helps

  • My Quicktime won't open .wmv files

Two of us downloaded the same .wmv files sent in e-mails from friends. When she clicks on hers, Quicktime plays it. When I click on them, they open in TextEdit. When I try to open them through Quicktime, it says: The file is not a movie file.
How can I open these files?
    Thanks.

    Hi
    Flip4Mac
It is an Add-on to Quicktime for Windows files.
There is a free base product as well as Paid for Extensions to that base product.
