Can't open .zip, only starts .cpgz cycle

Firstly, sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong spot, I'm new. But I also heard this problem may be due to leopard.
I was emailed a .zip file that I really want to open but when I try to unzip it only creates a .cpgz file then then ..cpgz or another ..2.zip
I've tried double clicking the .zip and opening normaly and stuffit and opening it in windows xp
BTW it's a file I'll need to open in my xp partition if that makes a difference, (unfortunately I sometimes need to use xp as some apps such as autocad don't run mac) i just don't connect xp to the internet.

My user just encountered this zip/cpgz cycle as well, and I think this is what happened.
He was attempting to download a zip file that was only available via BitTorrent. So he downloaded the corresponding 24 KB torrent file and double clicked it. This opened Opera (his default application for torrent files), and the actual 62 MB zip file started downloading. But unlike a conventional downloading file that ends in .download and shows a small progress bar in the icon, the BitTorrent downloading file looks indistinguishable from a completely downloaded file: it ends in .zip and has the zip icon even though it is still downloading. So my user was attempting to unzip a 62 MB file when only about 50 MB had downloaded.
As of this writing, the file is still downloading. But I suspect once completely downloaded, he will be able to unzip the file normally using Stuffit Expander.

Plesae help...Starting to drive me nuts!

    Hi Booher,
Zip files are cross platform. Doesn't matter if it's an a PC or a Mac. Either can open or create them. But .exe files are Windows only. An .exe is an application compiled for MS DOS or Windows, as are .com files. They won't work at all on a Mac without running them in a Windows environment such as Virtual PC.
The only exception is if the .exe is a self extracting archive created on a PC. That is, a .zip file converted to an .exe so if the person the compressed files are sent to doesn't have a way to open a .zip file, it will run as a program to do the same thing. These, OS X can open and extract as if it were still a .zip file.
You mention that one of the .zip files extracted its contents as a file named setup.exe. This will not work directly in the Mac OS in any way, as it is a Windows application/program.

  • Can't open .zip attachment in Adobe Reader 8.1.2

    Dear all,
In Adobe Reader 8.1.2 I can't open zip files attached to pdf files any more. I followed some hints in the knowledge base but none of them solved my problem. The registry editing suggestions for rel. 7 doesn't apply to version 8.1.2. and setting the trust option didn't help as well.
In brief what are the steps in order to allow reader 8.1.2 to open zip attached to pdf files???
Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestion.

    > The registry editing suggestions for rel. 7 doesn't apply to version 8.1.2
You can use the suggestions for version 8.1.2. Search the registry for cDefaultLaunchAttachmentPerms.

  • You can't open the application Start.osx because PowerPC applications are no longer supported.

what does this error message mean? I am trying to use a disc that came along with a book I ordered for studying. However, when I try and run it, this is the error message I receive. "You can't open the application Start.osx because PowerPC applications are no longer supported." Anything I can do to fix this and make it work?????

Many educational CDs have not been upgraded due to lack of funds in the educational market to pay for such updates.
This situation is due primarily to the fact that one of the major political parties in this country favors tax cuts to the rich while cutting federal educational support funding (or eliminating the federal Department of Education altogether).
However, you can restore Rosetta and run your educational CD if you install Snow Leopard Server ($20) into Parallels (up to $79) for use in Lion/Mt. Lion/Mavericks:

  • Can't open zipped files

I can't open zipped files that have been sent to me. I have found the files I saved in Archive Utility and when I try to open them a dialogue box says the default app is BOMArchive Helper. If I click that something I cant read flashes on the screen but nothing opens. If I try to open with Word a dialogue asks what I want to open with giving options such as MS-DOS Text, RTF,HTML document etc. If I click on these a word document opens full of gooble de gook

Ah! Different situation. I just noticed that you're running Tiger and posted to the Snow Leopard forums. If you're running Tiger, then you might be right, but since I haven't used it for almost four years, all I can suggest is that you post to the appropriate forums: http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=177

  • I can't open zip files.

I can't open zip files.  Archive utility flashes and disappears.  Archive utility does not seem to be in the utility folder.  Tried repairing permissions and verifying disk.

Archive Utility is a System-level component; it doesn't live in the Utilities folder.
Wher did the .zip files come from? There may be a problem with the files themselves.
You can try using the Unarchiver, but  I'd expect AU to handle them OK.
When you say it won't open them, are you sure it hasn't? It doesn't open a window with the contents usually - it simply puts the enclosed contents in the same location as the .zip file. Is there a folder or .dmg that looks like it may be related?

  • Suddenly Can't Open PDFs. Starting about three days ago firefox will no longer open any PDFs. I get a blank page in a new tab.

Suddenly Can't Open PDFs in Firefox. Starting about three days ago firefox will no longer open any PDFs. I get a blank page in a new tab. Nice timing, with finals and everything where I need to view PDFs of practice tests.

Mozilla Firefox did not do their job, here. I am an editor and am constantly online. Now, I have to go to Safari to download PDFs. I reinstalled an earlier version of Firefox to get rid of the problem, but somehow Firefox has deactivated my PDF download feature. This is a total wreck and I am so angry I could spit. Stop launching new products until you have fully tested them. Customers are not your guinea pigs. Please fix this now- and fire a few idiots on the way- the ones who let this happen.

  • Outlook 2010 can't open zip files in public folders.

The temp folders are empty.  This is a new install.

This is very odd.  I have a new install of Win 7 with Outlook 2010 and I can't open a zip file attached to an email in a public folder.  It is not isolated to a single zip file, machine or user either.  I can open .pdf, xls, .txt and others OK.
    Ideas?
    Thanks!

  • Can't open zip disk on my iMac

I have an iMac with OS 10.6.8. I recently tried to open an old Iomage zip disk, but it wouldn't open. I got a message saying that I can't open the application using Zip Disks because the Classic environment is no longer supported. Does anyone have any ideas of how to get my iMac to open my zip disks so I can transfer the data on it to a flash drive?

Re: Classic Environment - Games for Macs and Ver 10.5
Classic is not supported using Leopard, Snow Leopard or Intel Macs. Some users do use Sheep Shaver, with varying degrees of success. Many games do not work properly in classic mode. They require the Mac to be booted in OS 9 (or below). Your best solution is to buy a used Mac capable of running OS 9.  Cheers, Tom

  • Can't open Read-Only Word Files

    Hi,
I can't open word files that windoze has arked as Read-Only with pages 08. I get the error message, "the document FILENAME couldnt be opened."
    Anyone got ideas..

    Hi folks,
I've solved the problem, so if anyone else is having the problem, I solved it this way. The files were on a memory stick, so when I read this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106712 it became obvious that if a dragged the files into my Documents folder OS X should give the correct file permissions automatically and it did. Well done Apple.
The link also gives info on how to do this manually if you need help.
    Dave.

  • Can't open .zip, becomes .zip.cpgz

Can't get a .zip file to open. It becomes a .zip.cpgz, then try to open that and it becomes a .zip again.
Somewhere I read an app called Ditto would open a .cpgz file and was in Mac OSX but can't find it. Stuffit does not work, Spingy does not work. Also read that a .cpgz format was a Mac format. If it is why can't I open the file?

It is not a competition to see who can offer the best advice, it is the desire of responders to offer advice that is helpful and pertinent to the problem presented. I am glad that your problem corrected itself but puzzled by your insistence that
this site insists on someone getting credit for solving, so...............
No one is insisting on getting credit, but it is helpful to others with a similar problem to know what the solution was. If your problem corrected itself and you know how, please let us know. If no one solved your problem, then don't award any solved points, as this will only serve to confuse others.

  • Acrobat 9 Pro can't open zip attachment in Adobe tutorial PDF

I'd like to go through one of the CSS tutorials here on the Adobe site, and have downloaded the relevant PDF which includes a .zip attachment for the source files needed to follow the tut.
Problem is, Acrobat 9 Pro keeps telling me "Acrobat cannot open the file attachment because your PDF file attachment settings do not allow this type of file to be opened."
The Acrobat Help suggested fix - setting the file to allow it to open attachments - doesn't work. I also set StuffIt Expander to be the default app for expanding zip files in the Mac OS, to no avail.
Data point: I'm running the latest update of Leopard on one of the new MBPs.
The recalcitrant PDF is linked from this page: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/designing_for_web_05.html - "Getting your web design to the browser'.
Anybody else encountered the same problem and found a fix?
    Thanks,
    Peter

No product should force security on its users without providing them any practical way to override. Web browsers, email clients, and operating systems warn you of potentially dangerous files and then let the client make the choice. What if it's a zip file from a trusted source full of harmless text documents? Too bad - because Acrobat says so. Acrobat makes no attempt to examine the zip file to see if perhaps its contents are dangerous - it just sweepingly decides zips are far too dangerous to let the user have any voice in the matter. I fundamentally disagree.
Notice that I've attached a zip file to this post. Adobe allows zips on their forums but not in their PDF documents. Adobe: If you've deemed zip files safe enough to be hosted and delivered in your own forums, why have you decided they have no place in a PDF?
I think Adobe got this one wrong - and I cast a vote that they loosen the noose on zip files on a future release. I'd like to hear other users' thoughts on this issue. Adobe is good at listening to their users - so tell them what you think on this issue - I've posted this article as a feature request here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/520515 - reply to it that thread and share your viewpoint.
    Cheers,
    Dan
