Can't paint at full opacity in layer mask in CS6 64 bit windows 7

A problem has developed in my photoshop CS 6 64 bit on windows 7. I can't paint at full opacity in a layer mask. It is like an 75 % opacity brush. I have gone back to the default brushes soit is not the particular bursh. My brush settings are all at 100%, mask density is 100% , the blend mode is normal,-can't think of where else to look for the solution. The brush works just fine when I am not in a layer mask.
I updated the graphic card driver and also the wacom intuos driver. It has to be somewhere in photoshop CS6 as when I go into my older version photoshop, cs5, the mask opacity works works at 100 % opacity
Any ideas of what to do next.

I am having a similar problem that I need help with.  I just loaded CS6 for the first time ever last week and have been tinkering around with photo editing.  I am trying to use an action I downloaded to whiten the whites of the eyes and teeth.  When I run the action I cannot paint with the soft white brush.  I hit backslash and it shows no work completed, just a red background.  I have everything selected at 100% opacity (brush and action layer).
A couple days ago I was able to use the brush tool to darken the background by loading an action and paiting on.  Now I can't do that anymore.
I can use my brush for other tasks.  I am so confused.  I would greatly appreciate any insight.

  • White paint will not work in Layer Mask

I just installed PS CS6 and when I apply a layer mask to a layer I can paint black to hide the layer, but when painting white to restore the layer there is no effect.  White paint will not restore the layer or modify the mask at all.  The black paint works as usual to hide the layer, but how do I restore an area in a layer mask if not painting white?
Thanks for any help with this.
    Troy

That was it.  The blending mode for the brush was set to Darken which doesn't affect black, but obviously does affect white.
    Thanks alot!

  • Paint brush not working on layer mask

This is a totally novice question, but...
When working with a layer mask, my paintbrush isn't showing up on the image. I can see the brush strokes on the layer mark in the layers sidebar, but no brush strokes on the image itself.
I know it's just me doing something wrong...can anyone tell me what it is?

I think you are not understanding how layers and layer masks work.
Look at the following illustration.  The layers panel shows that the left of the image (The right is simply to make room for the layers panel and should be ignored) has solid blocks of red, green and blue.  The layer mask in the top layer (red) has a black rectangle which conceals that area of the layer, revealing the underlying layer.
The mnomic we use is 'Black conceals and White Reveals'  So where the layer mask is white, the corresponding area in the layer can be seen, and where black, it is like a window looking through to the layers below.
The Green layer also has a (smaller) black rectangle, so we can see the blue layer below that.
The blue layer has an even smaller rectangle so we can see the checker board background which indicates transparency.

  • Can you designate an image as a layer mask?

I've been wondering if this is possible for a long time -- say I have an awesome grayscale image that I want to use as a layer mask for another layer. Is there a way to make that happen?

Copy your image to the clipboard (i.e. Select All>Copy)
Then Alt or Option click on the layer mask and Edit>Paste

  • How to copy an adjustment layer mask in CS6

I want to use the same adjustment mask twice on the same image. For example I want to use the adjustment mask for curves and possibly saturation. How can I duplicate the mask but keep all effects.

You could put the Adjustment Layers into a Layer Group and use the mask for the Group. That way you'd only have to edit one mask to affect all your Adjustment Layers.

  • I cannot paint or use gradients correctly in layer mask mode

I have my blending mode set to 'NORMAL".  When I paint in black on a layer mask it creates a transparent effect (not hide the image/pattern).  Since the upgrade this has affected both my pc and laptop versions.   I've read through the forums and see a lot of folks having issues with the blending mode set inccorrectly but this seems different.   I'm at a loss and losing time.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Um, painting black on a layer mask is supposed to create transparency (and gray partial transparency).  Unless I'm missing something subtle, it appears to be working correctly from what I can see.
Keep in mind the checkerboard is not really in the document - it's just Photoshop's way of showing you that the layer is transparent.  You can set how that's portrayed in the Preferences - Transparency and Gamut section.
Or you can enable the visibility of your Background layer to see what it looks like when that shows through.

  • Bug? color profiles appear to be affecting layer masks

    Hello,
I am wondering whether I should file the following as a bug?
We are using color profiles that adjust the white point.  When these color profiles are applied to the image we cannot properly paint into layer masks because we cannot access "pure white".  The brightest white we can paint with is a form of grey (aka, we cannot paint back full opacity in a layer mask).  This shows up in the color "chips" as only allowing the brightest value to be a light grey.  The only way to get around this is to turn off our color profile, paint pure white, and then reapply the color profile (which confirms my understanding that "pure white" is supported by the mask channel when a color profile is applied, we just cannot paint it that value when the profile is applied).
As far as I can imagine, color profiles shouldn't be applied to scalar channels like a mask channel, right?
    This affects CS2, CS3, CS4, CS5 and CS6

Ok, I did one more test to see whether I can use the eye dropper tool to select a "pure white" color even if the color picker does not let me do that.  It turns out that I can.
So that is a work around...  I  am simply going to have to have an adjustment layer at the top of my layer pallette (but turned off) that has an all white mask.  Even when it is turned off, I can simply select it, use the eye dropper tool to pick a pure white, and then return to my mask channel of choice and paint in full opacity.
In the mean time, I think the fact that the color profile still affects the color picker when a mask layer is active might be considered a bug.  I'll probably report it as such.

  • Layer Mask not revealing the right colors

Hi I am new to Photoshop CS6, and photoshop in general. I am trying to take a color photograph, turn it to black and white, and reveal a flower in color and the rest is still black and white.
I thought I had done this properly when I added a new "adjustment layer, hue/saturation", reduced saturization to zero, and painted the yellow flower over with black to reveal the yellow flower's color while the rest of the photo is still black and white. And it worked..except when I got to the green stem of the flower. Painting over that with black revealed a yellowish-green stem.
I experimented a little more by painting black on the new layer mask and most of the rest of the color photo comes out wrong. The blue sky shows up like a weird smurf blue, faces are oddly peach/orange and most colors look much different than the originial photo. Yellow seems to be not affected, magenta/pink seems to be OK and blue shows up so-so. But the rest of the colors are messed up.
I know this must be something very basic, but why are the colors showing up odd?
    Thanks

Sounds like you did the right stuff.  You should expect to see the colors revealed where the mask is made black.  I might have used a Black & White adjustment layer rather than Hue/Saturation, as that would give you more control over the grayscale part of the result, but the technique with the mask should be  the same.
Any chance you could take a snapshot of your screen, save as a JPEG, and paste it here?  That will help avoid a whole lot of questions.
I noticed your screen name...  I live in "bokeh".    The weather has turned nice down here after Sandy passed by, eh?

  • Please help with Layer Mask

I have been painting in Photoshop using layer masks. Using the pen tool I would outline my image, control>R-click>select create layer mask, then I would paint as desired. When doing so it would create a grey layer mask background in the layers window and everything would work100%. But now all of a sudden when I do this process the layer mask square turns white and it seems as the mask I have created is inverted. I paint everything but the mask I want. I have no clue how to turn it back to the original grey colour I was using. Please help.

Using the pen tool I would outline my image, control>R-click>select create layer mask,
So are you using a Vector Mask or a Layer Mask?
    Could you post a screenshot?

  • Layer Mask vs Quick selection

hey there, I don' understand the difference between the quick selection tool and the layer mask option. What exactly does a layer mask do? And what are the advantages compared to the quick selection tool?
    thanks in advance

A Layer Mask is used to modify a layer, usually making parts visible and masked parts invisible.
The Quick Selection Tool is one of the many ways to select, or isolate part of an image. A selection can be a step towards producing a layer mask.
Look them up in Help for a more detailed explanation.

  • My full white layer mask is still transparent

This has to be one of those stupid, rookie mistake, but I can't solve it.
I'm using a layer mask, and when I paint black on it, it disappears (as it should), but when I use white, it doesn't get back to full 100% opacity. In the attached picture you can see a black area, where the top part of the mask is painted in white. And it's transparent.
This happens with every picture, every depth of colors. Where do I look? I'm pretty desperate, you know...

Hello Marzia. I see now what you mean. Sorry for misunderstanding the question.
That's indeed weird. The only thing I can think of is that maybe your painting tool (brush settings?) itself is not fully opaque or is not in normal blending mode? What happens if you reset the painting tool?

  • Can't select layer mask, also some tools not working -- in CS2

Photoshop 9.0.2 on WinXP Pro (3 GB RAM; Used space: 18.4GB; Free space: 214GB; Video card: 256MB ATI Radeon X1300PRO)
Hi, I have a couple image layers (each created by merging several others) that each also have a mask attached. I cannot get the layer mask selected on either one. I have found that I can delete the layer mask, and start with a new one and make edits, but it is a one-time shot: once I de-select it I cannot get back to it to make any further changes. (I have only a standard mouse, not a Wacom tablet/pen mouse, nor does anyone nearby, or perhaps even in the building. See: http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bbfe832 )
Also, when I have the layer selected and try to draw on it (in black) with the Brush tool, it paints red. Then I was able to Erase the red brush strokes just a minute ago without disturbing the integrity of the image. However, I just tried it again and more red was painted onto the image layer (in the currently assigned size of the Eraser).
Incidentally, yesterday and this morning I couldn't get the Eraser tool to do *anything* at all.
Everything I *can* do does show up in the History palette.
I also just happened to notice that when I select any layer in the doc that the small frame appears around the thumbnail to indicate it is selected, but that the entire row itself does not become highlighted as it normally does. And when I check the eye to make the layer disappear, the red brush strokes (both from the Brush and Eraser) still show.
I generally work on a network, but after I started having these problems I moved the file to my desktop and have worked from there since early yesterday with apparently increasingly odd issues. I have a co-worker who experienced the same inability to select the layer mask a couple days ago, but his system has since returned to "normal" (and while continuing to work across the network). Thanks!

    >, but obviously need to brush up on the details.
you really should. imo, the quick mask is one of the best and most flexible selection tools available in photoshop! you should either check out the help on it (F1) and/or google for some tutorials.
I set mine (double click the quick mask icon in the tool bar) so that painting black paints a "selection" rather than a "mask" (painting white clears the selection). in that way, the quick mask tool in effect becomes a quick selection tool that can take advantage of all your various brushes and brush effects (opacity, flow etc.) when making or adjusting selections.

  • Painting Sharpness in an Adjustment Layer

Is there a way you can paint in sharpness or blur for that matter?
Can you use sharpness as an adjustment layer?

Very good point, Robert!  I've been meaning to try that out.

It's clear Adobe is working to farm more and more of the grunt work tasks to it (e.g., that Liquify demo video for CS6).  Perhaps we may well see more sophisticated adjustment layers in the future.

  • How can I Copy/Paste a Black & White Photo into a Layer Mask

    I have a landscape picture.
Then I will copy it into another layer and convert it to black and white. I will make some changes to the B&W photo
Then I want this B&W photo to be the layer mask of a "Layer-Multiply" of the original ...
I tried copy and paste as it is, but it doesn´t works
Please help me with the steps or what I am doing wrong.
    Regards
    Roberto

You can paint not only a black and white photo, but also a coloured one.
Once you have copied the photo (Ctrl A and Ctrl C), before trying to paste, be sure that the layer mask is active, Alt click in the layer palette in the mask icon on the right : you get a white screen and the mask icon is shown selected. Only then can you paste into the mask (Ctrl V). To exit the mask view, Alt click again or click in the layer icon on the left.
When you paste a coloured pictures it is automatically converted to grayscale.
