Can't paste password to unencrypted drive

I am experimenting with creating an encrypted .dmg on my mac.  I have created the file in Disk Utility already.  I use 1password and prefer not to use Keychain for storing passwords to sensitive data.  I initially chose a password with 1password and copied it to paste it in the create .dmg dialog box.  It wouldn't paste in the field.  I ended up using the built in generator to create the password.  I then went to Keychain to copy the password to a 1passwor login and deleted the Keychain reference to it.  Thinking I had it all figured out I closed the drive and reopened it and attempted to paste the password.  It won't let me paste it.  Is this is bug?  It seems to force you to use keychain or use something more simple that you can remember which defeats the purpose of this in the first place.

  • Can't paste password in "connect to server" login box

I need to connect to a webDAV site that assigns temporary login passwords to my established ID. (The temp password lasts 8 hours and is 30+ characters long.)
In Leopard 10.5.6, I can't copy the assigned password from the resulting web page and paste it into the "connect to server" login password box. I can, however, paste the password into a text file. (Can't paste that into the box either.)
Pasting the password works with a Tiger installation on another machine and with a crappy XP laptop. I've tried to use it on my Leopard installation in a brand new account with no luck either.
    Huh?

  • Can't paste password after 3.1 update

I used to be able to copy a password from Notes and paste it into the password field of the App Store app. Since updating to 3.1 I can't get the Paste button to come up in the password field any more. Does anyone know whether this is a bug or intentional?

I am using OS 3.1 and I can do it. It must be something with your phone.
All I can suggest is the standard troubleshooting steps in order.
Restart your phone: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then drag the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset your phone: Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    Restore your phone: Restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414

  • Can't paste password for new encrypted disk image.

    Howdy all!
I have been trying to create an encrypted disk image with the Disk Utility, but I'm having trouble with putting in the password.
Using the password assistant, it only fills one of the two password fields, and I cannot copy/paste the password to the other field. If I generate a password elsewhere I cannot paste it into either box as well.
If I switch applications from Disk Utility and come back to the password dialog the menubar says I am still in whatever application I was last (in this case it says Firefox at the very left) and the Edit menu is completely grayed out.
Any idea how to get a non-typeable password into this dialog?
    Thanks for your help.
    Mike

You can paste it in if you use hdiutil to create or mount the disk image (In Terminal.app). That's the
only way to go if you use a "bullet proof monster" password like I do.
To create an encrypted, sparse disk image, open a Terminal window and cd to the directory in which
you want to create the image file. For example:
    cd ~/Desktop
    Then type the command:
hdiutil create -size thesize -encryption -type SPARSE -fs HFS+ thename
    live command example:
hdiutil create -size 1g -encryption -type SPARSE -fs HFS+ myimage
(this will create a 1gigabyte sparse image with the hfs format with the name "myimage.sparseimage"
#note: I love sparseimages and sparsebundles because they mount so quickly#
Above, the size is the maximum size that the volume will ever be able to contain, for example,
660m for 660 megabytes or 1g for one gigabyte. Note that if you want the image file to remain
below a certain size (such as the size of a CD) you must allow for approximately 10% overhead.
Also above, thename is the name of the image file you want to create, not the volume name.
The volume name will be "untitled". Rename as you would any other mounted volume (after it is
    mounted).
You will be asked for a password or phase to secure your file. In terminal you may copy and paste
or use command + V keyboard combo. It will mount normally after that.
I don't use the "Remember password (add to Keychain)" function because my passphrase will be
visible in the Keychain to anyone with physical access to your computer.
Instead I use Terminal to open my new image.
    Open terminal.app, simply type:
    hdiutil attach /path/to/imagefile
    example:
    hdiutil attach /Users/kj/Desktop/myimage.sparseimage
(remember, you can drag and drop the file path into the terminal from Finder)
Terminal will ask for your password, simply cut and paste from your favorite password program
    (such as "1Password").
There is a manual page available; type man hdiutil in the Terminal.
    Enjoy,
    Kj

  • OS 3.1 Bug: Can't paste password into App Store dialog box

I searched for this and didn't see anything...
Since updating my iPhone to OS 3.1, I can no longer paste into the "iTunes Password" dialog box of the App Store app.
If I restart my iPhone, I can paste in the password, but only until putting the iPhone to sleep.
There's a thread about this same issue on the 1Password forum, but like I said, I can't find anything about it here or elsewhere on Apple.com:
    http://support.agilewebsolutions.com/showthread.php?t=19538
    Can anyone else confirm this?
    Thanks,

I can't get C&P to work in iTunes or the App Store no matter what I do. My password is way too long and complicated to type in so let the updates pile up. When they reach about 50 or so, I'll go through the aggravation. Then when my contract with AT&T is up, I'll toss this phone. I have had enough of Apple's ****. It's always something. They have too much control over their buggy OS's both on the iPhone and the MacBook. People are under the impression that the OSX is way better than Windows. NOT A PRAYER IN ****.
They don't even have the choices of which OS you might have, updated on the drop down menu below.

I can't access password protection manager on my External Hard Drive to unlock it , I got updated antivirus and I always use safely remove to remove the hard drive. I see the UNLOCK APP Drive, and the Public Area, but when I run the "Password Protection Manager.exe" file at UNLOCK APP Drive, the bar will just be fulfilled by approximately 60% by showing "Loading...", then it stops for many seconds, and it starts to run the Installation file (PasswordProtectionManagerSetup_F.exe) which will delete all unlocked files if I accept it to install.

I have an imac 2009 the disk drive is damaged and I have lost the passwords I need to reset passwords I tried booting with a macosx disk from an external hard drive but did not read the drive how else can I reset password ?
I have a 2012 mac book pro can I use that to connect with firewire and load osx that way? and how woudl I do that?
    Thanks so much!

To what password are you referring? Do you mean your user account's admin password? Or do you mean the master password for File Vault or do you mean a Firmware Password?
    For an admin password:
    Forgot Your Account Password
    For Snow Leopard and earlier
Mac OS X 10.6- If you forget your administrator password
    For Lion/Mountain Lion
        Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
instructions in the dialog window that will appear.
Or see Reset a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Password and
OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
If you cannot do the above then try this:
      1. Boot to Safe Mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-S keys until a black screen with white type appears.
      2. At the prompt, type the following commands pressing return after each command line:
         /sbin/fsck -yf
If you do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message then repeat this command until
you do.  If after seven tries you still do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message,
then the system is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
         mount -uw /
         cd /private/var/db/netinfo
         mv local.nidb local.old
         rm ../.AppleSetupDone
         shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when the new owner starts up the computer it will send him/her to the startup wizard where he/she can start a new user without reinstalling.
This last method does not actually change a password. It simply removes the user accounts and lets you create an initial admin account as if the computer were new out of the box.
How to reset the OS X password without a startup CD:
Reboot into Single-user Mode. Enter the following and press RETURN after each command line
       1. Type fsck -fy
       2. Type mount -uw /
       3. Type passwd <username>
I have never tried this method myself.

  • In replacing a hard drive on a Mac book circa 2006, can you put too much hard drive space in and cause overheating? I've had 2 hard drives fail after installation in the past 3 weeks.

I recently had my Mac book circa 2006 updated to OS Lion and in the process was told I needed a new hard drive. I just replaced my original hard drive 9 months ago and was told at that time not to put too large a hard drive on my laptop or it could overheat. Now I have gone through 2 hard drives in the past 3 weeks since updating to Lion both of which were a terabyte in size. The authorized repair shop that put both failed hard drives in insists that the size of the hard drive does not cause problems in the Mac book but I am wondering why 2 failed in such a short time when the smaller hard drive lasted. It was working when I took it in for the updates but their diagnotic test showed that the first replacement HD was failing. I'm not sure what to think now.

Can I take that cloned hard drive and just plug it into my new Mac Mini and Viola I have two computers set up perfectly
    Yes.

    Hi,
In PSE 13, the password required is the password for your mail service provider.
In Edit -> Preferences -> Email, you can change that password.
Are you using a standard service provider (from the drop down list) or have to had to configure the link?

  • Can't open files from iCloud Drive on Mac

    Hi,
Can't open file from iCloud Drive on my MacBook Air (OS X 10.10.1).
I created new file (in Numbers for example). Then Numbers->File->Open->iCloud Drive->my_file.numbers and it says "Can't open file my_file.numbers".
I can preview the file by pressing Space, but openning from application and double-click on it doesn't work.
Files that were created earlear also not opened.
Does anybody know how to solve this problem? thanks.

    Using smtp.mail.me.com - also tried smtp.me.com
    SSL yes
    port 587
    SMTP Authentification Yes
Security SLS/TLS - also tried STARTTLS
User full **@me.com email address - also tried user name without @me.com
I have spoken to apple support this afternoon and we tried the variations shown above.
Support told me to wait for a day and try again!
After the iCloud authentication problem last night I changed all my passwords I wonder if there is an SMTP problem at me.com perhaps not reading the updated passwords?
I'll try and use the old passwords later.

  • How can I back up a hard drive with another hard drive?

I don't even know what community to post this question.
I have a standard usb 3.0, 4TB hard drive that I store EVERYTHING on (pictures, music, movies, documents). I spent this past summer organizing all of my files from multiple old hard drives and compiling them onto this one. It's very nice and organized now however, after all of this work I don't want to lose my stuff if the hd fails or something happens. So I bought another exact hd to back it up.
Before I do so, I was contemplating if there is any software or a better way than me doing this manually. I can easily copy the contents over and it will be backed up, but what happens if I make a change to my main hard drive i.e. add something or delete something. I would have to keep record of every change I make and do that exact same thing on the backup hard drive.
I'm guessing there's probably a simpler option that I'm just not aware of so that's why I'm coming here. Is there any way to select a hard drive and designate it as a backup for another hard drive so it will do all of that process automatically? I know my iMac has time machine, but I don't really know how that works and that seems to want to backup my desktop computer, which I'm not really interested in doing since I don't really store much on it other than my main programs. I also don't know where it backs things up to. Does it just double up on your current hard drive or have cloud storage or what?
    Thanks for any advice.

Time Machine will back up the internal drive by default and can be set to back up external ones formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). It can put the data onto a drive formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or a network storage location, but not Apple's iCloud servers.

You can download past purchases on this computer with just one Apple ID every 90 days. This computer can be used with a different Apple ID in 71 days. Whats the deal???

You can use multiple AppleIDs to purchase new music but you are limited as to how frequently you can change authorizations for re-downloading  past purchases.  It may well be a measure to deter piracy by stopping a group of people from going around to a friend's computer and downloading purchases on the other person's computer.  It is easy to avoid by making sure you have backup copies on drives at home so you never need to redownload anything.
