___Can't place a PSD

My co-worker can't place any .psd - says 'file not readable' - yesterday it was fine - that's all I know....
is there a plug-in she's missing/damaged?

The photohsop format plugins look good and match mine. (you have Esko Artwork, I'm jealous)
Can she place a layered .tif or .pdf, and are we linking or embedding? Try creating a new test user acount on her machine to see if that works.
Try placing a .psd in InDesign to see if that works.

  • Place CC PSD file in to InDesign

I have been trying out CC this afternoon and came to a problem when I try to place a PSD file saved from Photoshop CC in to InDesign. I have both InDesign CS6 and CC installed and the same issue occurs with both, so I think it is a problem with the PSD file. Compatability mode is ON.
When I try to place a JPG or PSD file from previous photoshop versions it works as normal.
The actual issue is that sometimes the object frame just appears as a purple box and other times it won't place in to the document at all... anyone else experiencing similar problems.
    Running on OS X 10.8.4

    Hi Willi,
I just did a few more tests today and it seems that the problem is actually with my image file - it seems to be corrupted. It was a an iStock jpeg file which I did some changes to in Photoshop and saved as PSD.
When I did the same things using PS CS6 and then tried to place in to InDesign I got the same problems...
I use Photoshop and InDesign almost every day and rarely get such problems - so when it happened yesterday after upgrading to CC I immediately jumped to the wrong conclusion!
Thanks for your willingness to help anyway

  • Cannot place photoshop PSD file

When I try to place a PSD file into Muse I get the following message:
    Cannot place file named 'logo.psd'.
Image was saved with Compatibility Mode turned off. Try re-saving in Photoshop with Compatibility Mode enabled before importing.
I'm using a fresh install of Photoshop CS5 with latest updates. When I save my file I get the compatibility mode confirmation box and the option is checked to enable compatibility mode. This happens in 32 and 64 bit versions. If I create a new image and save it I seem to be able to place it in Muse, the problem seems to only be with PSD files originally created on another computer.

    Bearfaced,
Not sure how to fix this exact issue, but as a workaround you could always:
    Open the .psd in Photoshop
Save as another file type (i.e .png)
Within Muse, File, place the .png
Should give the same result unless I'm missing something, hope this helps

When i Place a PSD in Indesign it comes in at 200+% while the image frame is considerably smaller. How do i place so that the image and image frame match?

    Peter,
    The screenshots tell you everything.
The second one tells you how the image frame is automatically set up after a one-click place. It's the blue stroked rectangle with the eight control points at each corner and mid-way along the line. This image frame is generated at a proportionally correct height and width for the image it contains.
Now, if you look at the third screenshot (click on it to see it at a larger size), you will see I've used the direct selection tool (white arrow) to click on the image within the image frame. This CLEARLY shows the image (within the image frame) is substantially larger than the frame generated to contain it. This is indicated by the yellow stroked rectangle with the eight control points at each corner and mid-way along the line.
Notice that the blue and yellow rectangles are vastly different sizes.
In InDesign CS5.5, when i clicked to place the image, the image would fit perfectly within its image frame. the blue and yellow rectangles would match.
I had no need to go click on the proportional fill and centre buttons like i need to do now in CC.
I have a keyboard shortcut to place. I can't do File > Place for the amount of images i need to place.
So to reiterate: How do i place an image so that the image and image frame match?

  • Unable to place Photoshop psd file in Illustrator CS3

    Hi,
    Can someone help please???
I am unable to place a Photoshop PSD file in Illustrator and be able to print the document correctly. The Illustrator file is saved as a ai file, both the document & PSD file are CMYK.
On screen the document looks fine but as soon as I have printed the document, some of file has not printed.
Do I need to have the Illustrator file as a eps file?
I used to use an old Photoshop version that had a Export Image option, which was great for something like this, but CS3 doesn't have this option.
Has anybody got any ideas what I am doing wrong?

This seems to be an Illy problem, not Photoshop. You might want to check
with the gurus there, but perhaps a few details, like what printer
you're using and a few screenshots might help.

  • Can't place layered psd

I can't place a layered file in illustrator. it keeps asking me the import options and I have to do a flattened file and then when I update the psd it won't update in Illustrator. I used to be able to do this, but now I can't do it and I don't know how to change that.

You both have this wrong you save your psd as a layered or a flatten psd file. Illustrator will not only not flatten it it does not actually place the file in Illustrator but instead only a proxy for preview. There is essentially a workable proxy.
The reason is if you want to edit the file since it is linked you do so in the program that recognizes that format, like in this case Photoshop. Once eited and resave the proxies preview is updated to reflect those changes.
When you embed an image it either converts the layers to ai objects or flattens the file and it does so per user's selection.
What the op is missing is the option to link which is not in the place options dialog but rather in the placedialog.
This will sound confusing so I will show screen shot

I placed a psd file with transparent background on another layer in my InDesign document. The layer below has a color (RGB). When the psd file is placed it changes the color on the layer below. I've tried other psd files thinking something is wrong with my file, but get the same result. I have tried for days to figure this out. Can anyone help me?

Wow, thank you! That was fast. I googled that question to death and even bought (another) book on CS5 and never saw that answer. Thank you so much. You made a very good ending to my day! I'd buy you a beer if I could!!

  • PSD Placement in Muse (Retain Vector Layers)

So in my eyes, Muse is for those like me. We can design, but can't code. Caters basically to designers without any HTML or CSS knowledge. Well, I think Muse needs to make a few improvements to really be a graphic designer's go-to tool for web design.
I always prefer starting a website concept in Illustrator or Photoshop. It handles and renders images, text and vectors perfectly. Everything looks pixel perfect. This is why I would prefer to build an entire website in Photoshop first, then export elements to then re-organize in Muse.
The problem with this process is that it is very time consuming. When I discovered that I could place a PSD file's layers into Muse, I was excited! BUT, that feature is a little behind the times... Every layer from that PSD is treated as a rasterized image. Logos, and even some text elements I like to use SVG (which is awesome that Muse can import SVG now). But this place PSD tool is useless to those smart object layers in the PSD file. This should be a feature to be added to reflect the new SVG support in Muse.
On a side note / problem, Muse' handling of SVG files is pretty poor. It's not anything like handling a vector in Illustrator or Photoshop. It has the loading style spinning wheel when moved and sized, and has this odd white bar below each image in Muse preview. I wish Muse would render things properly within Muse. It's highly frustrating as a pixel-obsessed graphic designer.
Adobe, please take note and add these to your to-do list!

Thanks for your input , please feel free to add your suggestions in our ideas section. We are working actively to include more features.
    Thanks,
    Sanjit

  • Why can't Illustrator CS6/CC place PSD files properly?

I have been using Adobe products for over 15 years and one of the main features I use is placing PSD files within Illustrator and then creating my text so that is remains vector. Being a recent Creative Cloud Team member and seeing that both CS6 and CC do not allow a user to place a PSD inside of Illustrator without drastically reducing the image baffles me!!!
For example create a 500x500 pixel 300dpi document in Photoshop and save as PSD. Then open Illustrator and create a document the EXACT SAME SIZE. Go to file place and try to place the PSD you just created. Notice that it will not place at the correct size???
I don't see how this big of an oversight can be overlooked. I have also noticed that when using the PANTONE Solid Color palette within Illustrators Color Books, with persistence turned on also still does not work. This has been a problem I have noticed for over 5 years!!! Even with workspaces saved this problem persist to this day.
I am on a BRAND NEW iMac out of the box so it is not a computer or user issue.
Can someone please help me with a solution to the above issues. As a Creative Director for a marketing and advertising agency I don't see how these two issues have not perplexed others as they both are part of my day to day work flow and are now hendering how I perform my daily job as a designer.
Any solutions or tips or tricks to eliminate the above mentioned issues are greatly appreciated.

you are correct by stating that the file will open, but if you go to document setup and then go to edit art boards you can see that the image size is actually much smaller than the original that you created. this is a major bug as i create a lot of my dynamic backgrounds in photoshop and then place them in illustrator to do my typography. i have been using photoshop and illustrator for over 15 years so i can not see them deleting this feature or overlooking the fact that it does not work, but then again who knows!!! they did in fact delete the AOM from Bridge which was the one main feature that i used and loved about the program. for products with this price range i can not see why they would delete such a vital feature to the program.
again just looking for a solution and i appreciate your quick response to this. hopefully we will start something that adobe will actually see and help us out with. it has slowed my production within the programs down to a sluggish crawl

  • Help! While editing a photo in CS3 the program shut down and will not reopen my psd file.

Help! While editing a photo in CS3 the program shut down and will not reopen my psd file. The error message reads "cannot complete your request because of a program error" -- it is a very large file (I have been saving it all along) and I had just "flattened layers" and went to open up a new, blank photo file when it shut down. Is there anyway to get this file to open? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! (p.s. after reading a couple of similar threads, I have a feeling it's hopeless. But I'd also like to know WHY this might have happened!) Thanks in advance!

Thank you. I appreciate you taking the time to respond and for sharing the article--I did panic. Here are the details of my system:
    Model: HP p7-1247c
Processor: AMD A8-3820 APU with Radeon HD Graphics
Installed Memory: 8 GB (7.48 usable)
    System Type: 64-bit
    Windows 7 Home Premium
I am using Photoshop CS3. It seems that I can work on photos and save them. But I am unable to open them back up. I have tried saving the files as psd and tiff with the same result. The error message is:  "cannot complete your request because of a program error"
The interesting thing is that I can open up InDesign and "place" the psd file within InDesign (then export and save as a jpeg). So I don't think the files are necessarily corrupted. I uninstalled Photoshop and reinstalled it last night, but there's no change.
If you have any ideas, I'd appreciate it. Or, should I repost my question with this more complete info? Thank you!

  • Can you place linked files into Photoshop CS4?

If you place a .psd or .tif file into an InDesign file, you are alerted if any changes are made to that file (as I'm sure most of you know). Is there any way to do this within Photoshop? I have several dozen carpet sample .tif files that are to be used in several hundred "montage" type "carpet sample groups" layered .psd files that will then be saved as images for the web (does that make sense?). Is there any way to do this so that if there's a change in the original .tif file it will automatically change any .psd file in which it's being used? I know the easiest way to do this is in InDesign, but I have two problems: 1) the conversion from InDesign to a web image is laborious, and 2) the person doing the work does not know InDesign at all. I can show him how to use it, but that's a small part of the battle.
Any suggestions? I'm using CS4 for Windows.
    Thanks,
    Lloyd

Thanks for your comments. The problem arises because we have to create that intermediate Photoshop step.
We have, say, a dozen individual carpet swatches that are used to create hundreds of combinations (which are all separate layered .psd files). If one swatch changes (color, for example), then we have to open every .psd file in which that swatch appears and change it (or place the changed one). I'd love to be able to change the original and have it update every layered file in which it appears, just like InDesign does with placed/linked files.
    Maybe there's a plug-in (wishful thinking)?
Also, I'd really like to have it changed in the web development end of things, but we're working with a company that is (obviously) using templates and we can only give them single images, hence the need to create the intermediate Photoshop files.

  • Need Help Please - PSD InDesign (for print)?

    Hello Everyone,
I'm a graphic designer for a company that has decided to run some print ads in a magazine. At the time, I only had Photoshop to create their advertisement with. Now they have purchased CS4, which will make my life easier in the future, however, for now I have the problem of creating my advertisement made with Photoshop and creating a print ready PDF.
    Here is my problem:
    - I created a PSD at 8.5" x 11" at 300ppi
    - I did not take in to account for the 0.125" bleeds and 1/8" trim
    - It needs to be SWOP compliant (I figured out I can export a PDF that adheres to SWOP)
    - Fonts should be Type 1 Postscript, no TTF (I'm using Helvetica and Arial, when I export the PDF, it says the embedded fonts are TTF)
    - I'm totally lost with regards for designing work for print!
Here the specs they gave me, AFTER I created the design in Photoshop
    ====
Full page, full bleed 8.0" 10-3/4" (**I created my PSD as a 8.5" x 11" - without regard to bleeds**)
Include 1/8 bleed over all to ensure full page bleed
and keep live copy 1/4 from trim and crop marks.
    CMYK, 4-color process printing only.
Do not add bleed to partial page ads.
All requirements are based on Specifications for Web Offset
Publications (SWOP). Any deviation from these specifications may
    result in less-desirable printed results.
We support PDF files generated by Adobe Acrobat using
the X-1A Job Option Settings for Distiller. In order for
prepress to generate printable PDF s, it is important that
the native file is prepared accordingly.
Preparing native files for printable PDF s:
All images/scans must be in CMYK mode,
    300 dpi resolution
Use Postscript (Type 1) fonts only. No True
Type, Windows/PC or custom fonts accepted
    Embed all fonts
Do not nest EPS files in other EPS files
Four-color solids should not exceed SWOP
    density of 280%
Provide two digital color proofs at 100% size, created
from the supplied digital file, on a contract-quality,
digital halftone proofing system in accordance with
    SWOP web coated standards (AGFAPressmatch,
Kodak Approval, DuPont Waterproof, etc.). Laser or
inkjet proofs are not considered accurate in color and
are supplied for content confirmation only.
If supplied, the publisher is not responsible for color variances
between the digital file and final color reproduction.
NOTE: If proofs are not supplied, make-goods due to
reproduction quality will not be honored.
    ====
I've never done print work before, as I'm mainly a graphic designer for the web.
Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated! Unfortunately for me, they bought the advertisement space with the magazine for the running of the next issue before speaking with me. So I'm under extreme pressure to get this underway. I'll be most grateful for any help or guidance, Thanks guys!

You can Place a PSD in Indesign, but unless the bleed is a single color,
it's going to be easier to add bleed in Photoshop. Bleed is whatever
gets cut off when they trim the paper. Trim is close, but not exact, so
whatever picture or color goes to the edge of the paper must extend
beyond the edge to avoid trim including some white when the trim is not
quite perfect. If it's a picture that goes to the edge, you need to
figure out a way to extend the picture beyond the edge. If it's white
that goes to the edge, then you don't need bleed. If it's a non-tone
color field (a single color) then you could Place the PSD in Indesign
and add bleed color behind it and extending beyond the edge of the page.
The magazine should not concern themselves with TT or T1 fonts, either
one should work. That said, Helvetica and Arial are very close. If your
Helvetica is Type 1, just use Helvetica for the whole thing. If you
embed it in the PDF, it should show there as a Type 1 subset.

  • Add layers from other psd file via action/batch (Or possibly script)

    Hi
Brand new to this forum. Quick intro: Eivind from Norway, 32, Photographer, Nikon D300, CS5
I have tried to make a action where i open 2 files, duplicate the layers from file2 to file1 and it works fine.
But running the action as a batch i get in trouble, the action saves the from and to filenames when i duplicate the layers.
Then i found the place function (File - Place..) but i ran in to trouble here also. When i place a psd file containing the layers it becomes smart objects and i can't edit the text layers directly.
Background: I have a script that copys info from the filename to specific labeled text layers in photoshop. (Name_Age_Title.jpg) so i can batch process lots of files and add info boxes from the filename (Fantastic) Only problem is the i want to make lots of different layouts, logos, fonts. And no i have to adjust the action for every change. Would have been perfect to just have a action/batch/script opening the file, adding the layers from a template1.psd file, running the script adding text to the text layers and saving.
    Any ideas?
    Eivind

    No comments on this one?
Maybe i have to do the scriping way, any ideas?

  • Problem with spot channels when importing PSD into AI CS3

tried the Windows forum, and adobe tech support in The Netherlands. Hopefully someone here can help.
    b Problem description:
I make spot colour separations of full colour artwork by using the index separation method in Photoshop. This creates several spot color channels in my PSD file.
Normally I just place this PSD file in Illustrator CS2, and when I embed the file Illustrator makes objects of the spot channels. I can change the colors of these objects and delete them etc.
Now with Illustrator CS3 when I import and embed a PSD file it just creates one object called "Spot Color Image". I can no longer adjust or delete separate spot channels.
Maybe there is another way to achieving this but I cannot find it myself. Without this method Illustrator CS3 has become useless for me.

Hi again, I did the same, and I see what you mean. The original image is an image, the channels are separate objects for me, but the original image isn't different channels.
I found this in the Help file:
Spot colors (up to 31 spot channels per file) import as a single N‑Channel raster image, which is placed over the process color image. The spot colors are added to the swatches panel as custom colors with the same name as in Photoshop. Imported spot colors separate correctly.
Will think some more. Not sure what to suggest. Someone must have an answer to help you.
