Can't play AAC 5.1 sound
I can't get my quicktime to play sound above stereo on qt .mov files. Whenever I select the sound out to 5.1 there's no movement on the graphical equilizer. I'm using Windows Vista and have a 7.1 creative sound card. How do I play QT mov in 5.1?

Fair enough - just want to try and clarify what happens with 6-channel AAC on AppleTV as I've never even tried a file of that type on it.
There is only one sound track, which is why I had to look twice, I thought at first it might have been a stereo AAC track and a 5.1 track, but no it isn't.
I believe since Take 2.0 that the movies with AC-3 5.1 surround do have 2 tracks, and this is now how H B encodes things - the advantage being that the 2 channel is used say to a TV that can't decode 5.1, and 5.1 is output via optical and probably HDMI to a receiver.
AFAIK, haven't actually changed the tv, I understood it could always pass through AC-3, it's just that now it is included in the movie files which they weren't before.
I tried a file that outputs AC-3 5.1 on the new AppleTV with 2.0 installed and it works, but playing it on the 1.1 version AppleTv it didn't passthrough the sound when I swapped the 2 over.
DTS files encoded as wavs could be played via optical (Diatonis eg) but i'm not aware of video files with DTS soundtracks - passthrough should be possible but may not be supported - bet we'll find out in time.

Qucktime and iTunes Can't Play 5.1 Surround Sound
So I undarstand qicktime is used to adjust iTunes audio and in the control panel of the qicktime there is an option for 5.1 sound. However when I click this option (5.1 sound) I still get stereo sound out of my two front speakers while other speakers remain quiet.
Does anyone know the way to fix this?
Oh and my WMP plays my music in full 5.1 surround sound so it's qicktime that's not working properly.well a lot of stuff on HBO is 5.1 like true blood was, so if you have hbo on demand look for some true blood episodes, they should show (when you click on info) the DD logo. I can't think of much more other than the movie stations off the top of my head. I'll check tomorrow for some, and then you can try it, and if it doesn't work you can look at some of your settings on your revceiver. Randy was right - fios doesn't alter the sound that comes from the stations, so if it is delivered in 5.1 then you should get it.

Safari can't play application/x-mplayer2 sounds
I use Safari to visit websites that run Nagios, a network management system. When something
is wrong, Nagios displays web pages that have an imbedded object that's of MIME type
"application/x-mplayer2". Safari displays a pop-up that says

I can navigate directly to file .wav file and Safari (QuickTime?) plays the sound. I think
I need to get "application/x-mplayer2" added to the list of MIME types that the QuickTime
plug-in handles. Is there a way to do that?
I know that QuickTime has a System Preferences pane, with an "Advanced" tab with a
"MIME Settings" button. That doesn't help - it controls MIME types that QuickTime supports,
not the MIME types that the QuickTime plug-in supports.

In Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them).
Now repair permissions and restart.
The world should now be your oyster!
You should also have the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not. -
Ipod can't play the song normally /sound problem.

Can't play / record sound on Yosemite with external Firewire audio interface
I've got a Focusrite Saffire PRO 24 Firewire audio device. It worked perfectly until I upgraded to Yosemite. Even upgrading the driver to the last version (which suports Yosemite) I can't play sound in any way. Garageband crashes when I try to play my projects. Youtube videos on a browser stay paused on 00:00...
Saffire pro 24 is detected. I can select it on System preferences or garageband settings. On Saffire Mix Control 3.5 I can see how audio inputs are ok, the input signal is received and the output is ok. According to Saffire Mix Control everything's fine, but I can't play audio nor record sound.
If I switch to internal audio device everything works perfectly.
I did some research and every time I try to play sound these errors are shown on the Console.

It looks like there's some problem with Airplay? I didn't even know what Airplay was until now but after looking for some information I don't understand what has Airplay to do with playing sound over firewire.
I tried to disable Airplay on System Preferences > Display. I removed com.apple.airplay.plist from Library/Preferences but the results are the same
Please a need help with this. It's getting really frustrating. I'm trying to get help from Focusrite support as well.In case another poor man like me run into this issue, here's how I solved it:
First of all, I removed Saffire Mix Control entirely following this guide:

In addition to that I did this:
1. Mac HD > Library > Preferences > Audio and in there please delete the two preference files
2. Finder > Go > Hold down the "Alt" key and click on the library folder. In there please trash the file "com.apple.audiomidisetup.plist" (in case it exists)
Then I emptied the trash, restarted system and reinstalled Saffire Mix Control 3.5
Problem solved. -
OSS doesn't play more than 1 sound at the same time [SOLVED]
Hello,
I use OSS to replace ALSA, it used to work properly here. Today I noticed that I can't play more than one sound at the same time, something which I used to be able to do.
Also, ossxmix doesn't operate properly (I can't control the volume of a specific program).
Looks like a permissions issue, because /dev/dsp and /dev/oss are created as root and other users get Permission Denied.
Any ideas how to fix it? My sound card is an AC'97 onboard.

EDIT: Solved by pacman -R oss, rm -rf /usr/lib/oss then pacman -S oss. Seems to have worked.

Have you tried resetting the iPod yet to see if that makes a difference? To do this, press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
If that doesn't work, a restore of the iPod via iTunes may be in order.

I have a MacBook pro which I am looking to use for only iTunes or Spotify for the time being but the iMac built in speakers are better.
I am internet sharing from an ethernet on my iMac and the Macbook pro is connected to the shared network.
Can I play music from Spotify on my macbook pro but out of my iMac speakers?

How can I play music on my macbook pro (OSX Lion) through a Pioneer receiver? I've connected them with a mini display port to HDMI cable with audio support bought at the Apple Store, but there's no sound coming through. There are 4 HDMI-in ports on the receiver - BD, DVD, DVR/BDR and audio. In my system preferences for sound, the receiver doesn't show up as an output option. Can anyone please advise. Can't play MIDI the same time as any other sound.
Hello there.
I am a bass player and therefore I use GTick from [extra] as a metronome and TuxGuitar from [community] as GuitarPro tablature reader. I have a problem with (at least) this two programs: when I try to start the metronome or to play a tablature, I get error messages if any sound is playing, no matter if it is Amarok playing music, or TuxGuitar playing a tablature.
For non-musicians, a GuitarPro tablature is a transcription of a song which can be played through MIDI at the same time as you can see the partiture, or the notes played on an image of a guitar neck or a keyboard.
This happens every time I want to play some MIDI from this two apps: if I have a tablature open with TuxGuitar I can't play another tablature on another instance of TuxGuitar, or even start GTick to play alone with the metronome. I have to close TuxGuitar and start GTick, or open the other tablature in the same instance of TuxGuitar, which is annoying when, for example, trying to compare two tablatures of the same song.
This makes me think that my system can't play any MIDI when some other sound is playing, but I don't know any other MIDI apps to try. Any ideas on how to setup multiple MIDI playing? I've read on the Wiki [1] that it was necessary to enable dmix some time ago to allow multiple programs play sound at once, but this is not necessary since ALSA 1.0.9rc2, and I have alsa-lib 1.0.17a-1.

I am trying to import standard midi file that I created in Band in a Box into Logic Pro 9. I can not get all the track to play with internal instrument sounds... only the piano track. how can I get the others to play... drums, bass etc???? Help
Don't drag the midi into an open Logic project. The tracks won't set up correctly.
'Open' the midi file with Logic as if it were a Logic project. Then all the tracks will be set up so you can start editing them and applying better saved sounds and instruments, but you'll be at a starting place where you can hear what's going on. -
I can't play any purchased movies. Sounds like it is the 6.0 update. So what is the fix? Am I just stuck not being able to use my Apple TV until...?
Sorry I can't help but I have potentially a similar problem.
We have an Apple TV 3 and after the most recent software update (potentially coincidental timing), our purchased movies & TV shows will no longer play for our US account. We can play previews but that's it. We also tried renting a new movie but that didn't work either. No error messsage, just select play, it thinks about it, then returns you to the same screen again.
Any help greatly appreciated.

what video are you trying to stream via airplay?
currently only video from youtube app or ipod app is supported.

Look at item properties for the .mov and .dv files. What exactly does it say they are? What drive are they playing back from? Make sure the contents of the viewer are set to fit to window in the View popup at the top of the viewer.
