Can't play certain avi files on WMP when Premiere or Encore running

I just replaced my hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP Pro with the latest service packs and updates. I also reinstalled my programs. Now when I have a project open in Premiere Pro 1.5 or Encore 1.5, I cannot view an AVI v1.0 video avi file on Windows Media Player or any other media player. The audio sounds fine but the video is washed out with weird shimmering colors. I can view an OpenDML (AVI v2.0) video avi file with no problems. When neither Adobe program is running I can view any avi file on any media player. I would appreciate any assistance.

Some suggestions and answer at least the 16 questions at the end of the Wiki article.

Hmm . . . comes with a Utility MPEG2 Component ML app with no explanation of what it's for?
The utility app is an "assistant PKG installer." It allows Lion and Mountain Lion users to install the older QT MPEG-2 Playback Component installer PKG file which is not allowed to run on its own under Lion or Mountain Lion since these operating systems already have a QT X only MPEG-2 component embedded in the QT embedded structure. Without this utility you would have to either copy the component from an older system to your Lion or Mountain Lion system, use Pacifist for installation, or manually open the PKG contents and transfer the component to the appropriate component folder.
As to your "discussion" regarding the playback of AVI file types, there are really only two strategies here:
    1) You can add component support so that QT can play the files natively or
    2) You can convert the file contents to compression formats that are natively compatible with the unmodified QT component configuration.
Each user should decide for his or her own self which approach best suits their needs for a particular source file. In most cases, conforming the system's codec component configuration to play the source file directly results in higher video quality since no transcoding takes place but this strategy will not work if a codec which is required is not available for the user's operating system. On the other hand, converter utilities tend to support more built-in codecs and are easier to use since the user does not have to concern him or herself with the nature of the particular source compression formats but at the risk of some potential loss in visual quality. As to what converter to use, once again this is a matter of personal choice. In the case of commercial converters like iSkysoft, the codecs are built in while MPEG Streamclip accesses the host operating system's QT codec component configuration. I personally prefer the free HandBrake app for AVI, MKV, TS, MTS, and M2TS conversions since it has an exceptionally full-featured X.264 GUI with some user options that 97% of users are likely to never use.

  • Troubles playing certain AVI files on Intel Mac

I have an Archos 604 WiFi and previously an Archos AV500. On my old PPC machines, the AVI files created by the Archos played just fine in Quicktime. However, I recently upgraded to all Intel-based Macs and I can no longer play the files. Here's the info for one of the files I can't play:
    Type: AVI
    Duration: 47'00"
    Video: [MPG4], Resolution: 640x480
    Bitrate: 1516kb/s, 29FPS
    Audio: [ADPCM], 257kb/s, 32000Hz, Stereo
I have the latest Divx 6 and Flip4Mac codecs installed. The only thing I don't have is 3ivx which doesn't have an Intel version available currently.
When I attempted to play one of these files, the video seems OK, but the audio is nothing but a little static for the first few seconds and then nothing is audible.
I also have the latest MPlayer 2 and VLC and I'm not getting any better results with those players.
Any idea what codec for Quicktime I can try? I haven't tried Perian yet, but it's on my To-Do list for tonight. If there's nothing I can use until 3ivx 5.0 is released, is there an easy Windows application I can run in Parallels to reencode the audio to MP3 or AAC or something else that'll work with Qt/Divx/Flip4Mac?
    Thanks

After installing Perian, VLC all of the sudden started playing one of the files corrected while the remainder still had no sound. MPlayer2 worked better but still didn't play everything. Not sure why those 2 apps would work better after installing a QT plugin, though???

  • QT won't play certain .avi files but VLC will - Both files using same codec

    Hi,
I have numerous video files and all but two will play on quicktime. However, they will play on VLC. The files are .avi just like the others and the codecs on the two streams are xvid and mpga. The other .avi files have the same codecs. I have all the norm codecs perian, div x, x vid etc.
The files do open in quicktime but only last 5 seconds as opposed to the full 42 or so minutes. The audio and video for the 5 seconds is fine. On VLC, they play for the entire 42 or so minutes.
any idea why they will play on VLC but not fully on quicktime? is there another codec I should get? Thanks for your help

Could be timecode breaks (would normally suspect the audio track). The QT Player is particularly strict with them. If you have QT Pro, you might try extracting both tracks to separate players and see which is causing the problem. If just the audio, you could then fix the timecodes (MPEG Streamclip?) or convert to another compatible format and and re-merge the original video with the "fixed" audio track.

  • Can't play some .AVI files

Hello everyone. I'm sure this problem has been posted before. I did a quick search and wasn't able to find what I needed. I'm not able to play some .AVI movies. I can't exactly figure out why I can watch some but not others. It happens with some internet .AVIs and personal .AVI videos. But as soon as I run Windows on bootcamp then I'm able to play all of those videos
I do have .AVI checked in Quicktime and I have also downloaded VLC and Perian. Anyone have the same problem as me?

I finally found the solution. The EnSharpen codec resolved the problem. All of those videos I couldn't watch with Perian, VLC, and Flip4Mac I can now watch. Here's the link to their website: http://www.techsmith.com/codecs/ensharpen/default.asp

  • How can the Windows Media Player 12 be made to play WVC210 .avi files?

I just built a new computer and it won't play the motion captured videos of the WVC210. It has Windows 7 Home Premium as the operating system. My machines running XP play the WVC210 files GREAT. Is there a codec I can add to the WMP12 so that it will play the .avi files. I have 3 cameras around the property, 2 WVC210 and 1 WVC200. 1 camera has the audio turned off so switching to MP4 (no audio) made that work OK. But the camera in the office I need to have audio and would rather stick to WMP over something like VLC. VLC plays the files fine but I much prefer WMP. I'm hopeing to find out how to have Windows Media Player 12 play the .AVI files from the WVC210 cameras. Any Help??

There appears to be issues with codecs on WMP 12 and Windows 7
AND\OR your WMP is missing the necessary codecs.

  • No sound with certain .avi files

    Hi there,
I have installed the latest divX codec, but for some reason certain .avi files play but have no sound.
Movie Inspector showed this: "Format: DivX 6.0, 672x288, unknown 'ms', Stereo, 48000 kHz"
VLC can play the file, but I'd like to be able to watch it in Frontrow.
    thanks in advance

It is most likley a problem in the new Quick Time (QT). My Updater downloaded the new QT 7.4.5 two Saturdays ago. I have been making movies in iMovie then posting them to YouTube. In the beginning I uploaded the movies as MOVs but soon discovered AVI files (larger file and added time to upload) had more clarity when viewed on YouTube. Once the new QT 7.4.5 downloaded all my AVIs had picture, but no sound! I downloaded the Perian component as posted in QT discussions. The sound returned to the AVI files. However, when I Exported an AVI movie from iMovie the picture quality was worse than MOV. There is something wrong with the new QT 7.4.5 when working with AVI, my AVI movies look terrible. These AVI files were all downloaded from my Ultra Flip Video camera with Flip’s codec 3vix. Flip is aware of this problem and acknowledged it last week, I sure hope Apple is also aware.

Why does Quicktime tell me it can't play certain videos created with my Phantom 2 v3 drone ? I fly the drone and switch back and forth from video to still pics and while I may have filmed four videos , sometimes Quicktime tells me that one of them can't be played . Checking the info shows that each of the unplayed videos was saved in the same mp4 format as the playable ones yet some of my most important videos won't play . It's getting very frustrating .

first; I use Perian, that helps even though it is no longer supported, (must have for avi files)
the apple-cores at apple have gotten very sloppy -- quicktime is a bit finicky and flakey.
example,   occasionally (when copy file from quad's card to hard drive)  the avi will show up as a 'mov' file and qt plays it no problem and no conversion.
but that is very occasionally,  most of the time qt won't convert the file,   -- iMovie won't open an avi without Perian installed  ,  I don't know how that effects qt.
qt 7"pro" is no good either, (qt 10 does everything it does and for NOT the extra $35)
I have gone to VLC  and MPlayerX  for direct playback for drones and cameras.

  • Message by mpv and ffplay when playing certain flac files

When playing certain flac files with mpv or ffplay, I experience colored messages which might be warnings or errors in the terminal. I don't hear that something is wrong with the audio and therefore I ignored it for a long time. But I'm a bit curious why this message occures because the files are converted from CDs with the flac tool itself. The output I am talking about looks like this (in orange) when playing with mpv:
[ffmpeg] NULL: sample/frame number mismatch in adjacent frames
And it looks like this when playing with ffplay (in cyan and orange):
[flac @ 0x7f73e0001760] sample/frame number mismatch in adjacent frames
When decoding with the flac utility, I don't see any messages. Does anybody know, where this behavior comes from? Might it be a good idea to rip and reencode the audio again or can I safely ignore these messages?

    Thanks for your answer!
karol wrote:Are you using mpv and ffmpeg from the repos?
Yes, they are the vanilla packages from the repos.
karol wrote:Have you tried playing these files on another, non-Arch, system?
Well, I just updated an old Gentoo (which took some time) and experience the same messages with these files. Interestingly, when I fastforward, the message does not appear (on both systems).
karol wrote:Google shows these messages are pretty common, but since nothing seems to be broken, I don't think you need to worry.
Yes, I also tried to search these messages on Google. But I did not understand most of it. It's just that I could not understand why a file that was encoded by flac itself produce errors/warnings or anything like that when playing and just make sure that nothing is broken.

  • HT3775 i try to play an AVI file and it says the codes isnt supported?

I'm trying to play an avi file. Quicktime won't play it because the required codec isnt available but when I click on 'tell me more' button it does list avi as a file format that is should play. First the file would play in VLC but then I installed some updates and now it doesnt play it anymore? What's going on?

AVI isn't a audio format, but merely a container or wrapper around the codec. So, just because it is an AVI doesn't mean it is the same as every other AVI.
VLC can usually play just about everything. Were the updates to VLC or to the OS?

  • How to play Windows AVI file using Teststand

    Hi,
I'm trying to play a Windows AVI (*.avi) file using the Windows Media Player, launched by
    a Teststand CallExecutable type step.
When the step executes, the Windows Media Player app. starts o.k., but the file to be played
causes an error which states the file type is not recognised.
Yet if the AVI file is selected in Windows Explorer, it runs fine, i.e. the file type is associated with
    Windows Media Player.
If the 1st error is ignored, a 2nd is displayed. This states the file cannot be played, and suggests that
the path may be incorrect or the server is unavailable.
When configuring the Teststand CallExecutable step, the Argument Expression field contains the full
absolute address of the AVI (*.avi) file to load and play.
I have also tried using an expression and also placing the AVI file in the same directory as the
Windows Media Player .exe, but the file will still not play.
If I use the Run utility from the Windows Start menu, I can enter the same details on a single command
line, and the AVI (*.avi) loads and plays just fine.
What should I do to get Windows Media Player to run the AVI (*.avi) file using the Teststand CallExecutable step ?
    thanks,
    Gary.

  • How can I add an AVI file to iMovie?

I have iMovie '11. It won't let me add a .AVI file. If I can't add a .AVI file what is the best FREE software to convert it and what should I convert it to? Thanks!

I agree with the Streamclip suggestion for two reasons.
The first is that it is free and works well.
The second is that Streamclip is so essential that if one doesn't have it on one's computer, one is missing a very fascinating piece of software. Free, converts faster than anything Apple uses, and gives you a little window to see the conversion to make sure everything is going ok.

  • I can't play certain videos from the internet on my macbook

I can't play certain videos from the internet on my macbook.
When using Sarfari or Google Chome, I am unable to play some videos on the internet. News clips, posted videos on blogs, and tv episodes from their own network websites. Youtube videos are fine. I doesn't make sense.
I tried downloading an update for quicktime, but the computer claims that quicktime is up to date. Yet, the videos and tv episodes don't play.
I have checked for the most recent software updates, and everything is up to date. Nothing is wrong with the hardware either.
Any suggestions would be awesome! Thank you!

In addition to Flash, you might need some other plugins.  Microsoft videos are mostly in Silverlight, and you'll want Flip4Mac to play WMVs.  Perian contains codecs for pretty much every video online.
