Can't play/edit movies

Hi. I just bought a sony handycame DCR-SX41 and can't figure out how to play/edit the movies on iMovie -- it won't even recognize the files to open them. I have a Mac OS 10.4.11 and an iMovie version 3.0.3. If I need to download a more recent iMovie, please let me know which one -- and what would be the least expensive software to download.
Thanks,
Brandon

If you purchased the Apple MPEG-2 playback component and then used MPEG Streamclip to convert the MPEG-2 files to DV files, you wouldn't even have to upgrade to iMovie 6 if you didn't want to. As QTKirk pointed out, once converted to DV format you can use the files with ANY version of iMovie, even iMovie 2 if you wanted.
Another option that might work is ffmpegX which can be found here... http://www.ffmpegx.com/ which claims to be able to handle converting MPEG-2 files to other formats without the Apple component. I personally do not have any experience with it. Again, if you convert to a DV format you can use the files with your current iMovie install. If you upgrade to a later version of iMovie then you could convert to MPEG-4 files if you wanted.
You might also look at Handbrake. It outputs MPEG-4 files, so you wouldn't be able to use them with iMovie v4 or earlier, but I think it might convert MPEG-2 files directly. You would have to try it and see. It has been a long time since I used it and I don't recall trying it on actual MPEG-2 files before. I used it for another purpose at the time.

I just bought an HD movie on iTunes.  Yesterday, I watched all but twenty minutes of it on my Dell laptop.  Today, I tried to open it on the same laptop, and it told me my computer can't play HD movies, that I have to view it in SD.  The error message said that my computer didn't have the capabilities, but I have several other HD movies that I have always and can still watch without issue.  Just this one doesn't work.  Why, and do you know how to fix this?

Apparently the display is required to be HDCP compatible to view HD movies in iTunes. My display isn't so this is my problem. I contacted Apple support and they have agreed to credit me for the HD movie and I have now downloaded the SD version.

Comes up with "This movie can be played only on displays that support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection)."
The cheek of the matter is everytime I tried to get Apple support it comes up with a request for me to pay $54 for their support package, to fix a problem I didn't have until I complied to one of their update requests.
End of Rant!!! - Anyone know how to fix please?

Well, I wonder about all the responses...:)
Anyhow, I wound up "fixing" the problem by using the System Restore disks for the Mini. It's now running Tiger 10.4.11 (with all updates) and I copied my iTunes library over. It all works now. <shrug> I have no idea what the problem was, and I'm a bit leery of upgrading it to Leopard, so I think I'll just leave well enough alone.

How can i play a movie in keynote from more than 600 seconds between other slides in a automatic loop

The maximum duration available for an automatic presentation in Keynote is 600 seconds.
The alternatives are to export a QuickTime video, use other presentation applications, a media server player or digital signage application.

  • Can't play rented movies.  They appear to download OK and the timer accurately reports days remaining to watch.  But whenever I try to play the movie I get this message, "An error occurred loading this content.  Try again later."

Can't play rented movies.  They appear to download OK and the timer accurately reports days remaining to watch.  But whenever I try to play the movie I get this message, "An error occurred loading this content.  Try again later.". Have been using the Apple TV for 2 weeks and everything else seems to work OK.  The Apple TV reports its SW is up to date.  I've tried this with two movies rented frim iTunes directly from the Apple TV.

If after you download the movie, you navigate away and do something else with your Apple TV the content you have downloaded will be overwritten and you'll need to download it again. It's a pain in the neck for many who have slow downloads but it's something that comes with using volatile memory rather than a hard drive for storage.
Perhaps you're not doing this, but I thought it worth mentioning.

  • TS3772 How can I play my movie? It's asking me to download quicktime and I already did... twice

Can you check something for me please? I'd like to try doing a "Run as administrator" on your iTunes.
    Quit iTunes first.
In Computer, open Local Disk C: or whichever drive you have your program files installed on.
If you have a 32-bit Windows, open the "Program files" folder.
If you have a 64-bit Windows, open the "Program Files (x86)" folder.
    Open the "iTunes" folder.
Right-click on the iTunes.exe file and select "run as administrator".
Can you play the movie without the QuickTime message now?

  • Can't play a movie on DVD with QuickTime

I can't play a movie on a DVD with QuickTime. With the player open, when I go to File and then Open, I get the two Video and Audio folders on the DVD itself! The Apple Quicktime guide says of how to play video:
"To open a movie on your hard disk, a CD, or a DVD, do one of the following:
    1) In the Finder (or Windows Explorer), double-click the file or drag it to the QuickTime Player application icon.
2)Choose File > Open and select the file."
Firstly, if I double click on the DVD drive in Windows Explorer, it'll open the DVD with my default player (not Quicktime). Secondly what is the 'QuickTime Player application icon?
    Thanks, Trickyf

Thanks QuickTimeKirk. I didn't know that about QuickTime not being able to play DVD movies. However am still interesed re the icon. Where is the icon supposed to be which I drag files to? On the desktop? There isn't an icon in the player.
    Thanks

  • I can't play iTunes Movies in 5.1 surround on my surround sound system

I like to download iTunes movies to my MacMini from iTunes store. Recently I gave up doing so because I can't play iTunes movies in 5.1 surround on my surround system. My MacMini is connected to my Marantz 6007 SR via HDMI cable. However I can get DTS or 5.1 surround sound from my system with other players such as VLC player.
How can I fix this problem as I really want to buy or rent movies from iTunes store?

    Hi komansava,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your Mac Mini is able to output 5.1 audio to your surround sound receiver, but iTunes purchases do not play in surround sound.
When playing iTunes purchases, first see if iTunes is set to output the movie you're playing in surround sound:
Set up iTunes to play content in surround sound
Movies you purchased or rented from the iTunes Store may have stereo audio and digital surround sound tracks. ...
In iTunes, click the Speech Bubble icon to view your audio choices, such as English (Surround). If the surround sound choice is dimmed or the icon doesn't appear, make sure you are using the appropriate hardware and that the content is encoded with digital surround sound.
You can find this information here:
Set up iTunes and your DVD Player for digital surround sound - Apple Support
    Best Regards,

How can I play .avi movies on my mac?
    Quicktime pro doesn't do it.
If there's some kind of patch or something, please give me the url/link!
    Thanks!

How can I play .avi movies on my mac? With difficulty.
Quicktime pro doesn't do it.Generally speaking, no -- not without third-party components.
If there's some kind of patch or something, please give me the url/link!Try Perian (free). It contains a collection of popular PC codecs which may or may not support the specific files you want. If not, you have to determine what particular codec is required, find out if it is available, and then download/install it. (Not all AVI audio/video file formats have been ported for Mac use.) Even then, if it is a proprietary codec and you want to be able to convert to/from that format, you may have to purchase/register the component.

  • Can i play a movie on apple tv if my computer does not support HDCP?

The iTunes store sais that I can´t play a movie on my PC because it does not support HDCP. Do I am able to watch it on Apple TV anyway?

What is the risk? It will work (it should) or it won't.

  • I can not play a movie downloaded from itunes.  it says not authorized

I have an iBookG4. I purchased a movie from iTunes but my computer says it is not authorized to play it.  I went under iStore an made sure authorization was on.  I still can not play the movie.   I can however play the movie on my iPad.

Did you open with the Videos App?

  • Can I play 3D movies on a 3D TV using Quicktime 7 and the FBX QuickTime Viewer Plug-in from Autodesk?

Can I play 3D movies on a 3D TV using Quicktime 7 and the FBX QuickTime Viewer Plug-in from Autodesk?  I would like to play 3D movies which are in Side by Side or Top/Bottom format where the image for each eye is 1080 x 720p.  I would like to output to a 3D TV connecting it to the Mac graphics card DVI output (with a HDMI 1.3 converter) using the 2nd Display option of Quicktime.
These would be my 3D movies created with Final Cut and Stereo3D Toolbox from Dashwood.

What type of files are these? It does seem odd that iTunes and QuickTime will still play the files, but Front Row refuses to.
Did you have any codecs or plugins for QuickTime installed? It may be possible that one of the updates is either incompatible with, or removed, one of these.
I recommend downloading Perian - a very versatile codec that allows the playback of many media files - and see if this cures the issue.
