  • I updated my computer and now I can't play mov files from anywhere

I updated my computer and now I can't play mov files from anywhere - won't play in FCP 7, Quicktime. Not sure what updates they were specifically since i hit the "update All" button without going over each one. Please help!! operating on 10.6.8 with FCP7

Just take a look at the last few days posts here and you'll see many people with the same problem and some possible solutions.
But you should never do any software updates unless you have a bootable backup of your startup drive.  FCP7 is no longer being supported by apple and updating anything is fraught with dangers.

  • Can't play .mov files in Xine

    Hi
I am pretty new to Arch but it is great so far.  I am running vanilla KDE4 with Xine as the Phonon backend.  One problem I'm having is that I can't play .mov files.  Other stuff like .wmv and .avi play ok.  I also have the codecs package installed.
For example, no luck with this file
    http://media.crossfit.com/cf-video/Cros … llUps1.mov
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the forums DeKay.
This isn't going to help, but I can confirm this using Xine 1.2 (dev) and almost a pure FFmpeg backend. ffplay and Mplayer can both play this file properly, so it's without a doubt a Xine problem. I ran a gdb trace on it and didn't really get anything to report upstream either.

  • Can not play any video after update to 4.4.2

Can not play any video after update to 4.4.2, it says always that i have to reconnect my HDMI Cable, reason HDCP error.

    I have made some tests,
I can only view Trailers, every thing else dosn't work any more. I could not play any Video via Airplay. I tried to do it fom my IPhone 4, my IPad 1 and from my MacBook Pro 15"/i7 2 GHz/Mac OS10.7.2.
It always says the same error.
I reset the divice again and made a restore, but the same error.
I change the HDMI cable, same error.
It works fine before, I had 4.4.1 on it. I'm using a Toshiba Beamer MT700.
    Need some help

  • Can't play .mov file!!

    hello,
i'm having some trouble playing .mov-files.. I can watch trailers on apple.com but when I have a mov-file on the pc, it opens with a flashy green screen and pressing play will only give my a static (mostly green) and no noise.. this goes also for iTunes, movies there i cannot open but i can watch them on my ipod..
    anybody any ideas?
    thanks

What codec is this HD file? If they shot and captured in the Sony XDCAM EX format, FCP 5.1.4 won't be able to see that. The XDCAM EX support comes only with FCP 6.0.3.

  • Quicktime can´t play .mov files

Iphoto doesn´t recognize movies from iphone (.mov files)
When I attach my iphone to import movies I made with my iphone 4 into iphoto, Iphoto tell´s me it can´t read the format (.mov files).
Quicktime cannot play .mov files either. I reinstalles ILife´11, that didn´t help. Importing the files into imovie doesn´t work either, because imovie always crashes. I can´t drag and drop the movies from my iphone via iphoto to my desktop - does anyone know how to do that?
Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Been to the Genius Bar, but they couldn´t help.

In case anyone has the same problem, this was my solution:
    1. install Quicktime 7 from your old snow leopard CD, don´t download from the internet
    2. then follow the instructions that Neutronjon gave in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3211124?start=0&tstart=0, if you have the same error message
I have had this problem for a year now, tried all sorts of things, and this finally worked!

  • HT2518 I can't open MOV. files on my new mac, please help

Hi I'm new to mac's and I love my new toy, but I'm having a little problem with transferring my video's from my old PC. I've tried manually transferring my mov. files from my PC hard drive to my mac. All the videos used to open up on the PC with Quick Time, now when I try to open them up on the mac it says QT can't open this type of file? Any ideas please

You should download VLC and try viewing the .mov file with it - for troubleshooting.

  • Can't play .MOV files in Quicktime after upgrading to OSX 10.6

Recently upgraded from OS X (10.5) to OS X (10.6).  .MOV files played fine in Quicktime before the upgrade.

I recorded the movie using a camera, and the file plays on the camera as a movie... I'm stumped.
Then I suggest you compare the size of the playing file on your camera with the size of the non-playing file on your computer—they may not be the same. As QTKirk indicated, 40.37 KB seems unreasonable for any normally encoded non-anamorphic 1280x720 MPEG-4/AVC file more than a few frames long. For comparison purposes, a typical 1280x720 JPEG photo compressed to its smallest file size setting on a Mac would have a file size on the order of 100 KB. Other ways to look at your file would be...
    a) if it is one second long, then its data rate is on the order of 322.96 Kbps
    b) if it is two seconds long, then its data rate is on the order of 161.48 Kbps
    c) if it is three seconds long, then its data rate is on the order of 107.65 Kbs
etc., etc., etc. which is unheard of for any reasonable amount of quality for 1280x720 HD dimensions in this compression format.

  • Can't play MOV file! Help!

I received a large MOV (HD) file from a supplier who also uses FCP. I'm trying to load and play the file in FCP but it just plays blank. I can't even play it on QT. It's a blank screen. I have QT Pro Version 7.5.5 (249.13). Do I need to upgrade QT? Am I missing components either in QT or FCP? I have FCP version 5.1.4.

Note he said his version of Final Cut is several generations older than the one the file was authored in so somehow these codecs will not magically appear in his computer. If they were there now it would play now. Note you are also sugegsting to take the phantom codecs from the location they need to be and copy them to the same location. If they are not there he cannot, if they are there then you don't have to.
Also DivX is unrelated to Final Cut and it is a mistake to use it on any mac (vs. the use of Perian, which is free and handles DivX).
Kirk's advice is right. Or he can pay the $ and upgrade to a version of Final Cut that is equal to the senders version.

  • HT3775 My Quicktime Player says that it can't play .mov files...

has anyone else experienced this or do you have any suggestions to remedy the situation?

I'm sorry, I should have included
"and I actually need to use the .mov because I'm currently working on a film collaboration project, I'm an audio student, and compressing it into a different file type (particularly mp4) messes up the frame rate and thus destroys the timing of all of the audio I have already programed to match the final video format."
    but I guess I didn't feel the need ...
anyhow, it turns out my particular quicktime will record and export .mov files which it will also read, and I've used this specific .mov file on another computer both in Pro Tools and in Quicktime, so it's a my comp specific seeming problem which makes me wonder if there is A) something wrong with my quicktime or B) a setting somewhere that I'm not finding.
Unfortunately the Google search I did proved a bit fruitless.

  • How can I play mov files on my iPad?

    Any 3rd party apps?

Does this app run in the background allowing me to view MOV files on the web or is it a converter that I need to input a file to? I run into a number of sites that rely on the MOV format to present its content. Of coarse right now I cannot view this Apple format on my iPad.

  • Buying a new MAcBook Pro - How do i move files and office for Mac

I am buying a new MacBook Pro and have a license for my office for Mac 2008. Can I re-install into the new computer or do i need to buy a new license? Also, how do i move all my itunes, photos, and files from one to the other!

Use TDM for transferring files, drag libraries into folders (iTunes Library into iTunes Folder for example). The Firewire cable will need to be a 6 to 9 pin, or an adapter.
If you're giving up the pB, De-authorize it for iTunes.
Don't do applications between G4 and Intel machines, better to reinstall.
Uninstall Office and use your key on the new Machine. Run Office update.
Connecting Your PowerBook to Another Computer Using FireWire Target Disk Mode.
If you want to transfer files between your PowerBook and another FireWire-equipped
Macintosh computer, or you have a problem that prevents your computer from starting
up, you can use FireWire Target Disk Mode to connect to another computer. When you
start up your computer in FireWire Target Disk Mode, the other computer can access
your PowerBook as if it were an external hard disk.
Note: When using FireWire Target Disk Mode, it’s a good idea to connect your power
    adapter to the PowerBook.
To connect your PowerBook to another computer in FireWire Target Disk Mode:
1 Make sure that your PowerBook is shut down.
2 Use a FireWire cable to connect your PowerBook to another FireWire-equipped
    computer.
3 Start up your PowerBook and immediately hold down the T key.
Your PowerBook display shows the FireWire logo. The other computer’s display shows
the PowerBook internal hard disk icon. You can now drag and drop files between the
    computers.
4 When you finish transferring files, drag the PowerBook hard disk icon to the Trash.
5 Press the power button (®) on the PowerBook to shut it down, and then disconnect
    the FireWire cable.

  • Can't play audio files from pre-Intel Mac

I have some audio files from my old PowerPc Mac (around 1998) which I'd dearly like to be able to hear again on my 2011 Intel G5 Mac (10.7.4).
The files were created by me on the old Mac using the basic sound recording software that came with all Macs. The files are just people speaking.
I have attached an image of the icon that is associated witho these files now. For some of these files, the properties show the file type as "QuickTime Player.app Document".I tried opening the files using Quicktime Player app, to no avail.
Other files are shown as being a "Unix Executable file" type.
I also have other files from the old Mac with this same icon. With those that I know were text files of some kind, I have just simply added .txt at the end of the filename and hey presto, the file is viewable again. I haven't been so lucky with the others.
I imagine also that its not so simple with these audio files but I wouldn't know what file extension to use as I haven't worked with audio files before.
Also, is there a way to keep these files in some generic format, to avoid this problem happening again in the future, as technology advances?
If you can help with this problem, please reply.

    .... on my 2011 Intel G5 Mac (10.7.4)
There is no such thing as an Intel G5 Mac.
