Can't play songs from nano while in iTunes

When my nano is connected to my PowerBook G4, all of the songs on the nano are displayed, but they are grayed-out and I can't play them or add more songs to the nano or anything. Is this how it's supposed to work?
Thanks in advance!
Anton & Celia

Thats the same way that the mini works/worked... you've set up the iPod to sync with a playlist or your Library and it 'locks' the iPod... If you want to change whats on the iPod you alter the playlist's on your computer that the iPod is sync'd to (just dont delete the songs from your library)... Next time you dock the 'pod it'll update the change in songs.
If you want to have it unlocked you set it up on your computer to not 'auto-update'. The songs then will not be grey-ed out and it works more like a conventinal play list as in you drag and drop onto the iPod icon and delete from the iPod itself.
I think that if you pluged it into someone else's computer you cant play the songs because they don't own them (have the same library). I know you can do that of the full size iPod but not of the Shuffle (it gives you a message about the other computer's library being different and you'll have to wipe your iPod if you want to use the new library) I haven't tried with my mini. There are programs that let you take music off your iPod, but I'm Australia and I don't know if they're legal where you are (technically iPods or even iTunes aren't even legal in Australia)
Dont change the FAT32 format of your nano.

  • How do you (or can you) play songs from your ipod on itunes?

Im trying to play my the songs on my iPod with itunes that I just installed on my friends laptop. The problem is, the place where it says Charles's (me) Laptop, the songs are all grayed out and I cant select any of them.

Grey text when you look at the content and lock symbol at the bottom of the screen simply shows that your iPod is set to "automatically update songs and playlists". If you want to access your iPod directly, play it through your iTunes, connect it to a second computer etc. you just need to change the update method to "Manually manage songs and Playlists" in the iPod preferences. Check out the links below and make the change on your own computer before you connect it to the second one:
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
    Managing Your Songs Manually
    Some additional info: iPod 101
The iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes (Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab):
    1) Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synced to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.
    2) Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer.
    3) Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to the iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to the iPod.

I can only play songs from the cloud that are checked with a dark checkmark-I have many other songs with a faint check that don't play

Restoring from backup will result in the iPod being like it was when the backup was made. If you restore via iTunes, you have to have all the synced media in your iTunes library since those are not included in the iPod backup.

    Let's double-check your AX's settings...
To set up AirTunes on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
    AirPort tab
    - Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
    - Wireless Network: <select your Belkin wireless network>
    Music tab
    - Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
    - Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
    - iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
    - iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
    - Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Can't play songs from iTunes library on MacBook Pro

I can't play anything from my iTunes (10.0) library on my MacBook Pro. When I try to, I get message that song could not be used as original file could not be found, and offer to locate it, and I end up with an exclamation mark against that file. Any ideas how to fix this?
PS Not having any problems syncing to iPhone and playing music from there.

Iphone will sync or manually manage with one and only one computer at a time.
Syncing or manually managing to another will indeed erase the current content and replace with the content from the new computer.

  • Can't import songs from music library to itunes!

I have no problems importing songs from audio cds into itunes, but it won't recognize any of the files that i have in other folders of my computers (in mp3 format). and when i select 'import' and these songs, it just doesn't do anything. any suggestions to help??? thanks!
    dell inspiron 4100   Windows XP

Most of them are files burned from an audio CD onto another computer, and then saved onto a USB device and then transferred onto my computer (I no longer have the original CDs, hence the roundabout procedure). some of the files however, are simply from 'my music' folder that i had previously burned onto my computer before installing itunes. i've checked the status of all the files--and none are protected. any suggestions? thanks!
Reknath, where did these files come from? If there
were downloads from other websites, they are probably
protected & that's why you can't get them into iTunes.

  • Can't synch songs from iphone to macbook itunes?

I must have accidentally deleted the five most recent albums I bought on itunes from my computer, because on my itunes I get an '!' next to them, and I can't find them on my computer or my external hard-drive (where I generally store my music, and have backups of my computer). I then tried to redownload these from itunes, but if I click on them in store I just get 'already downloaded' and I can't do anything - I can't even buy them again.
On my iphone, I could recover the songs using the cloud symbol, so I have them there, but now I can't get them from the phone to my laptop itunes. I tried transfer purchases, but it didn't work - nothing seemed to happen, and then I still get the '!' and 'itunes can't locate your files' message on my macbook itunes.
Is there any way I can get the songs from my iphone to my macbook? All the missing albums were purchased from itunes, some on my phone, some on my computer, both on the same apple account.

    Try this:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
you should be able to download the songs again using you purchase history.

  • How can I play songs from a specific genre in album order? (soundtracks) I just upgraded from and Ipod nano 5th generations and would like to be able to listen to my soundtracks without having to choose a different album all the time.

    Question says it all!

You really can't. However, you can create a new playlist and add whole albums at a time to it and then when you play it back, be sure that the shuffle is not enabled and then you can hear whole albums from a certain genre in album order

  • How can I transfer songs from nano to itunes library?

I initially acquired songs from my father's cd's and computer. Came home, set up itunes here and want to transfer my dad's songs into itunes. Help! Thank you!

If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and it won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

  • My hard drive crashed - can I transfer songs from iPod back into iTunes?

My computer's hardrive crashed and I had to replace the entire hardrive. (Grrrrrr!) I lost the folder that contained all of my music. I re-downloaded iTunes onto my computer with the new hard drive but now my library is empty. All my songs are still in my iPod...
Is it possible to do a "reverse" transfer. In other words, put the songs from my iPod back into my iTunes. If so - HOW?
I'm afraid to hook up my iPod to my computer because I don't want the automatic upgrade to start and then my iPod will be empty too.
    Please send help!

As iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. When you connect you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No*. Pressing "Yes" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it.
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box: Managing Your Songs Manually
You can't sync or drag your music back directly from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs but not playlists back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.

Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are quite cheap these days and you can get loads of storage for quite a small outlay.

  • Import songs from nano to new iTunes- my comp crashed and I lost everything

hi all, (my first post ever - pls be patient as I'm a total computer novice)
my home desktop is running windows xp but recently it crashed and to cut a long story short, had to reinstall windows xp. after i loaded a new iTunes, i thought all i had to do was to put the back up cds i'd made of my apple store purchases and hey presto.
1.unfortunately the new iTunes doesn't seem to recognise the discs? am i doing something wrong?
2.i've also read lots of posts and i believe if i want to transfer my songs from my nano to my new iTunes I'll need to buy software? is this correct and if so can anyone recommend a particular program.
    3. i now have 2 authorised computers, however as I won't be using the previous iTunes which was the one I lost when my computer crashed, is there any way I can get that 'credit' back so to speak.
many thanks for any help, have to say that buying an iPod nano has tested my patience and with all the rules and restrictions, and going on the sheer no. of posts, have to ask myself is it really all worth it, particularly for computer illiterates like me, perhaps I'll leave them for the younger generation after all.

That's what backups are for. Use Time Machine. It's free and external drives are cheap. To recover your iPhone's content requires the use of third party utilities. Success is not guaranteed. Read:

  • Can't play music from my iphone on itunes?

I don't understand this problem. I haven't done it in about a year, but I used to be able to play my iphone library of songs on my laptop through itunes.
Now all my music is grayed out. I checked to see if its authorized, and it is. That is fine.
The mp3's are not bought through itunes, if that makes any difference? (CD's, old collections, etc...)
I can play it fine from my iphone.
THanks for any suggestions. I tried reinstalling as well, no dif.

I have been having the same problem... And basically what I was finally told by the folks at the apple store, is that there is no way to do this without syncing, and I don't want to sync. I want my music to be mobile, I don't want to have to copy it to every computer I want to listen to it on. I want to listen to it from the device, and be able to buy a new album at work or at home. This is a major disappointment for me, as every other device I have owned including my iPod Touch had this capability. I could authorize 5 machines and manually sync, and the music on that device could be played and managed on those authorized machines. For example, my wife has her own music collection, and I have mine, but we have a media center connected to our flat-screen in the living room, that we use for playing music when we are entertaining guests, and with our old iPods and iPod Touch devices, we could unplug one of our devices and plug the other persons in and listen to music from both our libraries without copying the music to that computer. Now with our iPhones there is no way to keep our seperate librarys and be able to play music on multiple computers in our house and at work, which we have always been able to do until our iPhones. The whole point of the iPhone for me was to be able to combine two devices and now because of the lack of this feature I still have to keep all our iPods around too... Dumb. I almost took our phones back because of this, and if apple doesn't fix it, I probably won't buy another. They should have at least mentioned this little fact before selling the devices to us. I know it's a different device, but it's similar enough that you expect it to work the same as the iPod and iPod Touch. It's not like I am wanting to be able to copy music from the device to multiple machines, it's exactly the opposite... I just want to be able to copy music to the device and listen to it at home and at work... why all apples other devices do this, and the iPhone doesn't is completely perplexing to me, and a serious oversight on there part.

  • How to play songs from iPhone 3G in iTunes on the Computer

    Hello
Maybe my question is some bit silly but I am also more than perplex at this moment. For storage reasons all my iTunes song files (no purchased songs from iTunes store, but all CD imported) are stored on a server volume.
Syncing my iPhone 3G together on my PowerBook with iTunes works well but ... when I am on travel I would like to play (only to play, not to transfer!) the synced songs from my iPhone on my connected PowerBook on iTunes in order to stream the music to an Apple Airport Express Adapter. I can see the songs greyed out on my iPhone but I can not play them.
Is there something wrong in my iTunes configuration or does I have missed an important "concept"? Do I really need to carry with me my iPhone together with an external HD drive where all songs files are stored on it? In this "application" case the iPod functionality of my iPhone 3G would be really useless. I can belief that.
Thanks for any advice, best regards
    André

    Hello
Thank you for your response. I would like to play the songs on my iPhone on the very same computer, account and iTunes Library I synced my iPhone with. Although there is no play access to the songs on my iPhone from iTunes. I thought I could take them with me and play the songs on my iPhone to the very same computer I synced it with. It Seems not to work as concept? So I think I have to buy a "stupid" docking station to make it complicate.
    Thank you, André

  • I have multiple itunes accounts and had to do a restore.  I can only see songs from one of the itunes accounts on my new iphone.

My old iphone died on me so I had to purchase a new one.  A guy at the Apple store helped me with a restore via iCloud.  I have two itunes accounts, one for US and another for oversea itunes.  I only see songs I purchased in US itunes on my new iphone, which is my iCloud account ID as well.  How do I have the songs I purchased in another foreign itunes to also appear on my new phone?

Are those songs in the iTunes library on the computer the device is normally synced with?  If so, sync them to the device.
