Can't preview or play imported MPEG2 files

I captured numerous video files using Pinnacle Studio 14 and rendered them into MPEG2. The files play fine in Windows Media Player or VLC player.  I can also edit them with Windows Movie Maker.  However, when I import these files into PE 9, they play in bursts and break up showing green blotches.  I have been able to eventually edit the content in PE9 by transcoding them to wmv files using Moviemaker, by that is very tedious.  Why won't PE9 work properly with these files? I have this problem both on an XP machine and on a new Windows 7 machine.  Does PE9 require special CODECs?  If so, which ones  and where should  I get them?
Thanks for any help.

  • Importing Mpeg2 files

Hi, I'm new on using a mac for my movies. I converted some of my windows mpeg2 files so I can play them on quicktime without issue. I can start dragging them into imovie and it starts importing but stops right at the beginning without any comment or warning.
Any idea? Thanks for your help!

Hi movie-newcomer - welcome to the forum!
iMovie's native format is DV. MPEG2 material needs to be converted - see here for advice, and discussions, and the software required:

  • Why doesn't iMovie HD import MPEG2 files?

    Dear Discussion Group,
Can you please tell me why iMovie HD imports MPEG4 files, but not MPEG2 files?
It would appear that the DV8 camcorders have been withdrawn from the marketplace, with the exception of miniDV, and there are only a few models of them available.
In their place are miniDVD and Hard Drive Digital camcorders, the vast majority og which record in the MPEG2 format, not MPEG4!
The industry leader, Sony, doesn't make a single digital camcorder that upports MPEG4.
So, why does Apple support this newer technology in iMovie HD? Will there be support in future releases of iMovie?
    Owen Cobb

Only the iMovie product manager at Apple can really answer that question. Maybe the next upgrade will add this feature. On the PC, the consumer video editing app Adobe Premiere Elements 1.0 didn't support MPEG-2 editing either, but added it in version 2.0, and improved it with 3.0.

That only applies to iMovie, not iMovie HD. When you capture from a HD miniDV camcorders with iMovie HD, it does exactly that: convert the MPEG-2 stream and then edit it. HD miniDV camcorders record in MPEG-2 to fit 1 hour of HD video onto the same 1 hour miniDV tapes that are used for SD camcorders. The limitation is that iMovie HD supports this only for HD camcorders with Firewire connections.

I just checked on the Sony website, and found 6 HD camcorders that record in AVCHD (which is MPEG-4), to either hard disk, DVD, or flash memory.

  • Premiere CS6 cann't import MPEG2 files

    Hi,
Whenever I try to import MPEG2 videos in to Adobe Premiere CS6, I get the following error:
"There was an error decompressing Audio or Video...."
Doe's anybody know what is the reason for that?
    Thanks

I usually visit this forum since 2006. I Had another Adobe ID, but forgot the password, and as i lost access to email, used to make the forst ID, I did this other ID about a year ago.
I have followed and contributed to dozens of posts on the Audition, Encore, Premiere, Soundbooth, that useless software, since that year. In ALL posts of this forums , we found this same MVPs, with their "maybes" or "figured out" about everything. Is not my account, but this is very time consuming, so I wondering  if they have time for other things in life.
There are few posts that I write something in the solution, as this demand research, test and post the result. but when I do, it is a final and tested solution. For example, in 2009 i resolving a problem from a bloak, that i have to write a software driver to him. I spent 2 months in that job, but i resolved his problem, not these "maybes" or "perhaps", or else "I heard that" or "try this," or "try it".
In forums in my opinion is when you post an answer to a question has to be "THE ANSWER",  definitive, correct, tested, to solve the problem of who asked for help there. This demand, days, a week, months  sometimes.

  • No preview when I import DNG files from Leica M9

WAV files in iTunes don't have ID3 tags like you want.

Short answer, I don't think you can do this with iTunes.

  • DVD Studio pro 3 - cannot import mpeg2 files

    Hi,
I have some mpeg2 source files. They are dvd-spec mpeg2 (I think). They are muxed mpeg2, interlaced 29.97 fps. However they will not import. If I demux 'em the audio will come in, but not the Video. QT 7 Pro says the frame size is 640x480 (although lower-level programs will correctly recognize it as 720x480), and the frame rate as 30fps (again lower level programs will say its 29.97 fps).
The mpeg2 comes from a hauupage MPEG2 hardware capture card - it has not been transcoded. The format I guess would be interlaced TV-like input.
Anyone import these kind of mpeg2 without transcoding?

    Hi Ryan,
Ideally the mpegs should be elemental streams.
Try demuxing using MpegStreamclip from macupdate. If you can change the settings of your encoder to give you elemental streams that would be a great start.
Also there are many flavours of mpeg and their headers do very considerably and DVDSP doesn't recognise several of them.
You may need to use a utility such as MpegAppend to remedy the situation.
    Good Luck.

  • Why can't Preview display pdf 1.5 files correctly ?  A bug ?

I have been trying to figure out why Preview and Safari have a problem with some PDF files.  The problem is that some text is not shown in the correct font. Text which should be in bold, italic or bold italic serif font (e.g. Times New Roman) is being shown in plain sans serif (e.g. Arial regular).
I have found that the PDF files causing problems were created in Acrobat/PDF 1.5 format.  Files created with PDF 1.4 or earlier seem fine.  The software used to create the file doesn't seem to make any difference.  I have tested files created with Distiller, MS Office etc. and the only consistent feature of problem files is PDF 1.5.
The problem affects printing from Preview as well.
Acrobat Reader (v10.0.2) is displaying and printing these files with no problems !
Has anyone else found this ?  Is this a bug in OS X ?
    Many thanks
    Garry

It is not that uncommon to have to use Adobe Reader for some pdf files instead of Preview, their capabilities are just not identical.
You can report the problem to Apple here:

  • Can I choose to not import mp3 file into iTunes?

On my Macbook I have a Music folder on my hard drive where I save all my music I copy from a CD or download from another source other than the iTunes store. I know that when I import into iTunes essentially another digital copy is made and stored in iTunes and that I have the option to either turn that off or delete the original file in my Music folder. Because I now have two copies of each song, it's filling up my hard drive quickly.
I am not keen on deleting the original files since I don't want to disrupt the integrity of the file in case I ever decided to migrate away from iTunes. If I choose the option in iTunes to not copy the media into iTunes and keep it in my original file, are there any cons to doing that? I'd be open to listening to any other options as well.
Thanks - any help is appreciated.

The file is not altered. It is the same file. It is simply copied into the iTunes folder.
You can use it elsewhere now, same as you can if you later decide to "migrate away from iTunes".

You have files in multiple places. iTunes library files in one place, media files in other places.
It is much, much easier to manage everything if it is in one folder (iTunes).
If you put the files into /Music/iTunes/ iTunes media/Automatically add to iTunes/ folder, it will be moved and not copied. Nothng to delete.
I keep a shortcut to this folder on my desktop..

  • Can't open sequences or import clips - File format not supported

We have an iMac workstation here running Premiere that will not open projects or import clips.  Here's the sequence of events that led to this:
    1.  Premiere was locking up on the splash screen whenever it got to "ImporterQuicktime.bundle".  I tried trashing preferences and launching with plug-ins disabled and received the same freeze.  Based on forum recommendations I removed "ImporterQuicktime.bundle" and "ExporterQuickTimeHost.bundle" from the plug-ins folder inside the package.  The software launched fine - but none of the Quicktime files in the project were working.  So I then took copies of the above 2 files from the iMac next to this one, with the exact same configuration, and pasted them into the plug-ins folder.  Since then - launching the software has generated the below errors.
    2.  Attempting to open any project gives a long error that starts as:  The preset used by one or more sequences in this project requires third-party components that could not be located.
    3.  Starting a new project and attempting to drag any Quicktime ProRes media into the project gives the error:  File Format not supported.
I have trashed the preferences, re-installed the Pro Apps Quicktime Codecs, de-authorized the computer and re-authorized it, and upgraded Adobe Premiere from 7.0 to 7.2.  None of which fixed the issue.
I'm thinking about trying a complete re-install of Premiere next.  Any other ideas?
    Here's the details:
    Premiere Pro CC 7.2
    Mac OS 10.8.5
iMac late 2012 model, 32Gb RAM, 2Gb video card
    Thanks.
    Don Hertz

I seem to have figured out a work around.  It appears the 7.2 upgrade is making it so that our Quicktime XDCAM 422 clips are not properly recognized.  Clips both currently in a project and new clip imports do not work.  Attempting to import clips using this codec generates the error message:  Unsupported format or damaged file.  This has happened on both an iMac system running 10.8.5 OS and a Macbook Pro running 10.9.1 OS - both of which were upgraded to Premiere 7.2.  In both cases - uninstalling and re-installing Premiere resolved the issue.

  • Can Quicktime Pro 7 play dvcpro hd files?

    I have a Macbook Pro os x 10.5.7.
I have Quicktime Pro player 7.6.2
I have been trying to play .mov files that are dvcpro hd files converted from Final Cut. Sound only, no video. A window pops up when I go to play the file that says, "Additional software is required to play this media. It may be available from the quicktime components page." But of course it doesn't say what and on that page I couldn't find anything that seemed to manage this issue.
After all my research I learned that I may not be able to play those files without Final Cut, however, I just played them on my brothers macbook pro, etc (same deal as my machine) and they played. The only difference was in his Quicktime preferences there was a reference to Final Cut color at the bottom of the box. He doesn't have Final cut on his machine and we have the same version Quicktime.
So, is there a codec or something I'm missing to get these files to play? Please help...been searching for an answer for hours to no avail and I really need to get into these files.
    thanks
    C

That's always an option and I've thought about it but my brother's computer is not always available (like now as he has left the premises with it) and I really want to try to work out this kink. Sorry, I didn't say that I actually need to edit these videos and I don't want to lose quality either by converting them to something that may not have the hd great quality they have now.
He does not have FCP and I'm pretty sure he doesn't have Color either. And I found out that he actually has an older operating system than me. Any other suggestions?
    Thanks...really appreciate your time!

  • How do you import mpeg2 files into final cut express?

I have recently show my sons christening, and relied on a friend to do ths shooting. One of the tapes unfortunatley has broken, and I have had a second party transfer this footage onto DVD for me. He is also sending the footage through as an MPEG 2 file. Is there anything I can do with this using FCPE?

Convert the DVD's VOB files into a format that works natively in FCE.  For DVD footage (which is SD), use MPEG Streamclip to do the converting.  Here's a tutorial on using MPEG Streamclip: http://www.secondchairvideo.com/?p=739
MPEG Streamclip is freeware, but you may need to purchase the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component from Apple if you don't have it already.

  • How can I avoid duplicates on importing ics files

I'm a new Mac user and would like to start using the Mac for everything including my diary.
For a while I will be working in parallel with another calendar (I'm using the Lightning add-in to Thunderbird).
    Scenario as follows:
Export events from Lightning in ics format.
Import into iCal - works fine.
The Lightning calendar is updated - events added and updated and then re-exported.
When I import again into iCal, instead of updating events previously imported, duplicate events are created.
This appears to be because iCal is assigning a new UID to every event that it imports. If iCal used the UID defined in the input stream, it would work fine.
    The iCal standard (RFC2446 http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2446 ) states:
CUAs must persist the following component properties: "UID", "RECURRENCE-ID", "SEQUENCE", and "DTSTAMP".
If iCal is not persisting the UID, then it would appear to be breaking the iCalendar Transport-Independent Interoperability Protocol as defined in the referenced RFC.
Is there a workaround or any hope that iCal might be fixed to comply with the standard?
    Thanks

On your Mac, for duplicates, switching Contacts off then back on in System Preferences > iCloud may prevent duplicates.
On the iPhone / iPad tap Settings > iCloud. Make sure Contacts and Calendars are swtiched on.
Try restarting your Mac and your iOS devices when items won't sync as they should.
To restart an iOS device:  Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button down until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone back on, press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
