Can't print from any application in OS X Snow Leopard??

Before the print dialog box comes up, the spinning beachball wheel comes up.
I then have to force quit the application. I have tried resetting the print system but no joy.
I have done a complete wipe and time machine restore and the problem is still there.
I have binned the print prefs and also the relevant print folder and downloaded updates. not worked.
Done disk permissions and disk first aid.
Any other suggestions??!!

Yep, tried that, however I created a new user and the problem was still there, so I used time machine to go back a couple of weeks and restore the main library folder. Now it prints fine, so there was something in that folder the system didn't like

  • Can't print from Mail, TextEdit, or Preview in Snow Leopard

Installed Snow Leopard on a new Mac Mini with a newly formatted drive. Successfully set up network HP printers using IP Printing option. Able to print to these printer from all installed applications EXCEPT TextEdit, Preview, and Mail. Print dialog never displays at all after selecting "print" in Mail. Print dialog window does display for TexEdit and Preview but clicking "print" in the dialog window all the options blank out and can't cancel or close the print dialog window without quitting app.
However, when we take this same mini to a different physical location on a different network, printing works normally in all apps. We are guessing that Appletalk has something to do with this. The problem network uses a Cisco 3600 router. We disabled Appletalk in the configuration but that had no effect.

Nothing shows up in CUPS error log to trying to print from Mail. Pasted below is consistent message we get in Console when attempting to print from Mail.
Today, inexplicably, we can print from Preview and TextEdit.

  • Cannot print from ANY application after upgrade to 10.4.8 !!!

    Hi all,
as it is written in the subject.
Up to yesterday, I had OS 10.3.9, everything ok, could print from any application.
Then I moved to Tiger and to the last version (10.4.8).
And today the "nice" surprise: either from Preview, Texshop, Word, any web browser... I cannot print anymore!! As soon as I go to file/print, the application crashes, any suggestions??
    Thanks a lot

Hmmm. It sounds like a possible problem with the system prior to updating. If you've done this already don't be upset by the suggestion. I'm just trying to cover the bases.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.1 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X. Note that Disk Warrior will not work on Intel Macs.
Download the standalone 10.4.8 Combo Updater (be sure to get the correct version - Intel or PPC - for your Macs. Reinstall the update using the Combo Updater.
As an added precaution I would recommend you first boot into safe mode before doing the above.
There is a shareware utility called Printer Setup Repair (www.macupdate.com) that you can also try. It is sometimes very useful for fixing problems with the printing system.

  • Upgrade to tiger, can't print from any app

    Hi All
I normally fix my own problems, but this has me stumped.
I've upgraded to tiger and done a software update to 10.4.7.
Now I can't print from any app.
I've done the "reset printing system" but this hasn't worked.
All my printers are ethernet networked, no USB.
At this time of writing, I have just managed to print from indesing CS2, but nothing else, mail, textedit, acrobat, none of them work...
...Don't suppose anyone has any ideas?
PS, when I attempt to print, my app is quit and I have to relaunch.

I had the same problem when I upgraded to Tiger. I have a HP PSC 2175 All-in-one printer. I solved my problem by uninstalling the HP printer software, emptying the trash, restarting, and reinstalling the HP printer software. I also installed the lastest HP printer driver, which I downloaded from the HP website.
I repaired permissions after doing all that, and now everything seems to print fine.
I suspect the same steps might work for other printers, as well.
The relevant page from the HP site is here: http://tinyurl.com/ztkwq
Macfixit also has a tutorial for troubleshooting printer problems. I have not tried any of the solutions which involve downloading troubleshooting software. Maybe someone else here can say whether the software mentioned in the article works well or not. You can find the Macfixit information here: http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060724111816602

  • Choosing print from any applications forces application to quit

Just tonight, when I choose to print from any applicaiton [mail, Safari, etc...] it forces that application to quit and ofcourse nothing is printed.
Additional info: I was running Disk Utility and erasing the empty space on my HD, but since it was taking so long, I browsed the web, emailed, and did other things while it worked in the background - probably a bad decision by me since in the end when I told Disk Utility to "skip" erasing empty space it wouldn't skip and hung and I eventually did force quit Disk Utility.
More additional info: I think this is definitely a printing problem, and just maybe if I can get into the print que I can cancel the jobs that are in there - how do I get to the que.
Even more additional info: I'm using Tiger and a HP Deskjet 3940 printer. I have shutdown, unplugged the printers usb cord, and turned the printer on and off before restart.

    Thanks for your help.

  • Officejet 6600 - Cannot Print from any application since Vista Update on 10/15/14

Our wireless connected printer had been working fine.  On 10/15/14, updates from MS were installed.  After that, we can generate test pages from HP Printer Assistant but no other application prints.  That includes all MS Office projects, notepad, and any web browser.
We've run the HP Print Doctor and it indicated that there are no problems.  We have since attempted to restore to the last checkpoint before the install and the restore fails.
Has anyone else run into this problem?

    Hey @KPL12345 ,
Thank you for taking the time out of your day to ask that question on the HP Forums today!
I understand that you are experiencing no response from your printer after upgrading to Windows Vista.
Try uninstalling the software using this document >>Uninstalling the Printer Software
Installing the software using this document >>Setting Up the Printer for a Wireless or Wired Network for the HP Officejet 6600 e-All-in-One and 67...
After you have done that, try to print. If you can not print then run the Print and Scan Doctor again.
Hope this helps, let me know.

  • Can't print PDF's to Canon MP560 running Snow Leopard on MacBook

Since upgrading my 2008 MacBook to Snow Leopard a few weeks ago, I've been experiencing problems printing to my Canon MP560. Initially, nothing would print at all, even after updating my drivers, so I uninstalled & reinstalled the printer and it seemed fine.
Now I've tried to print for the first time out of Adobe Reader. At first, it was trying to force my jobs through the rear tray instead of the main paper cartidge, but I forced it through the cartridge through the print settings. Now when I hit print, the printer starts to receive the data, but the printer queue pops up with a generic "An error occurred while printing" message. The job then sits in limbo on my MacBook and the printer sits waiting to receive data, until I manually delete the job from the queue. I've confirmed that I can print from other apps (Word, Firefox); it's only Adobe Reader that fails me. I've made sure Reader was fully updated (it already had been), and the only Mac software update is the Java update that was just released this week. Ive pulled the plug on the printer to restart it, and I've once again uninstalled & reinstalled the printer on my MacBook.
    Any ideas?

Sorry to say this is one of those "I've been having the same %$#@!ing problem" through two OS upgrades and upgrade to Acrobat Pro X. Posting this becasue my symptoms are the same, including the rear tray commandeering, and that the printer is a Canon (MX860).
Can print PDFs from Preview and browsers. Grr....

  • Can't restart in any mode after crash during snow leopard install.

i have had repeated kernel panics. taken laptop to apple store twice in the past few weeks and they found nothing. suggested upgrading to snow leopard (i was on leopard) and the computer froze and flashed during the install and crashed. now it won't start in any mode. not safe mode, off the leopard install disk. i either get a flashing folder with a question mark or just a black screen. anything else i can try or has the system totally crashed. this is an 07 macbook pro.

...do I need to start all over.
Daniel ~ Welcome to the discussions. If you didn't backup iWeb's key Domain file before the clean install, you'll probably need to start over. I say "probably" because even though you didn't deliberately back up the Domain file, perhaps you were running Time Machine — in which case, there's still hope:
Recovering items using Time Machine and Spotlight
Only iWeb's Domain file can be opened in iWeb. See this Apple doc on How to back up MobileMe data. It says:
Any websites you have published with iWeb should still be available within iWeb. iWeb stores everything in a Domain file, normally located in the ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder (although it can be moved). If you no longer have this file, you can view your currently published pages and manually recreate them within iWeb, but there is no way to import published pages back into iWeb.
You can manually back up the Domain file, or use Backup to back it up.
Paragraph 2.3 of this FAQ page gives some tips on how to use published files, graphics, photos, etc., to help rebuild the site from scratch:

  • Can I update from osx 10.4.11 to snow leopard?

I have a mac book pro with OSX 10.4.11 and would like to upgrade it to OSX Snow Leopard.  Can I simply proceed or is there an in between update necessary?  Thanks.
    Mbota2

Purchase a Snow Leopard DVD with which you can upgrade your current system.  Before upgrading do the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If all is OK then continue with the installation of Snow Leopard.

  • Can't Print from various Applications

Safari Application will print, Appleworks, Excel, Word, PowerPoint will not print. E-Mail will. I have a HP Business Jet 1200 v3.3 driver and a HP Color LaserJet 3500 with the most current drivers. I have reset the printer settings, run a program DiskWarrior (Utilities), restart numerous times, checked and repaired all permission three times. I am at a standstill....Can anyone help? Thanks

If you have a box that's still under warranty or under AppleCare, call Apple Support.
You might try using the generic CUPS drivers path (if that's available), and see if that works.

  • Print & Scan not responding in System Preferences; cannot print from any application

I have a MBP running 10.7.5 and all of a sudden any app I use to print (via network printers), freezes the app and does not print. From System Preferences, I cannot access Print & Scan - it does not respond. All other settings in System Preferences seem to work just fine.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

To add to my original post: I created an alternative administrator user account and logged in with it to see if the same problem occurred. The problem does not appear in the new admin account - the Print & Scan works in System Preferences. I printed a couple items with no problem. So this is something tied to my user account. But I still don't know what to do to fix it. I came across the following suggestion online for a similar problem. Would appreciate if someone could confirm if this is what I should do. I am novice when it comes to these types of problems and have never used Terminal to do anything? Here is info: open Terminal to fully shut down the printing system with the command sudo luanchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.cups.cupsd.plist and then open System Preferences to load Print& Scan which should now load without hanging. Then right click on the empty printer list and choose the option to reset the printing system and then restart computer so launcher automatically reloads the cups property list file and then return to System Preferences and set up my printer.
    Thanks!

  • Can't print from 64bit applications

I have tested this on 10.6.8 server and 10.8.X server.
    HP printers are fine.
All my Xerox printers (5790s, 5335s, 7855s, etc) don't work when adding the driver, sharing them out, and then a client tries to print with a 64bit application. I tested this in Google Chrome on my machine (Mac OS X 10.7.5) and it prints just fine, then when I try and do anything in Mail or Textedit it hangs, then tries to print two ghost "Printer Status" reports before my job, ultimately not printing at all.
Xerox has no answer for me, and I've tried their latest drivers 2.94.3. My mac gets the correct driver and information from my print server but then goes nowhere. Has anyone ever heard of something like this?!
    Thanks

If you have a box that's still under warranty or under AppleCare, call Apple Support.
You might try using the generic CUPS drivers path (if that's available), and see if that works.

  • Can't print on HP4M with Macbook Pro using Snow Leopard

    Hello Everyone,
I've tried everything I know...which isn't much...to avoid having to request your help knowing that many people have had similar problems. However, I still can't get my Mac to print with the HP4M printer regardless of what I have tried. I'm using AsanteTalk (Appletalk to Ethernet) to connect to my computer. It worked great with my old iMac but those days are gone. I'm currently using OSX 10.6.6. I did try a parallel to usb cable but that didn't do it either.
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Jim

I recently downloaded HPPrinterDrivers 2-1.6.dmg. It's my understanding that this file is the most current one and is dated 3/24/11. For your info, when I'm using usbtb with the parallel cable, I do get a note saying it sees a usb printer when the HP 4m is connected. Unfortunately, it doesn't contain an HP 4M driver. When I'm using Print Setup withoutt usbtb, however, there are all kinds of Laserjet drivers that can be selected but the old printer always goes into "Pause".
I tried the parallel cable with my wife's Macbook running Tiger this morning and still didn't see the printer. I guess I could try my iMac with the parallel cable and do know that it does work with AsanteTalk. I'm afraid it's about over for the old warhorse but I'll check into resetting the printing system first.
Thanks, again, Greg for all of your help and time!

  • Can not print to PDF (From any application)

I print to PDF's on a regular basis, and my mac has stopped me randomly from having that function.
When I go to Print from any application, and select "Adobe PDF 7.0" from the Printer drop down an grey stop/error sign appears next to that drop down.
Then the print queue appears with a red error and the item that i was printing gives a status of "-" and the comment of "Jobs Stopped"
If I press the "Start Jobs" button I get a progress bar and the status changes to "Printing" ... the progress bar doesn't move and then the status returns to "-" and the item remains un-printed in the queue.
    Please help.
    Thanks.
MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I managed to fix the problem by deleting the folder "com.adobe.print.AdobePDF7" from /Library/Preferences/
    And printed to a PDF
