Can't print from windows to shared Canon MX340

I have a new Canon MX340 on my iMac with Snow Leopard. I'm able to print from this iMac and via sharing, all of the other Macs at home. What I can't do is print from my son's Windows XP netbook. Previously, I was sharing an old HP office jet with no problem, with the new Canon one of two things happens. I used Bonjour to install the printer on the XP side.
- with Generic Postscript selected as the driver I get the following erros in the cups error_log file
E [29/Aug/2010:17:08:37 -0600] [Job 920] No %%Pages: comment in header!
E [29/Aug/2010:17:08:37 -0600] [Job 920] Unable to open raster stream - : No such file or directory

E [29/Aug/2010:17:08:37 -0600] [Job 920] Job stopped due to filter errors; please consult the error_log file for details.
- using the MX340 driver, I simply get a single blank page
I am able to print via a network connection (the MX340 has built in WiFi), but I'd like to know how to do with via the old method.
Any ideas?
THANKS!

The XP Netbook should use the Generic PS driver. I've never found the Canon driver on Windows to work correctly when printing to the Mac shared printer via Bonjour for Windows.
It is unusual you are getting this error. The Mac should be converting the incoming spool file to suit the MX340. Since the Generic PS is not working then you could try the Apple Color LaserWriter 12/600 when using the Bonjour Wizard. I've used this on XP to print to my MP980 shared off 10.6.4 and it worked fine for me.
Personally I would suggest you are better off with using the MX340 wireless. This will remove the reliance on the iMac being available just so that others can print.

I'm running windows on my imac because quicken and quickbooks for mac *****.  I can't print from windows. when I go to the printer troubleshooter it sees my printer but tells me to turn it on.  When I try to print from quickbooks or quicken, it gives me a printer communication error.  help

There have been some patches from Quicken to address these issues, make sure you have the latest updates.  Quicken says only Quicken 2010 is supported in Windows 7 but suggests the following workaround.

  • Can't print to Windows 7 shared printer from Mac OS Lion

    Dear all,
I would like to share my experience battling to figure out how to print to Windows 7 shared printer from Mac OS Lion. Myself had this problem and looking throughly in internet without success. But finally I figured out the solution by myself, hope this can help other Mac user with similar problem.
OK, when I try to setup my new MacBook Pro with OS Lion to connect with my Canon MX308 printer attached to desktop with Windows 7 Ultimate,
    1. I simply select System Preferences>Print & Scan.
    2. Then looks for the + sign just below the box to add a new printer.
    3. From the option toolbar above, I select Windows. I have connect this MacBook with my Windows Network, so the workgroup will appear to the left column.
    4. After I select this group, the computer list will appear in the middle column
    5. Then after I select the computer which my printer connected to, my printer sharename will appear in the right column
    6. Last step is to select the printer I want to use.
    7. After that it will automatically put your printer sharename to the "Name". And then I select my printer driver at "Print Using" and find my printer manufacturer which is Canon MX300 series from driver lists. Finish!
My printer appear in the Printers List. But the problem is everytime I try to print there will be error message saying "ON HOLD Authentication Required".
This problem start to kill me, I search all around for similar problem, but the solution was never worked for me!
Until just now I figured out accidentally for the solution.
THE PROBLEM LIES ON MY PRINTER DRIVER!!!! Although I have downloaded the most update driver from Apple site and Apple Software update said there is no more update for my system!
The solution for my problem is Gutenprint Printer Driver! You can download this driver at http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php, then select for the latest driver gutenprint-5.2.7.dmg. Install this driver!
Then back to Print & Scan in System Preferences, then right click on Printers List box, then choose "Reset Printing System..." to clear the previous failed printers.
After that, repeat the above step 2 - 7. Only for the last step I need to select the Printer Driver for my Canon MX308 for the driver name : "Canon PIXMA MX300 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.7"
Now I can sleep as a baby knowing that my printer make a friend with my new Macbook Pro! Hope this will help others!

I have the same setup but with a Canon MX850.  This did not fix my problem.

  • Can't print from Windows to Mac

I've always had trouble printing to a printer attached to my Mac from Windows. Bonjour used to see the printer, but I could only occasionally actually print. For a while everything but PDFs worked, then even text stopped. As a last resort I tried the "reset printing system" option in System Preferences and then re-added the printer, but now Bonjour doesn't see it at all. I can browse to it via SMB at \\macname\printername, but all I can do is print a test page as Administrator. Regular print jobs and non-admin test pages just disappear - not in the queue on either client or server. Setting it up as an IPP printer instead didn't help.
I'm at the end of my rope here, and any troubleshooting tips are welcome. I'm an IT guy, so technical details are very welcome: TCP ports to check for listeners on, services to look for, registry settings on the Windows end, anything.
    Details:
    Server:
    Mac OS X 10.6.2
HP Photosmart D7560 printer connected via USB using HP Photosmart driver
    Clients:
Windows XP, Windows Vista (32-bit), Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)
All on the same LAN (wireless), no trouble with TCP/IP connectivity (can ssh into the Mac from the Windows boxes, etc). Both Windows Firewall and UAC are turned off on the Vista/7 boxes, guest access is enabled on the Mac in Sharing preferences...
    Any help welcome.
    Thanks!

I followed the instructions at http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3012.html and am having the same issue. Whether setting up manually or using Bonjour, it seems that you have to select an Apple Driver. The problem is that the Windows 7 does not provide Apple drivers. Luckily, I have an old XP installation CD so I can access the printer drivers I need, but because I already installed the printer drivers from my printers CD Windows will automatically install with that driver, not giving me the "have disk" option.
So I tried to install with Bonjour again, which allowed me to pull up the drivers from teh XP installation disk, but then gave me an error that I didn't have permissions to install the selected printer.
So I deleted the Canon driver for my printer from Windows 7 and went through the process described at http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3012.html again. This time I was able to select the Apple Color Laserwriter printer from the XP installation CD, but I got an error message saying that Windows was unable to find an appropriate driver.
At this point, after a couple hours trying to do a simple file share, which should only take 30 seconds, I'm giving up being able to print to a printer connected to a mac from my Windows 7 laptop. Now I have to open files on the mac from the network file share to print.
Mixed having both Macs and Windows machines on the same network is a recipe for a headache.

  • Can't print from Windows XP

I'm a new Mac user with a MacBook Pro, and found I needed to run Windows for a couple of applications so installed Parallels. All applications run fine, except printing from Windows. Have a Canon Pixma MP480 printer at home, and an HP Deskjet at the office. Both print fine from Mac, but no luck from Windows at all. I've tried to troubleshoot the configuration in Parallels, and everything seems set up correctly as far as I can tell (I'm not very tech oriented, though). I have the feeling that there is something very basic that I have missed. Anyone have thoughts on what it might be?

Please post Parallels related questions on the Parallels forums as Apple discussions only provide support for Apple products:

  • Can't print from Windows Explorer

After installing the "HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One Printer - N911a", on a Windows 7 64-bit PC, that is Ethernet connected, I get the following error message:
    Script Error
An error has occurred in the script on this page.
    Line: 2061
    Char: 1
Error: Invalid procedure call or argument
    Code: 0
    URL: res://ieframe.dll/preview.js
When I try to print from Windows Explorer; however, I can print from other applications such as Word and Quicken OK, and I can print from Explorer OK from a Windows XP PC. Anyone have any suggestions?

The issue is caused when Windows creates the printer profile in the control panel that it doesn't correctly create it with the drivers.
We're not going to completely uninstall all the HP software, instead we're going to remove the corrupt Windows printer profile and reinstall it.  Total time for this on an average computer is about 5-10 minutes to completely repair (including reboot).
    1) Navigate to Start Menu > Devices and Printers or Start Menu > Control Panel > Printers
    2) Select each printer profile for the printer with an issue, then select remove device/printer.
    3) Reboot
    4) Navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > HP > insert model # here > Add Printer (or Setup Wizard)
    5) Follow the setup prompts to reinstall the printer profile and it recreates the Windows printer.
    6) Test by printing google.com (uses very little ink when the test page comes out).
Let me know if you have any questions or issues.
    Thanks,
    Dan

  • Can't print from Windows PC to printer on I-Mac USB over wireless network

I am a brand new Mac user after years of Windows frustration.
Canon i9100 connected to I-Mac via USB. Prints OK from I-Mac. Print share enabled. Windows share enabled.
I-Mac on wireless LAN with static IP addresses for all devices.
Dell Windows XP on same wireless LAN.
    Can ping I-Mac OK.
Added printer on Dell through Windows XP using I-Mac static IP address and I-Mac printer name - installed OK, but will not print.
After hours on Apple Support, found and downloaded Bonjour for Windows and installed on Dell. Ran Bonjour on Dell, installed printer OK, but still won't print from Dell.
Very frustrating and I haven't started on my VPN issues yet - thought Apple would be far simpler.

On Windows, after either method of setup, change the driver (on PC) to Apple Color LaserWriter. Apple print queues expect postscript as input.
If this is unsatisfactory, you can create a RAW queue on the Mac (only for sharing the printer, because it will have no driver associated):

  • Can't print to windows 7 shared printer

I have been searching the web, trying to find a solution for the last week, but I can't find anything to help me have my OS X v10.4.11 Mac print to my HP printer connected to a Windows 7 Home Premium desktop. The mac can see the windows files fine and the windows 7 box can see the mac's files just fine. I just can't get the mac to see the printer.
When I browse more printers it sees my windows box, but when I "Choose" it, the mac prompts me for a username/password and won't accept anything I give it, even though the same credentials worked fine when viewing shared files on the windows box from the very same mac.
I also tried creating a printer using the advanced printer setup, specifying the samba address directly like so: smb://user:password@workgroup/server/sharename
    What am I missing?
    Thanks for any ideas...
Forgot to also mention that I had no problems printing to this printer from my macbook when the printer was connected to my old Windows XP box.

I am having the same problem - although I have been working on it for a while longer (which i really hate to admit).
It appears that Windows 7 has dumped any support it had for Samba. (Although I would have sworn I had been printing successfully with the RC of Windows 7 with NO problem, but I wonder if the final version of Windows 7 has changed the TCP/IP stack and print sharing properties.
Had I known on July 1st what I know now, including the new iMac 27" machine - I would have struggled longer on XP and bought my new iMac this week.
Never the less, I am trying to print from my iMac to my Win7 machine which is sharing a printer.
I have been able to get file sharing to work (at least viewing shared files on the Win7 machine via my Mac.
Similar to your message above, I can try connecting via the Windows Workgroup printing features on OSX 10.4 and I can see my machine name under WORKGROUP. I have a USER ID set up on my Win 7 machine with a user ID and password - the same as what my iMac uses.
I can print to the windows 7 machine via XP - but NOTHING via the MAC.
I have tried different renditions of printing using \\WORKGROUP\MACHINENAMESHARED_PRINTERNAME, also using login / password via SMB as well as IP addresses\sharedprintername...
I have also posted for the last several days on the Windows 7 forum of Microsoft but I only get very basic suggestions that don't work. I have also tried changing some of the security settings, and I have also removed firewalls with no success.
I wish I had more to offer, but I'm hoping to help keep this thread alive by adding additional details and postings.

  • Printing from windows 2k server, Canon MP600

Hi, I have a mostly pc home based network, and my wife would like to be able to print from her mac to the networked printer. I can get the printer to show up in "Windows Printing" selection box, and comes up as CanonMP6 with generic postscript printer labeling. If I try to print it appears to send it to the server, i can see the print queue in the server receive something, but never prints. I know it works from windows based clients, so I guess I am wondering if there is a driver issue? I've installed the drivers to the mac, the ones that came with the printer. Any help would be appreciated. Getting tired of swapping the usb cable every time my wife wants to print.
    Thanks

Definitely a driver issue. Canon-provided driver doesn't do network.
Two choices - buy third party driver:
    http://www.printfab.net.
or, set up PC to be postscript translator/server:

  • Officejet 6000 computer connected to windows 7. Can't print from windows XP laptop

Printer connected by USB to the Windows 7 desktop.  Printing is fine.  I have both computers on the same workgroup network, file sharing is ok.  My laptop finds the printer on the network, but there is apparently a driver problem.  The disc that came with the printer will only install on XP and Vista, so  downloaded the drivers for the new windows 7 desktop.  I either get a "Failed to Print" message or "The handle is invalid".  When I tried to connect with the printer through network sharing, and tried to open it, I was told the wrong drivers were located on the server.  It looked for a file with *.inf.  Do I hve the wrong drivers on the desktop or do I need to install the drivers on the laptop?  I never had this problem with my old Vista desktop.
    This question was solved.

If it is not wireless it is USB connected.  So you need to choose USB connected and let the program do it's thing.   Are you trying to share the printer from the desktop to the laptop?  If yes, just go to Add Printer and follow the instruction.  Make sure File and Print Sharing is enabled on the desktop.

  • HP Laserjet 1020 connected to Airport Express - Can't Print from Windows XP

    Hi,
I have been using Airport Express for almost a year now, and it works fine with my old LaserJet 1200 connected to it, meaning that BOTH my ThinkPad(WinXP) and PowerBook(OSX 10.3) prints off the printer nicely. Last week I bought a LaserJet 1020 to replace the old printer. Now I can only print off my Mac, and not the ThinkPad.
    Here are some additional information:
    - Airport Express has been updated with latest updates.
    - Using newest printer driver available from the HP website.
    - New printer works when connected to ThinkPad via USB.
    - New printer works when connected to Airport Express and printing performed using my PowerBook.
Therefore, My conclusion is that Airport Express and Printer is working just fine, and that it's just my ThinkPad not being configured correctly. (Although at the back of my head I am guessing that just MAYBE it's the Airport Express not accepting a different printer)
This is what I did to install the printer from my ThinkPad to work with Airport Express (which is not working):
    1. Add a printer
    2. Local printer attached to computer (no auto detect)
    3. Selected existing TCP/IP port 10.0.1.1
    4. Selected my new printer driver
    5. Finish
I also tried a few things like:
    - Deleting the TCP/IP port and creating it again before installing the new printer again.
    - Off both airport express and printer and on again after about 10sec.Airport was on first, and after the LED turn green, printer was turned on and USB plugged into airport.
    - Restarting my ThinkPad.
I have tried everything that I can think of, and nothing worked... hence this posting to get professional help.

    Hi,
You might want to download and install bonjour for windows to your Thinkpad it is how I got my roomates XP laptop to print on AX.
