Can't print to printer on Windows 7 machine

When I send a document from my MacBook to the printer attached to my Windows 7 desktop, it shows up on the print queue as a document but lags and shows as "spooling". I have yet to get this to work. I successfully networked the computers together for file sharing and whatnot, but printing refuses to work. Like I said, the documents make it to the print queue, but won't actually print.
Router is Linksys WRT54G2 firmware version 1.0.04
printer is Cannon MP240
Mac OS is Snow Leopard
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Even if a suggestion doesn't work, thanks for taking the time to reply!

I had exactly the same issue as you when I wanted to print from my iMac to a printer that was attached to a Windows 7 machine.
I found the solution at an Apple Support page, located at "http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3049".
What really solved my problem was the introduction of the user PASSWORD in the address line, like this:
smb://user:password@workgroup/server/sharename
Read the Apple Support page I mentioned carefully to better understand what you will be doing.
I hope this helps you.

  • I have a Lexmark Prevail Pro 705 printer connected to my network wirelessly. I can no longer scan from it using Image Capture. I can print to it. I can scan from it using a Windows machine. Most updated firmware. Driver v 11.0 Any ideas?

I have a Lexmark Prevail Pro 705. Latest (as of july 30, 2012) firmware. Mac driver v 11.0
I can no longer communicate wirelessly with the scan feature of the printer. I can print no problem using a wireless connection. Using a window's machine I can scan wirelessly from the printer. It seems that my iMac (OSX 10.8, 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 24inch early 2009) is not connecting to it. I can put a USB cord into the computer and scan.
Any ideas? This came up starting 2 weeks ago. I had hoped the operating system upgrade would solve it. It has not. I see nothing on the Lexmark boards about this. Since the printer works fine in both print an scan mode using a windows machine and can print fine from a Mac but not scan I don't have any ideas but I suspect it is the Mac.

  • CUPS Printing Server Discoverable by Windows Machines

I have a server running archlinux on it with a CUPS server. It's used to host a USB printer as a network printer. It can be easily printed to via Linux, Mac, and Windows machines if it is hand configured on each client using the available IP address. I would like to make the printer discoverable on windows machines, i.e: the client:
      1. opens control panel
      2. goes to "add a printer"
      3. selects "network printer"
      4. the printer on the archlinux printer server (via CUPS) displays to be setup on the client
I've done a bit of research and I've found that Samba holds a solution but I know nothing about Samba and according to the Archwiki the default smb.conf file holds the proper configuration for printer sharing (although I'm still unsure if this method is required. Also to note the default smb.conf file does not solve my issue).

This looks promising thanks! Do you know how avahi need to be configured to make it work with CUPS? Also, is Samba required for the printer to broadcast with avahi?
I've also found cups-browsed however it doesn't seem to work. Below is my /etc/cups/cups-browsed.conf if it will help any.

You can try the following. I'm not on a network with a server running CUPS so I'm not sure these steps are verbatim, but hopefully this puts you in the right direction:
    1. Go to your CUPS web interface. It should be on port 631. If this is not open or accessible, modify your CUPS config so that it is: http://hplipopensource.com/node/231
    2. Go to Printers
    3. Go to the page for the printer you want to remote-print to, and grab the URL of that printer's page.
    4. On your Windows machine, when it begins to scan for printers, choose "My printer was not displayed in this list."
    5. Choose the option to input a URL, and paste the URL of your printer.
    6. Select your driver. Run Windows update if needed.
    7. You should now be able to print to that printer over the network.
This is what my current fix is (and it works quite well), thanks for the suggestion though! The server is hosted in a public-ish place and there are various end users who aren't computer savy. The issue is one of convenience as most end users don't know how to follow directions correctly and "IT support" (which is just myself) is very limited.
I'm not concerned about security currently (I'll worry about that later).
    Thanks for the responses!

  • Trying to add a printer shared by a Windows machine

Just got my first Mac - a Macbook - this week. I'm having some problems getting everything started.
One is my printer. I have an HP desktop with an HP PSC 1310 All-in-one attached and shared on my wireless network. My Macbook is easily able to connect to the network, but I can't seem to find a way to use the printer through the network.
I have tried using the Add Printer utility. I can find the correct workgroup, and I see the computer name, but when I "choose" that computer, I see a new dialog box asking me with which name and password do I want to connect to the printer. I don't need a password to log on to the computer or printer, and I can't find the actual printer anywhere. Can someone help me?

i dunno if this would be the solution, but maybe you could search online for a driver for your printer that is compatible to run on your new mac and install it, restart and then try adding it to your printer list? when i got my new mac this past year i had to update some drivers for the new intel chip and this is what i did to get them to show up correctly...hope that helps

  • Can't find printer shared on Windows machine

I don't know how to connect my MacBook Pro to a printer shared by a Windows machine on my network. I have the Windows path to the printer but I don't know how to get Leopard to see the printer. (I tried the Windows tab in the Print and Fax control panel.) Can someone please tell me what is going on?

Okay, some things you need to confirm for me.
What is the workgroup name of the computer sharing the printer?
What is the ip address and subnet mask of the computer sharing the printer?
What is your Mac's ip address and subnet mask?
If your Mac and the PC have the same subnet (usually the first three numbers of the ip address) and the workgroup name is the same, then you should be able to see the share. If not, there is a manual method of connecting to a Windows share.
What you need to do is customise the add printer browser. After selecting to add a printer, control-click next to the More Printers icon to see a menu. Choose Customize Toolbar. Move the Advanced icon to the toolbar. Now click the Advanced icon to see a new menu. Change the top menu to Windows Printing. In the field after smb://, you can enter the computer name or ip address of the sharing computer, followed by a / then the printer share name. For example,
    smb://192.168.40.12/Canon
    Note that sometimes you have to also use account information in the queue name, especially when the guest account is disabled. In these cases, the queue name would be entered as follows;
    smb://username:password@computer_name/printer_sharename
Once you enter the queue name you can then select the printer model. For some models of printers, you cannot use the driver supplied by the vendor. So you have to look at using CUPS based drivers such as those provided by Gutenprint.

  • Can't install my printer on Windows virtual machine using  Leopard OS

Have just installed Leopard and Parrallels software. I cannot install my HP C3180 printer on the virtual windows machine. • How do I export HDR photos made on Photoshop CS5 onto a flashdrive so I can use them on a window machine for commercial purposes.  Adobe support claims it is a apple problem not theirs.  PS the other window machine doesn't have Photoshop cs 5 installed?

Hi, How do I export HDR photos made on a macpro with photoshop cs5 onto a flashdrive so they can be imported correctly into a windows machine that doesn't have photoshop installed on it?  Already exported to a HP flashdrive but they do not even show up on a windows machine. Need that capabillity since this is for commercial printing.  My wife's mac laptop only shows 3/4 of the picture the rest is grayed out.  Adobe support claims it is a Apple problem.  Love the finger pointing and hold me blameless atitude on their part.  Told them creating a picture should be like gas that can be used in anybody's car, just not their Adobe equipped ferrari.  Do I need to convert the file struture so it can be read by the window machine? How would I do that ?  Any comments appreciated. Doug

I certainly wouldn't expect to read native PS CS5 files with all features intact and supported on a machine that doesn't have CS5 installed. Try saving the files as flattened (no layers) TIFFs before moving them to the flash drive and trying to open them on the Windoze box.

  • Adding to available "Printer Models" for shared Windows printers

I have a MacBook (my first Mac) and I have been able to get it to network with my Windows XP desktop, and it can print to the Canon Pixma iP4000 printer connected to the Windows machine.
However, in Printer Setup, I had to choose a Printer Model, and the closest I could find is "Canon S800 - Gimp Print v.5.0.0 beta 2" -- which allows me to print, but the printouts are all in draft mode.
I would like more control over the printer settings. Is there a way to add to that list of available Printer Models (i.e., is there some way to download an update for that list)??

    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Thanks, Greg, for the iFelix link. I had found that already, and run through the steps many times last night, and it still did't work on my MacBook.
However, I did find another set of instructions on another web site that helped me get it working. Basically, I set it up as an LPD/LPR printer instead of a Windows Printer, addressing it via the IP address of my WinXP machine. I still have to use the manual sheet feeder (the driver can't deal properly with the paper tray on the bottom of the printer), but at least I was able to print.
Oddly, I just tried again using the iFelix instructions, and now it works! Why it didn't work last night, I don't know. But now I've got two means of accessing this printer.

  • Print from Mac to Windows printer

Hi, I've got a Time Capsule that's hooked up to my Mac Pro. I have 2 windows computers upstairs that are wireless. I recently hooked up an Epson Stylus CX7400 printer to my computer upstairs which is running Windows Vista. I can print perfectly from the Windows Vista computer but I have no clue how to print from my Mac. I also want to print from my other windows computer which is running Windows XP. Any help is greatly appreciated.

For this to work at all you must turn on printer sharing on the Windows machine to which the printer is physically connected. Since this is a Windows issue you will need to find Windows help with it. Perhaps you could post a query in the Windows forum here or at the MS forums.
Once the printer is shared you should be able to locate the printer in the Print & Fax preferences to Add it for OS X. You will need a proper OS X compatible driver for the printer.
You can locate additional help by selecting Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and searching with appropriate keywords.
    Also see:

Not all printers and/or their drivers will work wirelessly.

  • Mac can not connect to OfficeJet 6700 while windows machine can ...

    Hello all.
I have an HP Officejet 6700 for more than a year. It is connected to a wireless network (Netgesr wireless router), both Mac an Windows PC printing and scanning successfully until yesterday…
Since yesterday the Mac cannot print or scan, while windows machine still works fine …
    Mac OS version is 10.9.4
I changes the printer from DHCP to static IP, I deleted the printer from the Mac and installed it again from the HP site but at the HP Utility I get stuck in the Add Officejet 6700 (08B0D2) Bonjour Multifunction with an “Unable to communicate with the printer at this time” error message.
Again all of this while windows machines communicate and work perfectly fine.
    Any idea?

    Hi @AmitFish,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I see you are not able to connect your HP Officejet 6700 Premium to your Mac, everything was working fine and all of a sudden you get a communication error.
I would first like you to make sure you have installed all Mac updates, please run the updates and let me know if this helped?
If not, please complete the steps listed here: Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection, I know you have previously set a Static IP, please continue and let me know the outcome.
I will watch for your reply.

    Hi guys,

If reinstalling the current update doesn't work, perhaps that is because the update was completed properly, but in the process has messed up configuration settings files and preferences. If you can't find any problems in your settings through System Preferences, then there are probably hidden errors in the .plist files and the way to correct that is by manually wiping out all your network settings files and redoing everything in Network preferences may be a quicker fix than brain surgery. Try deleting these files, then reboot and redo your network settings appropriately..
These are all in the folder /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration:
    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    com.apple.nat.plist
    NetworkInterfaces.plist
    preferences.plist
Note, this will wipe out all network-related settings, and force the OS to rebuild default preference settings files for the built-in network devices. This is sometimes the only thing that will clear up bizarre networking issues, but generally speaking, it works well.. just don't forget to thoroughly note all your proper network settings including wireless network passwords and all that before you perform this house cleaning for reference as a precaution.

To print to a Canon inkjet when it is being shared by a Windows computer, you need to use a CUPS-based driver such as Gutenprint or PrintFab. Note that the Canon drivers cannot be used - even the versions that have CUPS in their name.
Gutenprint is the preferred driver as it is free however the MP240 is too new and is currently not listed as a supported model. So you could look at using a different Canon model, such as the MP220 or some users have found the MP150 to work for their non-supported model.
If you cannot get any of the alternate Canon models to work correctly then you could try [PrintFab|http://www.printfab.net>. There is a 30 day trial available so you can check that it works before paying the €49. Also your MP240 is listed as a supported model.

  • Can't install Solution Center on Windows 7 64 bit to PSC 5140 printer shared from XP computer.

I recenntly got a laptop with Windows 7 64 bit installed.  I have a HP Photosmart C5140 All-in-One printer installed on a Windows XP desktop as a shared printer.  I am able to print to the printer from my Windows 7 laptop without a problem.  I want to install the HP Solution Center app so I can scan, etc from my laptop.  When I try to install the Solution Center on the laptop, it starts the install process fine but then gets to the dialog where it wants to know how the printer is connected.  The only options it provides is direct connected (USB) or network connected.  I choose the network connected option.  It asks for the IP address of the printer which isn't available since it is installed on the XP machine using USB.  I have tried using the standard MIcrosoft fully qualified network name (can't remember the technical term right now) for the XP computer where the printer is installed (i.e. \\computer_name\printer_name) but it still won't allow me to continue with the Solution Center install.  Possibly this type of install is not possible?  I thought I did something similar a year or so ago with a Vista laptop I had.

More than likely, you are receiving the access denied error because there may not be a HomeGroup in place.
To handle networks securely with Windows 7, Microsoft took a different approach.  A HomeGroup essentially creates a trust among all the devices in that home group.  If a device is not in that homegroup, then that system will essentially be denied access.
Click on Install a printer on a home network to get basic steps to install a printer in a network environment.
Click on HomeGroup: recommended links to get more information about Home Groups, including setting one up.
