Can't Put G4 in TARGET MODE

I sure hope someone can help me. I have a 5-year-old G5. It was the biggest system at the time. I just got a gigantic Mac Pro and I'm trying to EASILY use the Migration Assistant to transfer my data. I started by trying to restart the G4 and holding the T key. The G4 shuts down. I tried resetting the PRAM 3 times and then selecting the Startup Disk in System Preferences and restarting using that as the Target Mode. The G4 shut down. I've switched the firewire cables to different connections...no luck. I've tried to restart the G4 with Option-Apple O + F and typing in target-mode and no luck. The G4 simply WILL NOT go into Target Mode. Has this happened to anyone else? If so, what was the problem and how did you get it to work? Help please!!!

Hi...thanks for the link and info but the computer is set up exactly as it came from Apple computer. Where do I look to find out how it was configured and then, if it's not like you mentioned, what do I do? Will I need to bring it in to an Apple repair place to reconfigure it? It states, below, that all later Macintosh computers come with an ATA hard drive at ATA Bus 0 in their default configurations. What do they mean by "later?" This is a G4, 5 years old.
FireWire Target Disk Mode: Target Computer Shuts Down at Startup
FireWire target disk mode requires the target computer to have an ATA hard drive at ATA bus 0.
Symptom
When you try to start up the target computer, it makes its startup sound, but then shuts down. No video appears on the screen, nor does the FireWire icon. The computer starts up normally without the T key held down.
Products affected
* Macintosh computer with built-in FireWire port
Solution
Make sure the target computer has an ATA hard drive on ATA bus 0. It is normal for a target computer to shut down if it does not detect an ATA hard drive on ATA bus 0.
All later Macintosh computers come with an ATA hard drive at ATA Bus 0 in their default configurations. However, it is possible to custom order (CTO) a Macintosh that does not.

My 12" powerbook logics card crashed. I have a 17". How do I retrieve my internet bookmarks from the 12" by putting it into Target mode on the 12" and looking into the hard drive on the 12"? Where on the 12" hard drive do I go to search for them?

If the 12's logic board is trashed, I don't think you can get into FireWire Target Disk Mode. The computer has to start to get to FWTDM. Will it starte and run at all?
If it won;t start, you will have to go inside and extract the hard drive. Then get this gadget:
Newer Technology Universal Drive Adapter USB 3.0/2.0 - connects any 2.5", 3.5" or 5.25" drive
It allows you to connect a bare drive to another computer that has USB. It will act just like an external disk drive. Assuming the 12's drive is not damaged due to the LB failure, you can retrieve files quickly.

  • Macbook Pro will not boot up - can't access HD in target mode

I am fairly new to Mac's, so I greatly appreciate the help in advance....
    Quick synopsis of problem:
Was using my new Macbook Pro, purchased 6 mos. ago... only had Safari open, Closed lid, went to dinner...when i came back, opened the lid... would not wake up, pressed power button and it went into Disk Utility mode.
What I have tried so far...
I have read several posts and appears I will need to reinstall Mac OSx... I am trying to connect my Macbook Pro to my Macbook Air to access the hard drive and copy/save important files before trying to restore/reinstall OS X....
unfortunately, I do not have a backup... so I need to access the hard drive to save some files.
I have put the Macbook Pro into Target Mode, but the Air will not recognize the drive... I have them connected with a Thunderbolt cable....
I have tried several different methods to connect them... ie... starting both up with cable connected.... both not connected... starting up the Air, then connecting the Pro... then Target mode, etc....
I also booted up the Pro with the Macbook Air in Target mode and it loaded the OSx from the Air, but i still cannot access the Macbook Pro Hard drive....
I feel I'm close, but just can't get it to recognize the Pro's hard drive....
Can you please assist and tell me what i need to do in order to get the Macbook Pro's hard drive to connect so I can access my files?
    Thank you..

Let me also add that I just tried to boot the Macbook Pro's OS on the Macbook Air by starting the Air and holding down the 'Option' key.
It showed 2 available bootable volumes:
    Macbook Air's HD
it showed the Pro's hard drive labeled: "Recovery - 10.9"
i don't have a good feeling about this..... the Air is obviously communicating with the Pro, but it seems that Pro's Hard Drive might be done...
any thoughts, ideas, solutions...???  thanks again

  • Can't copy files in Target Mode

I'm trying to move applications from my Titanium PowerBook G4 (OS X 10.4.7) to my MacBook by booting the G4 in Target Disk Mode. I can get the icon representing the G4's HDD to appear on the MacBook's desktop, but sometimes when I double-click to open it, I get the beach ball and no window opens for the HDD. Most of the time the window opens, but then I get the beach ball when I try to open the Applications folder. So back on the G4 I tried moving the application's (Photoshop Elements) folder icon out of the Applications folder and into the HDD window. Now in Target Mode, when I drag the Photoshop folder icon out of the G4's window and onto the MacBook desktop, the copying process seems to initiate normally, but then stops. It always stops at the same number of MB copied, and then I get the interminable beach ball.
What's happening and how do I fix it?
    --howard

Hard to say. Boot the PB with its Tiger install disk and run Disk Utility, repairing the disk and its permissions. Boot the PB with its Apple Hardware Test disk and run the extended tests. If the PB passes all of those, then repeat the same steps with the MB. Once both pass the tests, retry the TDM hookup, and copying stuff.

  • Problems with multiple e-mail accounts on Droid 2 & also can't put phone into Silent mode

I just received my Droid 2 and having a problems with having multiple e-mail accounts.
My original droid worked fine with all of this.
I have 2 different personal e-mail accounts setup.
When I click e-mail, it just defaults to the default e-mail address and I have no way of switching accounts. I have to change the default e-mail account in order to view the other account.
Along with having a shortcut on the home page to each e-mail account, it always just goes to the default one and no way of adding a shortcut to both.
When I did this on the original droid, i could choose which e-mail account I wanted a shortcut for and could obviously have both on the home screen.
I also have found no way to NAME the accounts, ex. Comcast & Work.
That way I could distinguish the difference between the 2 on my home screen even if I could get a shortcut to both.
not sure how this could be overlooked but I sure dont think there is a way to make this happen.
Also, what is with 2.2 System and not allowing you to put it in silent mode?
I updated my original Droid to 2.2 and could no longer make it silent with the volume button on side or going into the sound settings and changing it to silent, it would always stay on vibrate.
And now it does the same thing with Droid 2. I cant make it silent at all.
    Any ideas on either issue

ok I got the silent problem fixed.
The update changed vibrate to be always, even when on Silent mode.
The e-mail problem however is stll an issue and I realy hope they release an update to fix this.
I'm sure I'm not the only one with 2 e-mail accounts on their droid.
I never had an original Droid, so I can;t compare to what was on that.  For me, I am using the "Messaging" app - it seems to be set up for multiple e-mail accounts better than the email app.  Messaging is the one recommended by the manufacturer - give that a try.

  • HT4623 I can't wake up my iphone. I can't put it on DFU mode. I can't do anything!!

It is an Iphone 4 on ios 5.1.1 unlocked. After loosing service twice a received a message (on Thursday 20): connect to Itunes for activation. My Iphone name and serial number was reconized. Few minutes later this data was no more available on screen, phone has only a backlight with no Itunes logo and few minutes more Iphone was completely dead. Just on ios 6 launch date!! I can't believe this is an accident!!

This may be caused by a corrupt existing backup that needs to be deleted, or by data on your phone that is preventing the backup.  To troubleshoot these, try deleting your last backup (if you have one) by turning off iCloud Backup in Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup, then tap Manage Storage, swipe across your backup and tap Delete, then go back and turn iCloud Backup back on again.
If it still won't back up, you may have an app that is preventing the backup from succeeding.  To locate which one, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, tap the name of your device under Backups, under Backup Options tap Show All Apps, then turn them all to Off (including camera roll) and try backing up again.  If it succeeds, then the camera roll and/or one of your apps is preventing the backup and you'll have to located by process of elimination. Turn the camera roll On and try backing up again.  If it succeeds, turn some of your apps to On and try backing up again.  If it succeeds again, turn some more apps to On then try again; repeat this process until it fails.  Eventually you'll be able to locate the problem app and exclude it from your backup.
It some cases it may also be caused by network connectivity issues with the iCloud server.  Solutions to that include power-cycling your wireless router (unplugging it for 15 seconds, then plugging it back in), resetting network settings on your phone (in Settings>General>Reset), updating the firmware on your router, and changing the router's DNS settings to use Google's public DNS (see https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using).

  • Can I install to G4 iBook via Target mode from a MacBook Pro?

Can I install to G4 iBook via Target mode from a MacBook Pro? I have a non functioning iBook DVD Drive but want to do a clean install. Can I use the FW/Target mode to install? If not what can I do to install w/o the OD not working?

was this a std size disc or a funky shape / small cd of some type?
you will have to pull the machine apart, pull the slot drive, & take all the brackets / slot cover off the front of it (where you put the disc in). you can they try pushing down on the mechanical works (holding the drive as it sits in the ibook & face into the slot where you would put the disc in).
otherwise, you will have to take the drive itself apart, usually taking all the screws off around the outside & pulling the metal cover off will get you in to where you can force or pull the disc out.

  • Security issue: Firewire Target Mode

    Hi everyone,
I am concerned about the firewire target mode. As handy as it can be, what about security? I have some very confidential files on my computer and I wonder if there is a way to make sure that nobody can access my files via target mode.
Is there a way to disable target mode? Or to set a password for the target mode?
And I have a back-up on an external firewire drive. Is it possible to password-protect an external drive?
    Thanks for your help!

FireWire Target Disk Mode falls under the category of "physical access," and there's an old computer saying that no matter what security you use, once an attacker has direct physical access to the hardware, all bets are off, because of the possibility of simply removing the hard drive and putting it in another case to gain access. Therefore, you should concentrate on avoiding theft or unauthorized access to your laptop, like never leaving it visible in an unattended car. You could also turn on FileVault.
I don't use FileVault because I don't want to tie up my CPU unnecessarily encrypting all the huge video, audio, and photo files within my Home folder. However, I do keep all my most sensitive documents (financial, etc) inside an encrypted disk image on my PowerBook hard drive. Anything with an account number or other confidential data is stored in there, and it's only mounted when I really need it.
For the backup, count me as yet another person who keeps backups on encrypted disk images on the external hard drive. It's an extra step to mount it before the backup and dismount it afterwards, but not that much of an obstacle really, and it's pretty safe.

  • Can I install to a target disk?

I was going to help a friend with her machine, a tower G5 but lo and behold, I haven't got an extra monitor and my machine is an iMacG5.
Can I make hers a target drive and then install the MAC OSX update somehow on her machine?
I don't know if I can get the combined update (she has 10.2 installed and I want to go to 10.4.10) as an image so I can update her machine via target mode.
    Anyone know about this?

You could in theory run an update on her machine in Target Disk Mode from yours. However, updaters only works within a release version as denoted by the number after to "10." I.e., her computer is 10.2 (Jaguar) and you are proposing on running the 10.4 (Tiger) updater (it is for 10.4.11 I believe) and the updater won't work. A Tiger updater will only update an earlier version of Tiger, etc.

  • Mute button doesn't work to put phone in standby mode, help??

I have a blackberry curve and the mute button will not work to put my phone in standby.  It does work to mute a phone call, however.  It has done this a couple of times, where it will work for awhile, and then stop working for awhile.  I'm not sure if I have hit something to make it so I can't put it in standby mode.  Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Welcome to the forums
Did you press and hold the mute button? It takes a long key press to work. Also do a Battery Pull:
    1. Remove the battery while phone is turned on
    2. Wait a few seconds before inserting it again
    3. Allow the long boot up process to finish (takes a few minutes usually)
This clears most software issues that occur on blackberries from time to time. You could also use Quickpull, a free app that simulates a battery pull without physically removing the battery: http://store.berryreview.com/product.asp?id=27660&n=QuickPull-Free
A battery pull reclaims memory lost during application usage and clears minor software errors that creep in over time. The blackberry runs an OS just like your PC runs windows and the battery pull is the equivalent of a reboot/restart on your computer.

  • How did Target mode fix my video problem?

On my 2006 MacBook Pro 15 the video had gone wrong with coloured diagonal lines appearing on startup making the computer unusable. However after putting it into Target mode to get some files and try to install a USB to HMDi adaptor driver, the computer came back up with a normal screen. This worked for several hours before it went bad again, however a few minutes in Target mode and all way well again after rebooking, very strange.
Any thoughts why this could fix what seemed like a logic board replacement, as the graphics were intergrated.

Since Target mode works straight out of the firmware without depending on HDD content, it is probably resetting the video infrastructure, which later gets corrupted by software. At least I think the GPU/VRAM/etc. thing seems ok. Few ideas:
Try starting up in Safe Mode (press down Shift before the chime). Takes a LONG while, but clears many caches that may be corrupted.
Purge any and all caches for good. Use OnyX or similar utility.
Disable the integrated Intel GPU by unchecking Automatic graphics switching in System Preferences/Energy Saver and see if that helps. You'll be running exclusively on the Radeon GPU, which is a battery gobbler, beware.
