Can't quit Safari
Several times now, when I choose to end a session in Safari, neither 'CMD+Q' or 'Safari>Quit' Safari work. In fact, the 'Quit Safari' option is greyed out and choosing 'Quit' from the dock yields no response.
Logging out doesn't work, nor does shutting down, as Safari cancels logout. All that works is a 'Force Quit' but of course, that doesn't solve the problem.
I have seen from other forums, both on this site and elsewhere, that this is a common and well-known problem, and has been for some time, so I assume Apple is aware of it. If they are, I must say I'm dismayed by the lack of support.
Sorry if I'm coming off as cranky here, but it's rather frustrating and I'm this close to abandoning my beloved Safari for another browser.
Does anyone have a real solution to this problem? Or know of a way I can find one?
Thank you in advance.
90% of the time only one account is affected. Create a test account or use the Guest account.
If you can establish that it is only one account you could remove all Safari files from that account as follows:
First export bookmarks then quit Safari.
Open Terminal - in Utilities and paste all the commands below - make sure it is the same as here - particularly first and last characters - then hit return - it will save your Safari folder with a date stamp on your Desktop and delete several files. Start safari, reset preferences and import bookmarks.
mv ~/Library/Safari ~/Desktop/Safari-`date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S`; \
rm -Rf ~/Library/Caches/Apple\ -\ Safari\ -\ Safari\ Extensions\ Gallery; \
rm -Rf ~/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari; \
rm -Rf ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari; \
rm -Rf ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.WebKit.PluginProcess; \
rm -Rf ~/Library/Cookies; \
rm -Rf ~/Library/Preferences/Apple\ -\ Safari\ -\ Safari\ Extensions\ Gallery; \
rm -Rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.LSSharedFileList.plist; \
rm -Rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.RSS.plist; \
rm -Rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist; \
rm -Rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.WebFoundation.plist; \
rm -Rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.WebKit.PluginHost.plist; \

Help, I can not quit safari or shut down my computer since updating to Lion.
Can some one help?
Since updating to Lion, I can not quit Safari or shut down my computer.Several ways to force quit when you can't quit an app normally.
Go to your Apple menu (top left in your screen) then from the drop down menu select Force Quit.
You can also force quit an app using the Activity Monitor app located in /Applications/Utilities.
You should be able to shut down your Mac by holiding down the power button until the screen goes black. Then restart as usual. -
Opened Safari and it has an open window that says "Congratulations you are the winner for April 11th. Please select your prize and enter your email" I did not follow the link but I can't quit safari. Can't shut down either Safari stops my request. How do I get Safari to be normal again?

I can't quit Safari and my screen has occasional jitters. What's wrong?
My MacBook Pro has developed several symptoms which I am going to guess stem from Mother Board problems.
1 My screen over the last couple of days has spontaneously jittered (not flashed) then the computer crashed. I could move the cursor but nothing else. I had to force a restart.
2 I tried to shut down but now I can't quit Safari.
3 I have 10 dark plumes coming out of the bottom of my screen evenly spaced.
Mother board failure or something else? What would be the best course of action? I am going to force quit again and see if I can get rid of the plumes.Thank you Andrew. That solved my dark plumes problem. I finally got hold of my son who is very good at computer problems and he suggested that I shut down, remove my battery and disconnect the power supply. Leave it like that for 20 mins or more. Apparently the condensers sometimes get overcharged and cause strange little problems and that can fix them.
I have tried that and so far it is working like it did when it was new. I will work with it for a few days and report back.
It does seem like the dark plumes was a separate issue which you solved.
Thank again -
I can't quit safari while the hotmail window is open
What is the problem between Safari 5.1.7 and hotmail? I can't quit safari while the hotmail window is open. I can close Safari from all other websites.
Hi ...
You may have better luck accessing your Hotmail account using Mac Mail instead of web based (browser) using Safari.
Launch the Mail app.
From the Mail menu bar top of your screen click Mail > Preferences then select the Accounts tab then the Account Information tab.
Click +
Type in the name, email address, and password then click Continue.
No more not being able to quit Safari using your Hotmail account.
If you'd rather not access your Hotmail account via Mac Mail, when you can't quit Safari, try force quitting.
Several ways to do this.
Comand + Option + E on your keyboard.
Or click the Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click Force Quit.
Or by using Activity Monitor located /Applications/Utilities -
I have visited a web site which wouldn't let me quit without responding ok to a question even tho I tried to avoid it. Now I can't quit safari or turn my computer off. Please help. Feel like I've been bugged!
Force Quit it. Right click on the Safari icon on the Dock and while holding down Option, click on Force Quit.
Either that or Click the Apple icon and click on shutdown while holding down Option key.
Or launch Activity Monitor from your Utilities and find Safari and end the process. -

Can't quit Safari 5.1.2
Software update gave me Safari 5.1.2. I'm running OS 10.6.8. Safari runs fine but I can't close tabs without right-clicking. How do I fix these problems. I want to be able to quit safari & close tabs more easily.
Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari
Move the Cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash.
Restart your Mac. Try Safari.
~ (Tilde) character represents the Home folder. -
Quit menu is disabled, can't quit Safari
I just emptied cache and cleared history, and for some reason Quit Safari is disabled. Can you help?
In Lion and Mountain Lion (which sounds like a soft drink, by the way), applications start up in the same state they were in when you quit them. If you force quit an application that is chasing its tail, it will just resume chasing its tail when you start it up.
Try adding the shift key to whatever method you use to start the application, and it will start up fresh. That means shift+command+O, shift+double click, Shift+clik on the dock, shift+click on Launchpad. Whatever.
If you don't want an application to open all its windows when it starts the next time, quit the application with Option+Command+Q.
