Can't re-boot iPod

I have a 30GB iPod, 2nd or 3rd gen, It froze while playing a song. I can't get it to re-boot. I can get it as far as 'disk mode' but then it reverts to the icon w/ the sad face. Any ideas? Thanks. j

Hi Chuck
Installing the latest update from the link that you provided was the first thing I tried, but unfortunately for some reason it wouldn't install on my Mac. The Easy Install option told me that the update couldn't be installed as there was nothing selected; Custom Install wouldn't allow me to check either of the boxes (they were both greyed-out and unchecked) and, thus, it couldn't be installed that way either. This was why I had the idea of going back to my original installer CD and taking it from there.
Thanks for your suggestion anyway – I'll keep trying.

• Help!!! Itunes and Pc can't detect my Ipod Touch 4g

I tried everything that Apple Support told me to do and still can't detect my ipod touch 4g. Still stuck at apple boot logo, tried DFU mode and Recovery, still can't be detected by PC or Itunes. What to do? I need Help Badly.
When i connect my ipod, no sounds pops out but it opens and charge still stuck at boot logo.
I'm running Windows7 ultimate.
Some told me to connect it to a Mac Book, is it possible that it can be detected on a mac book? Because i only tried connectin it to other Windows PC with XP, Vista and still haven't got anything. I don't thinl it's a hardware problem cause my ipod just run low on battery and i restarted it and then It got stuck. xD

- Yes, another computer may help.
- Next try disconnecting from computer/charger and let the battery fully drain.  Then charge and try again.
- Last, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.  If defective, they will give you a replacement under your warranty.

• Can't see my iPod on PC

I can't update my iPod, iTunes or My Computer can't reach drive - any suggestions?

Unfortunately, there is no one ‘Silver Bullet’ answer for this issue. Many things can contribute to the problem.
Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.
Try closing and re-starting iTunes. There have been cases where iTunes refuses to see an iPod, but after re-starting, it works again.
Also try re-booting the entire computer. Especially if the PC has been operating for a long time &/or many programs have been opened and closed, repeatedly.
Other USB connected peripherals may be the cause as well. Try removing all connected USB items and attaching the iPod. If you have a USB keyboard, it may be worth a try using the adapter to convert it to non-USB. If the iPod connects, continue plugging things back in until you have the problem return. You may have then isolated the issue. Sometimes it could be a printer, camera, Flash Card reader, or other attached device causing a conflict.
If your iPod shows up in Explorer under 'my computer' try changing the drive letter: Click on Start=>Control Panel=>Admin Tools=>Computer Management=>Disk Management. Right-Click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”. Choose something further along in the alphabet that is unused. Usually, “M”, “N”, “O” (or something similar).
If that doesn't work, Put Your iPod into Disk Mode then plug it in and you should be able to Restore the iPod
Also try these hints (and the other suggestions above) from any other USB port you may have on the PC. Sometimes switching USB ports can make all the difference.
Also See:
Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod
iPod does not appear in iTunes or on the desktop

• Can anybody help my iPod?

Ok, here is the deal. I got my Click Wheel iPod for 2004 Christmas... So I've had it all of 05, and now halfway through 06, so 1 year and a half.
The problems... the picture of a folder with an exclamation mark comes up...and below it, it has "www.apple.com/support/ipod" written

Nothing has worked. I started by restarting my Computer and iPod. Ive reinstalled iTune, and upgraded iPod Software. Ive done everything. Ive restored the iPod software onto the iPod plenty of times.
After restoring my iPod, and plugging it into external power source, it goes through its boot up process, then the picture comes back.

Ive restored the iPod, and it never works, it always goes back to the picture of a folder. Is my iPod done for?
Thanks in advance for help!

Sigh...using "Can anybody help my iPod?" as a subject line is not very helpful. We don't need the life history of your iPod. If we're here, we're frustrated and having to dig through vague posts is unnerving...ALL the posts will be about needing help with iPods. Yes, it would have been nice if you had told how you resolved the issue...grrr

how can i find my ipod if i dont have any outer apple products

You don't need other Apple products. If you didn't set up "Find My iPhone" on it, you have no chance of tracking and finding it then.

Apple will most likely exchange it. The one you receive will be refurbished.

• Ubuntu, Windows, and iTunes can't see my iPod. What can I do?

I have an iPod 5g and i have been messing around with it and i discovered the problem of iTunesLock preventing me from accessing the iPod and putting itself back on. Well in a stroke of genius I deleted the Play Counts and iTunesLock files also trying to see if that would stop iTunesLock from reappearing every time i plug in my iPod.
Now my computer (running Ubuntu 7.10) does not see it at all. Also windows does not see it, until i remove it then it says my iPod is corrupted, but when i connect it, iTunes denies any knowledge of seeing it.
I tried to use this website to help and it did nothing for me.
http://www.macworld.com/article/38851/2004/09/trubipod.html
Right now when i turn it on it shows the "Connect to computer. Use iTunes to restore iPod."
then it goes into disk mode. Strangely, even in disk mode neither windows nor Linux can see it.
I went into the diagnostics menu and everything seems to check out fine.
i know there is a .Trash-matthew file on the iPod and i have a great suspicion that if i can get on the iPod and see the hidden files then i could just put the file back.
Also BIOS does see it so I don't think its completely bricked yet.
I am using linux but I have access to Windows Vista. So I can work in either format.
for those versed in Linux here are some commands and their outputs for you to use:

• How can I sync my iPod Touch to a new computer?

My Laptop's hard drive died: that's bad enough, but my data was backed up onto my iPod Touch, including some very rare tunes that I can't ever get again. I then installed iTunes onto my wife's desktop, but now I'm told that if I want to sync the iPod, I have to delete everything that's on it as the iPod is already synced to another computer - which now doesn't exist.
I thought that backing up my rare music to my iPod made it safe; it was on my hard drive and my iPod. Now I'm told that if I want to sync my iPod to another computer I have to delete its contents. I can't afford to lose the music, because I can't replace it. Surely this can't be right?
Incidentally, because I can't sync my iPod I have missed at least 2 appointments because my calendar isn't updated.
I understand that Apple are worried about data being copied from one computer to another, but surely there must be a way to register a new computer as one to which I should sync?.

This program can rescue your rare music for only US$25:  http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.php
